I did 2 kael raids in arena, outer mobs and poz's. Got a gg into CS to chk vendors for my silk armor quest and i was dubious to all of them after raiding kael. Changing from kos to dubious tells me that they are on cov faction... otherwise why would I go from max kos to dubious later after kael raiding?

You do not get a faction hit for killing "A wyvern" or "A cobalt drake". If you kill Yvolcarn (named wyvern), or Azureake (named drake), you do take a small CoV hit... small enough that killing in the Kael arena for about 30 minutes will fix it easily.

Heh the reason you died 4 times is because damage has absolutely nothing to do with whether their AOE triggers. It's an ability, not a spell, so can't be interrupted. Besides which, dots are only going to be doing damage every 6 seconds... plenty of time to get a spell off for a mob. If you're a non-KOS druid, drakes should be an easy, low-risk kill. Just snare, root, and launch your dots from max range. Our dots have a longer range than their AOE.

Heck, if you're good, you can even throw a drake into your wyvern quad if you only have 3 wyverns to pull. It's a bit of a pain in the butt to do that though, since they have a very low "give a damn" radius, and if you get too far away, they'll turn aside and start flying out of your quad. It can be hard to balance staying close enough to keep their attention with being far enough to get off your nuke without catching AOE.

I was in Cobalt Scar last night (41 wizard) with some friends (upper 50's) being powerleveled as they farmed for their tradeskills. I was hit several times by drakes ( I had not seen these before and was unaware of what they did). The most I was hit for was about 500 damage. One almost killed me, (he hit me twice)but luckily the druid i was with saved my butt and attracted the aggro.

I was soloing this dark blue mob when my druid was lvl 47. Ensnare to attract it's attention, followed by a root. Stack Drifting Death, Drones of Doom and Stinging Swarm on it - adding Creeping Crud if you want. Sit back out out its casting range and allow to cook for a couple of minutes, reapplying dots as required. Screech!...dead drake. One dropped Circle of Wakening Lands for me tonight - pity i already had it.

These are easy and profitable for a 51 Necro with an augmented pet...
Stay well back from the mob, and stay perpendicular to it's path, and hit pet attack. Walk toward it until pet starts to run toward the drake (I use it as a range indicator) and hit Dooming Darkness. By the time dooming lands, pet will have taken the AE by himself, and you will have time to fear it with no risk of taking the AE, and the 49 pet with it's stun proc will hold off any attempt at casting the AE. Now BoD, and med until it dies or fear breaks, recast as needed. No harder than a Wyvern if you prepare a bit.

just wanted to add that i looted boon of the gorou off a regular old drake.
From the only paladin in CS soloing drakes for their nice pp, and vendor gems 42pp each, and quest gems (standard 250pp each). I solod a few levels here... and even dinged 57 here. I have made over 10k just off 2 bags of velious armor quest gems.. and now looking for another guild to buy my other 2 bags of quest gems. The drakes are the only ones wroth fighting now at these levels, rarely some are still blue, 90% are baby blues. Drop spells and gems/quest gems. Run to otters to sell them, or to Skyshrines vendor areas.

I don't think it is stupid to sit by the portal and get hit by the 500 AOE spell if you don't know any better. If you do know better then that is stupid.

This happened to me my 6th time porting there while picking someone up that was giving me C3. I got hit but I ain't stupid. I learned from that. Never again. Kids need to lighten up before calling others stupid. I would open hand slap anyone who called me stupid to my face, so don't hide behind a website and dish out BS that you would never say to anyone's face.

BTW the drakes are dubious to me. Wondering if I should kill them if it will drop to KOS. I'm thinking it will stay dub but then again never hunted in this zone.

My 46 druid looted elemental maelstrom off a drake tonight. Alot of other spell drops I have read or heard about were all 50+. Does the players level affect what level spells they drop? Also I looted a chipped onyx saphirre and a flawed chrysolite, is the chrysolite vendor fodder or for a quest?

Like the subject says, these guys are cake. I wish I had been out here at 47 and 48 instead of quadding dwarves. The going rate for the hides on Karana is about 200pp. A 44+ druid can easily kill them, just be careful of where you fight, and whatever you do, DON'T let them get close. I haven't died yet at 49 and 50, but I've been awfully close quite a few times. I have 2 dots, grasping roots, ensnare, and 4 buff spells loaded at all times. The extra buff spells are necessary to try to prevent myself from losing sow. btw, they are sow, str, SLN, and resist cold, for obvious reasons. The aoe is 500 max, and maxes quite often without decent saves vs cold. If you want to get exp on something out here with melees, go for wyverns. Drakes must be root dotted or chain fear kited, which is quite mana draining itself. I only have ever seen one drake tanked, and that was 4 pallies that chain stunned... oh what 4 pallies, a druid, and a shaman can do to mobs... makes you sick

I agree totally. Any class with fear can also take these guys no problem solo. I am an SK and pull with cascading darkness and fear from a distance. I would recomend refreshing the fear long before it wears off because you do not want them to turn around. They due to dispell and like everyone else has said their area effect is nasty.

