Playing with my lvl 23 necro (Iskar) in Warsliks, I tried Starwhisp's hint (on my map, it's labeled "Open Valley"). Killed everything for about 2 hours, saw one Skulking Brutling. Killed it with dots and my pet (armed), got shattered choppers. So I wandered north to the small lake, killed all the Iskar Lookouts/Bandits I saw, and BAM, got me a Skulking Brutling with intact choppers! Whoohoo!
"base your searches around loc -2760, 3380. trust me."
worked for me. I killed multiple brutlings in this area over the course of 2 hours and finally got the drop. This was on a ranger (track was very handy)and after not seeing the mob in Frontier Mountains that is supposed to drop the intact brutling choppers after 2 hours of trying to spawn it.
04/30/07 - Killed all goblins around Iksar lake to SW of zone. Brutling spawned after about 20 mins. Killed him unarmed and intact choppers dropped first try. Easy as pie.
excellent info. I ran around this clear area near -2760, 3380, and just killed every mob for about 5 minutes. 1 runtling spawned. killed him. killed a couple more mobs, and a 2nd runtling spawned. killed him, and then a couple more mobs. Then pop goes the brutling! Very happy.
Anyone have any new info on this? been camping em a couple of days now - haven't seen anything stuck at SW corner of fort. Many of em spawn in tunnels to dalnir (nvm turns out those are skulking brute's not brutlings) but no drops intact or otherwise (ok loot tho low end gems and plat). Roamers only pygme so far. Lots of choppers on those hehe.
If you want to save yourself the trouble of running around aimlessly looking for these guys you can sit at -2722, 2053 and one will wander into you and aggro if you're sitting. A bunch more wander the area too within line of vision.
Finally got one to spawn. He popped close to the entrance of the tunnels to LOIO. Maelin server Camped my druid by the bandit lake, jumped on early in the morning. Ran to giant for, killed one Goblin Bonecaster that was stuck in SW corner, turned around and killed a Goblin Hextracer. 2 minutes later the Skulking Brutling popped. But only one on track... Lured him back to bandit lake where i had camped my monk, finished him off and got the Intact Brutling Choppers. Prior to this, i had camped the whole southwest corner of WW, clearing everything, including skulking runtlings that popped 2 at a time. Not once did i get the brutling to pop. Hope this helps, and goodluck... frustration awaits =D
I found 2 standing both along trails. One at loc p1786 n1140 he then started walking south and the other at loc p3178 n2151 looking east. Hope this help ya out
I may have inadvertantly solved the Brutling mystery ... someone posted that they thought the Bonecaster / Witchdoctors were PHers for the Brutlings. I found 7 of them clustered together stuck in the corner of the Giant Fort at loc -1400, 1500. There is just enough room between the two walls and a log pole in the corner for them to get stuck. As soon as I killed all of them ... BAM!!! ... 2 brutlings spawned.
Take that as you will ... but up until I killed these guys I didn't see any brutlings for a good 1.5-2hrs.
Enjoy.

Well I just finished my 5th day in a row of camping every reported Brutling site in WW. Not only did I not find what I desperately needed (dem Intact Choppers..) I totally wasted near a full week. No spawns of ANY wandering MOBs of ANY kind in the entire zone. I think I reported about 10 bugs, from no quest MOBs spawning to not being able to petition a problem they did not think of in advance and provide for in the menus of the new system. (There is no entry for "other problem"). I burnt thru 5 stacks of bone chips trying to keep a pet handy (Could have used them to a much better purpose..)
Someone suggested to me that it might be more pathing / collision problems where they are stuck underground or in the rocks and trees, etc. So we brought in a Ranger to track them. Nada!! In the 2 hours we had the Ranger hunting absolutely no wandering MOBs of any kind. Giants and Goblins posted at the forts, yes. Goblins and Bandits in camps and lookout points, yes. All the "fixed" MOBs were there, but no Goblin Scouts, Watchers, Brutes, etc... Not even a sign of that bloody Goblin Messenger they just added.
