This is the third Prayer Shawl Quest. You must do the first two before doing this. Ask Borannin "What chore?" and he will start you on the third quest.

Loremaster Borannin says 'Ahh, some fine specimens indeed, ______. I will have the best of these mounted at once, wish me luck in the contest! Here is the Cloth Prayer Shawl of our people. Before I forget, the council has issued yet another [chore] for you to complete.

You say, 'What chore?'

Loremaster Borannin says 'The council agrees that you have demonstrated a disdain for our enemy, the Kromrif, that rivals our own. They now ask that you demonstrate your loyalty to the Dain by humbling yourself and serving our people. Give this, my seal, to Mordin. He will instruct you further.

  • Mordin Frostcleaver is located in Mordin's Meats at LOC -214, -214.

    You say, 'hail Mordin Frostcleaver'

Mordin Frostcleaver says 'Ah, hello there, and welcome to me shop, Halfling. Ye'll have to excuse the mess but I've been havin a bloody good time here lately. . . HAR HAR, ye get it? Anyways, thanks to you offlanders I now have a selection of some exotic meats never afore seen here on Velious. In addition to supplyin' the freshest meat in Thurgadin I also offer tasks to would-be hunters in the wastes.

  • Give him Borannin's Seal.

Mordin Frostcleaver says 'Hullo ______, I see you've signed on for a bit of food service eh? Well we can always use an extra pair a hands here dat's fer sure. First things first, warsh yer grubby mitts an cook up dinner fer good ol Leif. Shouldn be too tough fer ye, he has simple enough taste. Make him a Tundrabear sandwich an lemme know when he's been fed. Dontcha ferget ta give him this with his meal.

  • He gives you a napkin named "Leif's Napkin" is No Drop.

You say, 'What is a Tundrabear Sandwich?'

Mordin Frostcleaver says 'Dat's easy, ye just take a slab a dat Tundra Kodiak meat and a jug a sauce, put it in da oven, den combine the product with a loaf a bread in a mixin bowl an there ye be.

  • Get a Tundra Kodiak meat, put it in oven with jug of sauces to make Saucy Bearmeat. Put your creation in a mixing bowl with one loaf of bread, which Mordin sells, and combine. If your skill is high enough you get the sandwich. Turn this in to Guard Leif (location -284, +492, on the way to Grand Historian) with the napkin and get a "Used Napkin" back.

Guard Leif says 'Well I'll be derned. An outlander that can make a good Bearmeat 'n Bread! Thank ye, _______.'

You receive Brita's Napkin from Lorekeeper Brita. Hold onto this, you will turn it in on the next step.

You say, 'What is Ulthork Meat Pie?'

Mordin Frostcleaver says 'Hmm, lemme look that one up. Been awhile since I made one. Here we are, two Ulthork meats, a vinegar and a spices in a mixin bowl. Put yer meat mix, a clump a dough, an a pie tin in da oven an yer good ta go.

This requires two ulthork meat, and the problem here is that if you're not careful you will eat the meat. Most of the items you need to collect or make are edible. I know the kodiak meat and bunny meat do not get eaten, but everything else seems to disappear if not below your food in your inventory. I could not find any snake eggs in Thurgadin for the clump of dough, so I ported to Misty Thicket to get them. The pie tin is another stumbling block here unless you are good at smithing and pottery, or you have a friend who is. To smith the Pie Tin you first need to make a ceramic lining, so your pottery has to be trained somewhat. I had relatively good success with a 25 pottery, whereas my smithing is in the low 100's and I don't think the pie tin is trivial to me yet. Luckily the pie tin, and the pot in the previous step, are regular items that anyone can craft and give to you if you lack the proper skills.

  • Turn the pie and the napkin in to Lorekeeper Brita in the back of the Library and receive a dirty pie tin which you take back to Mordin for the final step in this quest.

Mordin Frostcleaver says 'More dirty dishes, eh? Well outlander, only one more meal to serve and I'll be done with ye. Make a snow griffin souffle fer the Grand Historian himself. It's his favorite.'

Your faction standing with Coldain has been adjusted by 3.
Your faction standing with Dain Frostreaver IV has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Kromzek has been adjusted by -1.
Your faction standing with Kromrif has been adjusted by -1.
    You gain party experience!!

  • The final task is to create a Snow Griffin Souffle. The person you are making this for is none other than the Grand Historian Thoridain himself.

You say, 'What is Snow Griffin Souffle?'

Mordin Frostcleaver says 'This one's a bit tricky, ya toss four snow griffin eggs and a pack of spices in de oven. Ye must bake it just right or it's all gunna be wasted. When yer done bring it to Thoridain and if ye did it right he'll give ye his special seal. Just show Borannin that seal and yer shawl and he'll know that yer finished in the kitchen.

