It's been a while since the last discussion so wanted to confirm that the AC in SR still (sorta) works per the earlier post back in 2008. Namely:

ENCOUNTER_DESCRIPTION SROHusamAncientNightfall
MONSTER_1_NAME a_desert_madman
MONSTER_1_NIGHT_NAME an_ancient_cyclops
MONSTER_1_PERCENT 10
MONSTER_2_NAME a_sand_giant
MONSTER_2_NIGHT_NAME a_mummy
MONSTER_2_PERCENT 20
MONSTER_3_NAME a_sand_giant
MONSTER_3_PERCENT 10
MONSTER_4_NAME a_dervish_cutthroat
MONSTER_4_PERCENT 30
MONSTER_5_NAME a_desert_madman
MONSTER_5_PERCENT 30

I spent the last 10 days about 8-9 hours per day to get the AC. All the PHs above were spawning on the 24 min 42 sec cycle - sorta. The AC did spawn for me at night at 11 pm game time at +1251, -1635, +34. I tried to kill the PH at 12 pm to get an 8 pm chance and again before 10 pm to get a 6 am chance as other posts suggested - this was hard to maintain because the times would slowly creep and eventually the PH would spawn at 11 pm and I would lose the morning chance . Being I spent so long at this and probably got at least 10-15 chances per real time day which is close to 80-120 chances spread over the 10 days I question if this is actually 1% instead of 10% (hard to believe I got that unlucky if it is still actually 10%)

Placeholders include:
a mummy
a dervish cutthroat (orc, lowercase)
a sand giant
a desert madman

Respawn time is not 24min 42sec but a bit longer between 25min-28min. It fluctuates a bit for some reason.

I have done this quest at least 3 times over the last 20 years. All 3 times in SRO. The third time was today, 9/30/2019 @ 1:19 AM.

I have never ever seen a dervish cutthroat spawn in this area (minus the dervish camps) and I have to say that a dervish cutthroat is not and has never been the placeholder for the ancient cyclops. This information has been here for as long as I can remember, and it's not even accurate.

What is the placeholder? To be honest, I still don't know. a desert madman? a ghoul? a shriveled mummy? crypt mummy in the tower? one of'em. I got'em all. He spawned.

Definitely no dervish frickin cutthroat though...

HI

I have been working at this for weeks on end. What could I be doing wrong? I cannot even count the human hours I have spent killing everything under the sun. Do you think because I am playing the classic EQ is the problem? the server I am on is the problem? Or, is my head just a bit too flat and dense?

Any chance you can walk me (and others) through your magical success?

As mentioned below, there are a number of possible placeholders. One of them is "a dervish cutthroat" (lowercase, roaming, orc model). I witnessed this mob as being the respawn about 28 minutes after killing an ancient cyclops. Other possible placeholders include a desert madman, a sand giant, and other mobs that are indistinguishable from the rest of the roaming trash in the southern desert. So "a dervish cutthroat" is not always up, but if it is, that's the placeholder.

the 'rest of the trash' is easily distinguishable from the AC phs.... the only things that can be PHs are: a mummy, a dervish cutthroat, a desert madman, and a sand giant.... atleast you got the 28 min timer right

Confirming the information below works well on TLP. Respawn of 24m 42s, I encountered the mentioned PH's and it only took about 8 cycles to spawn AC. Very easy if the zone is empty of players.

Killing the PH at 12pm allows for a spawn at 8 and you can kill up until 10pm for a spawn at 6AM. You get 2 shots per night 72 minutes is still good info in 2018.

On Coirnav 4/20/2018: Arrived at SoRo at 4 pm game time. Waited until midnight game time and killed PHer. The AC spawned at the approximate location of 2086 x -2247 at 6 am game time. If one stands on the Wizard spire and faces NE, there is a "valley" of sorts between the sand dunes. The AC spawned at the far end very close to the wall.

Repop time seems changed
# Jan 24 2016 at 4:21 PM Rating: Good

So my last post mentions how everything seemed to line up, but I wasn't 100% sure since I was dancing between picks. Well, now (trying to camp it for my wife) I've paid more attention.

The original "reveal" post by the dev indicated 30.66 min placeholder repop time (10 in-game hours). Many people affirmed this later. However, I am observing a different repop time. I am not sure if it's limited to TLP servers (i'm on Phinigel) but I am able to confirm 24 minute 42 second repop times. 42 seconds may seem precise, but the server, like all spell effects, "ticks" at 6 seconds so all spawn times must be divisible by 6. You'll notice this if you time stuff specifically.

So everything mentioned before is still accurate, but the repop time is now (at least on Phinigel) 24 min 42 seconds. This is about 8 game hours. So make sure the earliest you're killing the day PH is 12pm game time for an 8pm game time (night) spawn. I confirmed this by seeing "a dervish cutthroat" (one of the confirmed PHs) spawn 24 min 42 sec from one another during two separate cycles.

