Kill everything

Behind the sleepers tomb there is a snowhill of sorts, setup shop on top of it and kill everything that spawns behind it (with your back to sleepers tomb) lots of roamers will spawn, giants, cougars, rhinos, mammoth, snowbunnies, manticores and then the snowgriffins will spawn, I dont think that just the manticores or bunnies are PH's, I think all of the above are as we had +8 snow griffins spawning almost at the same time and we only killed like 2 snowbunnies and 3 manticores, lots of others though, which is good as some things that drop is needed for the questchain.

My small entourage of friends got me 4 eggs within 1 hour of constant killing.

Had some trouble finding the Snow Griffons. When I got to the zone, I ran all the way around and through the middle tracking. There were NO Snow Griffons in zone. I read Clapman the Vile's post below. I did as he said, and killed everything north and west of Sleeper's Tomb.

It was like magic. For every Manticore killed, mere seconds later, a Snow Griffon would spawn. I was constantly killing everything, but that seemed to have little effect. Killing the Manticores clearly spawned the Snow Griffons.

Confirmed this today. Kill everything that moves north and west of Sleepers - particularly manticores - and you should see plenty of snow griffons.

Why is this the hotzone...imo so players would venture to this place and seek out places they hardly go. Best hunting in EW is Orcs. Then Frost giants (ltb at 46 ish lol). I hate Orcs anyway but they are best exp at 45 i think ! Good Luck out there ! Looking for Griffons myself and none on track near Sleeprs /shrug ./open eyes more ! lol
My Experience
# Jun 01 2006 at 2:58 PM Rating: Decent
i'd say sleeper tomb is a good area for the griffons, and north west from there i killed manticores, and griffons would spawn shortly after even at night. I did not kill the giants or the mammoths, only snow bunnies in that area. An Elder spawned in that general area as well.
I killed around 6 griffons before i got my first egg also. I failed on my first attempt on combine so this time i went, and got plenty of items for next try & my baking higher at 178.

I collected many bunny meat, and tundra kodiak meat, also manitcor manes for next shall.

Btw the manicores seem to have alot of HPS and the manes are pretty common.

Where to find Snow Griffin Eggs

The secret is to circle between Kael Drakkal entrance, the huts with Icefang in the South and Sleeper's Tomb entrance. Keep killing Rhinos, Mammoths and Manticores, and Snow Griffins will spawn in that area. I didn't touch a single giant, but they may be placeholders, too...

Take care and GL.
Spawn Spot Seen
# Nov 16 2004 at 3:14 AM Rating: Decent
Spent weeks looking for them, finally found a place where they spawn, right at sleeper's tomb. The exact spot is under the tree with one of those no srop stones lying by it. Don't have the loc but you can find it. At one point there were three griffins at once! Got my 4 eggs in 1 hour. Go grouped though, it is a busy area with a lot of giants, manticores, and those frost bunnies (they aren't ordinary rodents). Use the holy hand-grenade and don't fail the combine!
PH denied.
# Jun 14 2004 at 6:52 PM Rating: Decent
Manticores are NOT the PH for griffins. I killed over 40 manticores and not 1 griffin spawned. There is no rhyme or reason other then I really really hate this area now after being camped here for 7hours and 3 eggs found... last one just wont come..
Bunnys & Eggs
# May 19 2004 at 7:19 AM Rating: Decent
I was doing the Shawl quest & was at the part of Egg Hunting. What I learned was Snow griffins spawn all over the zone not just the South-East part of the zone. You don't have to run around killing everything that moves, just Snow Bunnys. Well not tottaly true. Once the Snow Bunny place holders are dead a Manticore can spawn in place of a griffin, so you should kill them too. If your not a tracker to begin with, bring one.
Griffins made easy

Well, been spending a lot of time in EW lately. Doing ring quests for my warrior and Bard. (Heh messed up the war and a turn in, so on my 4th time) And, I've had about 7 eggs drop. Always do an /ooc that it's rotting and give a loc. But, for all you egg hunters, this might be helpful.

I've been killing mostly Kodiaks and Cougars near the IC bridge. And have seen as many as 4 Snow Griffins on track (Bard track mind you, which is about an area as big as the Nexus) at one time.

