These are now used in the quest Blessed Impressions, which is the updated quests for cultural armors (as of Secrets of Faydwer). This quest has you kill 20 froglok Gaz in Upper Guk, and make impressions of the froglok Gaz head patterns (5). Kill 10 a crag spiders in East Karana and make impressions of the crag spider carapaces (2). These impressions will show up in your Blessed Impression Book which was given to you by Vuro Padfoot in Shar Vahl. Not sure if this is the same for other races.
This is for the Blessed Cultural Symbols for the Simple Vah Shir cultural armors.

After completing the tasks, it says to deliver the Impression Book to an artisan of your race. So my guess is, that this will be the same quest for all Blessed Symbols.

I would think that a Enchanter with their wits about them would be able to make short work of these by doing the following:

Charm a Griff or another Spider

Slow the Target Spider

Sick the pet against it until it is dead then use pet until almost dead and kill off the pet getting exp for both kills.

When I return to EK I intend to test this for real. If done properly it should be very good exp.

Today, I was hunting in EK with my ranger farming silk. There were 4 or 5 spiders on tracking and dozens of lions and snakes. The zone crashed and was reset. Whne I got back in, about 5 mins later, my tracking showed about 90 spiders, no snakes and 4 or 5 lions. This was proof enough for me that the snakes and lions are both PHs for the spiders. So, if you are hunting the spiders, kill the snakes and lions too, to improve your haul.

Good hunting to you.

As you enter the plains of EK from the east (Highhold side), there is a large hill just to the south of the road. Lots of snakes, wolves and lions, and a few spiders and reavers populate this hill.

I killed these for a couple of hours on Povar this morning. these along with the carrion crawlers got me 160 silks total. quite nice if you need to make silk items. The dropped 4 silks commonly, sometimes id get 6, once i got lucky and all of 8 dropped. i also got quite a few poisin sacks, not bad for selling if i can find some rouge that may want them...

I spent about 6 hours farming these the other day and never got more than 4 silks. The best take I got was 4 silks and 2 poison sacs.

I'm wondering if the drop rate has been reduced along with the addition of new tailoring recipes... Has anyone gotten more than 8 silks since the most recent patch?

or, it could have been level 20. Mobs that are 1 level higher than yourself and those that are 2 levels higher than yourself both con yellow.

green = substantially below your level
lt blue = a fair distance below your level, but you will still get some xp from the kill
dk blue = at least 1 level below you
white = your level
yellow = 1 or 2 levels above you
red = 3 or more levels above you

The spread on level ranges for green, lt blue, and dk blue vary with the level of the player.

However, yellow is always 1 OR 2 levels above you.

So, the person who said that they were going back in another level to see how they con was logically deducing the actual level of the spiders.

I would have thought that a level 60 druid would know this, or at least have gamed enough to have learned tact and common courtesy.

Spent an evening killing these with a ranger buddy, wound up with 41 silks at the end. From time to time they dropped nothing, but most of the time it was 2-3 silks. Got about 7 spider legs and 3 venom sacs in that time. Got 4 silks from one, 6 from another, and 8 from another.

So you can still get lots of silk from a single crag spider, you just have to kill a bunch of them.

They're blue to my troll SK at 21, but they still hit him pretty hard, have descent hitpoints and thier poison is no joke - 8 or 10 points of damage per tick and fairly long lasting and I've got good poison saves.

Silk rates have been gone down though - most I've seen is 6, usually 2 or 4 and even get empties. Poison sack drops have gone up though - usually every other one and have even had multiple drops on the same spider - made my rogue buddy's day when I pulled three off of the same spider. (told you they were very poisonous)

Tired of killing giant spiders that don't drop silk? Wish I'd heard about these babies a long time ago. Easy kiting for my lvl 26 druid but should be doable by any caster with decent mana and a good dd spell. The ones I killed were conning blue to me so that argues that they go higher than level 20.

I'm a level 20 shaman, and have been soloing these at 19 and 20. I don't get a full blue bubb of exp, more like half a bubb, maybe Verant nerfed the exp too. The drop rate is normally two, sometimes zero, and once six (!) silks. They've never killed me, although if the fight is tough and the poison hits it's sometimes a close thing before I get a chance to mem my cure spell and cast it three times. My strategy is affliction from a distance to lure them (it's a slow casting spell), then tainted breath, then melee, and mix in spirit strike or frost rift if they aren't going down fast enough. I usually use half my mana, and normally I've still got half to 3/4 of my HP left when the fight is over.

