Small Brick of Ore

I didn't even know these things dropped ore until I suddenly saw one in the loot list.

Turns out these things are really good for farming those Small Brick of Ore you need when you are trying to skill up on your Smithing.

Camp out near Najena entrance. They are easy to pull, not social, and have a decent drop rate. I got 40 bricks from my last run, which directly saved me from buying two stacks of bricks which cost me 13,5pp each in Neriak (15pp each in Oggok).... so overall, roughly 30pp saved on smithing mats while at the same time getting other loot and experience from the Dervishes!

Even when these turn grey I'll still be farming them for bricks so I can reduce the cost of crafting banded, thus increasing the profit margin!

I have been killing dervish for a 3 week. Though very recently they began to hit harder. I use to be able to take 2 them and then recover now, taking one almost kills my pet and me. Also the drops are about 4 to 5 gold and ore, haven't seen any gems or jewelry in a while.

I don't know if something has been changed with these guys recently, but I've always gotten gems off of them as loot - only got ore once?

Unless you have a pet or a tank, you will never get a spell off, these hit EXTREMELY fast but for little damage. You will probably get interrupted EVERY time, considering they hit me about twice a spell casting

Um, I have a DE wizard and solo these all the time. Just make sure it's always rooted. So, yes you can get a spell off. (without a pet)

Roll up your sleeves and fight casters!

You casters simply need more practice casting in combat - my Shadow Knight has been decimating these things and they only interupt my spells maybe on time in four or five.

One of the big problems I've noticed with casters is that they're told to stay out of melee as often as possible - this is horrible advice since it results in them not having any practice casting while being pounded on. I run an Enchanter, Ranger and SK and all three of them have tons of practice casting in melee - as a result, I'm rather adept at timeing my spells between blows from the monsters, plus I'm more likely to get the message that "[I] regain concentration and am able to cast my spell." A buddy has a 19th level Shaman and he regularly gets spells off even after taking 35 point hits.

So all of you casters out there, put down the steins, pick back up your weapons and go melee some blues till you can cast and melee without any problem.

# Aug 02 2001 at 2:19 PM Rating: Default
When the mana runs out it is time to melee. Even if you only hit for 10pts of damage you still are damageing it and many a time I have had to zone cause the caster was oom and medding on the sidelines while I am being pounded on by mobs.
And 10pts of damage here and there quickly add up.

So go out there and give your tanks a hand

OR WE'LL LEAVE YOU THERE MEDDING WITH A REALY MIFFED MOB LOOKING FOR AN EASY KILL

Not to be mean but are you lvl 15 or something. I never want to taunt off a caster if I dont have to.

Your channeling skill goes up even if you dont melee so you dont need to get in there. Some types of spells are more likely to return a "you regain your concentration... " result then others.

I agree with you on this point with one exception. If you use a Damage shield all those hits for minor damage to major damage to the mob. As a druid I cast Thistleshield and then melee it to death watching it hit for 1 to 5 damage doing 7 dmg each time to itself. And if I am worried it is to tough I just run then cast a DOT on it and then start meleeing again. Although I am pretty sure magicians would have it much easier with there better damage shields and a pet.

Casters Dream
# Apr 04 2001 at 8:47 AM Rating: Decent
hehe the guy before me was almost right. What you do is you either use your low level snare spell or higher level root spell and you cast DoT and Damage shields then you melee if it gets too tough you snare it and run cast root and NUKE.
I am a druid and never played a mage class so if you have any differences please state them.

This creature is a dream for me, and should be seriously looked into by any pre-20 player. I am lvl 19 and a half, and I have to say that a lot of my time and money has come from Lavastorm. I LOVE lavastorm. If you need money and XP, come here! As a high elf mage and also an aspiring blacksmith, there is no other creature you want to hunt, really. To be fair though, all the creatures in Lavastorm, even the wimpy *** fire drakes, drop decent loot, 3-6 golds, and the putrid bile they sell can either be sold to rogues for poison or vendors for another 2 golds a pop. Drake Scales sell for 1 or 2 gp a pop. If you are a mage, you will also find your ward summon line of spells in high demand here. it works on the imps and the snakes, altho not the dervs. I digress tho. If you have a mage or play a mage. (EVERYONE should :) ) have him summon you some dim pockets. these help out drastically. You can stack four bars of ore and feel no pain! Just be sure to hurry and sell the **** off, you dont wna to go ld when carrying one of these. If you need a DD to supplement your pet attacks, I recommend shock of blades, they resist fire spells. Also, I recommend earth pets, they will root it. You dont need to worry about other dervs aggroing, you need to worry about fire imps that are always roaming looking for trouble and highly aggressive. Well thats my 2cp worth.

give a shout if you play on Tarrew Marr.
HONK IF YOU LOVE LAVASTORM

Low flying helicopters
# Apr 06 2001 at 10:37 AM Rating: Default
These things are worth fighting if only because they're so neat to fight - you hear this sound which is rather akin to a helicopter and every time they hit you, it sounds like a chainsaw unsuccesfully trying to rut through a rock - it's great! Then, once you've killed it, it'll actually shatter and fling itself all over the place - don't worry though - to loot it, simply click on the center area. As if all of that isn't good enough, unlike other elemental style critters, you don't need magic weapons to hit it.

Really Cool MOB

One of Norrath's great monsters, not for their insane power or amazing loot but simply for visual and aural effect- they look and sound incredible and are a great joy to fight. Aside from that, they give good experience at 17 and are quite easy to kill (or at least they were for me as a bard), and drop nice loot- gold coin, usually, and bricks of ore that, while heavy, sell for a good sum to the local gypsies. All in all, a real treat.

The Rock dervish is by far and away the least exploited creature in the zone, still giving noticible experience upto 16th they drop small ore (15lbs). This is very needed for blacksmithing. Exploit this if you are a warrior, you can tank these things into the ground from 14-16 easy.
Sure are neat looking though.

The sound effects for fighting one and its dying animation are well worth fighting 'em for. They're on my list of Critters You Must See in EQ.

Just get your friendly local Shaman or Mage to summon you a Spirit Pouch/Dimensional Pocket.

Weight problems begone =)

...And for some reason, there are always plenty of inkie mages in this zone.
RE: erk
# Jan 31 2002 at 9:04 AM Rating: Decent
You will always find lots of mages and druids in this zone because of their ward/expulse summoned line of spells. Everything here is summoned, so these two classes really shine here.

Those bricks of ore weigh 10 lbs! My poor little druid had to crawl to the vendor to sell them - but they sell for good money :)
Gate you goof
# Apr 06 2001 at 10:22 AM Rating: Default
If you can kill one of these things with a spell caster, then you've got gate and bind and if you're a druid, you've probobly got SoW as well - I don't want to hear any of your whining as my SK has to walk *everywhere*, can't bind any time he feels like it and has to beg SoW off of folks.
Huh?