Never killed them unless they agroed. Which they did a lot.

So, go kill the cats and bears in EW, and let people know when the HQ pelts are rotting (Used for the ring quest) Basically, I think anything in EW that wanders is a griffin PHEr. When I hunter eggs I killed the mammoths exclusively and had a lot of griffins pop. Hope this helps

Balauk 65 warrior
Wilburn 62 cleric
Tariyn 57 bard
and a buncha others

Posted this on the griffin eggs also. heh Figured some might look here too.
Location of possible spawn point
# May 06 2004 at 10:38 PM Rating: Decent
Ok I think I found a spot were the Griffin spawns. Its the 3rd one that spawns at the exact same spot. Loc is about -7448 -3700 234. It stays there for about 30 sec then it headed NW.

Hope that helps. I don’t have the exact spawn rate tough.
Wasn't to hard

Just killed Tundra mammoths on the south side. Griffs started popping like crazy.
Just like a cop...never there when you need them!

As a pre level 46 Ranger there was no efficient way for me to fight these things. I used far too much Mana trying to nuke them because I did not want to shell out good money to buy magic arrows. I spent my time gathering other items for future Prayer Shaw quest and finally collecting on some sellable loot from the Rygorr and Ulthork. I even got my Manticor Main on my first and only Manticor kill, thank god. Those are really tough for there level! Finally after making lever 46 I can use my Tolan’s Darkwood Bracers and summon magic arrows. WooHoo…. Now when I find one of these Snow Griffins I make sure I am at least 90% and full of Mana and then I just hit them like this.
Cancel magic….pluck…..pluck…..
Snare……pluck…..pluck……
Swarm of Pain……Pluck…….Pluck……..
Stinging Swarm……..Pluck……..Pluck……
Root…..Pluck…….Pluck…….
Burning Arrow….Pluck……Pluck
Flaming Arrow….Pluck……Pluck……..
Swarm of Pain or Burning Arrow (again)…..Pluck……Pluck……
(Root breaks) Pluck……..Pluck…….Pluck…….(The death turn)
Smack……Smack……Kick……Smack…..Smack……LOOT.

I just kite them like this back to an open area or to the coast and although I have only killed 6 now it seems to work really well with no down time, except looking for another one. I have only been hit with Stinging Swarm a hand full of times and it doesn’t do much to me anymore. Have also been hit with Root a couple of times but it immediately breaks.

Some of my stats:
My Dex is just over 200, Magic Resist just over 75, 31% Haste, Twisted Longbow and summoned Arrows, Swift blade of Zek and a Gomdurig.

I carry a couple of Leatherfoot Haversacks full of extra equipment to swap out for just about any occasion. My Ranger has soloed to this point so not sure how my equipment compares. I have twinked the **** out of him, I think.

As a pre 46 Ranger when I spotted a Snow Griff I would follow them and plot their routes on my map. At one point a spotted 4 of them all in same viewable window together before they all turned and went on to there next plot point. Now that I am killing them I can’t find the damn things! Now I feel the pain I have been reading about from all you guys before me! Going to try killing the Manticors as I read below, 50% chance of spawning another Snow Griff.

I have found that the Coldain Camp near the Rygorr Fort and the one just south of the Bridge seem to be good spots to track from. Most of my plots show the Snow Griffs traveling by one of these two camps.

Happy hunting!!!

Oh yeah out of 6 Snow Griff's only 1 Egg. : ( If I can get 4 by the time I hit 47 hunting these things I will be happy!

(Update)
Hey, I'll be damned they are listed as animals. Boy this changed my method big time. Now it is:

Cancel Magic, Plunk......Plunk......
Snare, Plunk......Plunk......
Swarm of pain, Plunk......Plunk......
Fear kite, Bash.....Bash.....Bash......
Fear Kite, Bash.....Bash.....Bash......
and sometimes one more fear kite is needed to finish them off.