  • So now you need 4 Griffin eggs. I set out and with a little help was able to get 4 eggs to drop in about 3 hours. It would have gone faster, but I had trouble finding the Griffins. All in all I'd say we got the 4 eggs in about 12 - 15 Griffins, maybe even less.

  • Once you've made the souffle turn it in to Grand Historian Thoridain with the napkin. Here I learned something useful. I forgot to turn in the napkin when I turned in the souffle. In my excitement in creating the souffle I had completely forgotten. I was about to petition that he had eaten my item when I realized the forgotten napkin, so I gave him the napkin and to my suprise it worked.

Grand Historian Thoridain says 'My compliments, _________, what a wonderful dish! Please accept my personal Seal as a token of my appreciation. May it give you power over your adversaries.'

Your faction standing with Coldain has been adjusted by 5.
Your faction standing with Dain Frostreaver IV has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Kromzek has been adjusted by -1.
Your faction standing with Kromrif has been adjusted by -2.

  • He gives you his Seal to give to Borannin with your second Prayer Shawl. Turn them into Loremaster Borannin.

Loremaster Borannin says 'Well done ______, the council will be impressed with your effort. Here is the woven prayer shawl, wear it with pride. I know there is talk of great plans for you, be sure to come back and ask me what the council has [brewing].

  • You receive Seal of Thoridain.

Your faction standing with Coldain has been adjusted by 10.
Your faction standing with Dain Frostreaver IV has been adjusted by 2.
Your faction standing with Kromzek has been adjusted by -1.
Your faction standing with Kromrif has been adjusted by -5.

    You say, 'What is brewing?'

Loremaster Borannin says 'As of now they have nothing for me to tell you. Bear with me _______, there will soon be much to do!

For those who want it sumed up, here is a shopping list of items you will need to do the whole quest. This assumes no failures, so plan accordingly :)

    1 Tundra Kodiak Meat (Non-stackable)
    2 Jug of Sauces (Stackable)
    1 Loaf of Bread (Stackable)
    1 Mixing Bowl (Container)
4 Snow Griffin Eggs (Stackable, No Drop)
    3 Spices (Stackable)
    2 Frost Bunny Meat (Non-stackable)
    2 Flasks of Water (Stackable)
    1 Pot (Non-stackable, Not a container)
    2 Ulthork Meat (Stackable, edible)
    1 Vinegar (Stackable)
    1 Snake Egg (Stackable)
    1 Bottle of Milk (Stackable)
    1 Cup Flower (Stackable)
    1 Pie Tin (Non-stackable, Not a container)

One last note...I did this whole third quest without an open inventory slot, since I had to carry around a mixing bowl. So you don't have to worry about not getting an item from one of the NPC's if all of your slots are filled, anything they give you, including the shawl and the seal, fit in your backpacks.

Can Tanik be found while invis?
    # Mar 15 2001 at 10:45 AM Rating: Default
I tried to find this guy, on the ramp to Kael. I was running around tring to make him spawn and I got a message "You have been ambushed by Frost Giants". 4 gaints spawned on my head, they were blue to 51. So, back to the question, does anyone know if Tanik will spawn if I stay invised to avoid the ambush?

giants see through invis and can be triggered whether you're invis or not. it's just like flipping a coin. sometimes the giants spawn, sometimes tanik.

ok this is a complete spoiler for the 4th step of the shawl quest in thurgadin. leave now if you want to quest and figure it out yourself.

ok. here we go. first a complete step by step.

first, talk to loremaster borannin in the thurgadin library. say "what brewing?" (continued from the 3rd shawl).

    You say, "What is brewing?"

Loremaster Borannin says, "Ahh yes good to see you again Clairan. I wish it were under better circumstances that we meet today. For some time now we have sent teams of our finest rogues to gather intelligence for the Dain. Tanik Greskil on one of our best. He was recently sent into the heart of Kael Drakkel on a very important mission and had not returned. He is now long overdue, and fearing the worst, our wise council has asked me to dispatch a rescue party to determine what has become of him and return him to safety. I have decided to give you this opportunity to build upon the trust you have earned from the council. Will you accept this mission?"

You say "I will accept this mission."

Loremaster Borannin says "The council will be pleased to hear of your acceptance, Clairan. Scour the region surrounding the city of the Giants. Discover what happened to Tanik and, if possible, return him to Thurgadin. If you are successful, remember to hand me your woven shawl. We seem to be running low on them, but I must say Mordin has never had so much help in the kitchen. Anyway, I will eagerly await word of your findings. Good luck, and may Brell protect you."

now head to eastern wastes and the kael ramp. Tanik is a triggered spawn. the way to trigger him is to run up and down the kael ramp. (worked best for me when i ran zig zag). he spawns down towards the bottom of the ramp and is laying on the ground.

