So around 2002 looks like opal darkbriar <evil version> had her conversation changed by Sony.
Thanks to some folks on internet found the old everquest help file in the style of a window help file. The one i found was translated from german to english in 2002.
Anyhow in this help file you can find Opal darkbriar<evil version> original greeting and her new greeting:
" Old: Opal Darkbriar says 'Greetings Vaslin.
New: Opal Darkbriar says 'Greetings! You will have to excuse me. I have no time to talk right now and I prefer to be left alone. Please leave. "
This mean that any old quest associated with opal darkbriar (Barn Bloodstone follow up of bayle list quest , and Wand of burning Dead quest) where more than likely broken permanently by this change.
Now it is possible this change went in before 2002 but since that is only dated conversion of this eq help file that is what i based my assumption on.

In East Freeport: Opal is a Necromancer guildmaster.
In West Freeport: Opal is a Wizard guildmaster.
Opal Darkbriar is perhaps one of the strangest oddities in Norrath. According to the tabletop RPG, she is a Dark Elf Cleric guildmaster of the Dismal Rage in East Freeport who uses an artifact to pose as a High Elf Wizard guildmaster of the Academy of Arcana Scientists in West Freeport. The artifact affects her mind if she uses it for too long, making her faction alliances tend more toward the high elf version.
Confusing this matter even further is that one of the historical enemies of the order of Arcane Scientists are the Freeport Militia, who themselves are allied with the evil Opal Darkbriar.
