I was trying to find this for awhile, and its generous to say "near the ramp". It can get quite far out.
You could spend hours looking. I brought my mage over, and found 3 traps in 2 minutes.

You can cull the above messages for the approximate trap locations; they exist on both sides of the trench to Kael. One point I haven't seen made clearly is that the traps seem to be randomly spawn either the Death Squads (common) or Tanik (uncommon). I've tried some of the locations multiple times that people got Tanik in and got the DS instead. Have not yet been able to confirm if Tanik only spawns at night as one person asserted.

Despite a previous post of mine the /pet guard trick does still work as long as you're far enough away from the AoC for Kael.

I'm tempted to just sit here and run over the same trap over and over until I get Tanik.

If you got a pet, start at the mouth of the ramp and put him on guard. he will "face" the trap spots to trigger either death squad or tanik. stop often and recheck. took me all of 5min

Tanik Greskil Spawn Point Tips
# Jan 28 2013 at 2:54 PM Rating: Decent
Just finished this 4th portion of the original Coldain Shawl quest, in preparation for doing the 2.0 later. I went to the top of the ramp which leads down to Kael Drakkal to the spot marked on the Eastern Wastes mapfiend map (-6447, +3546). I had with me my Guardian Wolf familiar which is purchased with Station Cash. This wolf growls when anyone is near, and was invaluable in finding Tanik. When using this familiar and Tanik is near, you will see an emote, "_____________'s familiar growls at You stumble". Keep going over that small area where the wolf emotes and Tanik will spawn. You'll see the emote, "You stumble over a pile of snow exposing a Coldain!" Good luck, fellow questers.

# Jun 02 2006 at 5:30 PM Rating: Decent
you can train the giants across the entry way to kael from the north side on the highest point & they will disapear when they try to cross just make sure u have levi. Also i noticed that a particular part of the ground immulated at night time will i was triggering DS seemed strange & i only seen this once during my session. Don't know what it has to do with. It was straight east of the kael ramp entry not to far. i got this guy to spawn at - 5687 + 4370

Thanks alot Tadwenai, used the pet method and poped only one DS/4. Druid charmmed a bunny and found him in no time:) Happy owner of Shawl #4, and off to five, I hope the info for #5 is just as helpful.

Sophists: 37 DRU of Xegony.
Got him.

On the north side of the ramp, he spawned at -5693, 4306. This was after I spawned about 7 or 8 rounds of Kromrif Death Squads.

I'm a necromancer, and I used my pet and the Guard command in finding him. When I followed the direction my pet was pointed in and clicked Guard every so often to make sure I was headed in the right direction, the pet would ultimately lead me to a Death Squad point, until finally I got Tranik. THANK YOU GENER, and thanks everyone who posted (especially Tadwenai).

F.

Edit: By the way, I am a level 38 necromancer, and I had temp and SoW. SoW is VERY important in doing this, because otherwise you will get squished by the Death Squad at my level almost instantly.

Pet Trick
# Sep 26 2004 at 1:04 AM Rating: Decent
Was doing tis for few friends and spawned Tanik twice using magician pet. Took about 30 minutes total. Once at -6703,3885 and -5683, 4252. Just make sure normal mob spawns are dead and pet will find spawns easily.
Tanik
# Sep 15 2004 at 8:59 PM Rating: Decent
Tried all the methods posted before mine. Running along the line from 5600-6600 doesn't work. Especially when he spawns East of the ramp entrance. Use a pet and have them guard. Run ahead in this line of sight. Keep doing this as posted by some below. Eventually after some giant spawns you will come across Tanik. Apparently you have to step on the EXACT spot to spawn. Ran over and over varying my angle slightly. Good luck.

Rallos Zek warrior method works!
# Jun 12 2004 at 12:57 PM Rating: Decent
I created a Rallos Zek following warrior as suggested below. Camped my 30th lvl cleric at the ramp with SoW on & the vial ready.
Then I ran the warrior along the south spawn line. Within 5 mins 2 Death Squad Kromrif's spawned, but ignored me running around their ankles. They popped after about 2mins.
After another 5 mins or so I spawned Tanik along the same south spawn line, just nearer the ramp entrance. Sat down, hailing Tanik & camped out. Then anti-virus scan started up, so the machine ground to a dead-slow & by the time I got my cleric back Tanik had popped. Re-camped the cleric, turned off anti-virus & tried again.
Back to the warrior & after about 10mins I spawned Tanik yet again - this time at the same spot as the previous DS (Kael end of the spawn line).
Same again - sit, hail, camp - continue to hail throughout the camping. Then I logged my cleric back in & Tanik was still up - ran up to him, hailed & did the hand in!
Many thanks to Unloved & Tadwenai for this tatic - worked a treat.

