Meldrath always up?

Meldrath seems to always be up (spawned). He is in the minotaur caves with 2 guards. They will aggro you along with Meldrath even if you get them down to gray. I am doing the Ivy etched quests without Defiant armor or a mercenary so it is a bit rough. Though I do use the timed-AA skills and servant that give you short duration buffs, which made Meldrath doable at level 40.

I snared him and ran back towards the windmills. Taking out one of his minotaur guards, with a gnome guard taking out the other. Then I DOTd Meldrath as he came along towards the windmills. Luckily the necro "fear" spell (I forget the name) causes the mobs to drop aggro while you just sit there doing nothing. It was still a tough fight with the AA buffs but Meldrath doesn't have too much HP so I was able to nuke him down at the end.

I have a ranger on the Fippy progression server who's trying to do the ivy-etched tunic quest and I can only find Meldrath stuck high up on a mountain wall outside where I can't hit him with anything. I can target him if I type /target M. Does he still spawn in the caves, too, and I'm just missing him? I've been debating trying to recruit someone with AoE spells who might be able to get close enough to him and pull him down that way. Any ideas?

I just soloed the lvl 35 version with a 31 gnome chanter. I drew the guards off and killed them first. Then i got close enough to use curse of the simple mind which got me aggro. I pulled him out of his den and closer to the entrance (in case the guards re-spawned). Then I hit him (not the pet) with suffocate. I just kept nailing him with sanity warp and an occasional suffocate. The pet died with him. All I got for loot was a sunshard dust. =(

I am working on tinkering, and the Minotaur Blood will hopefull take me above 300, although I might learn to hate it before I get that far. Getting as much Minotaur Blood as possible means killing Minotaur Guards, and Meldrath who will also aggro. I agree with the other posters about huge aggro range on the guards, but it seems to be less for Meldrath. He does aggro through walls, what a pain!

But down to the reason for the post: He has dropped for me bat wings once, and a zombie skin once. On a subsequent pass through the minotaur cave, I checked his ability to see invis, and he does not see invis, so I presume he is not undead. And he doesn't look undead. I don't know where the zombie skin came from, but it was there on the corpse. Maybe he ate a zombie? And as far as I know you can't give stuff to mobs and then kill them and get the stuff back the way you used to be able to do in the past. Further, since I was the only one killing in the zone, I don't think it was a plant.

Gnome meat is pretty common from this guy, so if you are looking for gnome meat, don't want to kill good gnomes, and don't have the fire power to kill high levels, this is a good, but slow source of gnome meat.

I should add that he was an easy solo for a level 75 ranger, even with his two guards as adds. None of his spells stuck, and hits were for three to ten or so. I can down him and a guard with one cast of hail of arrows. OOOhhhh. What a difference about 60 levels makes compared to when I first wanted to down Meldrath, but knew there was no way I was going to do it at level 10 to 15. Back then soloing single minotaurs was something of a challenge, and getting two on a pull was a good reason to run to zone.

Yeah, especially when fighting something fifteen levels higher than they are. By the way, it's spelled rogue, not rouge. Just thought you may like to know how to spell your own class.
By the way, congratulations on the speedy ten levels you made with your paladin since you "just soloed this guy."

He was quite easy for me. Just soloed him and pet with a 48 pally buffed with just virtue. Worked on his pet first.. a few dismiss undeads and he was done with. About that time the dirty little nec pulled two dots on me. Stuned him then cast Thunder of Karana. After about two casts all he could do was poke me. hehe. It was all over from there. Left with 55% health and 60% mana. So moral of the story *Necromancers are nothing without their mana.*

War between Malignant and Eldritch
# Apr 30 2004 at 11:05 PM Rating: Decent
I zoned into Steamfont and as I was headed towards the mino caves I brought up the track window. On it were dozens (I'd say about 50-60) red (to a lvl 40) mobs. A Malignant <something> were all minos and An Eldritch <different types> were all little gnomes. Both types con'ed indifferent to me. They were fighting one another.

A post mentions this happening to them too but I cannot find a reference anywhere about it. The mobs are not listed in the beastiary and I found no quest related to it. Obviously this is a triggered event but since nobody mentioned it but one person in the posts below it makes me think that simply killing Meldrath is not enough to trigger it.

Does anyone know more about this?

This event rocks. At first, it seems pointless and dangerous, but after a few minutes of messing around, I found it to be VERY useful.

First of all, it is hella fast and free exp. You will get 1% AA exp at 65 for every kill. This may not sound like much, but the key here is, listen up - this is important, you don't actually have to kill anything to get exp. Simply tag a mob with a bow or spell, and when it gets killed by the other mobs, >>YOU<< get the exp. Yes, you heard that right, just agro a mob in some way, and you will get exp when that mob dies.

I brought my level 44 ranger, and had him target the nearest mob, launch an arrow at it, then assist it to get a new mob targeted, and hit that new mob with an arrow, etc. In 15 minutes, my level 44 ranger got 3 yellow bars of exp for doing practically nothing.