    You say, "hail Tanik Greskil"
Tanik Greskil says "Outlander! Thank Brell you've found me! I am the last surviving member of my unit. Our mission was somehow compromised, the bloody Kromrif knew just where to find us... I can't imagine how they knew. I was barely able to escape with my life and wandered into a trap here. I am badly hurt and need your help."

    You say, "i will help"
Tanik Greskil says "Quickly, give me a vial of Veluim Vapors so I can return home, I am in desperate need of some attention from our clerics."

    You say, "what velium vapors"
Tanik Greskil says "Drat! Are you telling me you don't have one with you? Run back to Thurgadin at once and speak with Frundle, she can make you one. I will do what I can to stay alive. I may need to move about a bit to keep from being discovered. Hurry now outlander, you're my only hope."

so now you have to run back to thurgadin. Frundle can be found in one of the three buildings across from the paladin guild (near the library).

    You say, "what velium vapors?"
Frundle Frenkler says "Ahh, you come seeking my family recipe? After all you've done for our people it's the least I can do. First you must fashion a velium vial, then combine the vial with two small pieces of velium in this jar. That's all there is to it. Please keep the recipe a secret."

    You say, "what velium vial?"
Frundle Frenkler says "I'm no potter mind you, but if I remember correctly it's a small brick of velium, three crystalline silks, and two glass shards. Then you'll have to finish up by firing it in a kiln with a high quality firing sheet."

she will give you a 4 slot purifier. it is a container, so you will need an open inventory slot.

now you need to collect your ingedients. go to CC. everything you need is there. hunt the miners up top for the small pieces and small bricks of velium. then drop (make sure you have lev!) down to the bottom, run through the dorf town, and into the hall with the velium crawlers, spiderlings, and webmasters. the spiderlings die in one nuke (688). the crawlers die in one nuke and one ES dot (688+300=around 1k HP). webmasters are tougher and i avoided them. in about an hour, i had a stack of these and gated out.

head back to thurgadin. go in the bank. the vendor on the very left sells crystal shards and HQ firing sheets. buy 2 crystal shards and 1 HQ firing sheet.

go click on the pottery wheel in the bank. put the items in like this:

    crystalline silk
    crystalline silk
    crystalline silk
    glass shard
    glass shard
    small brick of velium

do not stack the silks. also, even though all other pottery i've done always requires a water flask, do not use one. i tried and it didn't combine. so NO WATER FLASK! i'm around 100 in pottery and it was not trivial.

you will get an unfired velious vial.

right next to the pottery wheel is the kiln. combine the vial you just made with a high quality firing sheet. this will produce a velious vial. it was trivial at 100.

now, open that purifier box that you got and put in the vial, and 2 small pieces of velium. make sure they are not stacked.

    small piece of velium
    small piece of velium
    velious vial

hit combine and you will have a vial of velium vapors. this looks like it can be used by characters as well. it has one charge of "thurgadin gate" and apparently will gate you to thurgadin, although i didnt try.

now run back to eastern wastes and find tanik again. give him the vial of velium vapors and he will thank you and then poof, leaving you a note to deliver to loremaster borannin. go back to thurgadin and turn your woven shawl along with the note to loremaster borannin and you will get faction and your shawl will be updated.

    <img src=http://clairan.50megs.com/shawl.jpg>

    :) good luck

P.S. WORDS OF WARNING! when trying to make tanik pop, there is a chance that instead of tanik, you will trigger the kromriff death squad. this is a group of very nasty giants that have high MR (even after my group debuffed him, i couldn't land a snare). they also run at nearly sow speed. if anyone has ever fought warden bruke in EW, it's like having a handful of him all spawning on you at once, except they have more HP and see through invis. our group (ranging from mid 40s to 50s) had trouble killing one. we finally succeeded and got a nice large class only woven vest (18 ac, 10 str and some other attributes). my friend had between 8-10 spawn on her at once. she got a message of "you have been giant ambushed" and they killed her in seconds. i took a screenshot of the dead one we killed if you need proof...but i don't lie. so be careful

also, the quest once again stop at this point. figures. now we wait another 2 months for them to add the 5th part. wow, by Christmas this shawl will be worth wearing!

wonder if ya could side step finding Tanink the first time(not take the chance of the death squad twice) just go straight to Thurg talk to Frundle get the vapor vial, then go find Tanik give him the vapor, be done with it..The death squad is freeakking CRAZY!..i was kiting a Man-0-war by the ramp there and "YOU HAVE BEEN AMBUSHED"..now I know the story on why i was attacked, must have did somthing correctly in making Tanik spawn, but actually got unlucky and got raped instead, basically wonder if Tanik can be over looked if ya got to hail him then go thurg then back to him, telling ya the GIANTS are REALLY NASTY!
    RE: Complete spoiler!
    # Mar 25 2001 at 3:43 AM Rating: Default
yes, you can just make the vial a bring them to tanik, thus only having to trigger him once. :) but if you do the quest step by step, yuo have to talk to him the first time because he tells you to make the vial and go talk to the lady in thurgadin. :)

