They are mean
# Jan 04 2004 at 4:45 AM Rating: Decent
Last night only problem was finding some to kill they are random spawns and roam but not to often. Had my 51 dru there and got 2 of them but only coins on them. Took one nuke and gave him all 4 of my dots twice took total of one blue bubble with medding while dots killed. They have some spells i need so will be going back soon. Don't get me wrong they can hit you hard but with my root two times one at start and one at recast they don't break good luck
Good info on fighting them but where are they located?
# May 05 2003 at 1:54 PM Rating: Decent
I'd like to take my 51 Druid here but so far I have not seen a post on where these are located in BW. Are they random spawns that travel the entire zone or located in a certain area?

I've seen them wandering pretty much anywhere south of the giant saucer, but I've never hunted north of it.
Hardest undead MoB in BW?
# Apr 03 2003 at 10:56 PM Rating: Default
So.. what's the hardest undead mob in BW?

Greater War Boned Skeletons seem pretty tough... hit for 117 and kick for 81 (monks, I guess)

How do these and other mobs stack up?

(The harder the better, I'm a Necro with Undead Charm looking for something to tear the undead camp up with)

Sweet for a charming bard

I charmed this ape the other day as a 47 bard... He rocks... I dragged him back to the skele ruins and went on rampage with him!!! Kept recharming and sending him against the skeles and other apes. When they get low on health, wait for charm to break and run circles around your ex-pet and the poor almost dead skele / ape... Chant him to death then re-charm the gorilla... Depending on your mana keep this up telling pet to sit or guard and watch his health regain itself, wait for charm to break, re-charm and send him back in... When you are low on mana, let his health get low then chant kite him to death... Made just over 3 Blue bubs with one gorilla... He dropped a few pp and a saphire which was a nice 95pp bonus... Charm / chant kiting is a most underused bard tactic, it rocks!!!

At level 46, I was Rooting/Rotting these guys with ease - one of the few times I would willingly take on something that con'ed yellow to me, even when I wasn't at full mana! I would sometimes get resists to my fire-based spells and to Root, but with my Warden Symbol of Tunare that was no problem - it never resisted Drifting Death or Ensnare. Unfortunately, the only loot I've been able to get from the couple of dozen I've killed are Wizard Rune's (besides money).

The only problem with these particular mobs in this zone is that there are not enough of them.

Verant has already stated that the best experience for a level 60 character is a steady stream of level 45 mobs. As a necro, these beasties are a bit of a joke even at 56.

Steps to easy solo success for a necro...

Either ignite jboots or pull with darkness (the effect is ultimately the same). I like to do both. Bring mob back to pet.

Engage L49 Pet

Cast Shackle of Spirit (>50% undead slow) and let augmented pet wail on him while you med.

Even slowed, pet won't be able to solo. So when pet is at 50%, resnare and fear. Let him run away at his snared speed, while the pet owns his backside.

Throw a DoT or two for good measure.

At less then 1 bubble tap his sorry butt to replace what you are liching.

Loot mob.

You reduce your chances of additional "problems" by not fear kiting him throughout the zone until you have to. Also, the tougher your pet, the less kiting.

1-Darkness
2-Shackle of Spirit
3-Invoke Fear
4-Splurt
5-Ignite Blood
6-Augmentation of Death/Lich
7-Lifetap
8-Feign Death (just in case)

Mob goes down like Monica.

Ok anyone who says they are easy (3500hp) are wrong, you are refering to either a Tatterback Ape OR a Tottering Gorilla, both are way lower. Other than named these (Tatterback Gorilla) are the toughest of the undead primates in here. They have close to 6000hp and as a 54 SK who easily solo's everthing else in zone including the wurms, I can say that these are the only ones close to giving me trouble. At worst I use HT and go close to OOM. With pet taunt off and JBoots I can run in tight circles until pet finally drops it.

