You can make these griffins spawn!

These griffins are actually on a spawn cycle that involves the Bixies. So if you want to relive the old days a bit but find East Commonlands devoid of griffins, here's what you do.

You need to go through a short cycle of Bixies spawning. Now it is very probable that you will not find a single Bixie on Track either. This is because the bixies are KOS to Orc pawns and vice versa and when these meet eachother, they fight. The Bixie always looses.

The spawnpoint of the first Bixie in the cycle is around -430 +1200. However I am pretty sure she can have placeholders. Also, once it spawns (or its placeholder) it starts to wander, so you will probably find this spot empty. This is why you have to start laying waste to the zone first. This is actually where the old adagio of "kill everything in zone" comes from when people talk about tactics trying to spawn certain nameds: you are in fact killing a Placeholder that wandered from his spawn-location.

Now keep an eye on that location I mentioned, because after a while (not too long)something will spawn there, hopefully a Bixie. Kill it before an Orc pawn does, though I have no clue wether a player needs to make the kill. After a while, another Bixie spawned at this location and a second one somewhere else. I kept killing lots of other mobs too, just to make room for bixie spawns. Then, after you have killed these two, I noticed a small legion of Bixies spawning near the house of Altunic Jartin, near the far end of the zone connecting to West Commons. At least 6 or 7 spawned in a clump and immediately started wandering. Kill them all, and the next time I looked on track, a griffin had spawned on the loc mentioned above!

A while later, I saw another 4 bixies on track, and killed them. Quit soon after that a second griffin spawned, not on that particular location but more in the middle of the zone and a little more to the North. After that I did not see any new bixies spawn.

I am pretty sure about that Bixie spawn having a placeholder. This is why we do not see more griffins in the zone, since if there were no placeholders, all the bixies would be killed over time by Orc pawns, who would keep the spawn cycle going untill griffins would spawn. I am also pretty sure I saw a large spider spawn on that spot after I killed the first two cycles of bixies. I have no clue wether timing plays a role, in that you need to kill all the bixies fast or some.

Have fun! I sure had for an hour or two. :D

What an animal

The first time that I saw one was when my friend Vildivin told me that she had seen one (this is in EC). I followed her o the secret in and she said that she say it there. I also saw a sign that said 'Plague' on it. She then told me it was the wrong spot. So I followed her over to where Loric the Tailor is located and then I saw it. It was a most awsome sight. I saw another after that. But today I saw one when I wasnt doin anything. Didn't even kill a bixie or wisp. So I went to the top of the hill that it was by and watched it. Then I thought to myself "Why dont I follow it." Well, tha wasn't to bright of me. I was under it at an abanden house when it turned around and hit me, I went from %100 to %13 in one hit! "What power." I thought to myself. And since I was lvl 11 I lost all my stuff, and re-spawned in EAST FREEPORT. So when I got back I checked to make sure that it was gone. Thank god it was. I just grabbed my 70 plat, 9 gold, 8 silver and 5 copper. Plus all my other stuff including mw sword, Edge of the TaskMaster, 10 damage and 23 delay time. So now I'm more cautious around them.

I just saw one of these outside the Inn in EC the other day. I was shocked. At level 50 the thing was LB to me. Poor low level folk trying to kill Orc Pawns and Fire Beetles wouldn't stand a chance.

So, I was a good samaratin and killed it. Little did I know several lowbies in the area had been keeping an eye on the scary beast since it was near the merchants, and were very thankful when I took it out. Smiley: smile

I was running my 33 Necro last night trying to finally break the level 34 spell wall when I saw it. I was just a bit north east of the 2 rangers and the merchant.

The Griffin came flying in from the West heading East along the North border at about 11pm gametime.

He conned Red, but I'm a Necro so I thought I'd give it a whack.

I hit it with Dooming Darkness (slow DOT), Boil Blood, Heart Flutter, Disease Cloud and Vampire Embrace with no problems. But it resisted my Fear spell. So I ordered my skelly into the fight with Taunt set to off, and let the thing chase after me.
With it's speed reduced it never came close to catching me and once the DOTs dropped it to about 30% it started to leave. I simply refreshed a few of the DOTs, and raised my 1HB and Offense skills helping Bonehead finish it off.

Total loot? 3pp. 4 silver and some decent experience.