Another example of fixing things by breaking the rest of the game worse.
Did this today and got 2 brutlings out of the giant fort wall. Get someone with an AE spell and get as close to the mob as possible. Then nuke with AE and it will bring it out of the wall. Not positive on number that will come out but I got just 1 at a time. Spent 3 days trying to get them to spawn before I thought of this.
Been around 2 years since I camped the Skulking Brutling, maybe they upped his spawn rate or i was just in the wrong place, but i spent around 8 hours in the SW corner of WW, mostly near the bandit lake just south of the OT zone (is where i read somewhere this was the place to find Skulking Brutling), never saw him there and gave up. So i decided to run from there through OT, to FM to find a group for exp in DL, (was in my mid 40's i think, i really slacked off on the shackle quests, and only in the last 6 months did i finish it and get the Tynnonium Shackle) ==>While running south to DL through FM, the Skulking Brutling!! of all things ran right in front of me, was running down the East side of FM and had just passed the LoIO zone. I immediately killed the wanker and had my intact choppers. Thule had smiled upon me =) Since then i have never read or heard anywhere of anyone else getting him in FM, but i swear this is god's honest Truth.
Just an FYI: on January 23, 2004, after about 2 hours of tracking in the SW corner, and killing all the supposed PH, I decided to go near the Goblin Fort, and saw over ten brutlings on track. I killed three with my druid, just in case, and when I got my monk there to loot, all three had intact choppers. All three were a little to the east of the fort, near the water.
Oh, and one I killed with a dot, one with a nuke, and one with melee...so take from that what you will.
Go east of the bandit lake and hunt in the upper portion of valley and on sides of valley... it will spawn. DO NOT USE WEAPONS. USE FISTS ONLY. You will get INTACT choppers if you use FISTS, if you use weapons they WILL be broken.

Forever I search for the endless hours lost playing this wreched game.
Untrue. I think it's entirely random. My ranger was running through Warslik's one day, got a brutling on track, tracked it down, killed it (WITH weapons) and it dropped intact choppers. Sadly, my monk was in HK and there was nobody else in the zone, so it rotted away.
Killed 2 Brutes. 1 with weapons, received shattered choppers, one with just fists, received intact choppers. Took 20 min. Killed Outrider and Skirmisher beforehand.
I've done this shackle twice now, soon to be 3 or 4 times. (Got my Shackle of Tynno and Whistling Fists)
The first time through, I went around killing brutelings with my weapons in hand. I got 13 shattered choppers. Getting severely frustrated, I started looking around, to see if it was a rare drop. I saw someone mention that you had to kill them hand to hand. I took off my weapons, and the very next one dropped intact choppers. Coincidence? Possibly.
Second time through, unequipped weapons, first kill, intact choppers.
Keep in mind the second time through I was level 54ish, so my normal h2h damage was fairly high.
Maybe it's unrelated, but why not try it anyway? It might just save you a 3-hour camp-fest, and if not, then you lost nothing by trying it ;)

as mentioned earlier ... there is a valley -1800 +2800 it stretches until the giant fortress. there is a small hill from north to south inside the valley. this is the exact spot where they spawn. i run back and forth inside the valley (not so much tree lag there ;) and killed everything in sight. ph are goblin outriders and witchdoctors i think. only after i killed one of those a brutling spawned. also if you get bored you can make a roundtrip through the giant fortress. it took me around 7h to get the intact ones. also it does not matter how hard you hit. engaged 2 with bare hands, and the last one with staff of shielding and steel ulak. first two had chattered, last one intact. i should mention, that i saw one at 3500 -2000 between the goblin hut and the iksar hut. tried two camp there for a while, went back and forth between these two and got good exp and pp. if you need the sparring gloves then there is a good place to look for the pitfighter and the brutling. if you are around level 20-25, otherwise go to the goblin fortress at higher levels.
only thing i need now is the sash of a young ronin, i will let you know if i find one ;) good luck to all the shackle of rock seekers

Caution until you're sure, and then a little more caution.
