The 2 snakes in the pit are not Phers. The Ph is "a patrolling gnoll". 2 of them wander the area but the one that travels through the pit is the correct one. Elgnub will spawn inside the alcove in front of the door at (+196, +158, -56). So sit in the alcove so he attacks when he spawns. If the "a patrolling gnoll" wanders by instead, kill it and wait another 7 minutes and 35 seconds. Good luck. No need to see they Sayers, they do not trigger it. Just a plain old PH. I sat a second toon at the mayers doing nothing but watching to see if anyone came by. No one spoke to them or was near them during the 3 times Elgnub spanwed for me. Waste your time running back and forth if you wish but there are not connected. Try it, open a 2nd free account and sit someone there yourself.

I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you thought you heard was not what I meant.
I was in BB trying to figure out the brewer spawn and had track on normal. POP and a Bue Lord E was on track. followed through back halls and untilately to the snake pit with the floor spikes. killed him and looted the doll. Location was 194, 143, and memory served to say it had to be one of the snakes that was his PH. Below in other posts, my experience confirms the spawn point as that snake at that location.
as said below years ago its the snake in pit nearest door which is he PH i killed 2 snakes Ph and then he spawned and dropped baby. in BBu trying to raise merchants of qeynos faction from dubious up, 3 days here killed over 2000 gnolls, faction still has not moved
I know kegcleaner's post is almost a year-and-a-half old, but I'd like to correct it anyway for the benefit of others that may come along.
Unless things have changed dramatically in the low-level Blackburrow, Lord Elgnub's ONLY placeholder is the snake nearest the door in the pit.
Whether he spawns spontaneously without killing anything (I've never waited that long) or spawns after killing the snake by the door, he WILL replace that snake. I've killed many things in many parts of BB, including the wandering Patrolling Gnoll, and have never seen Elgnub spawn anywhere but in place of the snake nearest the door in the pit, though it does take awile, at least in all of my experiences.
camped this mob 2 days in a row. did not spawn at all. is he still here? does he spawn? when? any updated info would be nice. thx guys.

Just got done killing him with my 27 bard. I simply went to the loc 207, 140 and waited until 10 PM game time. He was a few seconds late but he is there. He pops inside the snake pit and fell very quickly.
He is not triggered by talking to Sayer or killing snakes or anything like that. He just spawns there no matter what you do. From what I saw its about an hour on respawn but it varies some. He does despawn if you miss him but its not an superfast despawn like the little mole in Kurns tower. If you have tracking as long as you hang out between the two commander rooms and see him on track you can usually get to the spike pit in time. He spawns in the middle of the pit and then roams up the ramp a little then despawns. If you want to catch him before he self buffs then jus wait in the spike pit and he will pop about in the center of the pit. With the upgrade for this wpn now easier being that the mob was moved outside of the dungeon everyone should do it also. Its a fun sword to click and have a pet for the non-pet classes.
Was here in Blackburrow today trying to save my baby ( HEEHEE ) he was exactly as stated above at the snake pit (spikes and all ) loc +207.0 +140.94 at 10pm game time, i was in the process of takeing a screenshot and he does despawn, and then respawned at 12pm game time so if you see him dont dilly dally. hope this helps ye all

Ok to make Lord Elgnub spawn you must kill rooms full of stuff around him.Kill the snakes by the ladder, and should spawn in no time. But be careful cause he is an sk and will HT at the very start of the battle and other gnolls will attack if in agro range.
Heh, we logged 2 beastlords, lvl 18 and 17. Sicced pets on him and chain cast them once each. He ran at 50%!!! Ez kill. Confirmed that he does harm touch and dot. Got the first pet to 40% on the first hit.

