I soloed him last night at lvl 52 beast and took me down to 20m I had to keep him doted, slowed 30% and weak. and keep pet healed wile I med and watch. but was a fun... =) my wis is at 176 so that did help alot too..

Dropped in 45 seconds
# Jun 08 2002 at 5:17 PM Rating: Default
47 Rogue, 46 Warrior, 51 Mage, 50 Druid, 46 Druid... put him down in 45 seconds. That's no astounding feat, for sure. But, if you're gonna go do a job... make sure you do it right.

Warrior pulled off of crag hill down near the houses where it was flat. Warrior and Rogue meleed him for about 15 seconds, then he was slowed and dotted (the druid actually got aggro for 10 seconds because of dotting too soon). The warrior took 80% of the shots and still had 40% of his HPs left.

This guy hits for 80-110. Either he has some form of regen or he has about twice as many hitpoints as a normal giant. We didn't stop attacking him to determine which. ;-)

I believe his respawn rate is under 15 minutes (the mage whom we were helping said it was an 8 minute timer). Bottom Line: Don't waste your time on a risky solo attempt. Bring in some buddies for a short battle and get it done right.
Just hope he doesn't resist

I am a 49 necro and I like to do risky but stupid things sometimes, and soloing this guy was one of them, as I was sick of killing spiders to get tailoring up. Don't let the description here fool you, this guy is NOT a rare spawn, he is up almost every time i go to EK. The first time i tried fighting him, I darknessed him, then feared, dotted a few times and repeated that while pet beat on him. It took a while but Tarbul died. Now the next 2 or 3 times i tried fighting him, my darkness spell was resisted, and unlike the lucky necro a few posts below, I did not have Jboots or sow. Once this guy was on me, pet could not taunt him off for the life of me. Oh, and feign death doesn't work too well either. The max he hits for is about 107 or so, but he hits pretty darn fast, much too fast for a caster to cast a spell without being interrupted.

Bard gives up...
# Mar 11 2002 at 11:22 PM Rating: Good
I (a 51 bard) was running a newbue to HH for some spells when I saw him (blue) on track.

I figured I'd give it a shot.

Tried DoTing Cold and Magic with Drums of the Beast (100 per pulse) for a few minutes but he showed ZERO damage.

Then went to Fear Kiting with FBSS, Lute of the Howler illusion up, and Di'Zok Wristsnapper (10 dmg, 18 dly) and flameweaver for a few minutes but he showed ZERO damage.

Bard gave up and zoned.

Was hunting spiders for silks (tailoring, is, like, soooo cool) when Tarbul popped on MY mountain. Well, this put a crimp in my activities, to say the least, so I decided to roll up my sleeves, hike up my robe (for running away) and show this punkass what was what. Sent in Koner, darknessed, etc. Thought I might take him, but resisted that "crucial" spell (don't act like it's never happened to YOU) and had to zone (barely, I might add). Came back in, got mana back and thought, "oh, well." But then I started thinking about it and got myself worked up. Brought in reinforcements (Jebeker), killed everything that was in my way whilst looking for him (venting rage, so to speak) and engaged Tarbul for Round 2! This time, I altered my tactics a bit, and he finally went down!! With no mana and a bub of health to spare. Small victory for the world, I know, but damn satisfying to me...Zonkey Wranglers rock yer lame ***!!!

Solo 53 necro
# Mar 02 2002 at 8:05 PM Rating: Decent
As a lvl 53 necro, he is very solo'able (if you have jboots). His full health run speed is equal to that of jboots. I proved that when snare didn't stick and I ended up running laps around the mountain until my pet was able to taunt him off of me (30 laps or so, it was a LONG time :-). Anyway, after that, dooming/fear/splurt and let the pet do his job. Once at half health, he's slow enough to open up some distance and root if fear/snare break at a bad time (which happened too). Both "close" encounters I had with him, I started at 3m. The exp isn't worth the risk, but it's something to do when trying to get silks for the darn shawl quests. :-)

Had a run-in with this guy tonight, was farming silks and pelts and HG toes in EK when I saw him striding the Earth... he was blue, so I sicced my L49 pet on him and started to root/DOT. Landed two 1000HP DOTs on him, and by the time they wore off he'd killed my pet and I'd only wounded him down to the 2nd 'e' in his last name! 10K HP is about accurate I think. I could see I wasnt gonna take him so i ran off to med, and a minute later he'd found me and was at Full health! I had no trouble at all running away from him with my SOW.

