The shadowmen come in the classes of Warrior, Monk, Cleric and Necromancer. The Necromancers tend to look like books, while the Priests have the appearance of Snow cones. The Warriors tend to show their weapons, while the monks are invisible (save for their name).

Shadowmen hang out at fixed locations, usually in groups from four to seven. They do not have a huge aggro radius, but are social so Harmony can be very handy in fighting them.

Shadowmen move very very quickly. If you're trying to run from them, you will need a high level bard with a magical drum to be able to escape them, they can outrun all forms of Spirit of Wolf.

Shadowmen drop numerous items for numerous quests. So many items are dropped that it can be a maddening experience trying to get the one you need. It has been theorized that the shadowmen in different zones are more likely to drop the various items.

Most of the items they drop are Temporary meaning they will disappear if you log out.

In Innothule Swamp:

  • This mob spawns at -420,+325.

In Nektulos Forest:

  • This mob spawns at -1450,+824.

Shadowed Book

I was killing shadowed men last night and a "Shadowed Book" dropped off a Necro. No Rent. The lvl 60 druid that was killing the Shadows with me for a rapier said it was an ultra rare drop and used for a necro book quest. I sent out tells to a few uber necros, and the best I could get is that it is for a broken quest at the temple of solsek ro. I hailed the two necro Quest NPC's and neither mentioned anything about the book. I went all through the temple and couldn't find any reference to it. Does anyone have any further information on this quest?

Update on the book, killed over 130 of em in WC and LS with my 46 ranger to get it for my 20 necro, and have seen everything drop BUT the book. Unfortunately the trick of handing them weapons doesn't work anymore, they just hand it back and tell me they don't need this item, thanks anyway. Driving me insane!!! Going back for more today already have first 2 books Thank god they arent no rent too.
RE: Shadowed Book
# Dec 04 2001 at 8:43 PM Rating: Decent

The book is actually very common. Every time you see a Shadowed Man holding a book, you can hand him a 1-handed weapon and he'll wield the weapon whilst moving the book to his inventory. The book will disappear from view, and you'll see him holding the weapon you just gave him.

When he's killed, you can loot the book from him.

I did this with my 50ish Druid, and it worked just fine. I learned about it after killing shadowed men for quite some time, and not getting a book to loot.

You'll need to be high enough level to get close to them without getting aggroed by them. Perhaps Sneak would work, but I've never tried it.
RE: Shadowed Book
# Dec 16 2002 at 2:40 PM Rating: Decent
This DOES NOT WORK. You give them the weapons and he hands it back to you and says he doesn't need that item. If you charm him and give him the weapons, then break charm and kill him he will only have the weapons you gave him in his inventory. Just because he has the book when you look at him does not mean that he possesses that book. Just like guards always appear in full armor, but if you kill them they dont have any armor at all on them. Its just a graphic for that creature.
I've been camping these guys for 8 days so far - between 6 - 12 hours per camp. I've spent over 60 hours trying to get this %#@^$ book and it has never dropped. Yet, everytime I run into someone who's camping these guys for essence of shadow they say that they've seen them drop a couple of time. So far I've sold over 100 celestial essences while waiting for this thing. This is the worst camp I've ever done- worse than the Aegis of Life, far worse than paw of opolla. They need to fix this. Perhaps if every shadowed man droped a 'drop of shadow' and you have to turn in 1000 of these. At least then you can make progress toward getting this book, rather than playing the kill-a-mob lottery (you have a 1 in a million chance of winning)

The quest isn't broken.
The quest starts in the Temple of Solusek Ro.
Here's the quest info.

---------------------------------
Vurgo promises to scribe to you the Word of Darkness if you bring him the following: A Shadow Book from shadowmen, A Book of Darkness from an Erudite Magician in a Tower by Lake Rathe and A Book of Frost from the Icy Goblin in Permafrost. To get the Book of Darkness for this quest, go to the dock nearest to the Rathe Mountain zone in Lake Rathe. Straight ahead is a tower...swim out to it. Inside of the tower are two Erudites: A Male Magician and a Female Wizard. They are both blue to a level 26 Necromancer, but the magician always has a pet, and they will hammer you pretty badly, so you will need a healer. Killing either Erudite causes faction hits: - Guards of Qeynos, - Order of Three, + Bloodsabres, + Opal Darkbriar. As an uncommon drop, they will drop the Book of Darkness. Bring him these, 300 gp and the note he gives you to get the item. It is no drop item only useable by Necromancers, so there is no reason for a non necro to do the quest
---------------------------------

The reward is a +45 mana book that has a right click spell effect 'Allure of Death' which I think is a necro health for mana spell, level 20.

