Eldrig the Old and placeholders

Here is my experience of the past few days.

First off, I parked a character at both the spawn locations listed above. I had my ranger kill every skyash drake he could find. - Nothing ever repopped.
Next, I tried killing everything in the area just west of the spawns - Nothing.

Today, I did the trick of using Highsun with my bard. - After Highsun'ing probably 30-40 mobs, I got one to warp back to its spawn location around 587, -4008. It was a skycinder drake.

Every 10-11 minutes, another one would pop at this location. Here is the mob list I went through.
a skycinder drake (the one I warped back)
a wyvern
a bottomless gnawer
a skycinder drake
a mature wurm
a skycinder drake
a mature wurm
a chromodrac
a mature wurm
a wurm
a chromodrac
Eldrig the Old (only dropped the guts for me)

So, the placeholder could be pretty much any mob in the zone. It's all a matter of luck to find the right one.

Killed the PH 75 times now and no Eldrig the Old....FYI :)
Hope this helps with Killing the Place Holder or PH
# Aug 09 2017 at 12:10 AM Rating: Decent
After camping one character at the location +570, -4020 as recommended, I then set out to kill all the Skyash Drakes I could track. Eventually the entire zone was absent of any Skyash Drake. So this told me that other things needed to be killed. So went into a free for all, of killing anything that moved. Which worked and eventually the PH appeared in front of my camped character at the location +570, -4020.

Killed the PH for a while and then Eldrig the Old appeared and died at my feet. Upon its death, I stuck around in the zone and waited for the PH to appear and then I followed it to learn the path it took.

The PH will travel all over from point to point in a straight line. While it does this, it went across one area 5 times in an hour. The area is just to the north east side of one of the fire lakes. In the general area between +1290, +355 and +816, +171.

In addition the PH will do a walk around the west side of the map, up into the North West corner along the wall and then across the north side of the wall, like several other mobs. Could also just camp at +5260, +1645 on the north wall and just wait for the PH to walk by. The PH will go past this spot twice as it makes a walk in a large hook around the west and north wall, once going clockwise in direction, then comes back to +5260, +1645 as it reverses its walk in a counter clockwise direction. Obviously the programmers wanted to make things a pain, by having the PH walk in a path avoiding the middle area for a while. You will see several other zone mobs making the same path, kill them all. Could just walk the wall from +5260, +1645 in a counter clockwise direction, killing all and may get lucky if it is on this 30 plus minute walk avoiding the middle.

While camping the PH spot the following mods spawned as place holders;
a mature wurm
a old wurm
a wurm
a Skycinder
a Chromadrac
a Wyvern

While I was killing at the camp spot +570, -4020, it never once appeared as a Skyash drake, but would not say it does not, as this is Everquest.

I parked some box characters at loc +570, -4020 (north of the OT ramp), then went around with another character mass-killing mobs primarily in the Eastern and Southern part of the zone until "a chromadrac" popped at the camp. You can also do the Highsun (Bard song that force-Gates a mob) method, but due to its low range, and particular my Bard's low Wind skill, it was easier for me to run around sniping mobs with my high-level Ranger instead. I dare say the latter method is really the easiest. Almost all mobs in Skyfire are KoS and will attack even a level 100 character, so your characters at the camp will get aggro. Just remove all damage shields so you don't accidentially kill and poof the corpse while you're running around sniping.

For statistical purposes, I stayed there for a while, here is the data:

PH respawn time: 10 min 40 secs
Total mobs: 68
Total Eldrig spawns: 5
The Gut is a 100% drop rate

So like many other Bards before me, I decided to finally try and get my 1.0 epic, because I wanna own one for collection.

One thing to note, this can be pretty frustrating to do solo, so my advice is either do with a box or a friend. What you want to do is have the box/friend to camp right at the bottom ramp of the OT zone tunnel, while the bard go around with Song of Highsun memmed. Initially I was running around like a headless chicken randomly Highsunning mobs. Just when I was about to give up, one of the posters here below mentioned something about pathing (thank you, you saved my life).

So I did abit more searching around and figured out a way to do it. I had the bard camp around loc -500, -1900. What I did was basically just Highsunning everything that came along close to this spot, because word has it that this spot is part of the path of Eldrig/PH. Your friend/box basically just needs to keep a close eye on anything that jumps on him/her. Because nothing passes by that OT ramp spot except for Eldrig/PH. However when you encounter the mob there, don't kill it right away.