    WARNING!
    # Mar 15 2001 at 3:08 AM Rating: Default
be very careful. the dorf is a triggered spawn from running around the kael area in EW. this is all fine and dandy except for the fact that occassionally, instead of the dorf popping, you get kromriff death squad spawns instead. Imagine having a bunch of warden brukes all spawning on your head at the same time. they have more HP too. we killed one today, and it was tough. unsnarable. nearly as fast as my sow. group of us finally took him down, but not without casualties. and that was only one. i've heard of up to 10 spawning at once. instant death. see through invis. they drop a woven vest that's something along the lines of 18 AC 10 str and some other attributes. large classes only. so be careful and maybe use a level 1 mule to search.

    I solved the 4th QUEST!
    # Mar 14 2001 at 11:22 PM Rating: Default
Ok here is the skinny on the 4th quest for the Coldain Prayer Shawl series.

I was wandering near Kael Drakkel searching for this guy after hearing that the quest had been implemented on live servers and low and behold I get this message:
"the snow crumbles away revealing an injured coldain" or something like that.

I saw and exclaimed with great relish.. oh my thats the npc that im looking for!!! I was wandering near this location:
    NEG 6644 POS 4337

I hailed him and he requested that I aid him, I of course replied in the affirmative and he replied to me that he required a Vial of Velium Vapors.

When I asked what a vial of velium vapors were.. he was dissapointed that I didnt have any and that I should go see Frundle in Thurgadin to make some.

Frundle is a coldain lady in a small building near the library. When she is hailed and asked "What about the velium vapors?" she hands you a 4 slot container "Velium Purifier."

She then tells you that you require 3 things to make the vapors when combined in the purifier:
    1) Velium Vial
    2) Small piece of velium STACKABLE
    3) Small piece of velium STACKABLE

Not knowing how to make the velium vial I asked her what indeed this was... she replied that to make a velium vial I had to:
    1) Combine 3 crystalline silks, small brick of velium NON STACKABLE, 2 glass shards on the pottery wheel
    2) Combine result with high quality firing sheet in the kiln

I got all the materials required from spiders(silk) and orc miners (small bricks NON STACKABLE/small pieces of velium STACKABLE) in the crystal caverns in about 4 minuts.. lucky I guess.

Well the velium vial required Im guessing a good pottery skill.. I wouldnt know because I have 135 skill in pottery and it was trivial.

I created the vial and combined it in the purifier with the 2 small pieces of velium and I received:
    VIAL OF VELIUM VAPORS
MAGIC ITEM LORE ITEM NO DROP
    EXPENDABLE CHARGES:1
    Effect: Thurgadin Gate
    All/all

Now... this is QUITE handy if players can indeed drink it... I imagine it will greatly bolster the demand and population for previoulsy unsought after items in crystal caverns. I no longer will have to auction for ports for an hour to get back to a bank from sebilis anymore if I have one of these in inventory

Anyway.. I went back to around the same location and we found him again. After I gave him the vial he vanished and gave me a letter to give to Borannin.

I gave the letter and the woven shawl from step 3 to Borannin and received a:

    FUR LINED COLDAIN PRAYER SHAWL
    4 ac
    4 int 4 wis 4 sv cold

I also got the message that I should ask later:
"How can I further advance my reputation?"
Im assuming this initiates step 5 which is FRUSTRATINGLY NOT IN GAME. *Sigh* thx verant.

Well this concludes my humble and informal post.. good luck on finding this guy.. that's the hard part.

I also stumbled on Tanik Greskil. He was in the Eastern Waste zone a little bit east of the Entry to Kael Drakkel at the Loc neg 6803, pos 2923 when I found him. The info I have confirms the recipes and other info I was working on this morning when I decided to come and share the info here.

    :)

Here's my commented log file so far. My comments are ofset by tildes like ~this~

    =========================

~I was running through eastern wastes east of the deep canyon that leads into Kael Drakkel when I received the following message in my chat window. Note that it appears to be only the last line of a message in that it isn't a complete sentence and it was also indented in an abnormal manner.~

over a pile of snow exposing a Coldain!

~Not far from me I saw a Coldain named Tanik Greskil laying on his side in the snow.~

    You say, 'hail Tanik Greskil'

Tanik Greskil says 'Outlander! Thank Brell you've found me! I am the last surviving member of my unit. Our mission was somehow compromised, the bloody Kromrif knew just where to find us... I can't imagine how they knew. I was barely able to escape with my life and wandered into a trap here. I am badly hurt and need your help.

