The placeholders for Prince Skriatat are "an owlbear grappler " and/or "an owlbear razorbeak" and/or "an owlbear cub" that spawn and roam the general area outside the NW cave when owlbears inhabit the NW cave.
My experience with trying to get this mob to spawn, and I imagine it would go for the grimling and sonic wolf named, that there has never been more then two of these placeholders up at any given time. I could be wrong, but that is what I have seen.
first, have the owlbears win the war (this is detailed elsewhere). second, kill ph as many times as it takes ( took me 212 phs to get him). What is the ph? I am about to explain.
There is a wandering owlbear (a cub, razorbeak or grappler - never a fleshrender) that can spawn in a large general area and paths all around that area. From the north caves (don't mistake the ph pather for the pather that comes out of the cave) down to the south path, from the eastern fort to the river valley west, find that pather and just keep killing ( like dory just keep swimming). Now I have to repeat it for grimlings and sonic wolves.
Actually, the owlbears do not have to have won the war and be in control of the whole of Hollowshade Moor. In fact, they only need to be in control of the cave in the northwest corner of the zone. I know this because I killed Prince Skriatat yesterday while the owlbears were in control of the northwest cave, the sonic wolves were in control of the east caves, and the grimlings were in control of their camp to the south.
Your description of how to isolate the PH is correct - for me, the PHs that I saw were all grapplers, except for one cub.
The fact that Prince Skriatat popped while all 3 factions were up in the zone leads me to believe that maybe it's possible to pop Curfang without the wolves being in control of the whole place, but so far, I haven't been able to get that to happen, but then again, I've only killed maybe 20 cycles of Curfang PHs.
excellent. I didn't know that but it is good info. it is easier to not have to worry about the war when trying to spawn it, and once the owlbears control the zone, you wont have to think about it. you can afk and come back any time. I am currently trying to spawn prince ( and other owlbear names) for another toon hunter achievement. Thank you Ironic for the additional information
Saw this guy walking around the northern part of HM, near the Owlbear Cave. I had never fought him, and he is a named, so I had to get that check in the block :) Me and my Teddy melleed this guy in about 30 sec's. He dropped the Brain, and no low levels were in the zone, so I looted it. This was the first time I had seen this mob in the zone in a long time, so this post is more for confirming that he's still there and droppin the same stuff :)
I am level 23 and had to run from him - a nice dark elf saved the day and killed him for me at the zone line - got the circlet - he let me loot him. Its has some nice stats for my level! I found him wandering right in front of the outpost. He was hitting me for 80+ each hit and my root spell would not stick.
In case you can't guess by his loot, he is an owlbear, and thus an Animal. He spawns somewhere near the owlbear cave in Hollowshade and wanders toward the Grimling areas. He is an easy kill for me as a 41 Ranger, but hits hard. He has never much resisted Snare, Panic Animal or Stinging Swarm, so I just do that and wail on him. As with all owlbears, Snare, Fear and fear again til dead.
I have killed this bum three times before I hit level 30 and he conned dark blue all three times so the listed level is definately too high. I am a chicken and would never solo an even con or worse.
Cattywumpus, 30th Vah Shir Shaman.
BTW in the three kills he dropped the brain all three times (twice i had to let it rot as there was no one in the zone who wanted it) and an owlbear guardian talon once, along with the usual owlbear junk.
