one time a looong time ago at 3 in the morning i was running around the oasis,i ran into a desert mad man and he said in a snobby english kind of accent "pardon me ,do you have a cup of coffee".
that has only happened one time for me but i assure you it DID happen.hopefully someone out there has had this experience it was funny as hell.

Know whats funny...they are mad walking around the desert. When you think about it you would think the madness would be caused by the lack of fresh water...but heck, they usually carry like 4 flask on em. Go figure. Also, after all the people they killed you would think they would have looted some better armor or ganged up on Lockjaw for his tunic:)

This guy is what stopped me from being a ranger! A green one whipped me sooooo good that I quit my ranger and started a new character back in the day.

Never did like getting handed my ass by a single greenie, considering I couldn't take down any reds that easily by myself, LOL.

Desert Madman were a tough nut to crack in the old days. Many a player died from them. They used to sneak up on you and as soon as you heard their casting, you knew you were in trouble. They were undercons for sure, but then again, most caster mobs were undercons in the old days. We did not have the resists then as we do now.

I always liked it how desert madman used to drop all these waterflasks. Fitting loot for the desert areas that they roam. Just one of the many small touches that make EQ's world come alive so much. :)

Nice to see this mob mentioned as Mob of the Day.

Made the run to oasis to get some spells. Was extra careful, dodging around everything that connned ready to attack. This included desert madmen, although they conned dark blue.
Anyways, in the end, make it to the gypsy camp. I buy my spells and start looking through what else was on sale.
Next thing i know, im rooted and getting blasted 40 hp at a time. I can't even see the caster as im stood in front of a tent. Luckily, I had gate memorised. 1st was interupted, but second got through.
Did me for half my hp in the meantime.

I have noticed since the new patch that fixed the casters IQ, they have been Uber casters. A madman came up to me on the docks and proceeded to smother my arse on the sandy beach. Luckily a healer had just gotten off the boat and heard my cry for help and uber healed me. I then beat the mad man to a pulp.

I would have no doubt lost if a healer had not stepped up to the plate.

It seems that all casters now have the ability to kick arse and take names. I will seek vengence on all Mad men..

I would agree that usually these guys are nothing more than annoying but I have run into some tough ones.

I'm a lvl 16 monk twinked pretty well and a Dark blue Desert madman continually hit me for 75 non-melee and almost got me. Not fun.

In general just con 'em and keep an eye out for them (F9 four times gets a good external view while fighting).

Hope this helps,

I get that too. Annoying as *ell they is. Especialy the ones that cast I've had one agro me (as a level 18 druid to their light blue) from so far away they were a brown twig on a dune. Fortunatly they cast rather weak but they can disrupt your own spells when attacking. I've found if they cast, Melee Em! otherwise keep out of range and blast them, they seem to have a power trade off, one or the other so a caster hits low but a meleer can whoop yah if you aren't ready

When these were white and blue, I would usually avoid the madmen. For the amount of experience you get, you could be fighting something easier which offers better loot. Now that they're green to me, I try to shoot them down before they cause problems since they're aggressive. Also, you need to be careful since some of these are magic users.

They cast low level wiz spells which can do a fair amount of DD.

# Jul 31 2000 at 9:29 AM Rating: Default
The desert madmen suck in comparason to the MM you find in NRO. The DMMs rarely use the high lvl spells, like the 90 pont lightning spell that their compatriots do in NRO. and in both cases the conned white to me. The ones in oasis used burst of flame and some ae cold based attack. while the the ones in NRO used lighning, combuts, and the ae lighning spell. and they chain cast like crazy, unlike the ones in Oasis. So be aware of these bad men in NRO.

Yes, some (maybe all do speak, if you are high enuf lvl). I noticed a madman looking character named Rin Dinstlemoor in East Freeport (near Ikthar's going to zone to West) would sometimes say "might I have some copper?" (I needed to turn the volume almost all the way up to hear him). Upon giving him a cp or 2, he says (in text) something like " Thank you ... no rat ear pie for me tonight." Haven't made or bought a pie for him to see what he says. I would be interested to know if it is part of a quest! That's my 2 cps on this matter!
