The red cockatrice feathers are used to make Fine Steel Armor Dye. Shamans use them to make the dye.

Could the feather dropped by these guys be used by certain casters for spell research?
It's my understanding that Int casters use a feather in a research quest to increase their skill, maybe this feather increases their chance of gaining in their skill.
Just a thought, maybe some one could try it out to see next time they use the quest for skill practice.

Was in dl just outside cave one blue from 41 and i saw one of these suckers run by so malise and i casted once and healed pet. went down pretty fast thanks to ds on pet. got some feather off it it's no drop no clue what it's for. Easy exp is just sit outside opening and pull yeti and anything else that walks by. Dinged 41 and stayed for a couple hours and picked up two yellows. Crack would have been nice but i'm not complaining. Kill these and kill a lot they are easy exp for mages.

I recongnized these things from all them Dungeons and Dragons stuf i had. I was afraid they'd turn me to stone but unlike D&D they don't do that.
Also in the Beholder maze there aren't any beholders just evil eye. Am i ever thankful there ain't no real beholders in the game.
the cocatrix, stonegazer
# Jul 21 2001 at 6:06 PM Rating: Default
Ok these cocatrix a basic warrior type monster. No magical stun ( but still normal stun ), hit for 66 to 85 depend on its level, they are a lile slower than a tiger or a sarnak and have a good load of Hps. They have poor magic, fire and poison resist but good cold resist ( wonder why ... ). Easy to solo for a caster type ( cept cleric ) but non well equiped tank could have probleme soloing this before 42 or so.

I have gotten coins from these (not sure where they keep them but then) and that NO DROP feather (to be destroyed like all the Kunark crap) and after many, many kills I got a single (stackable) cockatrice egg. It's a meal. Any idea if it can be used for anything but eating?

cockatrice

Encyclopædia Britannica Article

also called Basilisk, in the legends of Hellenistic and Roman times, a small serpent, possibly the Egyptian cobra, known as a basilikos (“kinglet”) and credited with powers of destroying all animal and vegetable life by its mere look or breath. Only the weasel, which secreted a venom deadly to the cockatrice, was safe from its powers.

By the beginning of the 17th century more marvels had been added to the legend. The snake was said to be generated from an egg laid by a **** and hatched by a serpent. In addition to the weasel, another enemy was the ****; if the basilisk heard a **** crow, it would shortly die. Thus travelers in regions allegedly infested by the basilisk took ***** with them.

...so she didnt make it up.. well I'll be damned

It filters out the "cockatrice" part of this mob's name. How ludicrous is that?

My good friend Alussus (37 druid soloist) takes these down almost non stop. Snare combust twice then dot and wait for it to kick the bucket. Loot is 1pp to 5pp and the beaks sell in WC for 1.5pp also drops odd black pearl or emerald so nice all round.

what a cockatrice is
# Aug 26 2000 at 9:36 AM Rating: Default
Its a D&D(Dungeons and Dragons) monster.
The Cockatrice turns you to stone with his beek.
quite a monster...he cant pierce metal tho so just keep him away from your skin..wait, this isnt D&D...this is everquest..but thats where it came from.
RE: what a cockatrice is
# Sep 03 2000 at 2:58 PM Rating: Decent
Actually, the Cockatrice is a general fantasy creature, orginating not from D&D, but somewhere else (India, I believe). And Cockatrice use their tail (which is usually a snake) to petrify people.

It's actually the result of hatching a ****'s egg on a dung heap by a toad (old english mythology). They are deathly afraid of weasels and can be killed by a rooster's crowing. If a nine-year-old cockatrice lays an egg and it in turn is hatched by a toad on a dung heap the result is a basilisk. A serpent with a dragon's head on its' tail that is able to kill with its' gaze. These too were afraid of weasels and could be killed by roosters crowing (travelers in midievel England and France carried weasels and the knights on the crusades took roosters with them to the Holy Lands).

ah i can just see it now..

the brave knights of lore, platemail polished to a blinding shine, proudly wielding their rooster in one hand, and weasel in the other.

where do the rooster and weasel drop in eq? are they both either hand? i wouldnt mind dual-wielding a rooster/weasel combo for some good ol' fashioned toad-hatched **** fightin.

I haven't killed many, but the ones I have killed have never cast anything or stunned (outside of powerful hits). It would seem likely that the cockatrice would be similar to the lowland basilisks, but as far as I could tell, they do not have that same property.

If they do you dont get a messege of them casting or anything like that, but if they do its an insta stun to knock you out of casting. But have not seen them stun before. Before I got in a group and started killing them I thought they would have a stun spell to. Oh well happy they dont but they hit for 80+. And often dubble attack.