Also, it is a lot of fun when you get a chanter to charm one of these guys. You should see how fast they take down a wyverns.

Being I ranger I wish they were then I could fear kite them myself. They should be animals. I don't see a difference in them and the Tundra Kodiaks or, dire or drakkel wolves who are animals. Well maybe one day a flying creature will be considered an animal.

I agree with the other posters to a point... The warrior and monk would be toast. I soloed one earlier tonight with 40m just to see if i could. I had no trouble as a lvl 45 druid with 194 wis. Snared, calfaction, burn then root (using my Tunare Warden medallion mana free root) and DOT. It took 3 drifting deaths and I did have to med for the last 2. The AOE is nasty and it hits at more than melee range. If you keep the drake at max distance there's no danger.

Killing Drakes
# Aug 03 2001 at 1:52 PM Rating: Decent
15 posts
OK, unless you're after hides, the Drakes aren't very good game (lvl 44 spell drops, though, seem to be a common occurance). Gem drops seem to be exactly the same as Wyverns.

At lvl 53, about 50% of them turn green. I first started hunting them at 51, but only when the zone is packed full of Druids, Wizzys and Necros and not a Wyvern to be found. If you know what you're doing, Drakes are very easy to kill.

Pull with snare, and cast it from the farthest distance away as possible. Immediatly root and dot. The important thing to remember here is to KEEP YOUR DISTANCE! If you stay near the fringes of your spellcasting range, they cannot cast their AE spells on you. Only when you come relatively close will you get hit, but if they're snared, it's fairly easy to stay beyond their spell casting range. Also, don't worry if snare is resisted the first cast, these things seem to be even slower then unsnared Wyverns. If you do get hit, cold resists help a lot. Unbuffed cr hovers around 56 for me and I get hit for max with these stats. However, buffed up to about 100 cr, I've never been hit for more then 200. Again, the trick is to KEEP YOUR DISTANCE!

Also, out of kindness to fellow players...pulling these things to the beaches to hunt is very bad. The Drakes will cast their ae to any CoV KOS person who happens to wander too close, especially if the Drakes are rooted. The Drakes and Wyverns are spaced enough on the ledge where you can kite them there without the worries of adds. Just make sure you stay center ledge to avoid entering into any Wyvern's aggro range. Also, watch for any PC(s) pulling Wyverns accros the ledge near you! Hope this helps. Happy hunting!

Cobolts hit for bout 300ish ae tops that I have seen. They have never dispelled me. They dont cast Ice comet. they do hae large radius AE cold spell. They have roughly 3500hp or so. You can root and snare or vice versa then dot or whatever. They are very easy to kite or root and dot. You could even do with a stunner and a strong melee and a healer np

Change to Cobalt Drakes
# May 17 2001 at 2:29 PM Rating: Default
This was my first time in the zone, so I'm not sure what they were like before. On test server, the Drakes now no longer proc the AE Dmg and Dispell.

You would think this is a good thing, but NO! Verant has come up with an entirely new evil scheme. They now proc an AE Stun spell. Not only that, but they literally proc the spell every 2 seconds, and at level 51 I never resisted a single one. Impossible to run, and no time to cast, if you are aggroed by one of these now, you are just dead, plain and simple.

/agree Aluinae

Total BS. Might as well give each cobalt drake an AOE death touch ability. Their AOE poison based stun hits just about every 2 seconds, and the effect last 1.987 seconds. You get about a half step or a swing every other one. Probably the only way to escape would be MAYBE a divine aura or FD ability, but i doubt even that would get you away.

Last night my group of 49 warrior (me), 47 SK, 45 Pally, 43 necro were trying to get our keys. 1 drake aggro, goodbye. None of us could do a THING. I probably made it 5 steps in the time it took this drake to wipe out the rest of the group, then me. I didnt get a single resist (poison resist only 43, but cmon, i was stunned probably 50-60 times before i died)

What a great idea from the guys at Verant. This will really encourage people to get out and explore all the new terrain. Its like the bad old days of "you fall in a pit, you're dead" games on commodore 64.

First off...aye, dont hang out at the portal, even if you are not KOS, someone will and agro the drakes, and catch you in the AE.

When drake(s) agro in CS, if you are not prepared to fight them, there is a recourse. If levi/dmf/safe fall is still up, or you can take the 250-300dmg for the fall to the beach. HEad to the beach where the Othmirs are. Immediately ooc/shout DRAKES TO OTHMIRS! (if you are NOT going to give warning, please stop reading and just die in place)

Run through and just past the othmir camp to the waters edge. If you have an invun shield, throw it up quickly, if not you'll take one more AE hit. The AE has a LARGE radius. When the drake AEs again, all the Othmirs of that camp will agro on it. They will kill it, tho it will take a few moments...so as soon as its AE goes off...begin running away from the othmir camp, to escape the lastAE it might get off.

And once again...please ooc/shout DRAKES TO OTHMIRS (or the like). Give ppl warning. Those without good resists/HPs may die, or you'll agro pets.