I did the bandit lake thing, it is at -1500, 4000. Just ran around and killed any Goblins I saw and got two skulking brutlings to pop within a half hour. The second one had the intact choppers. Both were found a bit south and east of the lake.
i zoned in WW with my monk and a ranger friend and he tarcked 3 at teh ZL on a hill by FoB but they were all underneath the world and i have been here for 20 hours and its starting to piss me off/sigh i kill raster in 20 minutes although he is a 80hour+ camp but i cant get a little 12ish mob to spawn without being underground i have already petitioned and /bugged hehe GL all fellow monks 54th Disciple Gilgosai Kobushi of The Nameless server
Been going after the Skulking brutlings for a few days now, and have tried a few things: First, the wolf hunters and stalkers and the goblin bonecasters and wichdoctors seem to be on the same spawn table. Second, i have tried the only DOTing it, and meele, both times nothing droped. most of these mobs seem to be between the overthere zone and the giant fort.
followed other posts for a while but couldnt see any thing that caused him to spawn. killed one in the valley after a while but not sure what caused it to spawn and another one at the wall at the giant fort but both were shatted choppers. (About 6 hours on this) Started to kill all the goblins around the Bandits Iksar Lake and one spawned south east of the lake not far from the lake. Tracked it down with the Druid and though I would not hit it this time so I got the druid to root it then dot it with drifting death. Looted and yes "intact choppers"
If you're doing this without track, another place you can check for these pests is near the lake with the exiled iksar, just up the hill a ways. It appears there's a number of mobs that get stuck here when left to their own devices. The location is roundabout neg 1150 by pos 4100. When I've looked, several of them have been skulking brutlings. I'd still suggest bringing track, however, as you may be settling in for the long haul.
As for the type of weapon determining the drops... just another superstition, fortunately. =P Thought it would be kind of neat... no, you can't get a high quality fur after fireballing a wolf. ;) Seriously, though, the drops are determined at spawn time, not death time.
Look, its the most retarded thing i've ever heard to say oh if you use weapons it gives you shattered choppers.....nothing is like this, nothing. My monk has been using 2hb since he was lvl like...5 and at the time of killing this he had a tarmok battlestaff equipped. First kill was intact bruteling choppers. So there you go, the times it happened it was coincidence as most monks at this lvl wouldn't have had weapons usually i would imagine.
just to clear some posts, there are brutlings in the tunnelways to dalnir that make it seem there trapped under the world about 4-6 of them, you can either find them there or near the upper lake is best spot too, plus it is best to kill them h2h used a weapon and got shattered ,used h2h and got the intact item everytime
Ok i zoned in from ot with a ranger guildie he saw it on track right away didnt think to write down the loc but comming from the ot zoneline we stayed high on the hill and ran to the right. found it with 6 goblins with him dropped the jawbone 1st time.
What i did, and without a tracker, was to get this to spawn 3 times (was up when i zoned in makes 4) by killing everything that roamed around Iksar Bandit Lake and the valley mentioned in many post. The Brutling popped twice on the lake and once in the valley. The first 3 kills were the pops on the lake. All 3 of those had the shattered choppers, so i decided to put away my Peacebringer for the next spawn and go h2h. The 4th spawn was in the middle of the valley just over the hill from the lake, he dropped intact choppers, not sure if h2h had much to do with it, but i did get them after 3 times killing him and doing mass damage. I advise anyone doing this to get sow potions..the mobs run pretty fast in all directions once you have them about dead and sow was very useful to get to mobs fast and kill them. Now, I also read on many posts how the runtlings are not on the same spawn table..I disagree. The spawn site next to the lake spawned 1 runtling in place of a bruting, and the valley runtlings also spawned in place of a brutling, but so did the witchdotors, hunters, etc.. So go kill every roamer in close prox. to lake and valley and you are garunteed multiple pops..i did and had no problems. I hope this posts helps.
