I went out to hunt some wooly rhinos so I can gear up my baby human bard.

I am a 75 zerk Qvic+ geared with 400+ AAs and a guildie, 71 Qvic geared Beastlord slaughted everything around the Orc Mercenary area (in and out of the valley) for 320 minutes. Yes, 320 minutes.

For every clearing of the area, we would get a maximum of 5 Rhino spawns. We left with 16 Wooly Rhino Horns.

According to the log parse, I was involved in 1183 kills. The beastlord and myself rarely assisted on each other's kills, so we may have killed about 2000 mobs for 16 horns.
How to Spawn these?
# May 14 2006 at 2:35 PM Rating: Decent
Anybody know what you've got to kill or do to get these Rhinos to spawn more? Specifically please. Every now and then there will be several, and after I kill them, they don't spawn again forEVER!! So I start killing Mammoths, and others, but I haven't found anything to kill that really gets these things to spawn. Need lots of Horns for Expert Human armor and they just don't spawn for.... and of course the horns don't drop very often either.
what are they for?
# Sep 28 2005 at 6:46 PM Rating: Decent
they are for making journeyman clavinger sheets for expert armor, from the Ancestral armor quest for humans....duh.

Looted this the other day and can't sell it and have no idea what it is. Any ideas?

BTW, the item is just "wooly rhino meat" - no other identifiers.

Bards do it better

At level 35 I'm swarmkiting these. Exp is good, loot is crap. Any bard with storebought flute and drum can take these down at a rate of 1 per 2 minutes. Resists can be high, but just keep on running in circles. They beat the hell out of Ulthorks - same amount of time, double the exp.

Orcs killed me twice in an hour. These are no problem. Nice and sloooooow. No casters.

Very tough

Been fear kiting these boys off and on with my troll SK - they've got a ton of hitpoints and hit very hard and very fast. Nice XP, but no loot worth writing home about. I've got some horns too - anyone have any ideas or find anything yet?

A different SK level 40 tactic that seems to work consistently is Darkness, Heart Flutter, be sure the usual taps are up, Heat Blood, then melee with possibly one more darkness. I'm not nuts about kiting in this area...to easy for adds. I like the first darkness just to slow them while I get to safe pull spot and throw other crud on them.

Usually a dark blue leaves me with 1/2 mana and 3/4 HP, maybe less depending on luck of hits and which weapon I choose (finishing with lesser weapon to keep skill up is something I like).

# May 25 2002 at 1:26 AM Rating: Default
A horn, a HQ walrus hide and a skinning rock (ground spawn) are combined in a forge for the 3rd ring in the Coldain Insignia Ring quest.

I have killed literaly a 100 of these and no horn yet. Must be bad luck.
Not too hard

2H Blunt Practice
# Oct 08 2001 at 12:47 PM Rating: Default
Hail all !

These are nice 2H Blunt Practice targets. Not that much xp at lvl 50, and there are hardly any BLUE to be found, still this is a nice thing to do.

Buff yourself up with TALISMAN / ALACRITY / CHLOROPLAST and AGILITY / DEXTERITY / STRENGTH. Make Pet. TALISMAN / ALACRITY it. Memorize RAGE and, if you have, SPIRIT QUICKENING now. Cast it on Pet, and RAGE on you. Should make yourself a pretty tough fighting machine.

Now look for a BLUE con Rhino, TOGORs it, run to pet, cast INCAPACITATE when it comes in range and - turn Pet TAUNT off. So, youre not only practicing 2H Blunt (Skill 177 here now), you also improve in Defense (Skill 179 now).

Happy Hunting out there !

Mage killing
# Sep 02 2001 at 11:48 AM Rating: Default
Mage Tactics: I did these at level 44, get sow, cast expedience on pet, pull with malice, send in pet, nuke, run away until pet taunts rino, nuke again. Very good experience. I've been hunting in the area with the uthroks. I started uthroks at level 35 and i'm 46 now still hunting in the same area. I always hunt there solo except when I duo with a druid friend there. I haven't died here yet, However be careful when pulling because you can agrro a lot of uthroks and you will have to run them to a zone. Sometimes you will need to pull from far away, and kill the snow bunnys, they are place holders for my rinos.

BTW: i have seen another mage successfully soloing rinos by using the level 44 dot, nuking, then healing pet.

I've been soloing these since i became lvl 39...and no outside buffs for me or pet.
I use an earth pet...
1. Hit rhino with Malaise
2. send pet and cast barrier of combustion on pet
3. cast rain of lava on rhino
4. heal pet twice
5. rain of lava again
6. heal pet once more
7. cast bolt and that should do it... maybe another cast if any resists, but i was doing it consistantly since lvl 39.

By the way... what is the rhino meat used for?

Picked one up the other night and cannot find anything about it on any sights. It has no stats and isn't a no drop. Curious if this is just another worthless item in Velious. Any feedback would be great.

