I had the same experience, killed by a Kodiak and then while on a corpse run attacked by lioness. That was for my wood elf druid at level 7. Now I'm level 10 and have discovered the Snare/Fear combo. Lioness Steaks All Around. ;-)

The guys are nice because they drop cat pelts which are important in crafting meduim sized tailored armor. Not too tough to kill although druids may be surprised when these guys attack since we druids are unaccostomed to being attacked by animals.
Troublemakers

Thease things and lions just druise around looking for trouble. They are verry annoying. I was ion a corpse run and one attacked and almost killed me, luckily a friend killed it for me. Of course i kept on the corpse run instead of sitting down to heal as any sane person would and ended up getting killed a second time, this time by a shadow wolf. o well, it all worked out in the end.

One of these in E Comm dropped a ruined lion skin. Couldn't make patchwork with it
like I can with ruined bear, cat, or wolf. Are they usable for anything?

The lvl is wrong. On conned yellow to me at lvl 8 so they can be 9 too. =)
They attack druids

One of the supposedly big things about the druid class is that animals aren't supposed to attack you unless you attack them first or unless you've somehow messed up your faction standing with them. And indeed, all the bears, wolves, jackals, etc all con amiable to me and always have. But these things are aggressive towards me... along with lions. Pumas don't attack, but con dubious to me, so I guess it must be a cat thing or something. Lionesses can be tough up to about level 10, after that they're just annoying little pussycats ;)
Random attacks

I have noticed that they tend to attack when I am medding, (along with black bears, giant scarabs and young kodiacs, though not at the same time :) which is fine, coz at level 12, with a (con) yellow pet at my side they don't pose much of a threat but it is annoying.

Any other time and they will leave me alone. Lions on the otherhand just deserve to be fireballed - for all the times they have trashed me :)

Giant Scarabs and Young Kodiaks have never attacked me while I was medding...maybe you just messed up your faction, or they do that just because you are a certain class, I could be medding right by one and not get attacked.
Be careful

I turned level 7 last night (UK Time) and decided to venture away from N.Ro into the East Commons. One of thes conned blue to me so I took a risk and attacked. It was very close, took all but 1 bubble of mana and all but two bubbles of health. Good xp tho :)

They may only be level 6-8 .. but my level 11 Ranger had a hell of a time killing one ... I was KOS to it, it conned blue to me, and strikes that usually cause anywhere from 12-21 damage were only hitting the little wench for 6-8 ... and they can parry!

These, like their male counterparts, drop cat pelts of varying quality.
