Confirmed that lvl 39 charm works just fine (Solon's Bewitching Bravura)...
Pulled all Maligar's buddies on 56 warrior one at a time & killed them, then put cleric's HoT on my lvl 47 bard & dragged Maligar's bum over to me with charm, handed him note, he respawned into Maligar's Enraged Doppleganger version immidiately. Killed him with warrior & looted the head on bard.

Btw my bard is a drakkin & was KoS to Maligar.

OK now this is it listen carefully. You don't have to pull any other mobs then Maligar himself just by using Solon's Bewiching Bravura a 39th level song then move away from the camp and when your clear, hand in the note and then the doppleganger should pop kill him and loot the head. Oh no.... you don't need the mask...... and yes this is the best way to do it.... loc for him is roughly +1200, -10900 or so... GOOD LUCK!!! =D
Turned in

I used a mask of deception to get my faction from Dubious to Apprehensive, and was able to turn this in and spawnt he doppleganger at lvl 45.
faction?
# Mar 11 2005 at 4:29 PM Rating: Decent
I tried to turn in my note yesturday and he attacked me.....Im assuming its because he has Bloodsabre(dark elf) faction. Im guessing that the only way to do the turn in is the ol charm trick, get a mask of deception or get a chanter to cast DE illusion on you. I tried to charm him, but the charm I had was not strong enough to land on him....you need Solon's Bewitching Bravura to charm him, Solon's Song of the Sirens wont stick, hes to high of a level. So, Im off to get the Bravura and try again. And, as a side note, you are going to want to bring a group with you in case things get nasty....he's no light weight.

I just tried to hand in my note yesterday, Lamented his bodyguards, snuk up behind him, and turned in the note. All I got was, "I Will do nothing to aide beings like you." And he ate my note, and dident spawn his Doppleganger. So be careful when turning it in... Sol A is a pain.

I can vouch for this. My 44 bard turned in the note in same manner and Maligar said same thing...I will not aide beings like you. My bard is not agnostic therefore cannot use mask of deception. THinking of trying a dark elf illusion using 65 chanter alt since mask does same effect. Anyone know if this is level restricted to 51+?

I was running through karana today when i happened to see Maligar and his buddied. I had forgotten he was part of the bard epic, noted that he was dark blue to me and decided I wanted the xp for whackin him. I pacified the lot, individually pulled and killed his buddied, rested and medded a bit, then killed ole maligar. Bit of a whimp really.

It seems years since the first time I traveled through West Karana and "discovered" Maligar and his little group of bushwackers. I was young and weak then, merely 15. Well, I paid him and his bullies a visit last night, and surprise, I'm all grown up now, 53 to be exact. As I approached the spot where my corpse laid so many "years" ago I slowed down, carefull to inch my way closer. The years had made me wiser. As I got closer I began to cast Harmony over and over on the closest scoundrel until I was finally in range and it worked. I pulled the first victem, I introduced myself, she did not seem to remember me, no matter she soon fell over dead from the sting of a swarm of poisonous insects. I pulled the next and the next until only Maligar was left. I took a moment and rested beyond the ridge, just out of Maligar's sight. I ran through in my head how Maligar had blinded me as a boy and took but 1 spell to kill me in seconds. I knew I was stronger now,I gathered my rage, stood up and walked right up to Maligar and struck him with my Tarnished Driveshaft. He began casting, Blindness!, I resisted. I cast Nulify Magic, it took. I saw the concern on Maligar's face as I began to cast again. I cast Winged Death! it hit. Maligar, doubled in pain, continued casting, I resisted, resisted, resisted. I smiled at Maligar as I cast Breath of Ro, it hit. One last spell, Starfire! I knew Maligar would soon be dead. I stood there and watched as the life drained from his body.......90 seconds later and it was over, Maligar fell Dead! The fears of the Boogey Man in Karana vanished from my mind. I walked away happy with the day.

I tried taking him on with my 55 ranger (not knowing who he was or what he was for). One Firestrike landed on him for 302...knocked his hp's down to 97% /sigh.

So, he has a bucketload of hp for a level 40 something mob.

Don't Charm

It is not necessary to charm Maligar. I am a half-elf bard, lvl 51, and went with a few of my guildies (49 Sham, 49 Ranger, 52 Necro).

I lulled, and then singled pulled Maligar's freinds. (Who all conned indifferent to me). Then I just gave Maligar the note and his evil spawned when I clicked give.

Word of advise, play your magic resist song with drum in hand before you hand him note, as I got feared that instant and by the time I made it back to fight, Maligar Evil had only 10% of his life left so I ended up missing most of the kill. :(

My 39 ranger was another victim to Maligar. Like so many before, was just wandering along north wall of West Karana, off doing something else. Glanced back at my screen, health was at 5%. Death came to claim me soon after. Camoed myself and dragged my corpse to safety, worked well. Stay away from this dude if you're not doing the bard quest!!