Instead, have your Bard quickly load Selo's and run back to the OT ramp and then, open your Tracking skill and get the mob in your tracks. Once done, use Highsun on it and follow it back to its spawn point via track. When you run into it, keep repeating Highsun until you can physically see it spawning at its spawn point. Then take down the mob and voila, you're on your way to camping Eldrig for the rest of the day. I believe the previous posters have mentioned that there's two possible spawn points, but just getting one of the PH should suffice.

Anyway, here's a picture of Eldrig spawning at one of the confirmed spawn points:

What a miserable camp. I'm about 10 hours in at the spawn point and no Eldrig! Cleared the zone of almost everything with help of a friend, and no PH at the second location, either. I am AFKing overnight and hoping to wake up to those guts in my bags. Terrible terrible terrible.

EDIT: 70+ PHS. Finally got the drop.

Previous posters really had this down. Set a char at the +1770, -3850 spawn point, and wander around the rest of the zone killing or Highsun'ing everything you come across. As soon as you see a mob at that spawn point, kill it and then sit back and roast marshmallows. I got very lucky, Eldrig spawned on the next pop at that spot after I dropped the PH. Good luck.

Agreed!
....After camping for nearly a week!
However, This needs to be done with a box or 2 toons; park 1 at the PH spot (I got him to spawn after the 20th+ PH) north of Overthere zoneline before you get to the wizard spire (loc listed and it's accurate); 2nd toon either Highsuns or destroys zone until the PH spawns on your toon parked at the loc. The spawn takes about 10 minutes and, like I said, it took me 20+ spawns. Nightmarish of a spawn to get!!

Ok for about a week I tried to spawn this place holder. I killed everything in the graveyard, by the volcano where Talondor spawns at the volcano. Spawned him by accident and quickly learned about him.Did get him to 21% health though with my group but his fear created alot of adds that ended us.

Killed everything by the spires south of the Overthere zone. Killed the whole eastern map.

Finally in the trench that runs to the north along the eastern wall from the Overthere zone all the way north to where the trench ends and a bunch of random tall rocks begin, I found his placeholder. There was a wurm in that area and I knew I had not seen any other mobs in the eastern trench area in the past. They were all much further west. No mobs ever walk that trench. So I killed him and began to camp/track within that area.

Go to loc 1893, -3592 and head a (2-3 seconds) selo paces north of that and face south. His place holder should spawn in front of you. I counted an 11 minute spawn cycle. If nothing spawns there then you have to kill the placeholder somewhere in the zone as the guide mentions. The placeholder could be some kind of drake, a chomodrake, or a wyvern, or wurm from what I saw spawn. Didnt think it was correct because it was further north than most guides say and the spawn cycle was shorter than 13 seconds (11 seconds), but most guides are outdated and I stuck with it. Within an hour of camping and killing placeholders Eldrig spawned. I noticed the placeholders just sit there for awhile after they spawn. I didnt wait for them to start roaming but attacked after a few seconds of spawning

When I first started camping a 63 Bard came whizzing by me and I asked if she was looking for Eldrig. She answered in the affirmative and I told her I found the placeholder and I would hold the spot for her after I got Eldrig. About an hour later I looted and showed her the spot and direction to face. About an hour later she was thinking about logging on to an alt but Eldrig popped and she got him also.

using this post info from below ... i was able to get eldrig the old to pop ... in about 40 minutes after first spawn ....

the only thing i did different was killed everything around the lake and in the lake till i got the first one to spawn ... then from there i just waited .. spawn time was about ..13 minutes .. using 550,-4085 .. it took about 4 times ....

post used :

Being a programmer and Systems Analyst I was curious about the Eldrig PH and whether it had any pattern to its movements. So after killing Eldrig I waited for the next PH (a drake) and followed it for 85 minutes. This is what I learned.

When the PH left the spawn point it traveled south to the Overthere ramp. It turned West passing just north of the rock at the bottom of the ramp. It went west for a bit, stopped for 30 seconds and then moved off on pretty much the same line. Eventually it reached a point SW of the big Lava Lake and stopped for 30ish seconds. Then it went SE. I plotted all of the movement s of this PH for 80 minutes, at which time he was tracking across the middle of the lava lake so I killed him and waited for the next PH. This one, a wurm, followed the exact same path south to the Overthere ramp and then West to point 1, from here it went a different route to the NW.

Here is the map of its movements
The odd squiggles on the map tracks are because the mob tracked through one of those peaks and I had to run around it. The track from 9 to 10 is a straight line through the Lava Lake, I had to run around the outside until it emerged.

