Spawn Timer
# Jul 12 2008 at 10:33 AM Rating: Good
The Spawn Timer for Maldyn the unkempt is 6 minutes exactly, he shares the timer with "a drake" "Brother Zephyl" and Hasten. Just sit right infront of where the froglok remains are located, the mobs path right near there everytime.

they all seem to spawn around the new HG area and can move THROUGH walls to get to other valleys! spawn timer is 5:57 (not 6 mins) so you can save yourself another 3 seconds...i have been killing drakes for a while now. saw 1 hasten and way too many drakes and now 1 maldyn. no brother yet /cry. good luck to all yall!

This guy is a real rare spawn. I have been hunting HG's quite some time in Rathe and he has showed up only once on track.

I saw him fight a HG the way a druid certainly shouldn't be fighting a HG (is he a druid btw?) and he died with the HG at 80% health.

His last words: "Now i shall never reclaim the other bow part from... Gukk ... Slay ... thhhh..."

Anyways, when you want this guy, make sure you're there when he spawns and that he doesn't start attacking HG's, cause he won't live long then.

Hes not all that rare, just as you said, he dosent last long.

He spawns at about the same rate as hasten in the cycle.

Actually, I think he's a ranger.. but yeah, he shouldn't be tanking a HG unbuffed and without a healer.

Just saw this guy while pp HGs on my rogue. He was coming up the hill while my HG was walking down it.
Thanks to the heroic efforts of this guy I finished off the HG for some exp.
Earlier I saw a kodiak bear wander on the hill. It was the first time I have ever seen a bear on HG hill.
Maybe it is a ph for this guy along with drake for Hasten, etc.

Maldyn the unkempt
# Jan 12 2002 at 7:20 AM Rating: Decent
I have been camping Brother Zephyl, as a monk looking at my epic. This camp has been rather annoying after spending 6 hours on the camp(only 4 killing stuff we had a run in with Rhurzar or whatever...) In 4 hours these were the spawns...

a drake: 12
Hasten Bootstrutter: 5
Maldyn the unkempt: 3
Brother Zephyl:0

Just so you know, it seems that Bro Z. is still the rarest in the cycle, as has been posted on monk sites since we knew the cycle...

Also it has taken just about exactly 12 mins every time from the time of kill till the next one strolled past the Feerott zone line in RM heading east toward the zone line thru the chasm infront of it, then all of them turn south(right) at the zone line and full fill their routs.

I guess I've just been unlucky 'cause I've killed a pile of drakes, about 5 Hastens, and managed to spawn Bro.Z TWICE. This was over 2 days and not a whole lot of time spent there (maybe 5 hours at the most). At least it was good the first time Bro.Z appeared 'cause I was grouped with a L48 Monk who was looking for him. He was happy happy! Of course, every time Bro.Z comes up I get to camp and come back later when he has despawned. =(

Also FYI, by my clock the spawn rate has been 8 minutes OR LESS. Drakes seem to come up faster for some reason, and it seems all of these guys have actually appeared near the hill giant area, but sometimes we were a ways away down the corridor and didn't see them until they wandered into tracking range. Those were the only times that the timing went over 8 minutes.

I highly recommend staying close to the giant hill area because if Maldyn does manage to spawn he could get killed before he shows up on track unless you're right there.

conning amiably

I think he cons amiably because you've got good unkempt druid faction. Just a guess.

Maldyn the Unkempt is by far the rarest spawn on the "a drake | Hasten Bootstrutter | Brother Zephyl | Maldyn the Unkempt" cycle. The order appears to be as above, with the drake being the generic PH. Typically, Hasten pops after 3-5 drakes.

I have yet to see this guy, and I have been looking for a total of probably 4 r/l hours of PH kiling. The timer on the PH is about 8 minutes. Once Hasten/Brother Z pop, you're pretty much out of luck for the evening, which is what makes this camp so frustrating. Hasten is lvl40 (everytime) so I suppose he could be killed by a standard HG group fairly easily. I have no idea what the faction implications of this would be.