Had a group of 30-40s on our way through EK when someone had the bright idea to take him on. A bard (47) , paladin (32) , ranger (39) , druid (30) and SK (46) . He resisted several of the roots, most of the dots and barely took 20% dmg before we turned tail and ran. By the time we had healed ourselves he was back to 100%. We decided to move on.

I have heard people boast about solo and duoing him with lvl 55+ chars. Although, I have never actually seem someone accomplish this.

I shall return when my mage is older :)

Last night a friend and I did duo him.

Lvl56 Ranger with Swiftwind, and lvl51 Druidess with KEI.

Druidess kept him DoTed to negate the regen, and I slapped him around for a little while till he died. Druidess was nice enough to bandaid me as well :-)

Short fight, only a minute or two.

my experience with him
# Feb 17 2002 at 9:20 AM Rating: Default
I'd guess he has 10k hp, and he regens so fast that drifting death dealt absolutely no damage to him. I'd guess around 30-50 hp regen a tick. My ice and starfire landed somewhat consistently. My advice for mages is to use a water, fire, or air pet, sow boots/potions, and whatever spell you have that causes the most aggro. Malo-line I think is a good one. That or get a few friends to go out there with you and help you smoke him, he's not bad if you've got enough people to kill him fast enough. The regen is a pain though, like I said, I dealt absolutely zero damage to him with drifting death, but I could straight kite him fairly well, he just had too many HPs for me to take solo.
He Good for Archery!!
# Feb 03 2002 at 3:12 AM Rating: Good
as a lvl 50 ranger i was able to land snare with ease. i then shot him with the 20 arrows i had then zoned. figuring i lvled archery up 2 points in such a short time i zoned out and summoned 300 arrows (i love tolan's bracer). i then went in and shot his @$$ with all the arrows i had and in about 20min, i had gotten my archery up an additional 32 points. i recommend all rangers do this :)

Like all Hill Giants he is capable of triple hitting for 3 x 90 damage. Unlike normal HG however, he cannot be rooted for any length of time. The longest I managed to get Ensnaring Roots to stick for was about 9 seconds, on average it broke after 3 seconds.

Snare will almost always land and does last full duration. As multani said, this guy is awesome for increasing Archery, which is normally a slow skill to raise. Pumped 500 arrows into him for a reasonable raise of 81 to 106.

The nearest fletching store is, I believe, in WK, south of Chief Goonda.

A group was killing Tarbul repeatedly one day while I was hunting crags. Watching Tarbul rise in the air like a balloon and smash down again as someone cast their gravity flux or invert gravity on this giant was hilarious. I must admit to a bit of vindictive glee since Tarbul has pounded me into the ground in the past.

And to those who let mages loot Rain of Karana off this guy, THANK YOU!

I love to kite... so here's my idea if you dont have any cleric frineds p. Get sowed ( alt jboots ). Ask some sk or neckro to join ya..Now let them *snare*( darkness line) the mob and throw a Disease clod. ( stops regen ) Happy hunting..cuz someone is going to be very very pissed at the evil little sk / nec at your side

Regen Taunts !

Disease cloud does NOT Stop regen, it lowers it by approximately 2 points. The misconception here is that it stops the regen on low level mobs, because they only regen 1-2 hp/tick, which stops it on them. On extremely regenerative mobs such as this one, it will make no noticable difference.

Does anyone else find it funny that person who took the above picture was obviously tracking Tarbul Earthstrider as evidenced by the 'Tarbul Earthstrider is straight ahead' line and yet appently this druid/ranger had Jboots as eveidenced buy the 'your feet move faster' line.

Do other classes than Druids/Rangers track? Is there another explatination to 'You feet move faster' than Jboots?

The person who took the screenshot is a bard. Their song gives the message "Your feet move faster" as I recall, and yes they can track.

