Returned ranger found it

I've returned to the Glade and I'm going through all the old Ranger quests.
I had been clearing the Undead/Ghoul camp in the south-eastern corner of West Karana (with Ghoul Yeoman, green to lvl 25). The Ghoul Messenger came up on track for me as I sat at the North side of the camp. Not sure if clearing the camp helped. I started running north-east towards him and he was running towards me. I killed him at -2770,-14840. I am level 25 and he is level 27. I won the battle with 1 bubble of HP left. I have Trueshot armor, random leather armor besides (I'm avoiding the Defiant gear), the Faydark Champion's Long Sword, and a bronze short spear.

No level requirement on this quest - just gave the Strategic Map of Kithicor to Morin Shadowbane on a L1 HEF ranger and received the SSoM.

Very nice wep for folks lacking the cash for a SSoY - currently 5.5k plat on Fippy.

Got Him
# Mar 04 2003 at 6:39 PM Rating: Decent
Well, took us almost 3 hours of tracking through the zone, as well as making random stops by known sighting locations, and we finnally found him. Lets just say that Fast is not the right word his speed. Had I not rooted him, he would have outrun my 35 Ranger with SOW quickly.

We had spent most of our time floating between the undead camp and the bandit camp with no luck, and were about to head out when we decided to give it one more evening. We killed off the undead camp, were looting the corpses, and something bumped into me. Look up, and there he was, running at full speed by me. He was indifferent to us until rooted, then he got mad.

Fortunately root held through the entire battle, as snare would not take hold ( tried 4 times ). Glad I had some backup. Now, off to get my new sword.

He crossed my way today, behind him running a grizzly bear, was looking like if the bear was attacking him and he was running away. I ha no problem to follow him with JBoots, even though i was slightly overloaded. So, at least when he is not attacked he cannot outrun SoW.
When i was on same high with him he attacked me and the bear continued running (so he was not attacking the ghoul). I snared him and DoT'ed him to death, my first snare sticked to him, so he can be snared.

I killed him last night -- Had no idea what he was or what he was for. He popped on track and was DB to a 30 Druid. He was pretty easy though. He runs very fast just an FYI. Dropped the map --

I camp the bandits guarding the low spot in the road near the bandit camp. I sit above the road on the hill and have noted that the messenger often passes within site of this location

I just killed this guy last night. Never heard of him or saw before. I was ruinning through the zone and decided to stop and kill a few bandits. Saw him on track and went to see. Will he did run pretty fast but being a 51 druid he went down like a rock. 2 starfires and 1 root = 1400 hit points. Looted the "A strategic map of kithicor" Did not know what it was for so I looted it. Looked up the quest only by zone. The drop item is not listed in the quest items listings section on this site. Anyway I can't use it and thought is there any way to MQ this thing.

Map is for short sword of Morin quest for rangers only. If you kill him again, it would be nice of you to shout out to any rangers in zone that he is down and let them loot the corpse. The sword itself is kind of crappy considering how high the ghoul messenger is, but a lot of people do it for the faction hits and the satisfaction of completing a quest.

youve never seen him because you never look.
He is a rare spawn that drops an item you turn in for a nice lil sword. Ranger only, rangers can track, therefor, easy for rangers to find him
A way to make the Messenger pop?
# Dec 01 2001 at 5:13 PM Rating: Default
Has anyone tried having a friend go to Morin Shadowbane (SSoM Questgiver in Kithicor) and activate the quest, while you yourself wait in West Karana for the Messenger to spawn.

I guess I mean to ask, "Does anyone know if talking to Morin will get the Messenger to spawn as well"?

Its always a good idea to have a mage SUMMON you arrows. I understand this is a difficult thing to anticipate, and when you log they go... but if you believe you may run into such a vile creature, Magical arrows have a good range and awesome damage, and will strike the INVULNERABLE! :) Whenever I play my ranger, If I come accross a Mage, I usually try to get some. :) And if a critter seems to look nasty I arm them. :)

I was lvl 22 when my RL buddy took me to WK to do this sword quest. We sat the whole day near the Ogre camp. Then I had to log but right before I sat down, I hit track and there he was. My friend chased after him with Selo's, turn out he was at the 2 merchant houses near the Ogre camp. My friend caught up to him and melee'ed him at 47, while I stood back and snared and tossed DDs his way. He went down pretty fast. Then, now at lvl 45, I was walking through WK and just passing by the houses where I saw him run by way back when, and there he was again running in between the houses. I had sow on but I didn't bother to kill him, I already have the sword =P

I just got my rune of ivy from Redwind and couldn't find a tp anywhere. I shouted all the way back to WK and still no luck. I hit my track just as I was about to zone to NK and there he was. I decided, what the heck, might as well get him on the way. He is blue to my lvl 30 Ranger.
I ran him down with SOW and cast snare. It held and he came for some punishment. I took about 1/4 of his health from him when a werewolf ran up and joined in the fray. Now I started taking a beating.
I decided that better to come back another day then die today so I ran and zoned. So, be careful where you solo him so that you don't aggro anything else.
BTW-I ended up running all the way to FP, got a bind, then TP'd to BB and ran to Dagnor's Cauldron. Killed 4 Aqua Goblin Tidal Lord's before I got a Water Ring. Took boat from BB to FP, got a Fire Emerald, ran to Kith forest and turned all in for my Ivy Etched Bracer. WOOT! 1st piece of armor from quest.
Goblin Messenger, you're next.

