phinny easy without adds
# Feb 22 2004 at 8:32 PM Rating: Default
phinny is easy if you can single him out. me a 65 mage single pulled him by targeting him with eye of zomm, swimming to roof, tapping him with a spell, then swimming to side where pet engaged. if you dont have a pacifier you just have to get lucky that the horses are low enough lvl that they wont agro, or far enough away depending on how phinny swimms up to you. if you try to solo it with horses CHing him you will have trouble.

I had the dubious honor of seeing Phinny die 5 times in a row this weekend. The first time was to another guild as I'd entered the zone. He dropped the backbone, but they kept it for their guild. Oh well. Since I'd read here he is a 12 hr spawn, it was easy for me to plan to be there next time.

Here's the times from my logs for his next 4 spawns. Note that in each case, he was already up when I arrived in the zone, so his actual respawn occured sometime before I got there.

Sat Jan 17 19:16:00 Phinny died
Sun Jan 18 07:48:39 Phinny is up on track
respawn less than 12:32

Sun Jan 18 09:06:34 Phinny died
Sun Jan 18 20:46:06 Phinny is up on track
respawn less than 11:40

Sun Jan 18 21:26:32 Phinny died
Mon Jan 19 08:30:29 Phinny is up on track
respawn less than 11:04

Mon Jan 19 09:07:33 Phinny died
Mon Jan 19 20:43:44 Phinny is up on track
respawn less than 11:36

I suspect that his spawn time is actually 11 hours, not 12.

In the 5 kills I witnessed he dropped 2 epic bits:
kill 1 = Bard backbone
kill 2 = nothing
kill 3 = nothing
kill 4 = nothing
kill 5 = Mage staff

With bard lull lasting only 5 ticks now, I found that I could not pull him solo past his 6 horses. A group of 4 of us: 65 Bard, 65 BST, 63 BST and 63 NEC had no trouble clearing his room and then him.
Really easy

camping phinny
# Jan 07 2004 at 7:29 PM Rating: Decent
There are in my experience many diff ways to pull and kill phinny but I'm gonna share my favorite. It's my favorite method because you have to kill nothing else BUT phinny himself. 4 swirlspine seahorses are guarding the entry to the room holding phinny. sometimes one or more of the horses will see invis so find out which ones do and kill it/them. once you've killed the horse(s) one or two swirlspine guardians will spawn in phinnys lair below which will despawn eventually. now you wait for the horse(s) to respawn and when they do they won't see invis. now hopefully you have a tracker in your group...have them check the guards and wait for them to despawn...as soon as they do have your entire group invis up and run down phinnys lair past the horses running straight for the west wall...do not swim into the lair any more than you have to to get down through the horses...there is a cubby hole in the west wall that is a perfect spot to set up camp....now it's just you and phinny all alone...the seahorses won't aggro down here. if u get killed by phinny you are screwed on CR but don't worry about that unless you are crazy outclassed group you have nothing to worry about phinny is a piece of cake:-) good luck hope this helps
Killing Phinny
# Nov 29 2003 at 2:42 AM Rating: Decent
Phinny is actually pretty easy. As a 63 Wizard I was able to easily tank Phinny with just a 60 Shaman for a healer. So long as you are lvl 60 you can single pull the horses from the top of the Lair. After that use Eye of Talon to see when Phinny swims to the far side of the lair and go down and pull one or both of the Guardian horses up top and kill them. You should be fairly quick from here since the Guardians are on a fairly fast spawn timer. Swim down to the bottom of the lair and kill engage Phinny in the center of the hole, because there is a chance of him gateing with just a wizzy or a tank since stuns take a little longer than bashing to interrupt a spell. You should have some form of worn EB since he is likely to land at least one dispell on you unless you are fairly well equipped. That is pretty much it in a nutshell.

