North of Castle
# Sep 11 2004 at 4:46 AM Rating: Decent
I've been spawning the Tormented Vah shir by killing everything to the north of Coterie Castle. Grol Bakus definitely are its PH. Probably sonic wolves and bats too. Wipe them all out if you have already wiped out the Grol Bakus.

How to Spawn em.
# Aug 21 2004 at 1:49 PM Rating: Excellent
I've done this quest 5 times now. And just got done getting 7 skulls in 2 hours. Here's how I got em to spawn:

Start at the NE corner of zone. Kill anything cept Coterie east of the -1000 loc, working your way south to SE corner. Then do the same working west along southern zone wall, ignoring Grims.

Tormented have popped most frequently in NE corner and wandering East and West along southern zone wall for me.

From my observation, any animal or alien can be a PH. I have yet to observe any solid spawn point since they moved em outta the SW corner, oh so long ago.

Good Luck!

Well, I have spent around 4 days this June camping these guys since I only need 2 more skulls to get this quest finished and not a single one has spawned. I even have my lvl 65 druid tracking thru-out the zone. Anyone know if these guys are still spawning on Bertox??

Has anyone camped this guy recently? If so do you know where he spawns or the general area at least? I'm a warrior trying to get this shield for my little cleric so i can't track, so any info would be appreciated.

Starforge is correct with the new spawn points. I have been hunting the North side of the castle off and on for the last couple days and have managed to get 4 skulls so far. Three out of the four tormented vah shirs that have spawned for me have spawned straight north of the castle near some rocks at /loc +1533, -1120, they only stay there for around 30 seconds before wandering off so if you can't track you'll have to be quick on your feet.
Hope this helps anyone who is working on the shield of bane warding quest.

BTW all of the tormenteds that I spawned spawned at the exact location I gave in the previous post. I always killed everything in the general area so I can't say that such and such is the exact PH, but I can say without a doubt that this spawn point is the one............. GO to this /LOC and kill everything that pops there.,, not to mention anything else in the general area, if a warrior can get all 8 skulls in a few days than any tracker shouldn't have any trouble.

Good luck on the shield quest, it's a darn good shield IMHO =)

RE: Spawn Point

Ok, I went into TM needing 5 skulls. I hadn't found a single one since they changed the spawns. I went north of the Coterie castle, in the NE corner of the zone, and started whacking the usual ph's (Grol Baku Soldiers and Darkwing Bats). I avoided the dogs except when they agroed. The main problem with a soloing druid is the bats can't be rooted. Everything else can, though. Just pull the bat with your best dot, and hit it with your nuke while it chews on you. Get a good one off and it starts running. Another problem then arises: bat corpses are bugged, so you target the corpse whether you're facing it or not in this corner. Loot-n-drop. Farmed a few 10 slot bags full of acrylia while I was doing this, and got my 5 skulls in 2 hours 15 mins. The TVS always spawned around a bald hill just NE of the Coterie Castle, I came to affectionately call 'Old Knobby'. They spawn all over the hill, there's no set spawn point. Could be on top, on the front, or around the back. Had one spawn in a rock, and while I pulled it out, rooted, and started dotting, another spawned right where I pulled it to. So kill all the GBS's and Bats, they're all ph's. But do stay in the valley. No need to wander, anything that spawned here and left will be back or despawn in half an hour. Now all I need is the charcoal and I have my shield again. Good luck and have fun. :)
Moved Spawn
# Nov 12 2003 at 3:47 PM Rating: Decent
Definately moved the spawn point. Now it seems there are several spawn points along the zoneline north of the large castle....definately 2 different spawn points at least. Around loc pos 1000, neg 1200.
Timing the spawn
# Aug 26 2003 at 1:10 AM Rating: Decent
I've been doing the BW quest for a bit and I'm 99% sure of one of the PH's. All of the previous posts are correct. It's NE of the Vamp Castle in a little area with a large, bald hill. The PH is either a normal Darkwing Bat or a Grol Baku Soldier. Ignore the wolves or any named Grol or Bats.

The roamer typically paths between the wall of the castle and the small rolling hills NE of the castle. Basically, just kill those locals near the hill. Don't bother leaving the valley.

Eventually, you WILL get a TVS to spawn. To time the next one, I'm hoping you have a tracker. I usually time the spawn by leaving an item on the corpse and keeping it targeted to watch the decay timer.

At six minutes, look at tracking to see the mob that appears at the top, since most are organized from newest to oldest spawn. By doing this and realizing the pathing you should be able to farm the TVS'es about as well as you can, considering their random nature.

Good luck!

I was able to collect 5 skulls in fairly short order after a friend showed me how. I killed all the bats and aliens around the big Vamp Castle. After a period of doing this I checked my track, and voila!
If I had to guess at a spawn point, I would say on the right side of the castle as you look at the front. I killed 3 of the 5 standing there. The other 2 I killed on the left side, but they were on the move, coming FROM the right hand side.
Good luck, and happy hunting.