    You say, 'I will help'

Tanik Greskil says 'Quickly, give me a vial of Veluim Vapors so I can return home, I am in desperate need of some attention from our clerics

    You say, 'what velium vapors?'

Tanik Greskil says 'Drat! Are you telling me you don't have one with you? Run back to Thurgadin at once and speak with Frundle, she can make you one. I will do what I can to stay alive. I may need to move about a bit to keep from being discovered. Hurry now outlander, you're my only hope

~Frundle is a shopkeeper selling potions and such near the cleric's guild in Thurgadin and directly across from the paladin's guild there.~

    You say, 'hail Frundle Frenkler'

~Frundle never responded to any of my hails, so I simply asked the following question.~

    You say, 'what velium vapors?'

Frundle Frenkler says 'Ahh, you come seeking my family recipe? After all you've done for our people it's the least I can do. First you must fashion a velium vial, then combine the vial with two small pieces of velium in this jar. That's all there is to it. Please keep the recipe a secret

    You say, 'What velium Vial?'

Frundle Frenkler says 'I'm no potter mind you, but if I remember correctly it's a small brick of velium, three crystalline silks, and two glass shards. Then you'll have to finish up by firing it in a kiln with a high quality firing sheet

~It's nice to know that the "velium vapors" might actually have a use for players as well. The down side is that it requires items that are also used in other tradeskills. Nevertheless I can certainly imagine people making these to sell them to players who might want them as an escape means as well as for those who simply want to avoid having to wait for a port to get to Velious.~

    # Mar 15 2001 at 6:35 AM Rating: Default
okay ... wait ... I neglected to notice that the item is no drop.

    (sigh)

So I guess selling them is out and to get one you will have to make it yourself.

This is an EXTREMELY usefull post thank you very much Aurick. One question though, which zone is Tanik Greskil in? Is he in wakening lands, INSIDE kael drakkel, or in the eastern wastes? I will look for him in the mean time in those three zones at that loc. thanks again and good journeys to you.

    4th step now on test!
    # Mar 10 2001 at 6:56 PM Rating: Default
i found this on the druids grove message board. apparently, the 4th step has been implemented on test. it's about time. now someone needs to go check it out for i don't have a character on the test server. :(

    You say, "What is brewing?"

Loremaster Borannin says, "Ahh yesm good to see you again Aluinae. I wish it were under better circumstances that we meet today. For some time now we have sent teams of our finest rogues to gather intelligence for the Dain. Tanik Greskil on one of our best. He was recently sent into the heart of Kael Drakkel on a veryy important mission and had not returned. He is now long overdue, and fearing the worst, our wise council has asked me to dispatch a rescure party to determine what has become of him and return him to safety. I have decided to give you this opportunity to build upon the trust you have earned from the council. Will you accept this mission?"

You say "I will accept this mission."

Loremaster Borannin says "The council will be pleased to hear of your acceptance, Aluinae.

The Skinny on the Baking portion of the quest
    # Mar 09 2001 at 3:26 PM Rating: Default
BUY A SPIT so you can combine on the road - it's a 6 slot container and needs an inventory spot.

Start with Making Batwing Cruchies to level 46
    Easy Buy Batwings and Frosting
Next Make Fish Fillets to level 82
Easy Buy Fish and Jugs of Sauce
Next and final Make Fish Rolls
    Easy Buy Fish and Batwings
Then sell all that extra crap back to the vendor after you hit the trivial level and will not need those items anymore. Sell back extra frostings at level 46, sell back jugs of sauce at level 82 (save a few for the quest) and then sell everything back at 135. Sell all Crunchies, fillets and Rolls back as you make them unless you want them for food.

Batwings, Frosting and Jugs of sauce all sold in East Commons.
Fish sold in Freeport in the port authority on the docks.

I got from level 1 yes level 1 to Level 135 in about 2 hours (it helps being a druid with SoW and a Very HIGH WISDOM)

Go to East Commons and buy about 500 batwings if you have room then go to the frosting dealer (also in EC) and buy enough frosting to get to level 46. Make the Batwing crunchies at the frosting vendor. then buy 200 (to be safe) jugs of sauce and run to freeport for fish. Buy enough fish to get to level 82. Make Fish fillets while sitting at that vendor. Buy more fish and hopefully you still have enough batwings left that you can get to 135 while still in freeport making Fish rolls. Make the Fish Rolls while sitting at the same vendor. This should cost you about 20pp or so in Total, and you'll be a Master baker with Skill at 135.

Hint: buy a mixing bowl while you are in Freeport or you'll have to go back to get it.

If I had been able to get 4 griff eggs faster and a pie tin and pot, I would have completed the entire 3rd quest in under 5 hours to include getting baking skill to 135!!!!