I've been using my 60 Ranger to track these the last couple days, and 99% of the time they either spawn or wander under the world. I spent a 7-hour overnight session (no one in the zone) tracking, there were 3 up the whole time but all were under the world. Next day, log in, only one up, bam got him. Day after that, none up for like 5 hours, one spawns, and he's under the world again. They really gotta fix these spawns.
Each time I found an under-the-world brutling, it was under that ridge of land that separates the FoB zone from the main area of WW. It was the take a step, oops he's behind me, take a step, now he's in front of me deal. Could not target with F8 even though he was the closest thing on tracking and I was supposedly standing right on him.
Regarding placeholders mentioned in other posts - I find that goblin bonecasters are themselves under the world in many cases. I haven't been able to find many accessible ones to kill. Same with hunters. Occasionally I'll be able to nab one but this zone has some serious spawn issues.
Anyone have any evidence to support the claim that runtlings could be PHs? Sure are enough of those on track at all hours of the day.
have you tryed heading into the hidden tunnel to dalnir? there are plenty of brutes of various types that spawn in there, not quite sure if this critter is one of them, but your story about them being below ground helps support my thoughts of them being on the spawn tables for that cave system. hope that helps some. 8)
Killed mine on the SW corner (outside) of the forest giant fort (-1300,+1600). This is also a good spot if you're looking to kill gobbies as there are 2-3 game trails where mobs run up the slope from the west and into the SW wall of the giant fort. (They get "stuck" on the wall for a few seconds allowing you to quick target and pull.)
Ignore the myth about only killing with dots or with h2h weapons... the intact choppers are simply rare (although I got one on my first kill).
One possible place to setup camp is on the flat area outside the West side of the forest giant fort, near the river at -840,+1850. I sat there for maybe 5-10 minutes without getting jumped by anything.
I read the post about the valley at n1700,2700. I also read the post about the possible bonecasters being a PH and here are my findings.
I did this with my lvl 54 druid for tracking abilities.
Day one camping the valley I got nothing.
Day two I was camping the valley And nothing was running through it, I decided to track bonecasters, So I started tracking one and it took me to the western zone wall on the same level as the valley. THERE IS A HUGE PATHING ISSUE HERE. I saw about 20 goblins turning in circles because they all were trapped on the wall. A number of bonecasters as well as other types of goblins were stuck. So I broke out Upheaval and AE'd them. All dead in one cast. Immediately a skulking brutling spawned. This leads me to believe that some type of goblin is definitely a PH, most like bonecaster as you will see in day 3. I tracked the brutling, beat him down with my scimmy and got shattered choppers.... damn
Day 3. I show up and check the wall again. Nothing is stuck. I go back to the valley and start killing bonecasters and skirmishers. A brutling pops on track. He spawned just south of the valley at n2200, 2700. Thinking that maybe the soft kill, hard kill thing had some merit, I just used the epic dot and watched him rot. Intact choppers.
Summary and Conclusion:
Bonecasters are more than likely a PH. The Valley located at n1700, 2700 is the place to kill them. As for hard kill/soft kill -- Seeing as how I only killed 2 brutlings I do not think that there is enough evidence to make a conclusion. It could very well be totally random, which I believe it to be seeing as how this is a monk quest and monks can not soft kill anything.
I really hope this info helps someone as I know it is hard to find info on these posts that is solid between all the rants and raves.

Well a little update, I zoned in to WW from FoB yesterday and sure enough, one of these guys was on track. so they spawn in SW and NE corners it seems.
I dotted him and intact choppers, shouted to monks. So everytime I use a dot intact, one time I use a scimmy, shattered.
good analysis except, killed a brutling as 21 beastlord beating the heck out of it. Shattered choppers. at 41 i killed another one and got intact. this leads me to believe that its just random. and the one you hit with a scimmy probably fallen down on a rock earlier or something.