Ahhhh thanks that was really bugging me. The things we can learn simpley by asking.
Taking him down, mage style.
# Aug 20 2001 at 6:26 PM Rating: Default
Get some Jboots, or some sow potions. Malosi him. He will aggro on you, run as far ahead as possible, and then lavabolt. Run ahead again, but this time send in the 53 air pet (earth pet sucks for this). He will keep aggro on you for a very, very long time for some reason. The stuns from air pet will keep him from catching up (he is slow anyway..hehe) but it is good enough to re-cast lavabolt if he aggros pet. Took me about 20 minutes of running around and letting pet tank to finally take him down. Irritatingly long to say the least. But I do got my rain!
Chain casting

I killed Tarbul at 55. It took me 7 lvl 51 earth pets using a DS only. He does have a ton of HP.

Now THAT, Bemidian, is one of the most useful posts on this board. It's very reassuring to hear that chaincasting pets with DS can outdamage Tarbul's regen.
I was worried about this, so thank you! Now all I got to do is find him :)
Took a shot solo.
# Aug 19 2001 at 10:28 PM Rating: Excellent
Took a quick try at him solo today. Didn't know about the regen - now it makes sense. Managed to Instill Doubt him 3 times out of 5 attempts - he runs slow and I was able to beat his *** (Jade Mace/Fist/FBSS) quite a bit. But, after a while I had burned Stone Stance, Mend, and was at half health, and he was down maybe 20% tops. Feigned out, let him leave, and figured I'd try another day with a healer/snarer at my back.
Taking this guy out.
# Aug 19 2001 at 8:51 AM Rating: Decent
Watched a group take this guy out last night. Level 43 shaman, 46 druid, 44 chanter. Chanter pulled him with Tashania, Shaman dropped a Malisement, and druid Snared. Chanter was closest so Tarbie aggroed on her, smacked her, and got a pet on him for his troubles. The druid then hit him with Drifting Death and what I think was Calefaction. Could be wrong on that one. Shaman unleased a barrage of Venom of the Snake, Scourge, and 2 other spells which I did not recognize, could have been other dots..and then sicced Fluffy on him. While this was happening chanter was casting fear. I, at this point, sent Jobekn in to save the day (lv 24 water pet). For the rest of the fight, which lasted not long at all, druid and shaman nuked full out, re-dotting as necessary, while chanter reapplied fear as needed. No pets died, chanter had her runes knocked off I believe, maybe a little damage carryover, but nothing noticable. So now I've got this Rain thing hanging out in my bank vault taking up space till I hit 50.. Nothing wrong with that.

A magician can solo this guy with some care, and a stream of 51 earth pets. He doesn't summon, but will still be a bit of a challenge for a 51+ mage. The trick is not to try to nuke. He's got too many hps for that. You want to save your mana for pets. I think it took me 10 51 earth pets, and was fun for the challenge. Kudos to Verant for not making this guy a summoning mob. Gives us a chance to be a mage while doing our epic, not a tracker again.
How a ranger/druid duo can take down tarbul
# Aug 18 2001 at 1:07 AM Rating: Decent
First off, ranger must have jolt. This is a lvl 51 spell that drops the ranger to the bottom of the aggro list. The strategy is this:

Druid pulls tarbul, snares/roots him, dots him a couple times, then nukes to break root.
Tarbul is very unhappy with the druid at this time.
The ranger then comes in behind tarbul and first jolts, then starts slashing him from behind. Due to jolt's aggro reduction, there is no reason for the ranger to ever get hit. Every minute or so re-jolt and let the druid nuke here and there and tarbul WILL fall.
The druids job is to keep him annoyed, and can not leave tarbul's aggro range or the ranger is paste. The druid also can NOT root or again, tarbul will attack the nearest target.
Using this method I, a 52 ranger, and a 50 druid were able to take him down in about 10 minutes.
(this works for about any non-summoning melee mob really)

This also works very well with a Druid (or Shaman)/Rogue combo; Backstab, Evade, Repeat. Trying to find a Druid that isn't Root Happy is a task though.