Griff eggs, the pie tin, and pot will be the only hold ups. All the other meats and supplies are Very easy to get and purchasable. Druids have it the easier because we can track, port, and run fast.

    # Mar 07 2001 at 1:09 AM Rating: Decent
Just finished the third part of the quest. Was looking through some of the posts below and someone had mentioned that the griffs were nerfed. Couple other people had complaints but most said the eggs were relatively easy to get. Took me eight hours of straight camping and tracking at low traffic hours to get my eggies...2 hours per egg...I think that's pretty bad hehe. Thought maybe they nerfed it today in the patch but I suppose it could be random.
Was also wondering if anyone's heard anything about the fourth part of the quest other than the brewing that Borannin tells you about. Thought maybe they would add it in todays patch but I guess not (
They arnt nerfed - Also some good tactics for dru crew

From my experiance doing this quest i dont think there nerfed at all, the problem is you were doing it durring unpeak times on EQ. in order to get the griffs too spawn, u need to kill the junk laying around i.e. bunnies kods cougars ect...The best place i have found to get em too spawn is just south west of the bridge. I did the track and run and kill think like u did and it didnt work all that well. as soon as myself and a buncha other ppl in the zone started killing the crap laying around they spawned like mad, actualy too many i couldnt keep up.

Now if your a druid, bust out the old terise animal spell from lvl 19 and pull them too the bridge. When feared and snared at the bridge they generaly dont stray too far, as a matter of fact i almost felt sorry for em cause there was no chalange in killing em at lvl 34 with 183 wis. now if you high enuff or have a good grp goin the elders also drop the eggs, some ppl posted that they didnt but me and my wife took one down for giggles and it had an egg. So if your a druid druling over this quest fear not about waiting too do it at lvl 40+ i did it at lvl 34 and for the most part solo.

    Just did this quest.
I raised my baking skill making Fish Rolls (1 bat wing & 1 fresh fish, in Oven) wich is trivial at 135. Got my skill to 125 to do quest. Everything, including the Griff Souffle, was trivial at 125. You can buy bat wings in EC and fresh fish in Neriak or Freeport. I went through about 4 full backpacks of ingredients. This is a cheep wat to get the skill needed.

Trivial at 125? Odd that, I raised mine to 138 on pies and such and still failed on the souffle the first time. (wisdom at 200) Of course, it was trivial but I didn't think it was very trivial, more like 135ish.

I did the wings and fish thing as well though for most of it. You can also buy the fish in Rivervale by the docks.

Did this quest tonight. The heads seemed to drop at the same rate as the toes, so..be prepared for a long wait if you are soloing these things. The eggs are even worse, a mage friend online and myself must have run across Eastern Wastes a dozen times, but found very few griffins. HOWEVER, most all the ones we found were around the orc fort at -4250, 250. So I'm guessing if you hang around there you will get the eggs in no time. Took me about 4 hours to get 4 eggs, one of which a nice mage camping the coldain outpost let me loot. So it pays to shout for these things if you need em.

    # Feb 05 2001 at 12:53 AM Rating: Excellent
Here's the pottery recipes needed, and I believe all are trivial to me at 113 pottery skill.

    Mixing Bowl:
    - 2 Large Blocks of Clay
    - Large Bowl Sketch (maybe you need to buy the one near the bottom of the vendor's selling list)
    - 1 Flask of water
    - Firing Sheet

Combine clay, sketch, and flask in pottery wheel, then combine unfired mixing bowl and sheet in oven.

    Pot:
    - 1 Large block of clay
    - 1 Metal Bits
    - 1 pot sketch
    - 1 flask of water
    - 1 HQ firing sheet

Combine bits, clay, sketch, and flask in pottery wheel, then combine unfired pot and sheet in oven

    Pie Tin:
    - 2 blocks of clay
    - 1 pie tin sketch
    - 1 flask of water
    - 1 HQ firing sheet

Combine clay, sketch, and water in pottery wheel, then combine unfired pie tin and sheet in oven

Hope this info helps you all who chose to avoid smithing like me ;)

I finally made the Souffle and gave it to the Grandmaster. I got the "huzzah" message and the seal, but no instructions to turn them into Borannin. Trusting this guide to lead me on the right path, I *tried* to give the Shawl and Seal to Borannin, but only got the error message "This item cannot be dropped, sold, or traded."

So I didn't get the Shawl upgrade, although I did the get Seal.

    Modrin permakilled
    # Jan 26 2001 at 9:30 PM Rating: Default
apparently someone on Ayonae Ro found a way to exploit this quest, and because of that the GM's permakilled Modrin - this is completely lame, in my opinion, and Verant should know better than to punish everyone for something one person does wrong
Umm.. no one "found" a way to exploit, its by design
    # Jan 29 2001 at 4:43 AM Rating: Default
    ***
    1,075 posts

The quest was made to be exploited by design. They should fire the person who did that but of course in software they just call it a bug and move on.

    here is the problem:

All you have to do is say "what chore?"
You get the seal and are told to give it to modrin.