I have a hard time agreeing with you. As a Mage who has been soloing BW for at least half my XP from 51-55, I have to say these are the EASIEST of the top level mobs of their class in the zone. Essentially BW is made up of several escalating classes of mobs, starting in the mid-30s and going up to 46 or 47. These classes are the primates, hornets, sarnaks, skeletons and giants (you can throw wurms in there as well, but I mostly ignore them because they are not efficient, to compare a 47th level wurm in BW with a 47th level gorilla is a joke, maybe our soloing styles are different, but I can kill three of these in the time it takes to kill one wurm of the same level). At any rate, at level 55 I try to focus on the top mobs of each class. That would be the Scoriae Hornets, the Sarnak Zealots, the Greater Warbone Skeletons and the Tatterback Gorillas. For my money, the Tatterbacks use the least amount of mana, do the least damage to my pet, pose the smallest threat to me and drop faster than the other three. Why? Sarnak Zealots are casters, and they are FAST. Forget running away from one, even with jboots. If you mess up, you'd better hope you can get a gate off or you are dead, not to mention they are nasty caters. Hornets are magic and fire resistant, much more than the gorillas. I don't even bother debuffing the gorillas before I nuke them to death, the hornets are a lot hard to damage. The Giants and Skeletons are a close second to the gorillas, but they are more dangerous because they are faster and hit harder. All in all, I'll take the tatterbacks over any other mob in the zone, they are slow, fire tears them apart and they don't beat my pet down with the same ease as a giant or a warbone. They may be the toughest of the primates, but they are the weakest class in the zone and thus the most efficient XP for me.
The facts...

I am hunting at the ruins just east of teh giant fort where skellies of all types pop as well as apes and gorillas. These guys are much easier than the moldering gorillas which have less than 5133 hp's. I am guessing these guys have about 3500 at most. 3 Ice Comets is way overkill...usually 2 IC's and a draught of fire leaves them with asliver of health.
Try not to make the mistake I did.
# Aug 25 2001 at 3:36 PM Rating: Excellent
I attacked one of these by mistake. Beaucoup downtime for a 52 Enc. All I paid attention to was the "tatterback" part. Cause earlier, in a different part of BW I was soloing the apes without much mana loss. They look identical. Then you notice that they are hitting for 110+. They don't seem very magic resitant. But I always pull with Tashinia so that lowers it before I even start applying damage.

I don't recommend attacking these as a 52 Enc. But it is doable. Just be close to FOM and turn pet taunt off if it's not off already. Only way I could win was DD it everytime it turned to whack pet. By the time battle was over all my debuffs except Tashania had faded and pet was dead and I was OOM. Had to root/med a bit to. Couldn't mez as I always had my DoT on it.

No accurate HP info other than ALOT. No noticeable loot but I only attacked and killed one.

This is a side note. But I also noticed something when battleing skels there. I always have a pet up and open with Tashania, Root, Tepid Deeds, Weakness and DoT. Now, when a skel had a weapon in it's hand. It moved very slow, pretty much like it was snared. The combined str loss from Weakness and DoT was enough to slow a normally reg moveing mob down to a crawl as long as they had that 8lb weapon in their hand.

I know. Old news. But what I have seen in discussions is that some people think that almost every mob when weakened and DoT by an enchanter will move at a slowed pace. This is simply not true. I have tested it many times. Even though the mob loses 140 str with 3 spells applied(Weakness, Incapacitate and Gasping Embrace), no movement loss is incured almost 97% of the time.

Solo'd with charmed greater war bone last night, only took 2 fears and 1 mez-recharm to kill as 44 chanter. (He was yellow to me) 1 bub of manna, never got touched. Charm most powerful and underused spell in game

Around 6000 hps on these boys. Loot is around 6pp. Not worth soloing unless you're over level 50 and can smack them with some serious dots.

These apes are pretty tough. They resist spells alot more than the thier lesser brothers. They also have alot more hit points then lesser apes, and they can hit for arouond 119-121 damage.

RE: Easy for Necros to solo
# Feb 10 2001 at 6:16 PM Rating: Default
They Seem to Drop really fast for me. I open up with Splurt (1600 Dam) Root when i get close to where i solo. Cast Bond of Death ( 720 Heal/Dot), Lich, Snare (300 Dam) Envenoum Bolt (1100 Dam) Which will normally break my root. Fear and send in pet. they normally will die by then. If not i just re-snare and fear and it will die really fast. This works well for everything in BW.

Heh if easy for Necros no prob for Shamans either. I'm thinking Root, Mal, T-whatever you have, Ebolt, Plague, When root breaks maybe melee a little and stick pet on him. No prob.

I just killed one, with some help from a friendly Wizard, 'cause at 46 I ran out of mana with it only 1/3 wounded. I figure it had 9000+ HP.