Must be this zone has exp bonus or something...

Fought gorge hounds solo from about 19-21, almost full blue bub for each one.

Now, lvl 23 and back soloing the spideys for exp and silks. At lvl 23, get almost a full blue bub of exp for each one.

Tactic is to fight one, kill it, wait for poison to leave me, bandaid to 50%, rest till have 3 bubs health or a smidgeon more, then fite another. Only once got in a jam from adds, but if you are careful, melee classes can really benefit from these guys -- I know I am!! Gonna try to get to lvl 24 fiting them. There is no doubt Verant has nerfed the drop rate on these. I've killed hundreds of them while skilling up tailoring to cured silk trivial level. They currently drop from 1 to 6 silks, and only drop about 50% of the time. I probably average 2 silks per spider. Still good, but not what it once was, clearly.

Personally, I kill all the Carrion Spiders in the zone before starting in on the Crags. I average about the same number of silks, a kill takes about 10 seconds (level 29 Monk), and I also get Halfling Parts to use in Baking. Typical Verant to screw the zone drop up so that it's better for a level 29 to hunt a low-level MOB than a higher one.

I agree with all those who say these things are great experience. I leveled from 21 to 23 on these guys pretty fast. Would have come here sooner if I had known about them.

But, I am now level 30 (druid btw) and to break the hell level boredom up a bit I am working on my tailoring. I came back here for silks because I regularly looted 4 to 8 silks here. What surprised me is that at level 30 these guys still occasionally put up quite a fight. They all con green, but some are high enough green to give me experience.
RE: Max level 20??? I don't think so!
# Mar 24 2003 at 12:04 AM Rating: Excellent
Yeah, I was still getting light blues when I was level 27 and once I got level 28 they are finally all green. With that my calculations tell me they max out at 22 not 20, not to mention the very effective poison.

Great for farming silk and venom sacks. Out of 47 Crags the average was 2.5 silks, .2 legs, .4 v sacks, and .1 for words and runes per kill, using my Excel spreedsheet.

My mistake, you need 4 to 5 lightning bolts to take this down and that leaves you with 2 to 3 roots to cast with 142 INT at level 19.

You will have difficulty with the Crags as a Wiz at 18. Go back to N. Karana and fatten up on Borer's and Griffawns. At 19, Borers and Griffs still give good ep. But nothing compared to Crags. Almost a full blue bar per kill.

Same old trick of root and nuke but as for your mathematical manna bubble. Make sure you have Resistant skin on which increases poison resistance in case the crag gets close enough. Against a single crag, you have enough manna to cast root on it 4 times and 1 partial or complete resist on your lightning bolt with 142 INT before you go oom. Please adjust if you have lesser INT. Laugh if you have more. since Crags for some reason, even though they don't resist root, they break of off it faster than any mobs at this level.

At 19, I am able to blast away for the full damage of the Lightning bolt at 123 dmg. So 3 bolts and a Lightning shock takes care of it. Fight shouldn't last for more than 15 seconds.

Once you make 20, go back and get your new spells... Now you can Teleport... Weeee.

I just started hunting crags mainly for their silks, but I have not had much luck with the drops. So far, the maximum number of silks I have obtained from crags is 2. Carrion spiders, on the other hand, have had up to 5 silks at a time, with the average being 2 to 3 silks.

Am I just having bad luck with the random silk generator or what?

As for my experience fighting the crags, they hit hard, sometimes up to 42 points. The poison is pretty harsh, but thanks to having two druids in my group doing nothing but heal, heal, heal, I've never dropped below half my HP's. Melee always have a good healer or two handy if you want to take on the crags. I would suggest not starting on them until one reaches 16.

