The shadowmen come in the classes of Warrior, Monk, Cleric and Necromancer. The Necromancers tend to look like books, while the Priests have the appearance of Snow cones. The Warriors tend to show their weapons, while the monks are invisible (save for their name).

Shadowmen hang out at fixed locations, usually in groups from four to seven. They do not have a huge aggro raduis, but are social so Harmony can be very handy in fighting them.

Shadowmen move very very quickly. If you're trying to run from them, you will need a highlevel bard with a magical drum to be able to escape them, they can outrun all forms of SOW.

Shadowmen drop numerous items for numerous quests. So many items are dropped that it can be a maddening experience trying to get the one you need. It has been theorized that the shadowmen in different zones are more likely to drop the various items.

Most of the items they drop are "no rent" meaning they will dissapear if you log out.

I was killing shadowed men last night and a "Shadowed Book" dropped off a Necro. No Rent. The lvl 60 druid that was killing the Shadows with me for a rapier said it was an ultra rare drop and used for a necro book quest. I sent out tells to a few uber necros, and the best I could get is that it is for a broken quest at the temple of solsek ro. I hailed the two necro Quest NPC's and neither mentioned anything about the book. I went all through the temple and couldn't find any reference to it. Does anyone have any further information on this quest?

Update on the book, killed over 130 of em in WC and LS with my 46 ranger to get it for my 20 necro, and have seen everything drop BUT the book. Unfortunately the trick of handing them weapons doesn't work anymore, they just hand it back and tell me they don't need this item, thanks anyway. Driving me insane!!! Going back for more today already have first 2 books Thank god they arent no rent too.

The book is actually very common. Every time you see a Shadowed Man holding a book, you can hand him a 1-handed weapon and he'll wield the weapon whilst moving the book to his inventory. The book will disappear from view, and you'll see him holding the weapon you just gave him.

When he's killed, you can loot the book from him.

I did this with my 50ish Druid, and it worked just fine. I learned about it after killing shadowed men for quite some time, and not getting a book to loot.

You'll need to be high enough level to get close to them without getting aggroed by them. Perhaps Sneak would work, but I've never tried it.

This DOES NOT WORK. You give them the weapons and he hands it back to you and says he doesn't need that item. If you charm him and give him the weapons, then break charm and kill him he will only have the weapons you gave him in his inventory. Just because he has the book when you look at him does not mean that he possesses that book. Just like guards always appear in full armor, but if you kill them they dont have any armor at all on them. Its just a graphic for that creature.
I've been camping these guys for 8 days so far - between 6 - 12 hours per camp. I've spent over 60 hours trying to get this %#@^$ book and it has never dropped. Yet, everytime I run into someone who's camping these guys for essence of shadow they say that they've seen them drop a couple of time. So far I've sold over 100 celestial essences while waiting for this thing. This is the worst camp I've ever done- worse than the Aegis of Life, far worse than paw of opolla. They need to fix this. Perhaps if every shadowed man droped a 'drop of shadow' and you have to turn in 1000 of these. At least then you can make progress toward getting this book, rather than playing the kill-a-mob lottery (you have a 1 in a million chance of winning)

The quest isn't broken.
The quest starts in the Temple of Solusek Ro.
Here's the quest info.

---------------------------------
Vurgo promises to scribe to you the Word of Darkness if you bring him the following: A Shadow Book from shadowmen, A Book of Darkness from an Erudite Magician in a Tower by Lake Rathe and A Book of Frost from the Icy Goblin in Permafrost. To get the Book of Darkness for this quest, go to the dock nearest to the Rathe Mountain zone in Lake Rathe. Straight ahead is a tower...swim out to it. Inside of the tower are two Erudites: A Male Magician and a Female Wizard. They are both blue to a level 26 Necromancer, but the magician always has a pet, and they will hammer you pretty badly, so you will need a healer. Killing either Erudite causes faction hits: - Guards of Qeynos, - Order of Three, + Bloodsabres, + Opal Darkbriar. As an uncommon drop, they will drop the Book of Darkness. Bring him these, 300 gp and the note he gives you to get the item. It is no drop item only useable by Necromancers, so there is no reason for a non necro to do the quest
---------------------------------

The reward is a +45 mana book that has a right click spell effect 'Allure of Death' which I think is a necro health for mana spell, level 20.

I just spent about an hour camping the shadowed men and got tired. I'm a 50 monk with the first 2 books, letting my level 15 necro loot the last one. Then we're gonna multi-quest. Anyway, hope that helps.

Hmm, i saw the book 2 times in 2hours. Couldn't kill the mobs with them cause they popped together. We were a 27 Necro, 23 Mag, 26 Ranger and got smoked twice trying. We managed to take the pets out too. The necro that had the books were tough, as i was hit with a 145 poison blast.
I also managed to get a shadowed 2 Handed Hammer that night. It was NoDrop NoRent Lore Magic, the works. Any ideas on it?