Question is, my wiz needs staff... Will my 65 pally be able to pull him solo and kill him solo? dispell not worried bout, I have click items and can stun his **** the whole fight, but about this solo pulling and solo killing thing, any knight/mellee try to solo him before? Also, how hard does he hit/nuke? Saying he nukes hard isn't informative, saying he nukes for 1k is. Plz be specific. (can 65 solo pull?)
RE: ...
# Dec 19 2003 at 1:26 PM Rating: Decent
I'm fairly sure you can solo him... I killed him yesterday with me (65 Warrior) and my druid (65 Druid)... He did clear all of my buffs, about 9 total... but without buffs I was able to take him down easily... Never had to heal with my druid was down to 79% health when Phinny died...

Not too sure on the guards and whether you can pull single... I cleared them but even being 65 I did get 2 on a pull... That tells me that the higher level ones may add if you try to pull Phinny single...

Good luck and pre-gratz
RE: ...
# Jan 09 2004 at 11:20 AM Rating: Decent
I have single pulled Phinny a couple of times for friends. All four guards are easily pacified. With the new short duration of Pacify it may be a bit harder to do then it has in the past. I think you should be just fine though. Just float near the sides of the star and pacify each seahorse one at a time, and then pull him with Cease... seems to give me real low aggro radius for addition mobs. Good Luck!

Phinny is a wuss. I kill him with a 65 chanter 60+ mage and myself a 65 wizard. i send the eye of tallon to get the chater the targets of the 4 guards up top she then pacifys them then I quickly get phinny targeted with the eye, get out my flux staff at swim out over the pit while being at the top of the celing. pull phinny with the staff and i allways get him single. mage's pet tanks phinny chanter slows or doesn't don't really matter after a few strikes of sol on phinny he's down. have killed him over 30 times and 0 blue crystal staffs lol. have seen all the other epic pieces drop at least 3 times each.

All I got to say is, went and killed him in the pm, then the am, then the pm, then the am, then missed the pm but did am, pm, am.

Recieved Epic Loots as follows- wizard staff, wizard staff, wizard staff, wizard staff, no epic, no epic, wizard staff.

So I don't know why so many say the wizard staff is so hard to get.

Course I am after mage staff.

Went after Phinny on the Seventh Hammer on the weekend, this is what I learnt from the exp.

Our group did Phinny quite easily, a mixed bunch 53 necro, 55 Warrior, 56 Pally, 62 Enchanter, 65 Druid and 55 Mage (me). Unfortunately he died in the middle and we got wiped when I looted him.

Pull him to the sides and force him towards the outside.

You will also need MR of around 160, with that I resisted Vortex (of the Swirlespine Guardians) and Dispell (of Phinny) at least 12 times. He also appears fairly MR himself, although I landed a malaise, but he didn't resist any of my fire based burns (I was using Char mainly).

He and Undertoe (our other target) appear to be on a timer, and dont have PH's.

I would be very interested to here other peoples views on my comments and of there experiences in KK. It is a very interesting place.

Phinny Tips
# Sep 23 2003 at 3:47 PM Rating: Excellent
Phinny is indeed the last of the "Kedge" race... and being a wizard, he has all of the usual wizzy tricks up his soggy sleeves. The major thing to watch out for when fighting him is being dispelled, which he seems to do almost immediately. This, more than anything else he does can get you killed, unless you are properly prepared...

Do not rely upon EB buffs down here. It is fairly easy to get an EB when WORN item these days, and no one should be bopping about down in Kedge (or any other airless zone or area) without one. Especially if you are going to be fighting caster mobs like Phinny... who will most definitely try to dispell your EB buffs. Leave the fish scales on the fishes and go farm some snake guts in the Grey for an EB amulet. It is one less thing to be worried about and distracted by down here.

There are quite a few posts here regarding the "best" way to pull Phinny, and all are good ideas. Since Phinny can be a long camp, you may just wish to pull the swirlspines all day until he pops... decent exp if you are the appropriate level. Otherwise, to get Phinny away from them (or vice versa) I personally favour the following:

(1) Have a wiz target Phinny by casting Eye of Tallon, and sending it down to where he lurks. The rest of your group can target the wizard who did so, and then hit "assist" to have Phinny targeted.