These mobs will not agro you unless you really **** them off. They will usually continue to beat on each other and ignore you for the most part. If you see that they turn their attention to you... RUN. 20+ creatures quadding in the 300+ range makes you dead fast.

My little ranger was hapily standing on a hill launching arrows at mob blobs, when I saw a new named mob appear on track. The blob made its way to this new named dude and began to smack it down. I targeted him (it was not easy) then hit him with an arrow. When he was killed, I received 2 blue bubs of EXP and loot rights. He dropped an INT caster range item with FT 4. I logged my necro to loot it and submitted the item to Allakhazam with a screen shot.

Unfortunately, the event ended after I finished looting. If anyone knows how to trigger it again, please post it so I can take the rest of my twinks to Steamfont for some quick PL.

I was at the event start to finish on Xegony. It happened once around 5pm EST on May 1st and again around 11pm on May 2nd.

To me the event seems pretty pointless. Most of the mobs con even to a level 63 and the bosses (Meldrath and another gnome whos name starts with a J, can't remember name) con yellow to a 65. The good gnome leader stands a ways out from the cave and Meldrath stands underneath the huge gear that's stuck in the ground past the caves. A message is displayed zonewide that tells players to choose a side, Eldritch or Malignant. Just before the event the two leaders shout at each other for a while, then the two armies charge each other and go at it. If any of the mobs die during the war, they respawn from behind their respective leaders. This goes on for about 3 hours or so, then everything poofs and the zone repops like nothing ever happened. All mobs from either side con indifferent until you attack either side, at which point they will assist each other and rape you severely.

There seems to be a problem with the malignant side, though. When the malignant skeletons die, sometimes their replacements will spawn as "malevolent" instead of "malignant". These malevolent skeletons con scowl to all and will attack you regardless of which team you're attacking. This makes it virtually impossible to make any headway when attacking eldritch gnomes.

In the time I was at the event, nothing dropped off any of the mobs that was not on the regular loot table for the zone. The skeletons dropped bone chips, the clockworks dropped gnome n00b quest items, the rats dropped rat ears and tails, and the minotaurs dropped horns and axes. Once, a cruddy no-drop DRU/MNK/BST hat dropped off "an eldritch perforator". It had like 14ac 4dex 3sta 10hp or something like that, with a reccomended level of 40. Rotting Leather something-or-other. Other than that I didn't see anything of interest. Why a level 40 hat would drop here is beyond me, as even at 65 I died 3 times while I was there, two of which went without rez because all the clerics had been smart enough to run away.

The bosses couldn't be killed. They were targetable, but could not be cast on or melee'd, and when hailed, said nothing.

I asked two GM's that were online about it, they both just /smiled and /evilgrinned at me and said they had no clue what I was talking about.

That's about all I know. Overall so far I seem to have wasted my time and experience. This event appears to be nothing but a death trap.

He was still light blue to me at 52, and put up a hell of a fight too. I had cleared the way in first, so I didn't have to worry about aggroing the mino guards that spawn in the same room.
Of course, in typical necro style, his pet is the main problem - if you can get him before he casts his pet then he's not such a pain.

So if you get him alone and pre-pet then yes. If you get the entire room then maybe not. :)

Unless of course they've nerfed him between then and now...

got killed becuase i was way too arrogant and wrongfully believed i was able to fear kite him.

even though it is a very small dungeon with only low-level mobs in it, fear kiting can be suicidal, especially for those with low magic resistance. in my case, the little nasty necro's spells successfully weakened me to the extent that even extra-green minotaurs could stun me three times in a row.

to make things worse, my fear song didn't last as long as it should have been (dunno why). so by the time Meldrath & Co took away 60% of my HP, the antagonist himself still had 90% HP, which was crazy.

there were better ways to hunt him down. i just picked the one that sucked. so i guess i suck LOL.

I am a 52 wizzy and i was walking thru tunnel for fun and he aggroed me thru a wall and came up in my target screen i cast back Draught of fire and an ice comet, for some reason i could cast thru the wall too and never had to deal with the minotaur guards , but i did end up going in there and killing them, he is definatley an undercon even though the fight with him was short he ended up taking me to 50% hp with just his 150Hp lifetap and his Dooming darkness/ Boil Blood. the next time i went in with 120 MR and most of his spells didnt stick. lifetap is pretty hard to resist and that acid venom blast spell ( dont know name ) was hitting me for about 60 DD. hope it helps ( he dropped the skull every time i killed him - i killed him 5 times just for fun)

My friend, a 46 bard killed him today, Trained the caves almost killing me in the process then set about killing all his minions. Then Killed him. It was about a 20 minute fight. After all that my friend was down to 30 percent health. When he looted the corpz however all he got were some Rat Whiskers! lol, so keep in mind that Meldrath the Malignant drops Rat whiskers. Poor bard.

<sigh> Been irritated by this overblown lemming **** since I was doing the Trueshot quest around level 16, so when I got my new batch of spells at 39, thought I'd teach him a lesson.

First time, got killed. Was about to be very annoying, but a kindly 60 cleric rezzed me.

