I happened to nab an actual "Artifact" item near the beginning of the launch of DoD which I tried turning in to him. He handed it back and responded with:

Archaeologist Flottwit says 'Hrm, no, this doesn't look anything like the artifacts I uncovered. You can have it back.'

I have tried the Chitin Blade; the "Blackflame" and a glowstone, so far none works. WIll update as soon as I get him to accept something.
