This may or may not be obvious but you need to hail him in order to engage him. He will not add on the other mobs around him so feel free to kill them first.

My parse put him at 160,896 HP. Against a level 70sk with 2500AC he managed 175dps on me, max hit was 1279 (total of 6 times) but most were in the low 300's.

He can be duo'd (one toon and a merc) but it would be much easier with some dps along.

173k hp, max hit 1078 on an 85 sk with 5kish ac.

Very easy mob at 85 (no surprise there). He runs at 20%, so if he gets his snare off on you it can be a bit annoying chasing him through the cave system.

Took him solo at 71 with T1 Journeyman healer took a while but finished him off with 0 mana for me and 0 on the healer still wasn't that difficult. For those who care I'm 13khp 2.5k ac and 250 aa's. Anything above that should be really easy to do.

Its been awhile since this has been posted on but would like to add that me and my brother both lvl 75 sk's dropped him tonight with just our mercs. im 15k hps and 2600ac my brother slightly less hps and ac. took maybe 6 minutes. easy kill.

I just Duoed him with 72 SK and 78 Shm, was a long fight. Shm couldnt hardly land anything even with malo line, so kept pets up, and champ/cougar, kept hot on sk entire time and reslowed constantly.

Took maybe 20 minutes and never got close to dying. SK was only 15k buffed with 2k ac. The hard part is once the mob hits around 7% it starts walking away and cant be snared. This is why peeps say wait to use HT. I ended up with about 7 adds on me before it died. It does enrage at 10%.

But needs to be marked duoable, I have no doubts there are som 80 SKs that could solo this if they had the right gear/leechability. My baby sk needed hots quite often.

it was easy with 70 rogue 75 necro 75 mage 80 cleric and 80 ranger and me a 73 sk so if you have enough people it doesn't take a raic force so if you would please change raid enncounter to groupable

75sk,73 mage and his boxed 62 cleric killed him....I(75 sk), easliy cleared room for pull, took about 25 mins but we killed him,....runs at last 5%...so i saved my AA'd leech touch for that....got a few adds...but easily handled....hope this helps.....Varn's to me can be duo'd NP =)

Killed him with 70SK, 70Shaman, 70Druid, 70Cleric all Qvic-Anguish geared, dropped him with everyone at about 85m.

chain Nightmare stasis, don't bother curing
hits from 250-1300, piece of cake when slowed
he runs, unsnarable so be ready for that, buncha easy greenies will agro

I am a fairly hardcore player in a casual guild, and took down captain varnz lvl 70 with 10 65+. Was a long fight but we dropped him, and then cleared his room and the next when he ran. Not too difficult if you ask in PoK for a little bit of help now and then

It is a raid mob for 4-5 casual equipped people, Its a new expansion so mobs hit harder, look at teh gear being dropped in the casual player zones like WoS and Nobles Causeway, If you could walk into any new expnsion as a casual player and just kill teh mobs like this, teh expansion would be useless in a week. You need to gear up in teh casual player zones and then move to harder zones, once your guild gets some new OoW gear that is in teh casual player zones and mobs set for the casual player then the epics will be easily done with 4+ groups of casual players. I am a very casual player and since OoW has come out I am now a Wizard that can buff out over 7200HPs and 6200 mana which is not bad for a casual player. I have a whopping 41 days played on ths toon and still have those stats as a casual player in a casual guild.

If you play a few days a week and a couple hours at a time there is no reason in a few months your guild isnt killing any mob for epic 1.5 Just like 1.0 when they came out it was unimaginable for a casual person to get the epic. now its all one groupable for any epic by casual players. Any epic 1.0 is one groupable, mobs that were previous 2-4 group mobs are now soloable by many casual players.

The difference in casual players and full time hardcore players is they get it first. NToV used to be the hardest zone in game, now casual guilds wont even bother because its drops are so much junk compared to back then, and casual guilds have done it many times. Relax do not expect tojump in and get the epic in a month or two of release unless your dedicated to hardcore gaming. Just relax get geared then watch how easy it is to obtain, in a year or so it will be trivial for casual gamers.

WOOT! I finally dropped him. Took us 2 and a half groups. We wiped the first time with only 1 cleric and druid as healers. Also had minor dps. His AE was wicked. Went back at him with an extra cleric and 2 more dps. Was a long fight but he dropped. Was able to loot my flamberge, he did not spawn a chest.

Unable to range pull. The SK going for the kill has to hail him to get him to agro.

Hi folks,

1. can confirm the max hit of 1300.
2. depending on your AAs max hit is even lower, I tanked him with ~8400HP
3. bring DPS, we did him with 10 peeps in 2 groups
G1: SHD, CLR, DRU, SHM, ENC, MAG
G2: SHD, SHM, BRD, WIZ
we needed ~ 4 mins to bring him down

4. dropped the flamberge and another scrappy item, no box spawned after!

Think the reason why the chest dont spawn after SK looting is because maybe the SK is not at the corret part of the epic. I have read that somewhere before.

This is the first step in the PRE-QUEST!

There are one or two possibilities.
1) There was a failed attempt prior and your group caught it up, with the sk not hailing the quest NPC in zone.
2) Your SK has looted before and destroyed. (SK was flagged as looting the first time and EQ is trying to avoid farming of items.)<Not speculation, is an actual write up>

I really think the chest is a random drop type of thing.

The SK not being at that stage in the 1.5 is a good idea, but it's not the reason. This is the first mob in a trio of mob to kill for the 1.5 if you do not possess the 1.0 epic. So if you've hailed Ritald then you're at this stage of your epic progression.