Parked 2 toons with tank mercs at the 2 spots.

Ran the bard over to the graveyard (dragon skeleton) and high sunned every mob from there to the wiz portal. Any mob that remained on my agro list was tracked and killed. Eventually I high sunned the correct 2 mobs to the spawn points where my toons killed. While the bard was killing everything from Veeshans peak to the wiz portal, he spawned after only 2 ph's at the 560, -3840 location. After looting it and moving the bard to Burning Woods he popped in the other location after 3 ph's.

I must be crazy cause i decided i was going to camp this mob again. I had a character camped at each of the 2 spots. Went with other chars and cleared as much of the zone as i could until mobs started spawning in those 2 spots. Nailed 29 placeholders in one spot and 24 so far at the other spot. I haven't seen Eldrig the Old in either spot or anywhere in the zone. I honestly don't remember it being this bad. The hard part was always just getting them to spawn in both spots. Once that was done it was just a few place holders and eldrig would spawn. It finally spawned in one of the spots and i was able to kill it to get the epic drop that i needed.

Location 1770, -3850, -167 , which is the north of the 2 is where I got him to spawn. It seems from the info here, that he can spawn in either spot. The trick is to camp something on each spot, until you finally kill the one that respawns on your spot. I had a chromadrac spawn on first respawn, and I waited until respawn to note what spawned, and it was .. a mature wurm. Once you have at least one spot, you can just kill that spot. The spawn after the initial respawn was Eldrig for me, but it did take me an hour and half to bard track the area and pull. Im thinking that the spawn doesn't path all around the zone possibly, but stays relatively on east/northeast side of zone.

This was a huge bottle neck for me on the Bard epic. It took several nights in this zone and probably 8 hours of time to finally get him to spawn. The main theory below is that you park a FTP character or a second account character over at his spawn point and then run around high sunning mobs until the one single mob in the whole zone that spawns over on the east side of the zone lands on your FTP and starts hitting them.

I tried this the first night and it was taking forever. It took me much longer to high sun a dozen mobs than it did to just run around and agro a group of 12 of them and kill them all real fast. It doesnt really matter if you high sun or kill, eventually something should spawn on your FTP character and you are done. If it is a PH then you still have to run over and kill it (if you high sun) and will have to wait on a respawn.

So the second night in the zone I would wipe as many mobs as i could see in various portions of the zone. Basically I focused on SW of the big lake, then NW of the big lake, then NE, then SE, then back to SW... and so on. The thought was that eventually I would kill the PH and Eldrig would show up on track. I left my FTP character at the south Eldrig spawn point and did not get a single PH or Eldrig to spawn on her. This was the result of 4 hours and hundreds of dead mobs. I even swam the lake and killed anything hanging out on bottom. It boils down to killing or high sunning the PH, and if you never cross its path you are simply out of luck.

Night 3 I just parked my FTP on the East side of the lake out on the outskirts of the mobs and pulled huge trains to her. The majority of the zone (around the perimeter) does not have mobs, they all seem to be somewhat near the lake. Eldrig never showed up on track.

Night 4 I did the same and just pulled mobs to my FTP shammy. It only took about 30 mins and he showed up on track on the east side of the zone moving south towards the zone in just like on the maps. Ran over, keeled his **** fast, and collected the guts.

Good luck, this was not a fun part of the epic.
Notes on Eldrig spawn on Vox

Let me start by saying this is my 2nd Bard epic. The first time was so long ago, 8 or more years ago so I don’t remember much about it. When I came back to EQ after many years gone I found my character was hopelessly outdated so I re-rolled on Vox. However this meant needing to do my Bard epic again. So I came back to this page to see what I could learn about Eldrig, and found that there is nothing really known except the 2 potential spawn locations.

On Friday night I was passing through Burning Woods and saw Nezzy on track, I wacked her and got the guts. So I decided now was the time to get Eldrig. I parked my War bot at the North Spawn point and began Highsunning mobs. 20 minutes later a drake popped at the North Spawn point and I killed it with War bot.

This is where the first difference occurred, the respawn was 10:45 not 13 minutes. I don’t know if all spawns have been shortened or this is just on Vox. I sat through 2 hours of respawns with no Eldrig.
Day 2, took me 1 ½ hours to get the PH and 3 more hours of no Eldrig.
Day 3, 3 hours and no PH. So I moved to the Southern Spawn point and 1 hour later I had it. After 3 spawns I had Eldrig.
During my time in Skyfire I noticed that the mobs would frequently stop for 30 seconds or so and then move off, sometimes there would be a stack of 3 or 4 mobs on those spots.

