This quest begins with Captain Bvellos in Kael Drakkel (roams from the arena to the bank to the palace area).

You say, 'Hail, Captain Bvellos'

Captain Bvellos says 'Greetings, _____. I am the captain of the Kael militia. I will be watching those of your kind who have come to Kael Drakkel as mercenaries and bounty hunters. You may have come here to serve king Tormax but Kael is my home and I intend to keep it a safe place for the Kromzek. Keep yourself out of trouble or you will end up in a world of pain.'

You say, 'I will keep Kael safe.'

Captain Bvellos says 'With the influx of [mercenaries] into Kael Drakkel, I have seen minor crimes increase. I have had to increase my militia patrols. A majority of my militia work longer hours than they did before. There was a time when we only had to watch for the dragons from the sky and the Coldain from the outside. Now we must watch within.'

You say, 'What about mercenaries?'

Captain Bvellos says 'I have several bounties open if you are interested. Bring me the head of a Coldain and I will reward you with a small sum of money and spread the word of your good work. There is also a bounty upon the nefarious Icepaw kobolds who serve the outcast Velketor. I require four of the paws of those little beasts.'

In exchange for a Coldain Head, you receive a few platinum pieces and a substantial faction increase with King Tormax. (Note: An easy way to test your faction standing with King Tormax is to exit the bank and turn hard left. Before you get to the Icy Bridge, stop and con Dlammaz Stormslayer who is across the bridge and to the left.)

Captain Bvellos says, 'Excellent, ______. Here is the bounty as promised.'
Your faction standing with Kromzek has been adjusted by 40
Your faction standing with Kromrif has been adjusted by 10
Your faction standing with King Tormax has been adjusted by 10
Your faction standing with Claws of Veeshan has been adjusted by -20
You gain experience!!

In exchange for 4x Kobold Paw, you get a Silvery Mask, an Antlered Mask, or a Giant Scalemail Tunic:

Captain Bvellos says 'You have done well to hunt down these foul dogs.'
Captain Bvellos reaches into a large bag and pulls something shiny from within its depths 'Take this as a reward.'
Your faction standing with Kromzek has been adjusted by 40
Your faction standing with Kromrif has been adjusted by 10
Your faction standing with King Tormax has been adjusted by 10
Your faction standing with Claws of Veeshan has been adjusted by -20
You gain experience!!

Upon turning in a coldain head, this dialogue occurs:

Captain Bvellos says, 'Excellent, ______. Here is the bounty as promised.'

I charmed Bvellos with my enchanter and he conned indifferent to my warrior. I turned in 4 coldain heads and I got the quest rewards, but no faction changes at all. I then tried turning in paws and it also resulted in no faction changes.

Am I doing something wrong? I just find it weird that I get the quest output and quest items, but no faction.

Also, this is on Agnarr TLP server.

Giving Bvellos coldain heads and kobold paws results in the same faction gains/losses, but they're quite significant in that it wouldn't take that much farming to get out of bottom KOS.

Kromzek +40
Kromriff +10
King Tormax +10
Claws of Veeshan -20

Also there are two items of "evidence" Bvellos is looking for, to nail Wenglawks.

Turning in the letter from the Chetari Courier (he gives you his Dire Wolf-Hide Cloak):

Kromzek +50
Kromrif +12
King Tormax +12
Claws of Veeshan -25

And giving him the Shardwing Courier's letter:

Kromzek +10
Kromriff +2
King Tormax +2
Claws of Veeshan -5

Best to stick with kobold claws, because they stack and coldain heads mostly require killing coldain. Then after getting non-KOS to giants, head over to Crystallos and slaughter everything to regain Claws of Veeshan faction. That way, coldain, giants, and dragons all like you. For now. :D

Edit (after all this time): had factions on letters backwards

Anyone have some information on the courier portions of this post? Looks like some quest entries we don't have.

This quest also rewards a Giant Scalemail Tunic. I've had the tunic as a reward twice out of five attempts.

i made an Ogre Shadowknight RallosZek worshipper

for levels 30-32, I killed coldain wolfamasters and the coldain wolves on the west side of the Great Divide. I collected 34 Coldain heads and moved to gunthak for faster exp and trained Hide skill.

I opened a trade window with Belvos and did Hide (sometimes he could still see me so i retried) and he took the head and gave me faction.

I left the great divide still dubious to Coldain AND the giants, but the 34 heads brought me to /con Kindly with Krom factions.

save the heads! dont turn them into that recruiter - just do what i did. you dont need to be level 50.

Bvellos also gives you 5 up to 8 plat for each coldain head. the exp was very minimal

Turning in 4 of the Icepaw Kobold Paws, will get you the Silvery Mask, but also the Giant Scalemail Tunic, which is a piece of junk, Rumor ( ? ) , that you might also get an Antlered Helm. My last turn in I got 2 Silvery masks aand 2 Giant tunics.