Somewhere heckling Fleven about updating quest info lol...
I fought Elgnub once. I was lvl 22 and i was a dwarf warrior. It sucked because I was fighting him, and I was killing him too. Then, my stupid brother came running by me, trailed by bunches of gnolls. Anyways, they saw me attacking Elgnub and attacked me.I died. But this guy is cool if you can kill him lol....i never got too.....waah

HOLY FRIGGIN CRAP!!!! ITS TO SHORT!! WHAT THE HECK IS IT?!?!?! It is gnome.
Was hanging around here w/ my warrior to do this quest and midnight rolled around and this guy did not spawn, waited a little longer but nothing. Kind of sucks, but I figure I'll try again in a few.
With my ranger ive looking for this guy forever. Hes never there when i look. Today I entered the zone, checked track and he was there. Noone else was in the zone. I ran to the pit to kill him but when i got there... HE WAS GONE! Checked tracking again and nothing. Whats going on with this guy and what is his spawn / despawn time?
I do think Lord Elgnub may spawn as a result of talking to Marton Sayer about the Gnoll Slayer. I had been trying to get Lord Elgnub to pop. I waited around the snake pit in BB. I cleared the near by rooms and waited some more. I tried again the next day, still nothing. I decided to talk to Sayer and went back to the snake pit. Within 15 minutes Lord Elgnub popped. Might be coincidence, but worked for me.
I have only ever seen him spawn at midnight EQ time. Many times he spawned at 12:00 and then people have said he spawned again after I left. Just today I logged on in the pit at 4AM so my friend could get the gnoll slayer. We kept killing everything in the area so he would spawn, didn't seem to do anything because a long while later at midnight, he spawned.

I saw this guy spawn 3 different times with my 22nd level ranger.
The first time, he conned Blue. I attacked him, but the fight didn't go well and I had to flee.
Then next time, he conned Yellow. so I didn't mess with him.
The third time I ran into to him, he conned blue. I attacked him and was able to finish him off after a very tough fight. I returned Marton's son to him and recieved the sword.
I cleared both the lower room below. Entry is doorway below the plankway. This room has 3-5 to gnolls, usually a gnolls and patrolling gnolls and the gnoll commander room where the gnoll refugee spawns at.Lord Elgnub spawns in the spike floor room about 7-10mins after rooms are cleared but one time took 3 clearings to get him to spawn so am sure if this mattered or not. He conned yellow to my 22 ranger. Map for Black Burrow can be found here at http://www/eqatlas.com/blackburrow.html

i was PLing my bubby for about an hour and this guy poped up twice and i was well awary of who he was having haised all of my 4 alts and me all in BB i kinda had it down. So my buddy is a lvl 9 at the time so i tell him to stay back (fearing that he would get harm touched) so i root him for 88, then i nuke him 2 times for 286 each and he is at very low health so another 88dmg root finished him off so all that is only 748 so in another 15 mins i let my budy try it and i have to say the Lord is by far impredictable. At 50% re ran and of corse the newbie runs right after forgeting that his damage sheild is what is killing the thing and bam next thing i know i have the luxary of watching Refugee Splitpaw healing Lord while the newbie has about 7 things all attacing him mostly gaurdsmen and elites. And well at this point im oom and i have then all attacking me even lord who hit me for anastounding 43 multiple times. Wel long storie short i had one nuke to kill off Refugee and then i rooted Lord and let his agression kill him on my buddys DS. Ok sorry /newbie rant off. Now its time to spend my money buying him stuff yippie. But in the end he goat the XP from Lord and he got the baby but now how does his SK butt turn it in ohh well. thats my 2cp and rant see ya.
I'm not so sure. I was helping a friend PL a monkie. He was level 9. He was very reluctant to fight the gnoll conscripts or whatever. This is difficult wihtout showing on the map, but you have the snake pit, then you have the three doors, the one is not usable. in each one of those main areas is a different kind of gnoll... like a conscript of a courier and Im not looking to get flamed but we killed those because they were good xp to him. And POOF this guy DID spawn right after. in the snake pit on the other side of the door that does not work... the only reason we even knew is he was hitting the monk through the door. I had to run around to the other side and kill the guy. He did have the baby. I am just saying perhapse he indeed CAN be spawned but most do not see him because hes ont he other side of the door. so kill the one guy, then the other... THEN the guy in the middle by the door that does not open. or... one on the side so oyu can run around it real quick?
Not a triggered spawn. He pops in and out from time to time. I tracked him today and right before I was ready to attack, he despawned. I sat down and waited and a few minutes later he repopped. He did the same thing when I was tracking him yesterday, I got there just in time to watch him vanish. I did kill him today and got the baby. He opens up with a huge HT attack, after that he's easy and just hits you with a few Lifetaps. I had him on the run quick with dual wield, double attack and my handy Ignite and Flame Lick spells. It also helped that I was level 26 to his 21. :P