Melee can take!
# Feb 21 2001 at 9:46 PM Rating: Decent
We all know the mage can easily get these things and beat them with little to no problem, but you also hear if you are a melee type, just run and hide. That isn't the truth though, I took these guys from lvl 20-23 (and mostly solo).
I was a warrior wearing full bronze with two rings each giving +75 life -10 sv Magic and some crappy earrings giving +2 STA each. I was dual weilding Thul Claws and a PGT. The poison almost never hit me (not sure why), but even when it did, It took away at most 40 from almost 900 HP and though It was a long (and usually semi-close) fight, I would win unless he would get help (those damn Gnolls come to mind along w/ Lions).
Every now and then I would group with a rogue who would use a Slime Coated Harpoon and we would take him down relativly fast.
*(A small tip with these guys, they seem to not even care about how much damage you do, but what your high crit it. I found I could actually easier taunt this guy off if I was using my 2HS a Shiny Brass Halberd!)
Mages, Wizzies, and Necros can speed things up alot when killing them, but they aren't essential. If you are a tank/monk find a good rogue, and the vise versa if you are a rogue. I think 2 rogues would also be good (just take turns backstabbing and sharing aggro). If you can find a cleric though, take him...they make the battles ALOT easier.
Another thing I found was if you take these things next to the named gnolls when you are in trouble, the Gnolls will actually start killing the spiders for you (provided you are able to get in and out of their aggro range fast).
Hope I helped some melee types with this, good Battles to you all
Crags are IT
# Nov 24 2000 at 3:22 PM Rating: Excellent
I dont know if I have gone into this ENOUGH.. it just seems that this is one of those gold mine mobs that EVERYONE has to try.
Now note I make no guarantees of the fighting style of these things vs different classes. I personally play a mage and therefore SWEAR by these things. This also applies to SOLO... I dont group very often so I have developed something of a rapport with these things.

1. Melee Classes. Don't bother. By the time you can take one down with pure melee they will give you no xp. Just keep running :) If you are foolish enough to take one, be prepared to die quickly. The poison is extremely strong and they hit in the 38-50 range.

2. Druids can finction fairly well against them I have seen lvl 20 druids kiting them across the fields.. it can be done.. you just have to make sure you arent kiting past something that will attack.. the critters here are always looking for a brawl it seems and will not hesitate to join a fight. Most notorious are those damn lions.

3. Wizards. Mmmm.. honestly dunno...I have seen wizards that own these things and wizards that, well.. dont :) the latter last about 3 and a half minutes before dying of the poison on their way to the zone.

4. Mages and Necs. These damn things are TAILOR MADE for you. I have only seen ONE nec die to one and that was because Broon stepped on his pet. Fear kiting is extremely effective with these things.. I dont play a nec but I always see them kiting these things. As with any kiting tho.. major drawbacks are assists and an increased level of aggro when they break fear. Mages: WATER PET WATER PET WATER PET. There is NO other way to solo these, by what I have seen / experienced. The earth pet comes CLOSE but is still very susceptible to the poison and the regen rate on these is pathetic. Try healing one and then you are oom. Here is how I kil these things. I am now lvl 25 and have been almost consistently hunting these things since lvl 20. Trust me the xp is GOOD. :

I find a good isolated crag.. whether or not I have sow, I nuke it once, having left my pet parked at the bottom of the ramp to HK. I use either 24 Bolt or 24 Shock. I use shock if its uphill since bolts are huge gas guzzlers and notorious for missing targets on inclines. When the spider gets pissed I turn tail and run to my pet. Sic pet. Wait for the taunt message. Nuke again. Wait for the taunt message. Nuke. At this point, doing 154 - 158 dmgs per nuke, the spider starts to walk off. Sit and med. let pet finish. Or if you want to see that Im not a liar, bring up your inventory screen and watch a noticeable jump in your xp when your pet finishes off the spider. Loot, med for a few and repeat. The reason I dont mention heals is because if done right, the pet should never fall below 75% hp. The regen rate is the best on the water pet as well as the fact he is immune to poison. By the time you get the half bar of mana you spent on the spider, the pet is ready to go again. A fire shield is a nice addition but not necessary. I forget to fire shield it a lot and havent noticed any real lag.