You then notice that you get factions raised, including the dain and (important part here) EXPERIENCE. So then you go back and say the same thing again, get the same factions and xp again.

Its not rocket science to figure out what is wrong with that and no one really has to "figure out a way to exploit" this quest. You can see a mile away how its exploitible.

Obviously faction and xp have to be removed for the "what chore" part since its just the start of the quest.

    I also take issue with:

"everyone for something one person does wrong"

since the only person doing somethhing wrong was the person who designed the quest. If you put something in the game where players can easily raise factions which they want to raise, without having to zone, they are going to do it. WE ARE CUSTOMERS not GAME DESIGN BALANCERS.

Its up to verant to put in the quest, test it, make sure its balanced. It is not up to me to notice that I can raise faction a lot then not do it. For all I know they designed it purposely so I could.

Oh, and the REAL reason it was removed? Though I could not tell on my 54 druid the xp musta been good. I had my 31 cleric there and figured "what the hey I'm gonna see how long before shes indiff so she can train."

So my 31 cleric did the quest enough to be able to train from the cleric trainer. When I was done i noticed something I was not counting on though, she had gained a bar of experience. Now, think of someone bringing a level 1 to thuragin. Thats why the guy was taken out until they patch and change that part of the quest. I was not even trying to get xp on a 31 but did.

    wrong
    # Jan 29 2001 at 9:20 AM Rating: Good
this was an exploit, because what the person did was pull the loremaster to Modrin... there wasn't even an attempt to walk back and forth between the two npc's... yes, it was stupid for Verant to design it this way, but this is the very definition of exploit... i.e. using something in game to gain something in a way that was not intended and clearly not meant to be used as such... sorry if you don't like being called an exploiter along with whoever originally did this, but that is exactly what you are
    RE: wrong
    # Feb 25 2001 at 9:42 PM Rating: Default
there is nothing wrong with exploting a bug while it is there... its a pity they react be removing it so no one else can do it. but as a wizard who is WAY UNBALANCED and seeing no efforts to improve my (ungroupable unwantable Wizzie) i say if they ***** up take advantage of it while you can... after all they would never hesitate to nurf your character at a moments notice and say sorry tough luck... turn about is fair play

I petitioned, and was told that he was on "vacation". So, I guess they will have to find a different way to continue with the shawl quests. I didn't get my seal in time. <sighs> But there is a bigger problem here. Isn't he the only one who sells food and cooking goods in the zone? They should have AT LEAST added in a new npc to offset this or something.

Well I suspect they will fix this. You'd think they'd learn after Rivervale. They will probably put Mordin on the other side of a zone boundary. Maybe they will reprogram it, but I'm sure that's harder.
    there is a simple solution
    # Jan 29 2001 at 3:14 AM Rating: Default
remove the faction received for handing Modrin the seal... this will make it necessary to actually bake some items before receiving any faction

I am absolutely convinced, after over a month of hunting in the east wastes that verant, two patches ago, nerfed snow griffs.

There use to be a slew of them in the southern central portion of the zone.

Now, they seem to be the rarest of all the "common" spawns in the zone.

This pisses me off to no end since not only are the Griffs rare, but the eggs are a very rare drop.

    Some Quest Info
    # Jan 25 2001 at 3:12 PM Rating: Decent
Just wanted to share some of the things Ive learned from doing this quest.

First, THIS IS MULTIQUESTABLE! Have read some other posts that said it was'nt, but it is. Did it last night with no problems. Being an Enchanter it is easy for me to learn new skills, being able to buff my int to 230. Made 2 of each of the baked goods(except the souffle), and mine in first. Stayed grouped(dont know if this made any differance) we both got exp, but only I got the faction. Then I handed in the baked good first and had my partner hand in the napkin. Again, both of us got exp, but only he got the faction. Did this with the first 3 item as Im still hunting snow giffon eggs.

I have become a master baker, potter and brewer(was already a master blacksmith) in a couple hour for each.
Having a high Int helps a ton. Never spent more then 40pp to get my skill to 135. Its just a matter of sitting down and doing it. All the item have been trivial and only failed once on any of them, when making rabbit stew. As a master Jewel crafter(JC 208) I know that every now and again you can fail, no matter how trivial it is.

Now about getting the ingredents for the baking. There was a very good post bout the Griffs. They seem to be on the most hunted list these day. Also a couple of patches ago, the eastern wastes got more populated. Very hard to kite Griffs without pulling a bunch of yard trash. I would suggest root and nuke with a partner. Then Invis to med. Have 2 eggs so far in about 2 hours hunting and 10 griffs. Hard to find them these days. Is it just me or has Verant has found someway to make what ever your hunting rare. When I need kodiac meet, couldnt swing a dead snow cougar without hitting a Griff. Now that Im hunting griffs they're are very hard to find and I keep tripping over kodiacs.