I camped this guy today and ran across a necro that cast sense undead poof there was the messenger. Might be a good idea to take your friendly necro buddy to help track this guy down.

Soloable at 30.

I ran across this nasty little bugger when I was 28 - he ran right across the road west of the ogres, going like a bat out of hell. WTH, I thought, he's blue, let's try it. WRONG! I'm glad I had Root memmed - it was the only thing that let me get away. Like all ghouls, regular arrows have no effect. Going solo toe to toe with him without your level 30 DS and DoT is asking for trouble. Anyway, I made it to the zone, having run out of aggro range a ways back, with a single health bubble to my name. The Messenger was still around half health when last I saw him.

Fine, I said, I'll get my 28 wizard buddy, and nuke its a$$ to death. No luck. I saw it pop up on track precisely ONCE, and then never got within visual range of it. We spent several Norrath days trying to get him to spawn, and no dice.

Time passes - I make 30, then spend 30-32 in Everfrost soloing wooly mammoths (wonderful money, XP so-so). At 32, I decide to try this guy again. This time, I made some silver-tipped arrows so I could use my bow. So, I went back to WK, and killed bandits for a while, passing the time. (Everyone in Qeynos loves me now, and the reward for the sashes is still nice.)

Finally, I decided to try clearing the undead ruins out, in the SE corner of the zone, as suggested by other posters below. As soon as I killed the last skeleton (didn't check track before, it may have popped sooner), the Ghoul Messenger popped up on track. He seemed to spawn just north of the ruins, but I had a lot of trouble localizing him with track. Finally, I steadied down on him, and got an arrow into him as he headed north across the road, up the hill, almost due north of the ruins. He turned, I snared him, swarmed him, and started bowkiting him, also casting ignite. I got him to about half health using 2 swarm spells and 30 silver tipped arrows. Then, I finished him up with melee, losing about 2 health bubbles in the process. He dropped the note, and turning it in to Morin was routine.

So - lesson learned - if you can't get him to spawn, try clearing the undead ruins out. If that doesn't work, try killing the bandits on the road, then the ones in the camp, then clear the udead out. That should duplicate what did it for me.

Soloing
# Jul 29 2001 at 7:39 PM Rating: Default
Soloed him as a 30 ranger. Took me down to 1.5 bubs of health, but got the map. Hits for about 50 but will turn and run when he gets low on hp. Snared, hit with a couple of fire spells (couldn't find a mage to summon any magic arrows for me) and one stinging swarm, but basically just hacked at him for most of it. He seems to run back and forth in a ravine in the hills that ends at the ogre camp (at least the last 2 times I've seen him).

Easily solo-able at 30. I was running through the other night, saw him (blue) on tracking. Decided to go for it, since a guildie had a new 12th Ranger...

...and proceeded to run around tracking for nearly 15 minutes r/l time! He is fast. Without SoW, this would be nearly impossible. The delay gave me time to contact the guildie, and get her ported in. I even had to fight off a VERY green bandit that aggro'd me, mid-chase.

When I finally caught him, I Snared (obviously), Flamelicked, and meleed. The 2 damageshields Rangers get at 30 surely helped, and I was down maybe 2 bubbs of life when it was over. So, rangers, trust the /con on this ghoul. At 30, he /cons blue, and fights blue.

No sweat for two lvl 30 rangers, after you find him that is.

My EQ wife Merinu and I spent two full EQ days casting around on track trying to find this guy without success. We focused on the Eastern half of the zone, and per one of the posts below cleared the undead camp twice without apparent results.

After killing Redwind in Everfrost the following day we were running back to HH when we saw him on track at 2PM. He ran right up and attacked us on the road near the shop marked #21 on the EQAtlas map, we didn't even have to pull him! We were worried he might be a serious undercon ala Dvinn in Crushbone, but was no sweat for the two of us (both untwinked lvl 30 rangers). Dropped the map, which I turned in to Morin in Kith for nearly a blue bub of xp and the 6/22 sword.

I would think your group should have no problem. First time I killed him, I was level 22 and was with level 24 Paladin. I would snare and then one of us would draw his attention and pull him backwards while the other would stand back and shoot steel tip arrows and cast spells. We ended the fight with both of us at about half life.

my group consists of a 22 level paladin a 22 level enchanter a 20 level wizard a 16th level ranger (me) and a 21 level enchanter. sometimes there is a 16th level rogue. is this a strong enough group to take the ghoul messenger?