One thing to add - all the spawns happened on a clear night, so the spawn isn't time dependant it appears

This is the last shawl that can be MQ-ed and pottery is ultra-cheap to get to 20 over the trivial. Easier to get the temp-alt up in pottery than trying to camp/log before Tanik despawns.

Wow, Tadwenai, awesome post. After reading what you wrote tried to find your spawn line and up popped a dwarf. Game time was 12 am on a Sunday, I was just a couple steps off your line with my alternate. I was just scouting it out, had not even made a level 1 warrior yet. I was in zone 10 minutes at best and reffering to your post while on site.

Thank you Tadwenai =), Scarless of the Nameless
Poped twice today
# Jun 10 2004 at 3:35 PM Rating: Default
Ok, did the quest today and used almost every kind of animal to sit and guard. Did cross sections on the map and popped him twice. He does not pop at the same place twice and the aggro giants are near him so its easy to get a bad reading and pop guards instead of quest NPC. Don't pay attention to the people posting coordinates. They get you in the general area but don't give you more than that.

OK, I tried checking each of the spawn points listed above, occasional Death Squad spawns but no Dwarf.

I tried the walk slow with no SoW or levitation, resulted in a very beat up gnome enchanter but still no dwarf.

I snuffed my lowest toon and made a warrior of rallos zek, no dwarf and now no Death Squad either.

Finally I tried the charmed snow bunny approach. Found my bunny, took him to the two trees north of the rampo and sat him down. Told him to guard and hey presto he points at a spot in the distance. So I put on SoW, levitiation and start a line on my map. My plan was to move the bunny around the area and try to plot several transpect lines on the map to locate the exact spot.

MaDe my run to the end of the first transcept line and stop plotting. Then I run over to the side planning to call the bunny over and get a 60 degree angle on the first line. BANG up pops the dwarf at last, after 4 RL days of trying. I was very glad I read these posts and his gate vial ready as I'd have been real ticked to have to do that twice.

COMMENTS: I had SoW on and I was levitating so neither of those items stopped me from getting the pop. But one thing that did match with the notes above is that he popped exactly on the northern line plotted by the spawn points noted in Tadwenai's post. But he didn't pop at the spot the snow bunny was pointing to, that little blighter was pointing to a spot to the west of where the dwarf popped, must have smelled a giant instead. Just good luck that I moved in the direction I did for the second transcept.

BTW - I don't think the dwarf or the giants like the cold as they didn't seem to pop when it was snowing. I can;t be absolutely sure but carrying a meteological rocket to stop the snow ro having a druid to stop it might have given me more chances to get spawns. Worth thinking about.

Tanik spawn location? No-pet method
# May 26 2004 at 12:22 PM Rating: Excellent
While preparing to finish up the 4th Shaw quest I looked over all the pages I could find that discussed Tanik Greskil. There seems to be a huge variation in posted locations as well as the walk don't run theory. I decided to do some testing of my own. First I compiled a list of all the spawn locations people posted. Here they are.

North side of ramp.
-5680, 4126
-5670, 4576
-5672, 4307
-5679, 4206
-5683, 4252
-5687, 4435
-5696, 3600
-5702, 4505
-5702, 4384

South side of ramp.
- 6644, 4337
- 6703, 3885
- 6759, 4410
- 6759, 4202

Clumped together like this I am sure you notice what in noticed. Many seem to fall along an East/West line at different points.

As my main toon is a 46 Ranger and can not do the pet trick everyone post’s about I did it the Non-Caster way, multi-quest.

Have your Vile of Velium Vapors ready. Camp your main toon at the end of the ramp ready to log on once you get Tanik to spawn.

First, I did what “unloved” suggested and created a Level 1 Warrior follower of Rallos Zek. This allowed me to spend the better part of a day testing spawn points without getting stopped by the Giants every time they spawned.

Second, I tested each of the listed spawn points walking and running. None of them worked for me. However while running from spot to spot I did manage to spawn the death squad a few times so made notes on the locations to test later. As the Giants would not agro this Rallos Zek follower I was able to determine they are up for 2 minutes until they pop as long as they do not agro.

I did notice running East to West the zone is made up of very faint light and dark lines. If you look at the screen without focusing on any one thing it is pretty noticeable. This lead me to try my spawn line theory.