If you were me and I were you, would we still be friends?
I was in my low 40's when I went hunting here with a monk guildmate of mine (messed up one of his headband quests, so had to start over, and hunt gnolls). We were going around killing gnolls (being careful to only go where there weren't any groups camping, so we weren't KS'ing), when I see this guy on track. Since I've done the quest already for the intermediate sword, he and I downed this guy (as partially a favor to the groups in their teens trying to hunt the area), and let someone loot (could have asked for money for loot rights, but didn't bother). Ok...the Lord's dead, so we go back to whacking gnolls in a different part of the place. Where it is said that the PH's are, or mobs to force spawn, they were still up, so I am thinking now that he is a random spawn with no PH. Anyways, we are hunting when I get this tell from someone in the snake pit area asking for us to rid him. I tell my guildmate that, and we're both like, "What's going on here?" My whole time camping Blackburrow, sometimes several hours at a time, I hadn't seen him spawn once (except the one time for my sword at level 33), let alone twice in one night. The fact that it was within 10 min. of spawns got me thinking. Also, another strange fact: when I was level 33 and solo'd him, he never cast on me (or HT'd) at all; however, at low 40's, he HT'd me both times with my level 50 monk guildie there.
I've been hunting in Blackburrow quite a bit lately and have seen my share of Lord Elgnub. If there's nobody in the zone who wants him, I kill him and get some experience from turning in Baby Joseph, so I've taken him on dozens of times.
Elgnub is level 21-23, his harm touch is always 211, 221 or 231 points.
I don't think he's triggered by killing anything in Blackburrow as I've seen him spawn when I was the only person in the zone (and nothing's getting killed) or when the zone is overrun by high-level evil characters (trying to raise Qeynos faction and everything's getting killed).
I also find it hard to believe that he's triggered by talking to Marton Sayer since he's almost always left alone when he does spawn. My theory is that, if talking to Marton was the trigger, then more people would do that, then run to BB to kill him. Just haven't seen that.
His spawn rate is really weird, though. Almost always, after he's spawned once, he'll spawn up to 3 more time within a half-hour, then he disappears for a long time. There was literally one time when I did the quest three times in succession within about fifteen minutes.
As other people have noted, the only real danger that he poses is his harm touch. If you can absorb the max 231 points, he's a piece of cake.

I obtained Gnoll Slayer today, and I agree that he has to be a triggered spawn and that killing something is not necessary to spawn him. After speaking with Marton Sayer, I went directly to the Snake Pit, waited about 30 minutes, and he popped right in front of the door at the bottom of the pit.
I am an untwinked, level 29 Warrior (hell, I am still using the Warsword of the Battlemaster and the Packmaster's Lash), and he was an easy kill.
Lord Elgnub is on a spawn cycle, he is not triggered by anything. Talking to Marton Sayer about the Gnoll Slayer has absolutely NOTHING to do with this. What you do in one zone never directly triggers something in another zone. Qeynos Hills and Blackburrow are each run on separate computers and have nothing to do with one another save for the inter-zone connection. To think that talking with Sayer about the quest pops the Lord is erroneous, as the only thing in Everquest that can have an actual effect on another zone is waking up the Sleeper.
There are some things that affect other zones. An example: Failing the ring war in Great Divide causes all the dwarves in Thurgadin to be "killed" (aka, all dwarves repop as "X's corpse")

I transfered by 34 Ranger from another server to MT and decided to do this quest. I buffed myself and took it out. I have 1133 hp's and lost about a bubble and a half of health. I was very surprised to get some experience out of it so I would say it is much higher than the 21 mentioned above.