Major dangers for mages. 1 is to get cocky and nuke the @#%^ out of the spider BAD MOVE. If those buggers aggro on you, I usually backpedal in a circle so that my pet hits enough to aggro it back on. I call this, lovingly, "mage kiting" :) Also if this happens, rather than run AWAY like a fool which many people do.. run THROUGH the spider, making sure your pet is never out of reach. You have to give the pet a chance to cause dmg before it will aggro on you. In my opinion, you should NOT fire shield yourself.. despite popular opinion. Fire shields only aggravate the target more and will make it that much harder to aggro off you. Malise is not needed.. I have only had one spider EVER resist a 24 dd... how this happened I havent the slightest.. to be on the safe side I alternate between fire based and steel based nukes.

I honestly cant think of any other classes that can effectively figth these, but the again I dont play any other classes.. I have heard mixed opinion from chanters.. some think they are cool, others feel limited by their substandard pets :) However you fight is up to you. I only speak from experience and I have to say.. 5 levels and counting off these buggers.. I must be doing something right :)

my bst smacks these things like there's no tomorrow. cure poison at 15, endure poison at 22... make sure both you and your pet have endure on, and go at it. sometime's i'll let the pet focus on it and just keep him poison free with cure, and sometimes we'll attack at the same time and i'll keep the aggro on me so i only have to cure myself to save mana. just depends on if i have more mana or hp at the time.

Enchanters put a whipping on these with sow potions and charm.

A charmed griffawn with quickness can take down 2-3 slowed crags very fast.

Otherwise match up two crags against each other: Make sure your pet barely wins then invis to break charm and finish your pet off for 2 kills.

I too am a mage, and given these helpful comments I'm gonna head for a few crags before I take it to High Pass Keep.

It seems that mages tend to specialize in the poison foes (Asps, Dune Tarantulas, Crag Spiders) due to the fact that a Water Elly doesn't give a rip about poison. This means that the higher experience you get for poison targets is like a freebie, since poison is no issue for us.

These spiders just look like the big brothers to the spiders on the island at erudin's crossing. Those spiders there had some pretty vicous poison, compared to what they con. My lvl 15 shaman couldn't even kill one that conned green to him. I credit the poison for that. And i am sure these are even more vicous. Sad thing is i have a druid now, goign to kite this things butt, not give it a chance to poison. Poor Poor Spider, PETA wouldn't be happy. But technically, Verant doesn't consider spiders as animals. So maybe PETA will understand

Crags are perfect for a druid-caster team of relitively low levels. The druid snares it, and both nuke it to death. The minimun level is 16, below that, nuke spells are always resisted. Once you hit level 16, your nukes usually do full damage.

Any crag can be bested (I've never run into one that resisted my spells after I hit level 16). I never went below 40% mana when grouped with another druid (he was 17) and his mana never went below 60%.

FYI, carrion spiders will aid the crags too, ever the greenies. Not really a danger, just an annoyance. Snare them and continue kiting the crag. Good luck and happy hunting! The experience is fan-bloody-tastic for a level 16!

Oops, bad subject, I've been killing these things since level 19 and plan to continue with them until at least 21-22 (I'm level 20 now). I'm a druid so I was able to snare them (and I didn't experience the snare resist others seem to be having) and then just Careless Lightning them to death. Often I would have to melee to finish out the battle but with your damage shield on and endure poison you shouldn't have too much trouble. Just make sure you keep your eye out for NPCs that would gang up on you (other crags, lion patriarchs, lioness matriarchs, etc.)

Its simple to kill these things. First get endure or resist poision. Preferable resist. and if you can, get DMF. DMF bumps your poision resist up by about 75ish.

Next, where to hunt. Have your druid, or someone withe SOW go and pull. Bring it to the Pull it to the entrance to Highpass. NOw either kite it in the area or root and nuke, or send in the tanks.

Personally i go with about 3-4 people, A preist, a caster, and one or two tanks. Preists sit back and heal/dmg shield/DOT (but mainly heal). The caster and tanks do what they do best. Attack!!!! be aware, these things havve a lot of hp, so dont be too surprized if your out fighting for a long time. Priest should cast invigor every now and then when needed.

These things are listed as level 18-20, but you'd be surpised how easy it is to defeat them. Myself and a partner killed one without too much trouble. I had a 16 druid and he had a 17 shadow knight, and he didn't summon a pet. He just beat it while I kept Stinging Swarm on it and repeatedly cast Cure Poison. I suppose without Cure Poison these things would be much tougher, but you don't have to kite them or have a large group in order to kill them.