I just spent about an hour camping the shadowed men and got tired. I'm a 50 monk with the first 2 books, letting my level 15 necro loot the last one. Then we're gonna multi-quest. Anyway, hope that helps.

Hmm, i saw the book 2 times in 2hours. Couldn't kill the mobs with them cause they popped together. We were a 27 Necro, 23 Mag, 26 Ranger and got smoked twice trying. We managed to take the pets out too. The necro that had the books were tough, as i was hit with a 145 poison blast.
I also managed to get a shadowed 2 Handed Hammer that night. It was NoDrop NoRent Lore Magic, the works. Any ideas on it?

Etched Peridot of Nature

When camping Shadowed men in Nek, one dropped an Etched Peridot of Nature, magic and lore item. Does anyone have any idea what this might be for?

I also looted one in WC when trying to get a patch of shadow for the Acumen Mask quest. No other website has any mention of them, this is the first I've found. Must be apart of a new quest, maybe a SoL/ToSR quest? speculation I know but hey, just brainstorming. Nor have been able to find anything out about this item from higher level players and various guilds. Very mysterious indeed...

I had a similar experience in WC 2 nights ago. The Etched Peridot of Nature dropped (which is also listed as NONE/NONE for class/race. It is not NODROP so it can be bought/sold/traded/gifted.

I also found one in Lavastorm off of a Shadowed Man. looked for it in the quest links but came up with nothing. Will ask around my Guild and see if anyone knows anything about needing a Etched Peridot of Nature. Sounds like a quest piece though.

Just curious... I haven't even started my acumen mask quest yet but it says on this web page that I need a patch of shadow and it drops off of the shadow men... well above on the list it seems to be missing. Is it a very very rare drop or is it so common that it doesn't even bare mentioning?
And I'd like it if someone would tell me where it drops please.

I was hunting the shadowed men in lfay the other night trying to get a shining stone or shadowed gloves for enchanter quest. I found that the patches of shadow were fairly common drops, at least 1 out 3 shadow men seemed to have one.

Uhm, I was wondering if anyone else had this happen, but I play an erudite necro on the ayonne ro server(sp wrong, I know:) And I was running thru the commons at night yesterday, and being an erudite, I had deadeye or shadowsight on, can't remember which, but I happened to pass by this camp, and I saw what when I clicked on to target, came up as a shadowed man???
I thought you weren't supposed to be able to see them? or are they just normal invis, and not anything special?

I was wondering if anyone had a list of which loot items drop in which zones? It is rumored that specific items only drop in specific camps of Shadowed Men. Please reply to this post if you what you looted and from which camp it was looted.

OK, here is my experience. I have now camped Nek for about 14 or so hours and finally - yeah - got my Hand of Shadows (and turned them in for Shadowbound Gloves). In this time I saw everything drop except:

Globe of Shadow
Shadowed Whip
Shadowed Ball

My suspicion is I would see those drop as well if I camped long enough. I further suspect the same is true of all the various zones that have Shadowedmen although this is pure speculation so take it for what it's worth.

The book cannot be opened or read and is obviously a quest item.

Does anyone have any leads on this?

Yes, it is part of the quest for the Orc Impaler, a Ranger only weapon quest that starts in Kithicor but has most of the legwork in LFay (damned brownies!). So if you kill this guy and there are any rangers wandering around, give them a shout and see if they want it.