By the way, I tried killing Albain Tinderbrand, the little druid up at the Unkempt ring, to get Hasten to despawn. This was mentioned in another post under the Ivy Gauntlets quest. Don't bother - you get faction hits (-unkempt druids, -qrg protected animals, +jaggedpine treefolk) but Hasten does not despawn.

In reading these posts and trying to follow the spawn cycle for Maldyn, I finally got my Broken Bow Part A. Here's how it worked for me.

First, I was in a group killing HG's. I noticed on track that Hasten was up. Based upon previous experience, I knew that it would take seemingly forever for the spawn cycle to run its course. So, in an /ooc message I expressed a wish that Hasten would despawn. Someone asked why and I explained that I needed Bloodstrutter to despawn to trigger a cycle of spawns for a quest item. Shortly thereafter, I read an /ooc message about Hasten being one tough little gnome. Apparently someone much higher level than I killed Hasten.

That triggered the following spawn cycle. A few minutes after Hasten was killed, "a drake" spawned in the Zazamoukh Sphinx area. I tracked it and killed it. After the first "a drake" was gone, a second "a drake" spawned near the Lizard Man camp numbered 22 in the Eqatlas map. I killed it and headed back to group hunting HG's.

A few minutes later, Maldyn the unkempt spawned just where everyone else sees him spawn, on the hill near the guard tower. I was lucky. Maldyn was not attacked by any HGs or Cyclops and a nice level 41 monk in my group took Maldyn out (I helped a little).

So, I agree with Arynduil Greyleaf that one way to trigger Maldyn's spawn is to kill Hasten. He is reportedly faction neutral and you would not take any faction hits for doing so. I did not see Brother Zephyl on the last camp. In past times I have seen him less than Hasten and more often than Maldyn (who I've only seen him once). Brother Z seems to despawn faster than Hasten.

Now I'm off to Lower Guk.
Finally got him
# Aug 27 2001 at 6:46 PM Rating: Good
Finally got the ******* last night... and wasn't a pretty sight. I would not go to RM just to hunt Maldyn, he was very hard to find. Some research and my experience point to the idea that he is on the same spawn cycle as Hasten Bootstrutter (for the jboots quest), Brother Zephyl (a lvl 60+ who can take hours and hours to despawn), and 'a drake.' After 10 nights in RM I had never seen Maldyn once, although the one night I was away he spawned twice and my EQ wife Merinu was able to get the bow part.

Anyway, zoned into RM on camo to meet with typical hunting party friends and spotted him on track! Having read that he was KOS to cyclops and giants I zoomed straight for him and attacked... should have memmed cancel magic, he had a dmg shield up. He hit around 60s and cast a few ranger spells, we were both down to half life by the time my friends tracked us down. All of a sudden I notice I'm down to 1 bub of health... a hill giant had popped on top of us and decided to beat the crap out of me instead of Maldyn! Welcome back to GFay (bind spot for Unrest raid), and dong, welcome back lvl 33.

Merinu and friends managed to kill Maldyn (who had the bow part, is not a 100% drop supposedly) and kite the giant to the zone. Despite the friendly help of guildie Tyime to port me from BB to Feerott, his corpse rotted before I could get there... /cry

But then the sun came out for me! Just as I finished looting my corpse, Maldyn popped a 2nd time (unbelievable!) so I took off in pursuit, this time with no spells memmed except snare and camo! With no giant to help him out this time we kicked his ***** he lamented something about the other missing part of the bow in Guk, and dropped part A for me!

And to make all things better, I amazingly only lost 2 or 3 blue bubs and gained lvl 34 back after a handful of kills. I couldn't have scripted it any better... /cheer

For those searching for Maldyn, the first time I found him standing on the N slope of the HG hill at approx loc of +800, +1500 (did not take actual /loc but am referencing EQAtlas map). Second time I found him standing on S slope of same hill at approx loc 0, +1500... he blinked and took off running at SoW speed just as I got close... had to pull him with an arrow when I finally got in range. Conned blue at 34 the first time, white at 33 the 2nd... I would guess he always pops as a lvl 33 but not sure of that. Did not respond to hails, and didn't wait to see if I could ask him about the Bow of Kithicor, was afraid he'd run off on me -- he did con amiable oddly enough so I would be curious if responds to queries about the bow.