I have turned in 17 bags worth of heads (~135 total) and Tormax still scowls at me. According to my guild's records, I also have 3 Yelinak kills since I took a faction hit from a major Kael named.

I understand why SoE wants to make it hard to switch factions, but this is borderline ridiculous, IMO. Smiley: mad

Faction Increases
# Aug 28 2003 at 3:14 PM Rating: Decent
I am trying to get my Zek faction up so I can do the ToV Armor turn ins. A Bard friend and I (both 65th) went to Kael... I took almost 40 heads with me. We first charmed the recruiter and found that indeed he would accept the heads and give reward but no faction.

The Bard then played her Invis song and I would open a trade window, wait for next beat, and turn in. I did get the faction ups.

We then went to the trainer and again, charm did not work. The first invis attempt with him lulled worked and I got the faction up, but later invis attempts failed... he suddenly seemed to be able to See Invis. Bvellos was not up so we went back to the Recruiter and I turned in 29 more heads, and I am STILL Scowl.

1.) How the heck can I get above KOS Zek...don't really care about other factions.

2.) Is there any difference between turning in one head or 4 at a time?

3.) Does anyone have a current definitive answer on whether Trainer or Bvellos see invis?

4.) is there any better, more effective way to get this faction repaired?

BTW before theses turn ins I was KOS to Coldain, Max KOS to Dain, Scowl KOS to Kromzek and BARELY dubious on CoV. :-(

Does the invis trick with the bard still work? I was told that you no longer get a faction hit using this.
RE: Faction Increases
# Nov 17 2003 at 12:38 PM Rating: Decent
Just FYI...yes this technique still works. It works on any NPC in game... as long as they can be lulled/pacified, if they don't see invis, and if the turn in can be done with indiff faction. Captain Bvellos meets all those requirements :).
RE: Faction Increases
# Aug 31 2003 at 3:25 AM Rating: Decent
1) Turn in more heads.
2) no difference, it counts all 4 heads.
3) Bvellos does not see invis, I do not know about Trainer
4) No
Also if you have Sneak, you can use that to sneak up behind bvellos then turn in heads. And for other starting off on which faction to go with, maybe doing kael or CoV faction isnt exactly the best to go with, I say this because Kael and CoV are so freaken easy to get up, but Coldain takes forever to get up, though I would like to hear someone disagree with me on that....

# Aug 26 2003 at 11:40 AM Rating: Decent
if you didnt know you can sell the paws for 23pp each so using 4 to get either a 30pp item or trying for the 100pp item just isnt worth it. If you can get 4 you can get 20 then look at the cash you will have.

5 dain hits gave me max ally to kt. but still scowling to zek/rif. ive killed many ww named dragons, named dragons in wtov as well as regular mobs and turned in 20 heads. im about to turn in 30 more heads to bvellos. hopefully that will take me out of scowling at the least. i need dubious to be able to turn in my head to kt without zek faction mobs wasting me.
Changes had been made
# Mar 12 2003 at 3:33 PM Rating: Decent
After many long frustrating hours quadding wolf masters heads approximatly 120 heads todate, 3 dain kills, 2 yelinak kills. I started to inquire about why i was still KOS to King Tomax Faction. And Low and behold i foundout the have made changes to factions between KT, Dain, & Yeli. To cut down on the faction hopping. Was this really necessary the items you quest for here are no drop not marketable $$$ items
RE: Changes had been made
# Apr 25 2003 at 2:28 PM Rating: Decent
They have definitely nerfed the faction hits somewhere. I have 3 Yelinak hits, about 6 Velketor hits, and have turned in 205 Coldain Heads and I am only dubious to KT.

In fact I just got my 3rd Yelinak hit last night, I was dubious to KT before the hit and dubious to KT after the hit.

Faction checking without running backward and forward
# Jan 24 2003 at 8:58 AM Rating: Excellent
You can use the 'target memory' feature of EQ to check your faction with Tormax faction without a lot of running about. Here's how:

1. Go near the bridge leading into the King Tormax area.
2. Ahead of you and to the left is a 'window' into a room, in which can be seen Dlammaz Stormslayer. Click him.
3. Press 'c' to consider him then press the TAB key.
4. Go to Captain Bvellos and do your hand-in.
5. When you get the faction message, press F1 then TAB. Your target will now again be Dlammaz Stormslayer. Press 'c' to consider him, then press TAB again.

6. Go back to step 4 till you have run out of hand-in items, or you achieve the desired faction level.

All the F1 and TABbing is a bit fiddly, but a lot quicker than going backwards and forwards between Bvellos and Dlammaz.