He spawns with a group of NPCs at approximately pos1000 neg10000, a bit northeast of the Ogre temple, on a raised platform in the rocky area along the northern zone wall.

Maligar was indifferent to my Half Elven 46 Bard. I decided to Charm anyway. He broke it early (it's a 1 minute duration normally) and proceed to Root, Fear and double DoT me. The second attempt went better :)

He poofs the moment you press the "Give" button, spawning his Doppleganger, from whom one gets "Maligar's Head" for the Page 24 Bottom part of the Bard Epic.

Have had a grudge match going with this guy for a long, long time. He dropped my monk who was trippin' thru the woods innocent and vulnerable. Had a bit of trouble getting my corpse, so I set out for revenge. My monk was mid-30 first time and was never able to come close to killing him right up to late 40's (monk vs caster scenario = Loading, please wait).

Finally tried for revenge using my druid, starting at level 48. Had three or four close calls until he dotted me and I didn't pay enough attention and died well after I zoned out. I tried every technique I had ever used as a druid and nothing worked. I mean nothing. Finally, I decided I was tired futzing around and just loaded up on DD's, buffed up, and snared him away from the camp. Just stood toe to toe and casted and smacked him 'till he died. Took me down to about 15 percent health which was way, way better than I had ever done before. I was really surprised that I did kill him, but it got to be a matter of pride. We all know what pride goeth before... Anyway, all the normal tactics were just useless against this guy. He hits very hard and interrupts your casts, he casts DoT's on you and debuffs and disperses your SoW and on and on. Also, he won't run after you very far, just stays close to the group and hits you with a DoT when you come back to "lure" him away...big mistake. Without gate, he'd have killed me 5 or 6 times instead of twice (counting the first time with my monk). Oh well, finally got my revenge and I can go back to useful endeavors... :-)

BTW for the bards who can't figure out why we try to kill this guy, sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. I'm sure that enlightened you considerably. (Translation: we stupid, but happy).

We just did this guy for a bard who was KOS to Maligar. Kill all the "friends" hanging around Maligar by single pulling them. Then the bard needs to charm Maligar, turn him into his pet. Then the bard hands the note to Maligar to spawn the enraged dopelgangar.

We tried Cinda's Charismatic Carillon which didn't work, we tried all his illusion masks and wolf form. None of it worked. The only way the bard could turn in was to charm using Solon's Bewitching Bravada

He went down within about 60 seconds with a group of 6: 52 bard, 51 druid, 60 cleric (who didn't need to cast one heal), 58 rogue, 56 enchanter, and 51 warrior.

I just killed this guy with a 50th level Paladin. Not too tough until the very end. Some things that confuse me:

1) Just how many friggin HP's do npc casters have?
2) What PC caster of ANY class can punch for 97 points?
3) How come these guys are scowling at EVERYONE? The only reason I killed him was for payback from 25th or so when he killed me for going through W. Karana along the north wall (How dare I!?!)

I kicked his butt up between his teeth and then, at like one bubble of health... I just couldn't hurt him... He began those punches and made me LOH... At that EXACT moment, I began doing damage again and he started "the walk"...

All in all I just HATE this guy!

took him out last night solo. Lvl 52 bard. well now lvl 51 again. first time i made the mistake of using my weapons while i feared and chanted him. after trying to retrieve my corpse and the doppleganger standing on top of it, I selo'd around in a large circle a few times. picking up my corpse and gear on each pass. using the selo's song that lasts for what 2.5 minutes? I chanted him to death with fear and chants. no chains. fear would wear off once ina while till i got it reapplied. would have to break off the fight to heal up after getting hit with a few dots of his. but he would always chase me. good thing his regen is rather slow. 2 or 3 times of healing up to full and he was toast. aftr handing maligar the note. run away quite some distance then slowly walk back into dopplegangers range and he is the only one that will come at you. maligar wil stay put.

Having killed him before, by accident while helping a friend with her bard epic, I can say he isn't a real problem for me, at the time being a 48 sk, anyways, he does drop more than just a worn robe at times. The robe he drops is "Maligar's Robe," and is No-Drop, Lore, and Magic, although the specifics of the robe i cannot remember, as being an sk, i really had no need for it. Obviously, this isn't a common occurance, as i have yet to see the stats on this robe posted, or even the robe itself listed as a drop, although at the time of killing him, it did seem a decent robe, other than the No-Drop problem. Since I killed him, we had to wait for his punkass to respawn so the bard could do her thing... anyways, if anyone else has seen this robe and can remember the stats, drop me an email, i might grab one for my chanter if the stats are there. But again, yes, he does drop more than a worthless worn robe, although obviously, not very often.

Serra never said the mother told her Baenar was the father. Drives me nuts, too. Here afe the facts.