I was fighing these guys at lvl 23 & 24.
They gave good exp.
Poison is the worst, took me 3 spells to cure it. I had resist poison buff on & still got poisoned. I would root, stack dot's, reroot, med. Then dd mana burn & still had to melee some of them.
THey have many HP.
Conning

Right, at lvl 25 you get 7 lvls of blue. It is at 22 (i think) that you get 6 lvls of blue con messages. Therefore nothing has been posted which suggests that levels above are in correct. Unless Mandorr Wolfhound (26th druid) is suggesting he only gets blue cons, which would suggest that the minimum lvl of the crag spider is 19. But I do no think he was making this point.
You can't fail in swatch making
# Jul 10 2000 at 11:03 AM Rating: Good
When you combine 2 spiders silks, you never fail. You always make the swatches, every time.
#Anonymous, Posted: Oct 07 2000 at 3:50 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) because they go trivial at like lvl 14. If you ever fail and your feeble or higher then you'll probably get struck by lightning any second now.

umm..

wtf?

they dont aggro.. if you attack one foolishly and there are others in range you are royally f@cked.. however.. they dont attack you even if you are camo'd or invis's. If you pull one and then camo, they will see you anyway because they have you targetted.. but that's normal and you would need enthrall or feign death to get them to go away.

These are tailor made for the mage or the necro, as I think I have already posted. Get a water pet (immune to posion) and nuke SMARTLY so as to not aggro it off your pet. once these aggro they are tough to shake off..

Hints

If you are a ranger these are great. All you have to do is root and then switch off first cast ignite then shoot your bow. I have done great with these and i usually can kill them before they get to me. Even if they come at me i just kil em before they can get me poisoned oh i was 25 when i was doing this. I also hit for 22 with my trueshot and crit at 45.
Social Creatures
# Apr 03 2000 at 2:39 PM Rating: Decent
Yes, crags and carrion spiders are both social creatures. If you pull one, the others will come if they are in aggro range.
Also, at level 20, I believe your con range changes to 5 levels (so anything 18+ will con blue to you at level 23). Not positive that it is 5 levels though, so don't quote me on it.
Maz Lvl?

I am not so sure that these bad boys max out at 20. They still con blue to my 23 shaman. By the by, if you can stand the poison, they give excellent exp!
Too many HP

Anyone else think these things have too many damn HP? It takes 7 lightnings to drop one of these buggers when a griff is not handy.
Crags and silks
# Mar 20 2000 at 4:35 PM Rating: Decent
Spent a lot of time hunting Crags. They drop 0-8 silks. More commonly in the 3-5 range. A sewing kit (even a small kit) is a must to combine the silks since the swatches stack. The above post is correct, it takes three Cure Poison to get rid of their poison. A higher level cleric (above 24 I think) can cure it with one cast of their improved cure spell. Heard rumors that spiders in general have a higher resistance to snare and root. Don't know if that is true.

Crags also help each other. So watch the area before you pull. I recommend pulling and not fighting out on the plains. If you go into the hills to hunt them, watch out for the Hill Giants and Cyclops.

They are still giving experience to a level 25 enchanter friend.
Silks

I have had one drop 8 silks once. Nice im going to get my monk some cured silk.
Oh and i never failed either.
Tips for Crags
# Mar 03 2000 at 12:46 PM Rating: Good
I spent levels 19 to 24 here fighting Crags. I have seen 6 silks and 2 poison sacks drop on one spider. Great loot, bu silks don't stack. Bring a sewing kit and combine them 2 at a time and make silk swatches. The swatches stack. My tailoring was 0 at start, and combining the silks improved it to 15. I never had any fails. Good luck!!

its impossible to fail a swatch, so its a great way to get you tailoring skill up to 15 or 16? Its been a long time.
Poison for all
# Mar 01 2000 at 11:00 AM Rating: Decent
A particularly fun spider to fight.. poison does about 200pts damage over time, so be sure you can get a cure or a couple heals. Also, this mob is a tailors DREAM ! I've had it drop 7 silks at once :)
More on Poison

It took me 3 casts of Cure Poison to get rid of the poison from this baby, and they are darn fast and seemed to resist snare with ease. Also drops poison sacs.