Magic attacks only?
# Aug 14 2003 at 3:46 AM Rating: Decent
Just ran into one of these puppies, but the technique I'd been using for Griffawns didn't work. I rooted, snared, DoTed, and then pumped half a quiverful of arrows into the thing with nary a hit. I suspect, therefore, that only magic attacks will work against this thing (i.e. magic arrows). Archers take note!

be careful; griffins are becoming much more common in EC recently... saw 3 of them in one pretty short session, in the general area of orc1 ...

somehow, it is indifferent to my erudite chanter =) (I was not invisible)

Conned yellow to a 35 Mage
# Dec 18 2002 at 9:22 AM Rating: Decent
I spent weeks here hunting wisps as a level 11 - 16 Mage and I never saw a single griffin. I had not played my Mage for a few months and last night I went here to spend some time with my 35 Mage before I went to more challenging zones and of course there is a griffin flying about. It conned yellow to me and I just did not want to fight it after spending so long not playing my Mage.

Wouldn't have been a good idea. EVEYBODY is KOS to that thing. After getting killed once and more importantly spending many a nervous day in EC in my younger levels. I finally saw this thing the other day.. REVENGE.. Rooted it. Walked in to get hit (aggroing my pet) then took a step back to nuke it and refresh my roots. Unfortunately my worthless pet didn't make it through the battle but after my little floating weapons went bye-bye, the griffen only needed one more Discordant Mind to get a one-way ticket to the Happy Hunting Grounds.

Robe of Tashani: 500 pp.
Ancient Tome of Necromantic Magic: 400 pp.
Tiny Dagger: 1 sp.

Finally being able to take revenge on those that terrorized you: .... Priceless!

Wow! Talk about an insane case of irony. Right after I questioned the Griffin's complete existence (because I've been bound to EC for over a week and haven't seen one), I am killed by one this morning. No joke. I think it might hate dark races and has aggro towards them.

Delivered two 94 dmg hits to me and "POW!", dead dark elf. :(

They do in fact exist. I also saw one at the tunnel entrance with the name Jesper. However, that one had a name and didn't aggro me. The one that killed me was aptly named "A Griffin". So it was the daddy of the bunch.

1) Whoever questioned their existence brings a new definition to the word N00B
2) They aggro everything! You are nothing special
3) Jesper was a either a mage pet or a player in different form... any "named" griff in EC is a player f&^&in with you...

The old days..
# Feb 14 2002 at 4:31 PM Rating: Decent
I started playing EQ 2 days after it's release. When I could get on without crashing there was only a handful of people in the east commons. I think level 7 was the highest in the zone. At that time there were 3 griffs flying around at all times. People would spin around in circles every few minutes to keep track of the Griffs.

Griff to Inn2! Would get your heart pumping....I haven't seen a griff in EC since I came back to EQ for Luclin.

I remember those days. Where brotherhood was srtong. Now brothers are scatterd around. Where the higher levels wouldn't think twice about helping their lower brtheren. Now most of the high levels would rather watch a level 2 be eaten alive by a puma and laugh then cast heal or SoW.

The bad Griffin in NK is called GrimFeather
RE: Griffin
# Feb 20 2003 at 8:05 PM Rating: Decent
GrimFeather is not bad as long as you land snare on him or otherwise get him slowed or feared. The one to really watch out for is the Silver Griff. Since most griffs were mele, I thought I'd tried to take him on. He's immuned to snare/root spells. Gate saved my life. But by the time I got gate off, he'd taken 2/3's of my HP, debuffed me

I am a Level 22 Wiz on Druzzil Ro.
I have been Soloing Most of the various Griffs in NK for several DAYS!
They spawn at various levels there. Simply con it.. and see what it is!
There is One who is really bad@$$.. Cant remember his name.. but look him up on the bestiary. He is nasty.
Simple to solo Yellow or blue Griffs as a Wiz. Tishans Clash to stun. Enstill. Force shock for 175.. Then Lightning bolt 2-3 times.. and loot.
Stay near the tower. And Work from there. Keep your Shieldskin up... it will save you several hits if enstill breaks. AND.. if worse comes to worse back up to the guards. They will kill it.

Actually, the answer is uh..YES! Once in a while, at least in east commons, 6 bixies will spawn at a single point and make their merry way around the zone. Kill them all and you'll soon be hearing "Griffin sighted near inn1, tunnel, etc..!" I went around killing all the bixies I could find once and soon enough there were 3, yes 3, griffins wreaking havoc all over EC.;)

Story after story about evil deeds done for the sport of hurting others are found here. In the for what it's worth department I personally was waiting for the boat in Oasis and someone trained a SG into the masses of lower levels. I charmed the giant and led him to his death in the sand dunes saving several dozen lower level players caught unaware. This does not make me a hero because I did it for the money but the question is should bards be given a good name because of the actions of one loot motivated level 50 Bard? Think before trashing an entire class based on the actions of a few of their members.
