Just killed him with a 52 ranger (myself), 48 ranger, 52 cleric, 51 chanter and a 34 wiz, and he wasn't that hard to kill. He droped the key for 7th floor and a Talisman of Vhal Sera (2ac 4cha 3wis 3int, neck) for brd shm nec mage wiz ench, and it's lore no drop.
All in all, a good time was had by all.

Well my group took him down tonight and relly had no problems at all other than he kept blinding me, we had a 52 pally (me), 53 cleric, 46 druid, 35 chanter, and a 38 monky...the fight was pretty long and he conned dark blue to me but the chanter's pet never turned on her and no one died. I am thinking after the recent patches that they might have made him a little easier or somethin..just thought i'd let ya'll know

That pet has like 150hps, it wouldnt last long if it turned against the owner.
Considering all the group members cept the wiz were equal level with Val Shera it makes sense that they would have been beaten to a pulp. What obviously happened is the wiz's pet moved in first, and then Val Sera charmed it. It turned on the wiz and he could not get a root off on it. The rest of the group was too distraced trying to take down Val Sera who systematically destroyed them as the wizs own pet exacted some revenge on his owner for all his bossiness earlier in its life :) Or perhaps it was entirely different :P

Last night me (48 war), my wife (46 cleric), my buddy (48 war), and aonther buddy (50 chanter) Zoned in and he was at the zone, so we bagan to fight him. You cant stun him so disrupting his spells was a pain. We got him down to where u realy couldnt see any health left on his bar , AND ! BAM !, he gated ! !

Pulling was easy, bats didn't agro...but once he was in the first hall he nuked me with Insidious Retrogression....

I managed to tab him twich, and was back at full life....and then next second i was down to 10% life again...
He also used the Spells Ignite Bones + Darkness...on the end he charmed my pet, and i died =/
I would say this bad guy has around 10khp...

Today i have been killed by him on the first floor. I medded up in the southwest corner of the tower when i was reading "VhalSera begins to cast a spell". Then something with levitate came closer and darkness'ed me. I died 2 seconds later, but have been slain by a shadowbone.

I think casting message ranges are independent of altitude, so even if a mob is wayyyyy above or below you, as long as he's in your X/Y axis range, you'll see the cast message. The levitating thing you saw were the two specs guarding the hall to the mirrors. I believe they can cast darkness line. The shadowbones that killed you are lying in the pit in the center of the main room, usually in their crumpled bones form. Vhal didn't actually kill you.
Your point about the casting message ranges being independant of altitude is correct - however, the only floor of ToFS that is actually over the first floor is the seventh. All the others, including Vhal's home of 6b, aren't.
Check out the /loc coordinates on the EQAtlas maps and you'll see what I mean. The first-floor mirror is at roughly (500, 200) but Vhal's hangout is at about (400, -350).

This guy is a badass. He is not 45 because i was 47 and he conned red. The guy is very hard to take down. We had 51ranger 60cle 54war 47mag 55wiz and it took us 8minutes to kill him. We had to watch out for 1 bat that added and it was kind of a pain to do that. No one was in dangeor of dieing because of the good healer but withought good healing you stand no chance. his charm is easily resisted but his fear is hard to resist at 47
Ok what prolly happened. Someone tagged this fruit all the way through the tower going DOWN DOWN DOWN through all the portals and little did he know THE MOBS FOLLOW YOU! Yes he can also fit through the windows.
You cannot go back to the previous floor. Atleast not from 2nd to 1st.

Just posting what I experienced tonight. Me (52 druid) and my friend (553 pally) went after this guy in an attempt to get the key. Somehow we managed to solo pull him when those bats around him flew away for a brief time. So the pally sits there and beats away at him while I heal some when needed. Starts getting pretty rough and the pally ends up having to use LH. We get VhalSera down to about the Vha in his health and he gates, gains some life and comes walking down the stairs again with no adds. By that time I am oom and we really need to get out of there so we run to the mirror under the bridge and get ported back to the entrance of the 6th floor (had hoped it would port us outside). We thought we were safe for a brief moment but then VhalSera kinda fell from the ceiling on top of us and continued to beat the pally. While this was happening I was medding trying to get enough for an evac and the pally luckily had his soulfire in his inventory which he used the CH off of 1 time. By the time I got us succored, the pally was at half a bub of life and both of us were oom. One day we will have our revenge.

We just killed Vhalsera. This guy was "VERY EASY" He only landed on spell on the monk and that only lasted for about 2sec. After the monk got him to 50% Hps I nuke him. He dropped the earing, Gnome skin legs and the Key to the 7th floor.

a 56 monk can solo here and get to 7th floor alone if cleric with him it's cake if full group you wont even notice themobs you pull for fun most everything till 6th level was green to me today.

Thats not solo, solo means alone and if you were 2ppl your not solo you could have askt can 2 ppl lvl 56 clearic and a lvl 56 monk take him out (you see no solo there).

hehe aye hes right, thats not solo and you should be able to do it, better with 2 tanks in case one gets charmed or mezzed, with only one it would then head after the cleric so be careful

This fight was NO problem. We killed him with a 51 druid, 51 ranger, 50 Shadowknight, and a 37 Ranger. He didn't gate, I think he was out of mana, but he does charm. He charmed the droodie, who doesn't carry a weapon, so she wasn't even hurting anyone, and charmed the SK, who hits awfully hard, but all in all it was a piece of cake.
Have the SK or a Monk type character pull so they can Feign Death if need be to just get him. Other than the charms, he has a simple blind spell that wears off quick, and a fear spell that is easily resistable.

Just killed this guy, took him with : 47 wiz, 47 chanter, 44 cleric, 43 cleric, 44 pal, 44 warrior, 53 pal. he gave us quite the fight, lost the chanter and the warrior. he gated 4 times before he was OOM. Real pain in the butt. INTURRUPT spells DO NOT work on him.. so watch out. and have your Nuke monkeys save some manna for him.

He drops a necklace as well. Called amulet of Vhal'Sera. 2ac 3int 4char 4 wis I think. Must be rare if nobody else posted it yet. Fair item for me (49 enchanter)

This Guy has a TON of HP and beware if he gates get ready for BAD aggro. He will gate back up the ramp in the room most of the time and bring at least 3 to 4 enshrouded bats with him. :) Good luck.

i killed this guy (lvl 54 SK) with my cleric on 2nd comp (lvl 52), nasty but fun fight, he didnt gate, and dropped earring. now or stats on earring are random, or all u guys killed another VahlSera but my earring had these stats: 2AC 3STR 15hp 20mana not good, seeing it drops off this bad guy, i will still use my cougar claw earrings
