Should be able to with no problem. I've found them to be easier than some of the regular non-named wurms around the area. Certainly easier than its placeholder, Gullerback. The other Gullerbacks are nasty too, be sure to track and kill the dark blue con one. That's the placeholder. Really seems like the only tricky thing about defeating Azdalin is finding him or getting him to pop.
Azdalin and Gullerback

I was able to take out Azdalin and acquire the scale last night. Using my 51 druid, Azdalin is a piece of cake. Just root/rot/med and he falls easily with very few resists. Azdalin popped twice in a row, just 3 minutes after Gullerback fell.

Gullerback is a different story however...
I pulled Gullerback to the underside of the giant fort since there are very few mobs that walk close to it. With two level 51 druids he was still a major pain, and we had to work together to take him out. (he was blue to us at 51, but has a huge amount of hp) He resisted every snare and root we tried but surprisingly Starfire and Ice hit every time. Because these spells are rather mana hungry, we had to take turns casting and gaining aggro while the other meditated. We ran him in around a circular pattern under the giant fort until the other was ready to cast again. Having SoW was critical to our sucess, since he hit into the 130s. Hopefully these details will help you to decide the proper way to attempt this yourself.

I was almost able to solo him as a level 52 wizard (had a low level bard (35) in my group for speed, manasong and track when needed).

Just needed to get 2 more nukes off in order to finish him. I tried medding, but he ran off and regained hp too quickly. The bard was is a savior because of the speed.

I tried constantly rooting Gullerback over and over again in the beginning. Ironically I could have finished him otherwise if I saved that mana :(. Of course not one root stuck.

I mainly used my fire DD, best ratio and fire works best on him I heard. Only had one resist; not full resist. Thanks to Extended Range III I was able to kite him.

I'll try him later again when I'm willing to have some excitement and when my bard friend is willing to do it again.

All I have to say is, don't be scared of not being able to kill the wurm, you have this guy to kill first, if he's popped.

Good luck :).

RE: pop loc
# Dec 12 2001 at 10:12 AM Rating: Decent
the pop location is random, but both named wurms seem to pop near enough to the giant fort that if you hunt giants for a while, with a tracker, eventually you'll at least see entalon. in my experience entalon seems to be up a lot (as well as gylton, another named wurm). azdalin however, is a rare spawn, and you can help her along by killing the highest-conning gullerback (a really nasty ape) in the area.

Soloed Azdalin as a druid at 45, had a bub of mana left. Took some time (ensnare wore off so around 15 minutes) but wasn't hard

snare, drifting death, root. I used my warden of tunare necklace so root was free for me. But considering 1 bub of free mana you could have used your most expensive root with little problem =)

After a month of tring to get enough people together to kill Gullarback and get this guy to spawn I gave up. There we a few time where we killed up to 10 Gullarbacks to get this guy to spawn and nothing. Until one day me and a friend was just passing thru this zone and got him on track and killed him. After killing him we headed to go finish quest and was looking at track again and he was there again so we ended up getting 2 of these with out ever killing gullarback. We got both of them right east of the giant fort. So for all of you tring to get gullarback to get him to spawn good luck

You need three scales.

1) Drops off of Azdalin (named wurm in Burning Woods)
2) Drops off of Gylton (named wurm in Burning Woods)
3) Is the "quest guy in Temple Ro" =)

------

So it looks like you have one more named wurm to kill, my friend. The best thing to do is hold a scale in your hand and have a caster (enchanter?) cast "Identify" upon you. Then you will be able to ascertain which scale you are holding (I think it will tell you if it's Azalin's or Gylton's, or the one you got from the Temple of Solusek Ro). Once you determine which wurm is dead, merely go kill the other one for the last scale, then turn them in to Squire Fuzzbin in Firiona Vie. He's a rather pesky pop, as when he does he goes running around and generally attracts the attention of the drachnids in the area. You must keep him alive. But before THAT, you must find and hail a befuddled gentleman named Sir Hobble. And unfortunately, Hobble too is running through the woods with beasties hot on his trail. After hailing Hobble, Fuzz pops - find him. Give him the three scales.

RE: Can a mage solo this ?
# Feb 24 2002 at 7:34 PM Rating: Decent
Yes, a 52 mage can solo this. Use your 51 earth pet and chain cast is the best method to fighting the named wurms. If you have the Luclin pet heal then could do it that way...but chaining pets way more efficient. Also, obviously, char does not work very well on these so would have to revert to using the 44 shock dd. When I hunt here I always chain pets (actually, that is the only way I can seem to solo good blues at 54). Good luck.