You can turns these horns in to an NPC... I am currently trying to find out who, to get a random HQ gem (Star Ruby, Diamond, Emerald...). As of yet I have not found out who/where the NPC is.

Correcting myself - Sorry I was thinking of the Ulthork Tusks. The Tusks are what you turn in for random gems/jewelry... not these horns. Sorry, my bad.

Animal, not Monster
# Jun 10 2001 at 8:57 PM Rating: Decent
These are classified as Animals, not Monsters, as the Panic Animal spell works on them.

They are good xp at 45, when fear kiting, but unfortunately if you have only the Panic Animal spell, they tend to resist quite a bit (40% chance in my testing at level 45). This makes fear kiting a bit painfull, but no where near as bad as straight melee.

Gods these are big when you are standing under one, your fear breaks and it starts double hitting in the high 80s.
Blue to me and great exp
# May 16 2001 at 7:06 AM Rating: Default
The Wooly Rhinos near the Orc fort and the ones near the hut where Korrigan spawns are all blue to me. They are excellent exp and a lot of fun to solo. They hit for about 105 tops (when they are able to hit me ;P)and don't really have that many HP's. They don't hit me much because I am a level 53 SK fear kiting. I normally have about half or a little less mana when I am done. I can normally do 2 without losing 1 bubble of health. The only problem is you have to find them. This is one SK that needs TRACK!

Drops: Unstackable meat, and...?
# Jan 23 2001 at 10:48 PM Rating: Default
The meat had a funny name, like "fine cut of rhino chops" or some such, and didn't stack. My hunting partner had a fit of hysterics when he saw the name. I had a flashback to Omega...

I picked up the same thing. I have been wondering about it since. I think it may be another meat for the quest from the Gnoll in IceClad. You give him a pelt (fur, hide) and a piece of meat. You have to give him certain pelts with certain meats, in certain quantities.

Go to http://eqdb.allakhazam.com/quest.html?quest=967

I will test this out soon. I heard on the message bords that you could hail him and say something like "I have a (high quality walrus hide)" and he will tell you what meat he needs to make the armor. I am not certain about that, but that is what I have heard. Maybe it is a matter of deduction?

Just to add to my previous post, I'm a level 40 Shaman. /agree anything a druid can do a Shaman can do better and look good doing it !

Shame on those Shaman who wear Gatorscale leggings...you are a disgrace to Witch Doctors all over Norrath. We aren't druids so stop dressing like them. Those who wield Testament of Venear (sp?) aren't much better. Get a real shield !

"anything a druid can do a Shaman can do better and look good doing it !" Really?

I never saw a shammy quad raptors in TD. Come to think of it I never saw a shammy port anyone either. Gosh I don't think I have ever gotten an evac from a shammy. Oh yeah and they don't nuke worth a crap.

Don't get me wrong I don't have a problem with Shamans. I just wanted to stick up for one of my chosen professions.
RE: great exp!
# May 22 2002 at 2:24 PM Rating: Default
Yes a Shaman can solo them. They hit very hard though, so the tactic I employed was Root/Rot. I would pull with Malisement, Root, and DoT with Scourge and Venom of the Snake. I'd do that till dead, reapplying VoS and root when needed. They are also fun to pet kite. Park my pet and I would pull with Malisement (i hate resists), Root it and apply both DoTs. Med/Canni in between. Then when root breaks I let it hit me and pull him to my pet and let Cujo bite his heels. After my 2 DoTs the Rhino is so mad that it'll stop at nothing to rip my heart out. I just run in a big circle and let my pet chew him up..I must say pet-kiting is very fun ! Good exp.

Yes, a shammy can solo these. I just took out a blue one with my 37 ogre shaman, ended the battle with 3 bubbles of mana and nearly full health. Collected over half a blue bubble of XP.

Give yourself a fresh regen & SOW right before the battle. I like to have Tnarg and Health up as well. Get his attention with a Malisement to make sure spells stick. Run to a safe distance, Root, Scourge, [optionally] Envenomed Breath, Cannibalize, sit, repeat until critter is dead.

Tomorrow night I will go after an even con one.
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 20 2001 at 5:16 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) As a follow-up to the previous post...My 37 ogre shaman soloed 4 yellows and 2 whites (one at a time, of course) without difficulty. Never went Out-of-Mana, and only once went below 3 bubbles of health. Each kill takes a while, since Scourge is a very slow-acting DOT.
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 23 2001 at 7:54 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) OK, last follow-up...my now-38 ogre shaman found a red wooly rhino last night, and managed to solo him, unassisted. By the end of the battle, I was pretty close to OOM, and at about 3 bubbles of health. Afterward I lit a fire and cooked up a large batch of rhino steaks. It was delicious. :)
#Anonymous, Posted: Apr 06 2002 at 8:44 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Hah! Anything a Druid can do, a Shammy can do better =).