Did him yesterday, enchanter buffed me with magic resist, his HT didn't land once. After he tried that 5 times, i think he was out of mana. Then he started melee, he hit me in total about 6 times, 30 each. No pet. In short, didnt have any problems killing him. But the chanter buff helped a lot i think... He dropped the baby, a one hand staff and some words..
Did hail Sayer, just to be sure, Elgnub popped about half an hour later, but someone told me he also popped an hour before i entered BB, so I can't confirm he's triggered or not... Saw him up a lot back then when i hunted BB in early teens.. But if you want him, go hail Sayer anyway, just to be sure.
If you're bored waiting, just kill some gnolls and buff noobs or help them break a room, it's all so very green in there now (remember my early teens when it all was blue, yellow and red, gnolls kicking my butt), time for revenge, lol.
Ran back to Sayer, got the intermed. version of the gnoll slayer. To bad it doesn't have cool looks, but i will be going after the end version, primarily because of the gnolls threathening surefall and jaggedpine, secondary because of the super cool pet it gives.
I even think i will try and keep getting this, even when i'm at lvl whatever so high, just for the pet (yes, i have always wanted a doggy, lol, and no, my parents never gave me one when i was a kid, lol)
[EDIT] Killed him 3 times in a row today (12th of november 2002), just plain old me without any help. He is on a spawncycle, not triggerd, saw him 5 times on track (of which i killed him 3 times) and let the peeps camping greenroom have the baby. They cheered, i buffed them, lol.
I have confirmed, to my own satisfaction at least, that Lord Elgnub is indeed a triggered spawn. I popped him three times by speaking with Marton Sayer about the quest in the cabin in Qeynos Hills. Each of the three times after talking to him I went directly to the spike pit in blackburrow and waited at the door. About thirty minutes later each time, Elgnub would pop in the tunnel leading to the green room. I never killed any snakes or other gnolls so he has no PH. I was also the only one in zone for 2 kills. Was very green to my 34 druid, never summoned a pet, and harm touched me off the bat for between 270-288 each time. He never cast any spells after that, though. Root, Drones, Immolate, and one combust later he was dead. Very easy kill. Always has Baby Joseph Sayer (lore/nodrop) like the mino hero always has the shackles. The intermediary gnoll slayer was changed to nodrop, so you had better have someone camped near who can use it. Pretty sure that the final slayer can be MQ'd but only by the character who has the sword. I tried handing it in once without the 2 drops from paw and Marton just gave it back to me.
I was hunting for faction in BlackBurrow and helping n00bies when he popped on top of me in the pit. He started by harmtouching for 221 and hitting me for anywhere from 2 to 47, I mended after the HT. Killed him, dropped the baby joseph. He popped twice more within 6 minutes as my mend popped in each battle. He harm touched for 221 every time and only did it once per battle. Also he casts a spell called despair a few times which decreases atk by 5 (lol). At level 27 he was a minor challenge, his only formidible weapon being harmtouch, after he casts it and you live he is yours.
Okay, everyone knows about Qeynos (for those of you who aren't everybody, it's SonyEQ), but what other reversed names are there ? Lord Elgnub ? Are there other Lords as well, like Yppiz, Egroeg and Yeroffeg ?
Not exactly a backwards name but if you rearange the letters in Felwithe, the High Elf city, you can spell White Elf. Saw this on another discussion board. :)
lord elgnub does have a pet conned light blue to my lvl 16 beastlord I saw it come right through where I was resting - it was a skeleton - but the gnolls killed it before it could get across the rock bridge
I haven't timed this or anything, but I went into BB and checked my track - no Lord Elgnub. I watched my track for about 5 minutes and then remembered that I wanted to try talking to Marton Sayer. I ran out and talked to Marton Sayer about gnoll slayer then went back into BB and Lord Elgnub was now on my track. He was at the snake pit with the spikes (as discussed in other posts here). Obviously, having only done this once it could be that talking to Marton was just a coincidence and it was time for the Lord to spawn. Also, though for those people who had Lord Elgnub spawn without them talking to Marton it's possible that some one else talked to Marton while they were camping Lord Elgnub. I know I've talked to him about Gnoll Slayer many times when going there just to sell.