EDIT: As of a couple of months ago, there's a 'toggle between last 2 targets' function built into EQ, but very oddly this isn't assigned a hotkey by default -- just assign it to something like the asterisk on the Keyboard and you will find life SO much easier. :D

Can turn in KOS!!
# Dec 15 2002 at 3:55 AM Rating: Decent
You can certainly turn in heads while KOS to kromzek. And very quickly will be ally. skip the formalities of faction hunting!

(NOTE* Technically this should be possible with other classes, but myself being a bard can only verify that it works with bards. I am lvl 65 and using the level 62 lull)

That said here is what i did. Go to the bank area and lull any nearby mobs. (Dont use Bard epic it actually makes your lull worse, a backfire of the % increase epic gives). Lull bvellos as well.

Wait for bvellos to wander back to bank and walk up to him playing invis song. Click a head on him to open the trade window (keep max range is best, so if invis drops he wont aggro because of lull) Now after trade windows is open let your invis song pulse at least one more time before clicking trade. Repeat and Rinse. You are now ally. Congratulations.
Faction Levels (Detailed)
# Nov 21 2002 at 12:58 AM Rating: Excellent
For some depraved reason, I decided (upon getting my hands on the Dain's head) to raise my max-kos to all kael factions up to the necessary high-amiable entirely via this quest. It's a hassle, but it can be done.

Generic Faction Levels
-2000 to -751 ...scowls at you, ready to attack
-750 to -501 ...glares at you threateningly
-500 to -101 ...glowers at you dubiously
-100 to -1 ...looks your way apprehensively
0 to 99 ...regards you indifferently
100 to 499 ...judges you amiably
500 to 749 ...kindly considers you
750 to 1099 ...looks upon you warmly
1100 to ~2000 ...Ally faction

Faction hits for this quest
+10 Kromriff
+10 KingTormax
+50 Kromzek
-20 ClawsOfVeeshan

The CoV hit may in fact be -25... I'm uncertain. With enough persistance, it seems that one could attain ally in both Kael and Skyshrine by doing this quest and the giant helms quest.

It took between 80 and 100 heads to become Max-Ally (from Max-KoS) to Kromzek.

It has taken approximately 130 heads to become dubious to both Tormax and Kromriff (with Collaboration, which is +300 faction).

It is entirely possible to do the turnin while KoS, though if you /con Scowls at the time, you will receive nothing from the quest. If Bvellos (or any NPC) is in combat mode, he will not accept trades. If he is charmed, you will receive the coin reward, but no faction.
Faction!!!!
# Nov 19 2002 at 8:35 AM Rating: Decent
Lately I've been doing faction hunting so I can get my plate guants which I currently have sitting in the bank, but I've been having a few problems.

I've been killing Coldains for the longest time, my faction cant get any worse, and to get some faction I've been doing the sneak-behind-recruiter thing and turned in like 100 heads. My Kromrif can't get any better, but after all that faction gaining I'm still kos with zek, I'm on the verge of going insane lol..

I'm wondering how everyone got their faction atleast to dubious so they could turn in to Bvellos, after all my faction gains I find it hard to believe I'm still kos =/

A friend mentioned going invis up to Bvellos, put heads in trade, then hit trade and run like mad buuuuut thats kinda risky.

I read below (Shmoozo) that you need to be indifferent to Bvellos to do this quest. I did not find that to be true. Bvellos accepted the heads at dubious on 9/26, E'ci.

After only about 20 heads, I was ally to Kromzek although I was still only dubious to King Tormax (I had been Scowl to KT before handing heads to Bvellos).

FYI, it took about 80 heads to go from near max scowl to high amiable to King Tormax.

Note: You need a HIGH amiable faction to do Tormax quests. I completed the Belt with amiable con, yet a friend that also con'd amiable could not complete it without turning in more heads.

Good luck!

On the contrary all giants I have come across can be charmed. There is a level limit on most charm spells so it may be this that has prevented you or someone you know from charming certain giants or else you just thinking about mez and getting confused~

I also have charmed giants with my 52 chanter, in/near the arena. The level cap is 53 for most NPCs and 51 for planar NPCs. Allakhazam's calls this guy a level 53, which means he can still be charmed. I have found that giants rarely resist my charms, as well. The only reason why you don't see all that many people charming these giants, unless they're level 60, is because the giants, when charm breaks, can only be held off the chanter that charmed them by a lucky root, in which case, they summon him/her anyway.

For some reason, they don't like it when you bend their pathetic minds to your will, then force them to slaughter their brother giants. Haven't figured out why this is so yet, after all, they follow Rallos Zek, don't they? Shouldn't they appreciate the fight for the challenge to their abilities that it is, then laugh when their brothers spawn 15-20 min later because they were too weak?