Safely in freeport now.
Any good ways for a 29 Necro to solo these?
# Apr 13 2001 at 12:15 AM Rating: Default
Ok i need a Harvester and since the quest lists as low as lvl 25, i figured at 29 it'd be a breeze. Well i wanted to check to see how i could handle a camp of Shadow Men seeing as they sounded the hardest to kill for an item involved in quest (Shadowed Scythe). Well i went to Nek Forest to try and died within 30 seconds of attacking the first one lol. Anyone got any special tips for taking these bad boys down? I was gonna try to DOT and FD fast so that they'd keep taking dmg from the DOT while i was safe FD but nooooooo there had to be friggin casters to get off that cast JUST when i lay down with FD and see through (. How does one solo these? I have some thoughts but i lost lvl 29 last time and i'm not too hot on the idead of trying again yet hehe. If anyone is willing try this: Hit first with Screaming Terror mezzz.... send pet after others.... Mezz and Fear another so it ends up forgeting u and faaaar away.... repeat till u have only ONE left right there..... then do what necros are made to do: Snare, Fear DOT like mad, and throw in a DD or two. Plz if anyone tries this and it works tell me ok? Thanks.

Not positive but id think you gotta fear first then terror them....Terror will wipe the hate list so in opposite youll wipe the list then fear which will add you again. But there gonna returnt to camp so when theres one left do what you gotta do fast:)

A couple of days ago I running to mistmore to get my scepter from the named shadow man and maybe increase my faction a little with ro, gave the guy a few flowers invising everytime, then a delf walkedaround the opposite side agroed one me, within seconds the whole areainside the gate was kickin my **** made a huge train to Lfay and decided it was time to go. On the way out i thought i would check out how many spawned at the camp in Lfay but didnt know the loc so i walked around a bit and saw a shadowed man walking around. thought hey mabye someone trained the last one out of the camp. Anyways I figured id follow it back to its camp, I didnt realize it until about prolly 3 laps that he was walking in circles. so i decided alright I'll stop here and wait for him to comeback after i make a pet and all that good stuff. (walked to fast to do it and catch him again) set my self up and was waiting for him to come back, right about the time i got fm i got up looked around and saw a small thing on my screen thinking yeah this is it (thinking it was the cone he was carrying, upon further inspection it happened to be a brownie already starting to cast a spell, took off running while my pet distracted it, got well out of range and FD'd, first encounter with a brownie I thought the creeping crud was gunna kill me but after 2 bubbles of health is wore off and i saw the guy walk right by my body. So to sum this out of control post up, might have been a one time occurance but there was a roamer in Lfay a few days ago, only downfall is the brownies that can come by.

Btw the spot i decided to wait for him at was to the right if your zoneing in from GFay, go down a valley like the path startes to, just dont follow it out of the valley, at the end of the valled turn around and wait for him to walk buy, he will walk down into the valley, and before he's out of your vision he will turn around and walk on the opposite side of you. (would give the loc but i have so many written down i forogot which one it is )

The roamer wasn't a glitch. I saw him too. Almost exact same area you did. Very close to the Gfay zone, wandering near the zone wall ( I saw the pained unicorn too. pretty) Scared me to death when I saw him because I was only lvl 13. But he didn't agro me. I didn't con him, but he came real close. Undead and summoned always seem to agro me. Are they undead or just summoned?
Do they not Agro druids, or are they indifferent to everyone? Are they related to druids somehow? Why are they on our shrine?
Hey, in stead of camping the roamers, grab a druid and have them harmony the camp of them on the shrine. No brownies there :). Any class with the mezz-type spells should be able to pull them one at a time.
Oh, and if they are summoned, druids have sweet spells to deal with them.

My you were lucky...the brownie village is to the right of the Gfay ent (facing away from it) and many wandering brownie scouts. The Shadowed man camp is sortof straight out from the Ak'anon zone and do the left a bit. They stand on this sorta temple thing with steps.

I wasn't THAT lucky. I think I saw it on a CR after being killed by a scout. Grumble. *sigh*. I pass the village all the time going to the sister camp. It is one of my favorite hunting spots right now because the xp and loot are so sweet.
The scouts seem to only hit near a small area at the zone wall, and i've never actually seen them spawn near the brownie village, which is odd, because you would think they would need to report there...but let's not give them any ideas. I mean, have you ever noticed that we never actually see D'vinn's caravan taking him to Crushbone through Gfay?
Anyway, if you haven't seen it yet, look on the lfay discussion. there is a great map link for the brownie scouts. It's been true to my experience on quell server.
But what do those shadow dudes have to do with DRUIDS?