I would say definetly. I was takeing out Entalon and Gylton at 52 as an enchanter. And as we all know. Mage pets rock way better then Enc pets. Pet-kiteing was a must for me though. I would estimate HP at 6K and not extremely MR. And like most wurms. Probably heavily fire-based dmg resitant.

Gullers and Wurms
# Aug 09 2001 at 4:00 PM Rating: Default
One thing to note: Gullerback is not a named ape. Gullerback apes are a type of ape that range in level from about, what, 47 to 55? I'm a 45 ranger and when I track, I notice usually two or three blue Gullerbacks and usually a red one. The red one can summon a pet, apparently, and *all* of them have insane hit points and are pretty fierce fighters. I'd venture that the Gullerback apes have more HPs than most of the wurms or giants in the area. As for which Gullerback is a particular placeholder for the named wurm or wurms, I dunno. I'd put my money on the highest level one, obviously. If you have a tracker in the 40's, have him or her track for the red Gullers. Kill them and retrack to see what pops up.

I got dragon scale and wurm scale from Azdalin last night. Wasn't even aware of the quest, it was all just random hunting. I was with a 53 pally and a 52 magician. The wurm was incredibly easy. Didn't seem to hit for much. Went down fast. The Gullerbacks we hunt are probably twenty times scarier. They tend to chase us out of the zone at times.

In any case, I suppose now I'll go for a Wurmslayer, since a third of the deal is done. Will replace my Crystalline Sword, which I have been using in my primary hand. Then I'll be using a Guardian Sword and a Wurmslayer, and I can't complain about that. Anyway, I'm having a blast in Burning Woods. Great place for anyone mid 40's to low 50's.

RE: Gullers and Wurms
# Aug 19 2001 at 12:24 AM Rating: Decent
Ahh, but I disagree. Gullerback is a named mob. I've seen him many times (and only one of him at a time) and killed him anytime I saw him. (He picked the first fight and now he will go down every time I get wiff of him). I've killed this monkey about 15 times now and he has never summoned me, even when he was over lvl 50.

I've also never seen him with a pet, however after a little bit of kiting I have enough adds to seem like he has a few.. . :) and oh yes, he has a ton and a half of hit points.

Gullerback IS the PH for Azdalin. Az doesn't pop all the time, sometimes you get gullerback again and another lovely tattered mantle, but Az will show up eventually. And just for a further note Gullerback is 100% Magic resist, and all the wurms are 100% fire resist. From my personal experience I have had more trouble kiting the wurms, only because it seems they have a longer reach and tend to hit me more, but I spose that is what I get for trying to type and kite at the same time. :) But in most cases when you are not like me and running endless circles the wurms should probably be easier to take down.

Hope this info helps.

When I track and get anywhere from 3 to 10 gullerbacks on track, I pretty much know it's not a named. I've fought two at once (in a group and yes we were chased out)... so I do have to agree to disagree with you on that point. Unless you mean the one or two red ones which are up at any given time. Perhaps they are the ones to which you refer.

For pure melee nastiness - the wurms are far easier in my experience. Gullerbacks have a tendency to simply rip you apart. Casters can't do much.

But good to know gullers are placeholders for Azdalin.

Not neccesarily true - it's possible to have multiples of some Named MoBs. The best example is Grachnist the Destroyer in Warsliks Woods, who's also known as the Iksar Scaled Glove factory.

He's certainly a Named, and I've personally seen multiples of him up simultaneously.

I'm starting all this stuff in Burning Woods, and Leafbringer is exactly right. There's a (possibly named) "Gullerback" who is always bright red to me. There are also any number of blue mobs called "Gullerback" up at any time. These are separate entities. If they were multiples of a named, then the level wouldn't fluctuate so consistently and drastically. The red con is the placeholder, the others are just a pain in the butt. Don't go killin the first Guller you run into - make sure you're fighting the highest con, if you want to spawn Az.

There are regular gullerback apes and then there is Gullerback which is a named ape and the place holder for the worm. Hope this clears things up.
RE: Gullers and Wurms
# Aug 23 2001 at 4:00 PM Rating: Default
To clarify -- there are no "gullerback apes." Gullerback is a named MOB and the PH for Azdalin.

The ape types are "totterback" and "tatterback."
RE: Gullers and Wurms
# Aug 23 2001 at 10:51 PM Rating: Decent
Well, I suppose this is kicking a dead horse, but I didn't want the last word to be wrong. There absolutely ARE Gullerback apes (plural on purpose because there can be several up at any given time) - if you had the gift of tracking you would know this to be true, as I do. In addition, I have fought with a party, no less than TWO Gullerback apes at the same time. My eyes did not deceive me (nor did the damage which chased us out of the woods).