(2) Using "pacify" type spells on Swirlspine Guardians is unreliable but has been known to work. They are not always up, either. There are various ways to get them out of the way, however. Frankly, I feel that fighting *them* is a lot tougher than dealing with Phinny himself.. they love to cast a "whirl till you hurl" type of nuke and it makes everything rather hectic when they do. One option is to have a monk deliberately aggro the Swirlspines, drag them to the opposite side from where you will be pulling Phinny, and then FD (and stay FD'ed) once they are out of the way. They will slowly swim back, which is when you should pull Phinny.

(3) With him still being targeted, nuke him from above (with a PBAOE which normally would be a no-no in Kedge) to pull him, or you can send down a pet and then pull pet back (or even better, to save time tell the pet to get lost... Phinny will then come after the owner). A Bard can sing an AE sort of deal, etc etc. You can grab him in all sorts of ways, just pull him up to the ledge near the enterance to his big room.

(4) Do not mana sieve this guy; Phinny nukes fairly hard but frankly his melee is worse IMHO. He is not especially difficult without his guardians, so simply take him on face to face and rely on your MR gear to help against his nukes. Also, have casters use fire based nukes on Phinny, as down in Kedge, most other types work poorly or not at all.

(5) He is a short and sweet fight, and be sure to note the time after you kill him. If you are trying to get Epic drops, you may be returning and repeating this battle several times. Hopefully, you will get lucky on your first or second try. Last time I checked, Phinny was on a 12 to 14 hour spawn timer.

Not much more to add that has not already been posted by others. When the fight is done, you can get your monk back by running (well, swimming) over to where he is still FD'ed (the nasty seahorsies will have returned to their "roosts" by now) and just evac or port everyone out.

Many combinations of classes will work fine for single-grouping Phinny. I suppose the easiest time I have had with him was with a Monk, Paladin, Bard, Mage, Wizard (me) and a Shaman. Again, anything relatively well-balanced works, but be sure to have EB when worn gear, and also someone who can target him before the pull and evac or succor you all out afterward... it is a big time saver.

single pull possible, no pacify?

Can phini still be single pulled after the "con" changes for level 65 characters, or will you need someone to pacify?

I play a 65 mage and used to be able to target him with eye and single pull him up. Is this still possible?

Yeah, just found that out myself. Just about every hole you swim through has a door now. Some have 2 doors.

Once you are in Phinny's room with his seahorse love slaves, there are no doors between you and Phinny, so there is no real difference in that pull.

What a wimp mob. Took him today with group of 5 - 55 cleric pacified seahorses, 61 druid pulled him single (no guardians up or at least the didnt agro), a 54 pally, 55 pally, and myself, 55 wiz.

by the way - neither myself or Druid had C lol.

Fight was about 3 min. 2 CH's from cleric, mostly for drowning hehe.

Second time taking down phinny - second time no epic drops at all - not even a robe lol.

I have killed Phinny 11 consecutive spawns and have received the following loot:
2 kedge robes
3 mage staffs
3 bard backbones
4 rogue tridents

and numerous shaman and chanter wands, and ores.

No wizard staff.

A mage in my guild told me wizard staff is a 1 in 40 drop rate... anyone know something about that? Why is this staff so much rarer to get than the other items he drops?

If anyone could offer some insight, I would appreciate it.

Read the wizard epic walkthrough.

In sheer number of actions, the Wizzy has a total of 3 major encounters, the rest is just chasing after details and a few small items. Compare to other epics (Chanters and Clerics come to mind, not to mention the melees and even the Mage epics) where there are many more Major mobs to take out to get pieces for their epic. This is just a guess but I think the low drop rate is to 'balance' what it takes to get the epic.
