These mobs are MADE for charmers and kiters, as they're relatively easy kills, don't summon, low resists, give very decent XP and inhabit a beach which is almost perfectly flat and devoid of structures which might block line of sight. Being animals, tailor-made for druids to charm, too.
Their XP also appears to be buffed a bit. I killed a few of these with a duo of 85 druid and 74 bard and each kill, with no LotD, gave 4.8% of an aa to the druid and 15.2-15.5% to the bard. The gators were 78.
In contrast, killing polar bears in Icefall, which is currently a HOT zone, give 5.8% of an aa at 85 and 16.1-16.4% at 74. That's for level 77 bears. Considering this is a hot zone, the gators are clearly giving more xp than what their extra +1 in level would warrant.
Level 75 grizzly bears in LP, a camp which unlike the gators, is almost always available, render 3.6%/12.7% aaxp for a level 75 bear.
Tha gators also run at low HP, something none of bears do, so that's a factor to consider as well.
All in all, these reptiles are an excellent camp to churn out some experience, for classes that can charm and/or kite them.
Keep in mind these aa values are for a duo. Soloers will get higher mileage!

Full burn j-5 merc lvl 88 nukes for 26,900 along with 88 fire pet nuking 6418 still cant keep up with spawn times.Nice camp with fast spawn times.

I do not believe these things drop any spells at all anymore. Spent my whole weekend camping them along the beaches. Must have killed in excess of 500, not one single spell. Could be I wish just unlucky, but i doubt it.
Boxing them is a nuisance as you have to be practically in the middle of them to be in melee range and as they are always thrashing about, you will be out of range early and often.

I think you just had a run of bad luck. They definitely still drop spells.

Spells drop still and the tombs alot less though.
The "top hit," as listed is apparently a "top hit" on a class with better armor than mine. As a "silkie," but with capped avoidance and mitigation AAs, that same mob hits ME in excess of 2K.