I lined my toon up on the E/W spawn point I had noted ( in the -56** area most noted by people) so there was no variation running E/W and then I ran forward and backward along this line. Starting Back by the cluster of trees on the North side of the ramp I walked from about –5679, 3500 to –5679, 6000 and got 4 Death Squad to spawn while running. Frustratingly I was never able to get anything to spawn again. So as there is such a wide variation of –56** locations I moved over a bit and tried again this time at –5677. This time I tried it walking and boom….got a spawn at –5677, 4485 of 2 DS . Yea!!!! I continued to walk back and forth between –5677, 3500 and –5677, 6000 and after 15 to 20 minutes boom…..got another spawn of 2 DS this time a –5677, 4366. This time I tried it running. Boom… got 4 DS to spawn at –5600,4206. Ok so I continued this for most of the day and got 7 spawns all at different locations on the –5677 line. I was never able to get a repeat spawn point and went on to get 4DS, 4DS, 2DS and finally 4DS and Tanik Greskil spawned about three steps apart from each other. I spent so much time verifying this theory that I never tried to find another “spawn line”.

Reading all the comments and my own testing leads me to believe that the spawn points are random along the spawn line. I also believe the spawn of the Death Squad or Tanik Greskil is also random. Lack of Attention to Detail caused me to not nail down the spawn time but I found it between 15-20 minutes.

Once Tanik Greskil did spawn I did as another suggested and continued to “Hail” him. Once the Death Squad was gone I sat down next to him and camped, continuing to hail him until I logged. I then logged on my main toon, whom I had strategically camped at the end of the ramp, and within 45 seconds I was on top of him hailing him until I could get the Vial of Velium Vapors, I had already made so I didn’t have to do this a second time, out and give it to him. No chit chat I just gave it to him and he immediately popped and I had Tanik's Note to turn in to Loremaster Borannin.

Oh I did have a couple of random DS spawns while running around but did not them. One was at the top of the ramp to the north side and the other was to the south side. I just focused on this one spawn line. And I got a few pictures to send for Tanik and the Death Squad that is not even listed in the Bestiary.

So in a nut shell: Completely random along the E/W line, at least on the north side of the ramp. Also the spawn of 2DS, 4DS or Tanik is random. Running or Walking, though maybe smaller steps increase your chance of hitting the trigger spot as would be the case in real life? DS will de-pop after about 2 minutes if they do not agro. Spawn cycle seems to be between 10-15 minutes. And you can keep Tanik there if you contiue to "Hail" him.

Good luck, and happy hunting!

The run thing is absolutely false, I was sow'd and running as I stumbled over him. Being an enchanter, it made it difficult to continuously try and charm a snow bunny, then run to the spot. However, it is basically the only way to find where he is going to spawn.

I set up in the valley just north of Kael's Ramp/Tunnel in EW, fairly close to the wall. Had the pet guard, and ran straight ahead of where the pet was pointing. After nearly 10 attempts, and 10 spawns of the Death Squad, I finally had Tanik pop.

It is a good idea to already have the Vial of Velium Vapors on you when you do this so you don't have to spawn him again =o)

Walk! Ue pet as described by others, but don't run. Learned this from another and worked like a charm. This is after hours of frustration and spawning the stupid KDS. For whatever reason, walking makes the dwarf spawn and not the kds.

No clue why. Maybe a myth, but it worked.

I was running when I spawned the Dwarf, however I'd set my pet to guard, run back a few steps, set pet to follow, then guard again, so I never moved too far too fast.

Initially I did try the walking trick, but that made getting away from the death squads rather too painful for my liking: they got in quite a few hits before I turned run on again and got away.

With pet and Sight graft was able to spawn Tanik 4 times in about 1 hour...
Just move to the end of the ramp, Command pet to guard, with sight graft look through your pets eyes and move away from him...
If you are a necro you can Feign Death when the DS pops, then they depop after a couple min and your pet acquires a new target.
Got 3 peoples notes this way in very short time...
BTW..necros rock :)

I've used the pet method and found it works well also. My friend charmed a pretty snow griffon and we set him to guard then walked in the direction he was facing. The first time it seemed to give nothing (when the pet turned to the right facing away from the Kael ramp), the second time with pet moved more onto the ramp we spawned the DS twice when we went in the direction he was facing.. still looking for Tanik but the pet trick works well so far.

I said "I will help you", and he said that th eleader of the giants that are chasing him has an elixir that he needs. then he screams here they come and he lays back down. 3 frost giants and a named frost giant with a last name of something like Squatter come running over the hill and attack the dorf. He says something to the effect of how great i am and he will tell his people in Thurg what a great warrior I am. Says take this I hope it helps you.