Confirmed that the whole day/night placeholder cycle information posted earlier on is still accurate. Killed SRo ancient cyclops a few minutes ago on the Phinigel server. Only mobs I ever killed were the ones pointed out:

a mummy
a dervish cutthroat (the wandering all lowercase one only, not the static capitalized ones)
a desert madman
a sand giant

Was killing across 2 "picks" of SRo so I didn't get to manage the PHs as I hoped, but he ended up popping at 1am game time. The whole time I was camping him everything lined up with the guide as to when PHs would spawn and what to expect.

No one happened to mention here that the "a dervish cutthroat" that roams is different than all the others. The other's are capitalized, if they are static: a Dervish Cutthroat"
If you are tracking, you will see on track the one that roams is all lower case.

Does the Ancient Cyclops still spawn in South Ro?
# Jul 27 2011 at 1:49 PM Rating: Decent
Since the zone revamp, when Oasis was merged with South Ro, does the Ancient Cyclops still spawn there at all?

I'd like to hear confirmation from someone who witnessed it there. Most people tell me that it no longer spawns there, only on cyclops island in the Ocean of Tears.

I"ve also heard that it no longer spawns at the static placeholder spot that used to be on Erollisi Island in OOT (?).

Surefire way to get him to spawn: take a tracker (have auto update on) find either "a mummy" "sand giant" "desert madman" and a "dervish cutthroat" (the derv has to be a roaming spawn not a static, its not hard hes the only one that roams) once you find this person kill them at 10am....30.6666min later you have a 10% chance to spawn the AC at 8pm. If its not the AC then kill it asap and once the PH comes at 6am wait to kill it until 10am....rinse repeat. AVOID KILLING ANYTHING ELSE AS TO NOT MESS WITH YOUR TRACK FILTER!

Someone suggests that since you'll either be killing the AC or another PH at 8pm game time you could get another shot at 6am (30.666min after 8pm) but i still very highly doubt you can see him up unless he spawns between 8pm-5am.

I just camped this the last two days for me and a friend got him both times at 8pm. FYI: the "a mummy" spawn can only happen at night (8pm-5am) so if you ever see one at 6am then that should pretty much confirm that the AC can also spawn at 6am but i've seen 4 "a mummy" and 2 AC and all happened to be at 8pm.

Great post EQrust, your method seemed sound. I was using it intermittently and using gate to pull myself back to OOT back and forth in my downtime in SRO. He never popped in SRO but did in OOT after about 2 hours of killing cyclopses and everything else on the island. Your post seemed to make logical sense and using tracking I was able to follow the method but he popped in OOT before he did in SRO for me.

Ok, for anyone who doesn't like searching through thousands of posts, this is it. At 10am, game time, simply go through the desert area and kill every desert madman you see, or sand giant, a mummy, or a dervish cutthroat like the list says a few posts down. Then about 31 minutes later it will be 8pm gametime which means the night names are used which means a mummy and named large guys can spawn. After you kill the respawn, whatever it is, 31 more minutes and it should be around 6-7am, still technically night. So you get 10% chance, two times, every 72 minutes to spawn the AC this way. That's it, and I wish I had known that in 2001...

Totally confirmed this post, in addition to the comment by prackers below. Clear out all desert madmen, dervish cutthroats, sand giants, and that hussain giant dude, right at 10 a.m. game time(never saw any "mummies" and did not kill any "crypt mummies" or other "shrivelled mummies", they are not involved). Then, according to pracker's code, one of these will spawn at 8, kill immediately, and another will spawn at 6 a.m.( do not kill the 6 a.m. spawn until 10). repeat this cycle every 72 minutes. Eventually the cyclops will spawn, may take a while. He spawned for me exactly at 8 p.m. right in the middle of the dune just south of the camp with vendors. Works like a charm

Think what it basically says there is a 10% chance for that MOB to spawn as the ancient cyclops instead of one of the other listed types, and then only if it is night time. What it doesn't tell you is how often that particular MOB will spawn, or how many MOBs there are with that table. I've never heard of more than one AC being up at a time, so presumably there is just one MOB.

# Dec 20 2007 at 3:02 PM Rating: Default
i used to think it was just a timed spawn but now I hear placeholders. allways been a mystery to me. I did kill it 35 times+ and lodozil 30+ times and bildge, and quilmaine, etc etc. never figured it out though. Lodozil it seemed was fairly predicable 10 hours about. AC though was just all over the place. seemed like 6 hours but then people seemed to be able to spawn it. we ran all around killing everything seemed pretty random.

When I got to the island, I went to the old druid ring and just sat there.
Lots of cyclops running around, but opened track and no sign of ancient.
After several minutes, I went to get a drink, came back, opened track and
the ancient was there.

He was on the same path as before the revamp. He just walks over to the
other side of the island, stands there for awhile and wanders back.

The only difference now, is no place holder, and the seafury's are on the
same island.

Killed the AC last night in OOT.

Was quadding seafuries by the druid ring, and he popped out there with them.

I don't know what his old path was; he seemed to be wandering with them (I didn't let him wander far tho).

Did my quadding spawn him? Is he on a random timer?

I checked track when he died, and Boog was up, so I don't think boog is a ph.

Quag Maelstrom was up, too, wandering nearby, when he spawned.

I hope one day SoE tells us what the secret to spawning the AC is. All I can do is report what I witnessed.