Well , Im rambling now....hope some of this helps, cant wait to get my seal. Good luck to everyone.

I have 140 baking skill, 200 Wis and 104 Int.
And I failed doing the Souffle. So that CAN happen.
Fortunatly even at lvl 52 the griffs give me xp.

What I was really UPSET about that quest is that, having doing a lot of the Druid Epic Quest i had for now 3 months the Mixing Bowl that Ella Foodcrafter tell me to keep because: "ITS IS A GOOD BOWL"
For the 1st recipe I tried it with this bowl, crafted by the best druid in the universe to be the best mixing bowl. And it said "those items doesnt combine etc..."
In rage I destroyed the bowl and bought a regular ol’ mising bowl. and that one worked.

And I was waiting for now 3 months to see if that bowl was really helping at doing food as it was supposed to.

Maybe I read the quest wrong... but it doesn't say you mix the egss does it? you just bake them with spice.
Mixing bowl - and how I got mine

Well after being very frustrated for a long time on trying to find a mixing bowl, i decided to potter one, being a master potter and all. To make one you must take the following.

1 LARGE bowl pattern (not mixing bowl pattern as the pottery book says.)
    2 large blocks of clay
    1 flask of water

    combine in the potter wheel.

take the unfired bowl and put it and the firing sheet (just the plain one - not quality or anything) into the oven and combine. It was trivial for me in both steps at skil 120 in pottery.
and viola you have a 4 slot mixing bowl used for baking.

I also believe there are vendors that sell the bowl, i seem to remember getting on in west karana or qeynos area. but that was such a long time ago.

    Happy baking,

    Buy bowl at Canloes bakery

The lady at Canloe's bakery in West Freeport(where most people buy their muffins for the Muffins for Pandos Quest) sells mixing bowls. About 1 plat I think. The Bakery is near the Monk guild.

    I love the seal.

You can also buy mixing bowls at the red-haired elven merchant who resides in the hut near the oven in Firiona Vie. She sells muffins, water, and the like...I believe her last name contains the word "muffin" in it, as a matter of fact. The oven, and adjacent hut, are on the left side of the bridge as you exit FV.
    Some tips and tricks

If you are not interested right away in doing the Shawl series of quests, it is also possible to do just the Seal of Thoridain quest, without having done the two other shawl quests first. Just say to Boronin "what chore" and you'll get the first no drop thingy to give to Mordin. I am apprehensive to all them dwarves, and still am, after receiving the final seal. All the baking stuff was trivial to me with baking skill 142.

All meat/eggs comes from mobs in eastern wastes.
Tundra Kodiak meat from a Tundra Kodiak, easy mob for a level 45 druid, dropped meat at second mob.
Ulthork meat, obviously form the Ulthorks, very common drop, hunters and warriors in North East section of EW, easy mobs for 45.
Snow bunny meat, hehe, lots of snow bunnies, especially in south west section of zone, I had two meat in about 5 bunnies.
Snow griffin eggs, the hard part, although I got all 4 eggs in about 14 normal snow griffins(didnt try the Elder snow grifs).
Most things are no drop, especially the baked stuff, so no baking for others I'm afraid.

I have my seal equipped, it gives off as much light as a GL I think, and I'm very happy with it. And I plan to do the whole Shawl series later anyway, so now I already have this little thingy!
It is a fun quest, I got almost a bub in 45 by havinf to kill blue mobs(grifs especially), could finally use my baking skill to good use and have received a nice reward. Yay!!
And my brewingskill is also 100+...

    Good luck,
    Greetings, Grove Treesong.

The best tip, has been posted before I think.
How to get baking skill to 132?

Buy couple of backpacks full of batwings(for instance at lady mage/enchanter venddor in erudin castle, there are more vendors that have unlimited supply), buy coupld of backpacks full of fish(for instance captain Rohand in South qeynos has unlimited supply of fish, both cheap components, and go make hundreds of fish rolls, dont know the exact recipe, but its just bat wings and fish, extremely easy recipe, no messy backpacks full of spices, suaces, eggs, dough, whatever. They become trivial at about 132, I think. If you even want it further, then go make the famous rat ear pie(for Vin Moltor, paw of Opolla quest) Buy rat ears or giant ratears(vendors at newbie areas), forgot rest of components, but also an very simple recipe, no need of pie tins, or pots, or eggs, or dough, so easy ingredients, and get skill at 142, like did.

I know, maybe I should call myself a "master" baker with that kind of background, but......Thoridain thought my Snow griffin egg Souflle was wonderfull, so what the hell.. ;)