After hunting the Brutlings for several hours here's is what I found.
It appears the brutlings are on the same spawn table as the Stalker/Hunters and Bonecasters/Witchdoctors. They all spawn in the SW Corner with the Goblins up near the lake.
If you kill enough rounds of these you will eventually get a Brutling to spawn.
I killed four before getting the intact choppers. Even tried the dismiss pet "trick" once with no sucess.
You will most likely need to be very lucky or have a tracking friend to help with the spawns.
Evidently those wacky guys at Verant decided to change a few things, most notably for begining Iksar monks would be the evident name change of the Skulking Bruteling to the Pygmy Skulking Brute. Granted maybe I'm smoking something illegal while I post this, but the pygmy drops both shatterd choppers and intact choppers (sounds familiar, huh?) going to try this theory out, but after many hours of camping these w/ a druid doing the tracking and seeing NO brutelings...

Alot of you who say they're spawning under the world.. did you realize they happen to spawn in the Tunels to Dalnir as well.. therefore it'd appear as if they're spawning under the world.. just a thought.
I believe you are talking about Skulking Brutes. Those are different from Skulking Brutlings. The Skulking Brutlings are level 12ish. The Skulking Brutes are in the 20s. Also, I saw a Skulking Brutling today in WW. I probably saw him in an unusual location, but nevertheless, he was in the south central part of the zone. Sort of in between the giant fort and bandit lake, but a little more south. Anyways, he conned blue to my 13th level necro. Dot'd the Brutling a couple of times and stuck my pet on him. No drop though. Back to wandering the Woods some more...

I've been trying to get the intact choppers with no luck. I logged my druid to track them but there seems to be a bug. When I track them they aren't at the spot I track them down to, I move one step forward and it says they're behind you and one step backwards and it says there in front of you. :/ I read below and someone mentioned them being underground can this happen? Or am I tracking the ones near Dalnir (actually I think they are ravaging brute) does anyone have any insight on this? I petitioned and the Guide said ooooohhh tracking is working and it is reserved for Rangers, sorry but WTF? I gave up on him thinking maybe he's a new guide. Well any help is most appreciated.
Well I finished the quest today. Here's what I did and not sure which is the key to the spawn but I logged my druid on to see if the 3 skulking brutlings were still underground and oohhh yeah they were and from the best I could figure only one other spawns but this one never had the Intact choppers. I petitioned a GM but got no responce and after waiting a while I logged my monk and decided I'd try kill the gobbies at the sticking point by the bandit lake killed them and nothing. So I decided I'd get a little exp and kill the Iskars at the Iskar lord spawn spot killed them for awhile got the Scaveging Bracer and decided to make one last loop by the bandit lake to see if anything was there and low and behold by the waterfall nearest the lake I saw a skulking brute killed him and got the intact choppers. I really believe chacing the other skulking brute that was northeast of the lake was a waste of time I headed by the valley at -1800,+2800 I think it is and saw a brute killed him and only a shattered chopper well good luck to all.. Got the copper bracer also today thank god that one is easy..a nice change..
Got lost returning to FoB after getting bored waiting for the pit fighter to spawn. Stumbled across a brutling, smacked him, dropped the intact choppers. Couldnt believe my luck. Mow all I have to do is work out how to pop the pitfighter in a camp I cant clear solo.
Today as i was running through WW, with my druid, and decided to check track for brutlings. 3 were on track. when i killed 1 with DD and a little melle at the end it dropped intact choppers. so i logged on my monk and ran over to where the corpse was but it already decayed. So i logged druid again checked track, and seen a runtling and 2 brutlings. i tracked them brought em to were monk was logged and killed em, second dropped another intacted. to sum it up I camped at about neg1436 pos3824 and got 3 on track, doesnt matter how hard you hit em, and im pretty sure runtlings are there PHs.