I have been camping these guys... or at least trying to for the past 4 days now. The locations in the walkthrough where they are said to pop, I have never seen Anything spawn there, let alone one of these... Anyone know whats up?

and yeah I tried the wall tricks and everything, never anything behind there. =(

I've been camping these on and off for a few weeks, just going for another shield (this one to keep, since they're too hard to get to sell these days). Since that patch 2 weeks ago, nothing has spawned in the SW corner. I petitioned, and a gm said they were unaware of any spawn changes in Tenebrous. I put in a bug report, on his suggestion, but nothing has changed since. I suggest EVERYBODY put in a bug report about this. Maybe they'll either reactivate the spawn or post why they took it out. Can't hurt.

Have you hugged your tree today?

I *have* received a message from the GMs (last night, in fact) in which they stated that the spawns have changed. No hints on where they're to be found now. My friend and I killed the usual PH-types for a while until one spawned, at which point we highsunned it and followed it to what we presumed was its spawn point. We spent the better part of an hour killing critters in that area (near the entrance to the grimling forest cave). No more skellies spawned, tho.

Stuck PH's
# Mar 07 2003 at 11:35 AM Rating: Good
In the SW corner of TM I've only seen bats and "a grol baku soldier" spawn as PHs for this guy. The Tormented skels and both PHs can spawn inside the wall. In bear-form, I can stick my head in the wall and see them, but cannot target by clicking or using "Target Nearest NPC" button. The bats and the skell have a decent aggro radius, so no prob, just stick your head in the wall and they'll come to you. The dratted aliens are a different story.

I have finally found a solution that seems to work every time. Stick your head in the wall to where you can see the mob and type "/target a_grol_baku_soldier". The mob will be targeted, you can attack (if you can reach), cast (if you aren't squatting trying to look into the wall) or sic the dog on him (my personal favorite).

Hope this helps - happy hunting.

Not sure if it was posted before, but when you have a Mob stuck in the wall. Use an area effect spell, such as Upheaval. Pull them out of the wall every time for me.

Bugged
# Jan 22 2003 at 3:50 PM Rating: Decent
Spawn of the Tormented Vah Shir just gotta be bugged. I camped the spot near wall from Katta for 8 hours without any pops. I finally petitioned it, and suddenly i got 2 skells during 2 hours... That's gotta be bugged. Im not sure if the GM did something or what? At the excact time when pops started, i went into Katta to speak to Roshawna Rhorer again, to see if i missed something, or they'd changed the quest, and when i got back there it was... A tormented Vah Shir. Can anyone confirm any of this?

One of the PH's (and indeed the tormented itself) can spawn behind the wall, which makes it tricky to get. Since it is always a 6 min spawn, if you dont get a pop then it is in the wall.

I also have seen the tormented spawn very quickly after speaking to Roshawna; but by the same token have not seen a spawn after speaking to her. Alwats wondered if there is a min repspawn on the tormented that can be triggered by talking to her. However, cross zone communication in EQ (what you do in one zone causes something in other) isn't something I put faith in.

As a cleric i use Sense undead all the time in Tenebrous Mountains. Normally two differerent mobs turn up. A named vampire, and some undead Coterie (forgot excact name). When I camped the spot, I always get all eager and stuff so i kill the Tormented Vah Shir without using sense undead. hehe... So actually i have never ever seen it target it. About the spawning time... lately i timed the repop times. It's closer to 7 minutes. I would also like to hear if there's anything you can do to trigger the spawn.

Hope anyone have input on that... im about to believe in anything... if just a freeking Vah shir would pop! =)

This being my first real quest for my 48 druid. I decided to come one day ahead of my day to camp this to get the lay of the land, /ooc camp check, not one on this guy, run over to loc n 1267, p1747,... tracking, tracking a tormented vah shir,... kille dit, nice one down 7 to go. nexy day... start at about 10pm, have gotten 2 skulls in the last hours, i sit exact at the loc i said. Very easy sport for dru to camp, damn bats are hardest cant snare or root em, oh well can kit em though, the are animals :) its 11:08pm now just killed 2nd and waiting for more. Will post more later
Despawns
# Aug 27 2002 at 3:15 AM Rating: Decent
In the NW Corner where their PHs can spawn in the castle wall or in the tree, these things can despawn if they spawn in the tree or the castle wall. It happened to me twice, and I have 6 skulls. This is probably due to the fact that they would sometimes be stuck in the wall and people report it as a bug.

but...

I just see it as a spawn that was just made rarer because of the fact that everything else can spawn at a higher chance since they don't despawn when they spawn in the wall or tree.

Camped in the SW corner last night and had one spawn in the castle wall. I used Sense Undead and it targetted the beastie. Had to nuke him to get him to come out and play.

3 Spawn areas
# Mar 15 2002 at 7:46 PM Rating: Good
To find the Tormented Vah shir in this zone you have to kill any of their PH's. In the three corners of the zone, SE, SW, and NE I believe, there are numerous bat/grol baku aliens that spawn and they can all be PH's for these guys. I've been in this zone for a long time now and found them to be rather elusive. Each mob has about a 6min respawn time and the vah shir can spawn at any of those spawn points around those three corners. Hope that helps. And BTW: they conned light blue and green to me at 53 and they were really easy to kill specially for a Druid.