If you can kill them but need a moment...train the the far end of the beach, furthest from Skyshrine. It's relatively othmir free...and player too. Still give a warning tho please. There should be room there to root/dot, kite the drakes without getting KSed by othmirs, and without ruining other ppls' day. =-)

Good hunting and safe travels.

A warning to any that feel safe around the Cobalt Scar teleport circle:

Due to the nasty AE on these drakes, you can easily be killed if someone who is NOT on friendly terms with them comes near you. A friend and I were sitting near the teleport circle discussing plans for the evening, when another druid teleported in. He was immediately aggroed by a drake which used it's AE. I thought someone had cast on us, and looked around for the PK. We restored the buffs the AE had dispelled and healed. Then the druid teleported in again, and two drakes blasted this rather foolish halfling, catching us in the AE. We had even moved out much further from the opening, but the druid ran out of the circle before aggroing the two drakes. My friend died, and I barely managed to stay alive, probably due to my high CR at the time. It took us a little while to figure out what had happened, but we finally figured it out from watching this rather insipid druid get himself killed again.

Dude, it's not very wise to be sitting around the circle for the very reason you mention. I am kos by the drakes so there is a chance I will be agroed on when I zone in. I can either not hunt in cobalt scar or risk the possibility the drakes will be near the circle when I zone. The exp is very good in cobalt scar (2 bubbles in one morning), so I take the chance. Just this morning I zoned in and two drakes jumped me. One was a named one it seems. When I'm attacked zoning in, I try to outrun them to give me time to gate. Usually this works, however this time a second joined in and stunned me, it was over.

It's just plain stupid though to be sitting at the druid ring. Safest place would be near the otter people on the beach.

Well, offhand I'd say that porting into a location where you are KOS to the local mobs and where some of those mobs use AoE type attacks, and where other people who are not KOS use to port into the zone, well, that's a wee bit less than brilliant and certainly qualifies as somewhat inconsiderate, to say the least.

I would suggest druids and wizards get their faction with Claws of Veeshan up to at least dubious before using the portal ring in Cobalt Scar. You'll need to do that to use the portal in Wakening Land anyway, what with Wuoshi generally camping the portal ring there whenever he's up.

AoE is a bitch - does about 500 damage AND has a chance to dispell one of you buffs. It's not a spell so you can't mana sieve them away, its a proc like the dry bone skeleton's fire.

Sitting with my usual 110 cold resist (unbuffed and not in pvp gear) one did about 1/2 - 1 bub damage to me...which is nasty

Killing these kills your Claws of Veeshan faction? And, do they drop eggs?

Verant has acknowledged accidentally giving these drake's Lady Vox's AE ice spell, and not ice comet (IC isn't AOE :P) It's going to be taken care of in a future patch. But till then, that's one helluva bug, lol.
Ice Comet

Invisiblity dropped just outside the Dragon Circle and got aggro'd by one of these. Hit me for 300 plus points in a couple seconds but I thought no problem. Started casting snare and before I could get it off and was nailed with a Ice Comet. Loading.....Please wait. They do cast Ice Comet so be very careful around these guys.

I hear people all the time saying their AoE hits half the zone or all the zone.. that's not correct. The radius HUGE for sure, but certainly not half the zone. It not only does about 600 points of damage but also dispels your buffs. Whee have fun.

The AOE of the cobalt Drakes is a 400 point DD with an insane radius AND it will dispell up to 3 buffs with each shot. If you dont believe me tell that to my party paladin who took 700 damage from falling after lev got the dispel :-P

yes i have been fighting these nasty buggers many times trick is to stun them air pet is great here, and the drake does dispell buffs its random and up to 3 buffs can be dispelled sows shields skins lev can be any or none . casters must stay out range of aoe or will die lava bolt is good for this has long range, i can cast from far away and only take min dam from aoe i bub max 220 hp for me , clerics move in to heal and stun move out fast that aoe is nasty close up u will take 500 pts plus dam if u are close. these almost allways drop gems of some kind, and good xp. hope this helps <have evac ready > good hunting

The Ottmirs are enemies to the drakes, so if you aggro a drake you don't want or can't take, jump down to the ottmir camp and let them kill it. It goes fairly fast, as the drake has few hitpoints.

Not neccissarily. The Othmir WILL NOT agro a cobalt drake until it casts it's AE and they get hit by it.

The cobalt drake's ae spell dispells 1-2 spells and it casts a 600 point AE which covers about half the zone, if you suddenly lose 600 hp you know why, if the ae hits the otters they will attack the drake, if you are pulling these please give a shout out to the zone some of us can barely take 2 of these AE before we die.

Otters no longer attack when hit by the AoE. This has been "fixed."

And the half-zone wide aoe radius is a big exaduration. When I first went there I was scared out of my mind whenever I saw one because I had read posts like these. The AoE is a lot smaller than half the zone. If there is a drake casting it at the middle otter camp, and you are at the one to the left of it (facing the sea) you do not get hit. this is about 1/3 to 1/4 of the zone. Still pretty big, but not so big that you can't run a short distance to save yourself before they cast again.