Here’s my hypothesis;
  1. The zone is full of “Intersection Points” that the mobs randomly travel between.
  2. When a mob reaches its target “Intersection Point” it will stop for 30ish seconds then pick a new IP and travels in a straight line to that next IP.
  3. The Eldrig PH from the Southern Spawn point has a fixed track till it reaches point 1 (takes about 10 minutes to cover this distance), then it is random.
  4. The Eldrig PH can be any type of mob, so concentrating on “just chromodracs” is not a good idea.
  5. It appears the Eldrig PH could be anywhere in the zone (sorry), but he did cross the area south of the lava lake 5 times in 85 minutes, so it might be a good place to concentrate your efforts.

I assume that this basic information is good for the Northern Spawn point, since it would be crazy for a lazy programmer to code 2 different mob techniques in the zone, but I can't confirm, except that the initial track from there is NW.

A possible technique for those who aren't able to kill every mob in the zone...
  • Pop a familiar at the start.
  • Kill the next oldest mob to your familiar (check tracking), this way you won't keep killing respawned mobs.

Good Luck!

Here is what I did. I logged in my druid and parked her at one spawn location, and my mage at the other. I then took my ranger and started tracking mature and regular chromadrac. Within half hour my mage was being hit on by a wurm. I switched to druid and a Wyvern was right by her so I tagged it. Voila I had both Ph's down. I can't believe it I was there last night just running around and thought I be smarter about it and this worked out great. Within half hour Eldrig spawned at the druid location. The spawn itself was weird cause a sky ash drake was on track and then disappeared and Eldrig was there instead. It can be done guys. This was the last piece I needed for my baby bard. Now off to get her some levels so she can start the quest. Good Luck!

This guy sucks.... mobs are spread out all over the place. Finally got it to spawn on the East side of zone around the P 550, N 4085 after basically wiping out the entire zone with 100 MAG and parking the bard at that spawn point. There were several different mobs types (wyvern, wurms, devourer, etc.) that spawned before him so it's impossible to figure out what "type" you need to kill.... Map picture inc...

Edit - Found him again and Highsuned him to the 2nd spawn north of the first one. P 1765, N 163

For skyfire map locs -

Yah, you need to sit a character at the spawn spot and clear the zone. Once something spawns at the spot just north of the Overthere zone, it is all down hill since the respawns are fairly quick. I did it in November, and it wasn't so bad.

To my Skyfire 2 map. Seems like an odd spot but will keep an eye out for any spawns close to that spot. EDIT: No luck. It was up on a mountain north west of the druid port in spot. Had a character camped up on top of that mountain even though i figured nothing would spawn up top.

I spent some time killing placeholders around the area that fcoty mentioned. That caused the ph to spawn at around Positive 1750 Negative 3850. The other one took a lot more clearing to do. This clearing took place between the Overthere entrance and along the lava trail leading to the lava lake in the middle of the zone. I don't know if it was one of the ph along the trail or closer to the lake but i finally got the ph to start spawning at the other location at about Positive 550 Negative 4000. This took multiple characters so you may want to bring help if you don't multi box. One person sitting at each camp and one killing everything in those 2 areas.

Here is what I got today,.... took me a 7 hours to get Eldrig the Old to spawn. I was boxing a mag and 2 trackers. A bard and a Ranger. I parked the Ranger at -1750, +3850 and went to the center lava pool. I was fighting at the South east part of the lava pool. I focused on killing a mature chromadrac, because that spawned Faerie of Dismay. And RIGHT after killing Faerie of Dismay for the 5th time I seen my Ranger getting attacked on the group window. I looked at my Ranger screen and sure enough he was being attacked by Eldrig the Old. Killed him and bard looted the gut.

I hope this helps

So I too used the Highsun method.. I parked a toon with merc on each PH spot..

I found this guy exactly where everyone else reported, once you leave the Wiz port go east out of it, then turn north. There is a lava stream straight north.. Either clear all the mobs or Highsun both sides of the lava stream.. Sitting on this spawn point I killed 50+ mobs and no Eldrig.

-1750, +3850.
I found this guy by clearing mobs in the large center lava pool and everything to the north/east an south/east of the center lava pool. 2nd spawn and I got Eldrig..

1st spawn, 12+ hours 5kpp & 14aa's (lvl 66), 2nd spawn, 2 hours flat..