Deliver Serra's "Note to Baenar" - he will, in part, say:

'A note from the child? How can that be! How could she know I was her father? Unless? Cyrah told her. Forgive me. Cyrah was the name of the woman to whom I was betrothed.

( blah blah , /cry baenar , /comfort baenar )

I do not like Maligar, but the least we can do is inform him of his child's death.

( etc. )

Receive "Note to Maligar" - have a few ales, get ready for battle.

These guys are for a bard quest, try getting a bardy to fire up invis song or the Song of Travel. Have them follow you in or consent them to pull for you as these songs are trustworthy once they kick in.

I'll have to test if WF alters the /con on these meanies as I will soon be delivering the note.

Maligar himself is easy...
Its when you turn in the note from his undead daughter Sera from Unrest and the doppleganger spawns that you get blinded (basically unresistable).
Ensure that you charm Maligar so that when you are done if there are multiple bards you can hand him the next note or tell him to sit and another doppleganger will spawn. "so ive heard".

Went after him with a 41 Mage, 41 Pally (me), 40 Ranger, 33 Ranger and a 35 Pally... were just pokin around killing choon/froon and HG's, then the 33 had the idea of payback, well, after much himming and hawing, we went on over to get him The 40 ranger pulled him out with no others aggro'ing (Mal conn'd 40 btw). We proceeded to get feared and darkness, we had sow, he was snared, so no real concern. Once we got on him, it was over. His drop was the worn robe (eru wiz) which we tried to give to a lowbie eru wiz in zone, when tried to give it to him, was a lore conflict, so seems to be the plain old starting robe that they get. This guy is a royal pain and not worth the time or trouble to kill, but if he ever caught you unawares at lower lvl's, by all means, kill him....feels really good!

First time i saw this guy was last night while on corpse retrieval for a friend who passed through there. He was the only blue one at 51. He casts and casts forever. So if you got any MR gear better put it on. Otherwise there will be lights off for the majority of the battle. I even had to use LoH because with all this darkness you never know when u are gonna die. So i would suggest if you dont have anything particular to do with him stay away. Taking Down Maligar
# May 13 2001 at 3:34 PM Rating: Default
Me (level 44 cleric) and a level 40 druid took this guy down the other day, fear kiting style. We had no idea what he was all about, but we just wanted to do it to try it. The druid harmonied the other npc's, single pulled Maligar with snare, and we proceeded to kite Maligar around WK for about 15mins before we finally got him. This may be a good strategy for bards, harmony the helpers to get them out of the way, then atone/mind blur him at a safe distance? Just a thought. Anyway, it was somewhat tough for my partner and I to take him out. He appears to be level 40, conned even to the druid, and is perhaps a pure necro, although we never got close enough to melee him. His favorite spells are a poison based dd spell for 160, which isn't too hard, and the blinding/fear spell, which isn't too bad if you have sow or wolf on. After a prolonged fight, Maligar went down.

Okay, first off... most of the folks who are killing, or trying to kill Maligar don't even need to :). Unless you are a bard, working on your epic, you shouldn't even need to go near him. If you want to know exactly what it's all about, for us bards out there wondering, I will tell you exactly :).

In South Karana, Near the Well, you will find a Man named: Baenar Swiftsong. Target Baenar and Say: what doll?. He will proceed to doubt himself a bit, then hand you an invoice, for a man Named Marfen Binkdripple - which if you know SolA - he is the Merchant in Solsek Mining Co. who sells the Tinker bags/Jboots. (Yes he sells Jboots now for 5.5k) Give him the invoice, and he will Hand you a Mechanical Doll. You must take the doll to a little girl in unrest, you will find her behind the waterfall next to the gnomish spelunker. swim underwater to the right and around behind the fall, hand her the doll, and she then thanks you for the doll, and sends you back to Baenar with another note. Baenar is surprised, yet in disbelief, he hands you a note, to give to Maligar, Serra's Biological Father in WK. Aprox loc: p1300, n11150. Depending on faction you might not have to charm him to give him the note. - my faction cons indifferently. Give him the note, and Voila! The Estranged Doppleganger - You will need a full group of High 40s to low 50s to kill everything. - The reward is his head, which you must take back to Baenar, who will reward you with: Mahlin's Bongos. The Bongos must then be taken to Konia Swiftfoot, the same woman you spoke to about the Relay Torch Race. Reward: Maestro's Symphony Page 24 Bottom.

As I think most people will "stumble onto" these 4 npc's - as opposed to being dumb enough to actually go looking for them - chances are your corpse will be located not far from where you first caught sight of them. Once they spot you, you will probably be blinded very quickly and your death follows shortly thereafter.

Although it's been posted that they spawn at +1000 -10000, a more accurate loc is +1186 -10682. That loc puts you at the base of a ridge and slightly south of the 4 npc's. At that point I could barely see them off in the distance.