I tried the "running between W Cab and OT zones" for 10 hours with no luck.
Within 5 minutes of setting up camp in the valley at neg 1700-1800, pos 2700-2800, one walked by. As I engaged him with my 2 Fighting Batons and Tail Rake, another walked by. The first one dropped nothing, so I found the second and engaged him. He dropped shattered choppers. I looked a round for a minute and saw one drop from the sky. Engaged him and he dropped the intact choppers.
Moral of the story... 1. camp him in the valley at neg 1700-1800 pos 2700-2800 2. how hard you hit him does not matter.
I had a druid friend track the skulking brutlings. What luck there were three of them up in range but as we tracked each one down they were all underneath the world. Had to petition and do the old boring camp for the GM to spawn. I got a guide that said he cleaned up all the stuff under the world after which we kileed the skulking brutling. By the way if you are facing out from cabilis and follow the zone line to the right for about three minutes that is were they were under the world and when the GM "fixed them" they popped a small ways off of the zone line. Hope this helps.
On Feb 7th (my birthday btw) this information was posted. I am reposting it, because the guy was right on. We followed his lead and got them on the first try..WHEN THE MONK WAS LOGGED ON. It didn't work when only my bard was hunting. More on that after Gribble's notes.
Gribble says:
To get the intact chopper head directly west from the cabilis entrance until you get to location neg (1700-1800) pos (2700-2800). Kill everything that you see in this deep cut valley. The "skulking brutling" is what you are after. This critter drops two different items, one is a smashed chopper and looks like bone chips, this is NOT what you want, you need the "intact brutling chopper" this looks like a lower jaw bone. The other shackle quest item is the "pit fighter sparring gloves" these can be found on a pitfighter which spawns in a set of ruins on one of the paths exiting the goblin camp (the ruins are the first set you come to and has just 1 mob in it), the exact location is pos 2300 neg 150, the mob that spawns is on a cycle, it respawns every 7 mins or so, just keep killing it till the pitfighter spawns (i had to kill a warrior and a battlemaster before the pitfighter turned up), as far as i know they always drop the gloves. Lots of people call this a hard quest, as soon as i knew where to look for these critters i camped the mobs in less than 1 and a half hours!
I hope this helps...

Ok, here are our two cents worth:
The monk and I were together for the skulking brutling. He was about level 23 iksar and I was a 25 halfelf bard. We went to the rock Gibble described and looked down into the valley. The monk spotted the brutling immediately and we were off in a heartbeat. Monk began immediate attack. Knowing from experience that loot drops are affected by what is attacking/damaging mob, I didn't attack, but ran my heal song and buffs only. He went down fast and the intact choppers were dropped. Weehoo.. Makes up for that awful camp of the sarnak courier. No it doesn't. That was horrendous.
Monk logged. I then went over to the location for the mob that drops the glove to do some pre-hunting scouting. I killed mobs off for about 4 hours and the pit fighter never spawned. I DID a lot of shaman quest spawns.. hmmm. mi caster su caster? Be careful if you do this alone. There are wandering warriors and battlemasters that walk through this ruin at very in opportune moments AND an occasional caster. Killed me right off. Took a chance and went back with Monk next day and the little @#$*(# was standing right there. Grrrrr. Let monk kill again, using only heals and buffs and the gloves dropped first time.
I hope this gives you a little more insite into this part of the shackle of rock quest.

These brutes and that bleeping creeper cabbage were driving me nuts (still haven't found the creeper). So, I logged on my druid and had him look around the woods and the swamp to find the spawn points of these guys. There always seems to be a few brutes up at all times, but they wonder and move surprisingly fast. Also, one other problem with them is that the pathing in the woods is bizzare. If you try to pull them, don't be surprised if they decide to take the scenic route. All in all, it helps if you can find someone with tracking to hunt these guys down for you. I'll try to get my druid back there sometime. I wouldn't mind figuring out the spawn time for the brutes, just so I can post it for future referance.