Second time: used a useful pulling tactic to clear the others around him (Mino Lord, Pet, Sentry/Guards). Invis and run to the entrance of Meldrath's room (don't have to invis, but if you don't, you'll have to kill the Mino Lord yourself on the way in). With SoW up, uninvis in front of the room, and they will all aggro you - simply run out of the caves, (left every turn from the Meldrath room) and you will drag with you the Guards, Pet and will pick up the lord on the way out. Then just run to the windmills, where Forpza Fizla will stamp on their ********** They all have the same runspeed, which is slightly less than SoW, so they will keep aggro without being able to beat you all the way there. Meldrath himself, however, will get tired and stay in the room.

BE WARNED - this is not a foolproof method - if Meldrath casts Darkness on you, you will be screwed, but he doesn't seem to do this too often.

So that leaves Meldrath on his lonesome. Easy kill without guards or pet at 35, thinks I, especially since I'm 4 levels above him, and have a 60 cleric buff which has doubled my HP's to 2300. Was it ********* Went in invis, popped right on top of him casting cancel magic to get rid of the damage shield. Spell stuck, but he still absorbed my first 3 rounds of attack without damage - even afterwards, I was missing or hitting low, a mitigation pattern that would normally appear on a mob about 5 levels higher, rather than below me. Then he feared me, and I waited around while his DoT's ate into my HP's - by the time I could attack again, I'd already lost 1000 HP, which means with my usual 39 ranger buffs up, I would have been dead. All this, and I'd hardly even dented his red bar - about half of the first one, if I remember correctly. Then he feared me again, and ran to the Mino Lord who had spawned, so I beat it.

To which I say if he is level 35, then golden cherubim blow heavenly trumpets from my diamond encrusted *****

Still irritated, but will get the bugger one day...

Yep, yep, yep. Went in to the caves specifically looking for fast kills of LB and DB stuff for my 44 Ranger who is still suffering from C3 withdrawal. Killed the slavers at the front without even breaking a sweat and brought up track to find me some XP. I see lil Mr Meldrath as DB so head for him, rounded a corner and found myself face-to-face with 2 Mino guards, Mel and his pet so start working on the guards. I see me resisting root 3x so stick with it (hasta la vista guard 1), then darkness sticks, which of course kills SoW and Mel is hitting me for 50-70, guard around 20 and pet for single digits. Only have Ranger buffs (Rift Prot, SLS, SoE, BramCoat, Nat Precis), and this starts to look less promising, so I try to root in order to run but getting interrupted too much, ends badly.

Going to go back and get my body (hopefully a rez) and tread a little more carefully to see if I can pull some of the Minos away before I go back for Meldrath. This should not be difficult, but that's the thing with casters ain't it? Every time you think you can get out they keep pulling you back in! I have an RL friend on the same server who has also been a victim in here so I think we may just may go in together to give Mr Malignant a good caning (or slashing, crushing, piercing).
Agro range
# Jan 23 2003 at 3:08 PM Rating: Good
One thing to watch out for is that agro range is a bit more than what you might expect. I walked in camoflauged, and saw him, his pet, and two guards. So I decided to walk down the hall a bit and do wolf form, and spell up and med. Well the guards start beating on me, but they're not doing to much, so I start to run to get out in the open. Unfortunately apparently Mal also ran out, well he feared me. I run into a walk and the guard just start pounding me. Unfortunately I didn't have gate up and that was the end of my sorry level 40 butt. Just make sure you're ready to fight when you go in, all resist buffs up and such. What I'm not sure is how'd you harmony or otherwise take out the two guards without getting him on you as well

This guy was an easy solo pull for me 37 Dru. No guards were up at the time. I saw him on track (he and pet conned Dark Blue) and went to go get him. I got close to his Spawn point and he stacked 2 DoTs on me. With SoW I ran out and brought his pet out with me. I then proceeded to root DoT his pet and heal my self due to the fairly strong DoTs he cast. Is pet was then killed and time for me to go back in for Meldrath. Again I got close to him (at least enough to snare him) and he begins stacking more DoTs and dispelling SoW etc... (Luckily he didn't get my KEI) and I began to pull him to the entrance of the Caves. He rooted me close to the cave entrance and then Feared me. It was kind of funny to see my self auto cast Fruy of Air on him like 4 times while he lifetapped me once and started DoTing me again. Root finally gave way and Fear wore off I was at about 50% health and about the same mana. I then put Drones of Doom on him and he was quickly below 20% health and couldn't go anywhere... hehehe Gotta love Ensnare. So down he goes while I heal myself. It was a little bit hairy there for a minute or so, but all in all pretty easy. Then I went back in and there are the guards. They conned light blue to me, so I figured what the hey... I got between them and Earthquake. Then run... I snared them and began the "Quad" thechnique outside. It wasn't much of a challenge. The worst of it is when he stacks Dooming Darkness, Boil Blood, and his poison DoT. Hope you can heal yourself quick. Anyway I didn't see it as much of a big deal myself, maybe I just got lucky.