Good luck all,

Well, it all turned out ok for you, which is great! But you shoulda have just had your friends loot the Bow Part, and multiquested it!

Oh, as for the drop rate on the Bow Part, it sounds like it might be similar to the Cyclops Charm off Tarskuk (same zone, used for the Ivy Etched Helm). I had that particular item drop 4 out of 5 times.

Ah well, grats on the gaunts...

killed him on Fennin Ro last night... TWICE!
# Aug 16 2001 at 4:51 AM Rating: Default
He was right near the big rock mountain where the HGs spawn, both times. I had been camping him for weeks when doing the gauntlet quest and never saw him, and finally a monk told me his ranger alt had the piece and wasn't using it so he MQ'd it with me. Last night I was killing HGs with a couple members of my guild and he spawned. We killed him, I looted, and then he spawned again about 20 minutes later, and another member of my guild looted.

Weird though, when I was doing the quest there was no sign of him. Now that I already have them, he spawns twice.

Anyway, his PHs are Hasten, a drake, and Brother Zephyl, and Maldyn spawns right near the HG area and will stand there for a while before taking off. He'll also con amiably to rangers, and won't give you a faction hit when you kill him. He's pretty easy to kill if you can find him, and doesn't cast a whole lot.

The last time I've heard he was up was about a week ago (on fennin ro) and someone was killing him, and was going to let me loot the bow. Unfortunately Maldyn didn't drop the bow, so it's back to waiting again. Apparently it's not a 100% drop.
Spawn on Maldyn

I still haven't found this guy, i seem to log in just about a half an hour since his last siting...another ranger (level 39) told me he spawns only if Hasten, the drak, and brother Zephyl are not in the zone....he also told me he travels a set path, from the Giant valley, to the Pharoh valley, then bacl to the ferrot zone and then back to giants again. *shrugs* now that rangers can just about track half the zones in norrath you would think you could pick up on him easy...i'd recommend at least being by the unkempt druid ring before he would actually pop up on your tracking.

I had the fortunate luck to catch Maldyn on tracking, and race over to see him fighting a clops. my friend managed to pull away the clops while i had my way with Maldyn and got the bow parts A. So even if you are lucky enough to get them. good luck going to Lower Guk to get parts B.
the item sucks anyway. might as well get the Dm guantlets and called it a day. i don't think i'll ever get to get part B, i'm 43 now and it's not even worth the effort

On the contrary...if you plan on doing any plane raids, deep dungeon raids, Nag raids, Vox raids, Fire Giant raids, etc. you WILL need resist gear and this is a very nice piece of resist gear. I outgrew my DM gaunts in my mid 30's level btw. Any quest item worth anything is not going to be "easy". What do you want? It handed to you on a platter? Bah. Quests are to provide a challenge and the reward is worth the challenge.

I've been in Rathe Mountains for about a week now and I have not seen this guy. I think I'm in the right place, but maybe not. I'm East of the HG Bowl around the Haunted Stone Ring, is that the right place. Any help on this would be appreciated.

I was able to catch up to this guy while tracking Hasten for my guildmate. At level 30 he conned red to me but blue to the level 40 paly I was with. With a healer (33 shaman) we were able to take him down in a moderate fight. FYI, later the same day, I continued to track for Quil for another guildmate and saw Maldyn on tracking again. I don't think he is on an 80 spawn cycle like I read elsewhere. I believe it's purely random and not a set time.

Yes, but rangers don't have all the druid spells. That's an important difference. Or do you think a ranger casts as well as a druid?

This guy hangs out near the HG area and drops Bow Part A for the Ranger Gauntlet quest. He is very rare and you can sometimes find him doing the spin on the rock that leads to the HG area. The lvl you have seems to be close but may be a bit too low.