To get to the spot, I moved to the +1000 North/South parameter and began to follow it West toward the -10000 loc. This will get you there, but at around -5000 West you'll hit a ridge with a Bandit Camp. Just over the ridge and slightly North is another grouping of Bandits. I steered North to circle the entire area and then moved back toward my goal of +1000 -10000 after I was well past them all. The only other activity I saw in the area was a Treant, but it passed quietly while I waited.

Be aware that, once in this neck of the woods, you are also quite close to the Ogre encampment. The site is out in the open and would be difficult to hit by accident, but the Ogres have a very wide "frenzy range" and you should be cautious.

Once I reached +1000 -10000, I moved toward the +1186 -10682 spot. From there I could see the npc's, but couldn't see my corpse. Just to the South of that position is a rise, from where I could survey the entire layout around the npc's. From there I spotted my corpse laying not far from one of the npc's feet.

At this point it's simply a matter of finding the direction to get close enough to your corpse to summon without crossing into someone's range and having them all aggro on you.

Last of all, once you've looted your corpse, the temptation is to run like h*ll out of the area. Resist the temptation and think your way out. There are many other things, such as the Ogres, Treants, and groups of Bandits that make this particular little corner of West Karana pretty dangerous for a solo artist.

Good luck!

Thanks. Just got beat down by these guys while trying to do the investigator quest in Qey. Stumbled on to em, they conned indif, so I thought I'd drop invis and say hi. Yeah I know. I'm a moron.

The 4 NPC's don't see through invis. At least not at level 52..I can't comment on any level lower.

They don't see through druid Camouflage, either.

I can vouch for the fact they don't see thru invis. I was running thru WK, following an enchanter friend who, for some reason, preferred to run thru the mountainous area, rather than take the direct route thru the middle of the zone.
Anyway, we ran right overtop of these guys, I had 'gather shadows' going, since I was a level 16 necro. They didn't aggro at all.
Unfortunately that's probably not true for the ogres nearby. They DO see thru invis, so it's best to just stay out of the woods if you can, the worst thing in the middle of the zone is the occasional bandit (level 8-15). Or if you're really unlucky 'The Swarm'... the swarm is random, these guys are always there... take your pick. =)

I'm in complete agreement about stumbling onto them by accicdent instead of going looking for them. My first run through WK, I figured, like most zones, the wall would be the safest place to pass through. Unfortunately the north wall is not the safest. I saw them all standing there and figured it was a group of PC's camping something since I couldn't see the color of their names from the distance I was at. I was brought down with a single shot and spent the next hour trying to get someone to come with me close enough to the camp so they could invis me and I could recover before it ran out. If you're just passing through, find the water to the south and run along the shore the entire way. Just my 2cp. ;-)

I just killed him working on my eppic. Had a 58 paly, 59 enc, 53 war, 43 wiz, & 49 bard. Enc tried to charmed (and failed I think) Maligar. Him and his friends all aggroed on us & we dropped em in under 1 min. Enc finally charmed him and I handed in my note and "Maligars Enraged Dopplgan" spawned ontop of Maligar. Both conned blue to me (49) and the 43 wiz. Maligar had a cold based DS and blinded the 58 paly (with some dam good magic resist buffs on) and possibly cast other necro spells that I didn't notice. Both dropped "Old Used Robe*" 2ac Erudite wizzy only. The Dopplganger dropped Malgiars head. At the end of it all, the 2 casters were down about a bubble and Quilsa was down half a bubble & the shaman was looking very bored trying to find something to heal.
He spwans at 1,000 -10,000

I soloed him out of curiosity for what he would drop. Only got an old used robe and some decent exp. Is the old used robe useful to anyone other than a bard? The 3 other aggro NPCs were a11 green. I killed them all just out of aggro range. He's an easy kill at 52 (for a wiz anyways). No faction hits.

Bards don't need the robe he drops. We can either sneak up to him or charm him and give him a note we received earlier in the quest. This spawns Maligar's Enraged Doppleganger. Kill both and loot the Doppleganger's head which is what we need.

He is the guy for part of the bard epic however he is not a bard, in fact he is some kind of shadow knight with harm touch and loves to fear and blind. When you hand him the note for the bard epic a Maligar Doppleganger spawns and both of these attack you. a level 50ish party can easily take these 2 and if you are 50+ only maligar and the doppleganger should aggro you. he was KOS to an agnostic woodelf bard but dubious to agnostic dark elf bard. He and the doppleganger gave no faction hits for killing them. It takes some insane MR to resits his blind spell and it seems to last forever.

He isn't a Bard, but he is for the Bard epic. Supposedly, when you hand him a note notifying him of his dead daughter, Maligar's Enraged Doppleganger spawns and attacks you. Does anyone know the level of the Doppleganger?