This method saves lots of Mana and Down time. Now only 2.5 yellows into my level 46 I got my 4th egg and finished the 3rd Prayer Shaw quest. Out of 19 Snow Grifs killed I got 9 tallons, 3 feathers, 4 eggs, 3 runes and one writ page 174.
This data is very random as I logged on any time day or night of any day of the week and it was not 19 kills in a row.

It seems of the two groups of SG's, the ones north/central near the Ry'gorr fort and the ones south near the Coldain Camp, I got 3 of my 4 eggs from SG's in the north/central group.

I do belive there is a link with the Manticores. Many times when there were no SG's I would kill a Manticore or two and another SG would pop. Once I ran around for about 1.5 hour and no SG's. I started tracking Manticores and after my first Manticore kill a griff popped close behind me. It may be meaningless but it happend almost every time I tried it.

Don't ask me how, or why, but I was hunting Griffins for eggs near Sleeper's Tomb entrance...specifically in the valley to the NW of it. I literally saw 5 Griffins all up at once...after killing 2 of them, 3 more popped...giving us a grand total of 6 to kill. In addition to these, there were 4 or 5 Manticores roaming with them...After all were killed, more spawned, but by that time, we had looted 4 total eggs. Then the druid took off cuz he got his last egg, leaving me stranded to solo on my LP. Oh well, gonna keep keelin =o)

Well I went three hours and killed every bunny and manticor i could find and no Griffin. Then I spotted a Manticore on track that conned dk blue to me at 58, as soon as I droped him a Griff poped. The suckage is that another druid nabbed him before I could

Dropped Rune of Paralysis in EW. They are pretty easy to solo even though they do cast root and fire spells.

I camped these for a good 3 hours at the plateu thing im a Beastlord so i didnt have the luxury of track so i just ran around killing stuff well i got TWO eggs in 3 hours and said ***** this and was on my wayt o zone out i get 2 griftons on the way kill em both dropped eggs
Spawn Locations
# Jun 12 2003 at 9:33 AM Rating: Good
There is a large plateau around area neg 7,000 neg 1,400. There are a number of spawn points for Snow Griffins and the Elder Snow Griffins surrounding the plataeu.

I sat there with a druid for 4 hours (to get 4 eggs) keeping an eye on track and killing wanderers whilst the Griffins were not up. Get them quick before they head off at SOW speed away from the area. Spawn times seemed very random. I could not link killing any particular wanderering creature with the Griffin spawns themselves in any way.

On average it seemed to me there was a spawn about every 10 mins although sometimes 2 or 3 would spawn at the same time. Egg drops were rare (about 1 in 10 is my guess) and I never got 2 off of one mob.

Just got Vel expansion loaded. Went to Eastern Wastes to look around. See a Snow Grif on track. Coned it and think to myself "I'm a druid no problem" well start to kite it around when he was down to last bulb of Health another Grif aggroed me. Well I got a KEI and wis at 255 kited him around so still had enough mana. Both dead went to loot all I got of both kills is 4 Eggs... Destroyed them thinking they were a waste..Should have read here first

Ok I've read the PH thing and have an idea what I should kill to "force" these things to spawn.

My question is, is there a specific location that I should go to kill the Place Holders. I'm currently clearing the Manticor's South of the Ry'gorr fort and the Bunnies to the North. I can't say what my results were cause a Druid was gobbling up all the snow grif's as they popped (at least I think she was).

The only other location that I can think of for Manticor's is by the GD zone/Giant fort area. To be honest though I've never seen a Grif here.

Any help would be appreciated.

My preferred spot is halfway between Sleeper's Tomb and the Coldain huts to the west (where Icefang is). Loc neg 7600, pos 1800. I setup shop there, and kill anything within visible range.

As a result I see 2-6 griffs per hour.

If needed, you can pull to the south coastline to kite stuff from there.

I've been doing them for the last few days, and from what I've seen, bunnies do not spawn Griffins (or at least if they do it's random or a long timer). The Manticors, however, never fail to spawn a Snow Griffin. The spawn timer is about 1 or 2 minutes from when the Manticor dies. From what I could tell the spawn point of the Griffins was totally random, though confined to a certain area. The area was near a fort of some sort. I'm not familiar with the zone or I'd elaborate on which fort it was. I had a ranger with me so it was no problem.