Another above poster is absolutely correct. In addition to these (generally blue but DON'T LET THAT FOOL YOU to a 49 ranger) apes, there is also generally one red Gullerback up. He is apparently indeed a named mob, not necessarily to be confused with the other Gullerbacks. He cons red to my 49 ranger and is the placeholder for Azdalin. I can't imagine how tough he is, as the blue Gullerbacks are hard enough. I posted way up there that he can summon a pet or monster and in that I was truly wrong. I confused what someone had told me in an OOC and what he can do is summon YOU. So I apologize for that ignorant statement.

However, in addition to gullerback apes, you are correct Vaclav. There are also tatterbacks and (not totterback, no such creature, I believe you meant tottering - there are also mouldering apes as well.)

I think that about covers the apes of the Burning Woods - they're all a bit on the ferocious side, but the blue gullerbacks (please don't anyone correct me again on this by saying they don't exist, ENTER the zone with a tracker, have him or her track, ask how many blue gullers are up, and there you'll have the truth... I *promise* - fight several of them at a time if that's what it takes to convince you)...

Anyway. I hope this clears thins up.

I see pallies soloing at level 60 all the time on my server, in fact everytime I step into Fungus Grove I see at least a few of them soloing shrooms and such in there. Pallies are, in my opinion, a very valuable and powerful class. Or have the potential if played right. The spells that they have very well complement each other, and their stuns are invaliable in a group fighting casters. Next time that big, nasty mob you are fighting doesn't CH because of a paly stun make sure to tell the paly that was nice, but you can't solo. He/she can continue the argument where I left off.

I would have to disagree with you on that one. I soloed my pally most of the way to 51, and continue to do so now, when I'm bored. it is quite easy, beat on mob for a while, when low on health, stun, root, back up and heal yourself to full, go back and finish it. LH if all else fails.

RE: Solo?

Trust me, soloing is possible at 45 for a druid. It just takes a LONG LONG LONG time. I soloed an even con wurm at level 45. It would not have been possible without my Elder Spiritist Vambraces. I also found, that firestrike would not land, but lightning base nukes would. The dot would stick too, and I could cast that forever. It took me around 15-20mins to solo the wurm.

I would not recommend soloing wurms at this level for experience. The only reason I did it was to see if I could.
RE: Solo?

Do not use Breath of Ro, its fire based and Wurms are very fire resistant...

Use 49th level root, and then alternate Winged Death DoT and either ES Vambraces or if you do not have vambraces, then cast Drifting Death with WD..

2 49th Roots, and 3 WD + ES Vambraces will send him into run mode.

I have soloed these wurms about 5 times now, and rarly even get hit by them, just stay away and watch out for other wandering mobs..

# Oct 08 2000 at 6:26 PM Rating: Decent
Ok, Chubu has confirmed with a guildmate, ALL 3 Wurms CAN be found in Burning Woods. BUT you can also do that quest to get the Xyfl(whatever) scale. Azdalin IS in fact linked to Gullarback, we went and killed him one time, then Azdalin was up very very shortley after. To do the Xyfl scale quest, give 2 carnelians to the Gargoyle at the OT outpost who is near a hall I think. He gives you a Tekite Gem which is no drop. You then take that gem to Temple of Soulesk Ro, and give to that Lord Somthing of Burwood, and he will give you the scale which is exactly the same one as getting it off the named Wurm.
RE: Once and for all...
# Oct 30 2000 at 7:04 PM Rating: Good
Ok you are partly right but there is a flaw. First of all only two of the named wurms spawn in Burning Woods. Azdalin (Guller is PH) and Glyton (entalon is PH). The third scale is awarded by either killing the named Paladin in the Temple of Solusek Ro or like this:
Get 2 Carnelians and a Peridot. GO to OT and give the 2 carnelians to tektie who is a named gargoyle guard. Take the tektite you get from him to the temple of sol ro and give it and the Peridot to the paladin. He in turn gives you the third scale. Piece of cake.
To finish the quest you must go to firiona vie and find sir Hobble (also a paladin) who only spawns when a goblin battlemaster is killed. To find the goblin exit the city and go left over to the statue, start tracking in that area. There should only be one on track (if any) kill him and Sir Hobble will spawn (not always right away) Sir hobble spawns almost straight out from the bridge so begin your tracking there. If he doesnt get killed he tends to wander over to the tunnel leading the dreadlands. Once you find him, hail him a bunch until his little buddy Squire FUzzbin shows up. Fuzzbin will not stop unless he is fighting so you must give him the 3 scales while he is running which can be hard. If you give him the scales while he is fighting, poof, you lost your wurmslayer.
Hope this helps.

Easier then risking the scales is to have someone either root or mez Sir Hobble to get Squire Fuzzmin to stop running. Then hand in the scales while he is stopped then camp to clear aggro.
Easy enough to do =)