There was a bug on Varns that wouldn't allow SK's to loot the Flamberge. It is now lootable. Also he has been tweeked again so now he only hits for a max of 1300 at a whack. His DoT doesn't do as much dmg either. We killed him before when he was ubber twinked and hit for like 1900-3k at a whack. Needless to say wiped the first time but the second time we had a couple of bards and he was cake walk. He runs at low health also so I suggest completely clearing the room and having an off tank ready to keep the repops under control.

I don,t have omens so i,m lvl 65 shammy but we just did him with 2 clerics 2 sk,s 1 monk 1 ranger(bot) and one bst was pretty easy fight hits 1300,s now the 500aoe is easy we are moastely time geared (exept me) cleric had more hp then the tank but hey can happen :P

has around 200k hp but seems like 1000k cause ur 50% slowed the aa RC cures it hes partly slowable with new slow

whats the deal with not being allowed to loot the item for epic? im a dark elf sk, lvl 67. I hailed Ritald, said the crap, found a group, went in, pulled, got ate alive. got a bigger group plus a few and got spit out. got i think 4 groups and pwned his dumb arse. lots of hp but damn, he fell. went to loot the piece and said I was not allowed to loot the item. WTF? Gm's said they wouldnt do squat. is it instanced? if you fail you gotta hail Ritaldo again? if its timed, whats the time? do i have to hail before i go to each of the 3 zones for the 3 pieces?

I got the Flamberge with no problem, and I hadn't even hailed Ritald.

That was before Varns got uber-buffed, though, so maybe its a bug. Wouldn't be the first time a GM refused to do squat on the assumption that a bug wasn't really a bug (actually, I've yet to see a GM do anything other than squat!).

I'm sick of this, happens every single patch. This is now a lvl 70 mob with a nasty AE & he's very resistant now. Also hits 1900 max.

They tweak stuff and it screws the people who actually have a life. I have a fulltime job. So I don't have all day to play like alot of the people in this game. I have to work so play time is limited.

IF you didn't get this drop in the week after OOW came out. Be prepared to have to bring alot of help.

The epic 1.5 was supposed to be for the casual guild and player. It's not.

all epic mobs are doable by 6-7 groups of casually equipped 65s (what they were aimed for.)

prathun (SOE dev) has said epic 1.5s are still supposed to require raidforces.

That is where you're wrong. The 1.5 was made for the casual player and guild. The 2.0 was supposed to take major raid force.

No I didn't expect to just walk thru the 1.5 with my exp groups. I expected to maybe need 2 groups max for most mobs and have 1 or 2 raid force mobs.

My gripe is when OOW was released this was a lvl 55 mob. First patch after it was "tweaked" to lvl 70. Was not even put in patch notes about the SK epic. This guy is no longer a casual guild mob. He takes some serious fire power.

I have since tried him with 2 group, got owned at about 42% was the lowest we got him. The AE is alot more then 200 in range.

Um, I hate to break it to you, but raid mobs are typically only taken out with 2 groups if those two groups are significantly better equipped than "casual players".

Raid mobs are typically designed for at least 4 or 5 averagely equipped groups. You are whining (sorry, but you ARE indeed whining) that you can't take him out with 2 groups. I'm guessing that this is because you have become used to taking out raid mobs with small forces; most likely this is because the level of "average" equipment has gone up since those encounters were first designed.
Naggy can now be duoed fairly easily; when he was first put in the game, duoing him would have been inconceivable.

Besides, even if you had taken Varns prior to him getting super-buffed, you still would have required a larger raid force for the 1.5 drop in Plane of Storms; that mob has hit for over 1600 and has been red to a 66 since the first day of OoW.

IMO, Varns was twinked, not to screw SK's, but to prevent farming. He was an easy kill on a 2-4 hour spawn timer, who dropped elemental+ level gear. I would have loved for him to stay the way he was, but even before the tweak I felt he was too good to be true.

Easy way to make him non farmable is for Varn to lose his loot table. If he is an epic fight mob, he can just drop his epic piece and everyone will be happy. Making him virtually unkillable for 2-3 non elemental groups is a little unfair.
Mobs in dulak shouldnt be dropping elemental level gear sheesh. Make the mob appropriate to the quest, targetted audience and the zone and NOT to the level of some piece of non-epic related gear someone has decided he should drop.

It appears SOE nerfed him a little after the first big buff up. He doesn't seem to hit as hard anymore, but is still considerably tougher than when he was first put in.

They also appear to have put in anti-farming code (which may have been there from the beginning). The chest seems to only spawn if a SK loots the Flamberge. I haven't seen it confirmed, but destroying a Flamberge to loot a second one does not seem to spawn a chest; however, I have seen some conflicting reports about this.

prathun, being a developer, would seem to know more about the # of players a quest was aimed for than you would.

I wish that were true... the developers do their best no doubt no flame against them...but they have NO idea of their customer base that is being left behind.
Casual vs ubers shouldnt be an arguement.basically who cares..im happy getting what i get dont care to have that uberlewt #300...its a game to meet with RL and EQ friends.

but none of the epic 1.5's are achieveable from what my experience tells me is a part time/casual player/ guild are.
your millage will vary..based upon your definition of casual.

6-7 groups of velious and bazaar equiped players(typical casual) are not going to have the AA's or gear necessary to take down a mob that hits 1K+ and mitagates slow. much less has AoE's.

dont claim it was for a group of people that cant get it was what he was saying...and i agree whole heartly.

Epic 1.5 was supposed to be for casual players, that was the intention from all pre-release notes on the website. Epic 2.0 is for those that have uber guilds and uber gear that can deal with uber mobs.
I agree it shouldnt be a walk in the park like say the old druid epic...umm gimme a break! The biggest problem I have is asking people to drag thier butts to Dulak to help me kill a lvl 70 mob for MY epic. Asking a group or so is one thing but now I gottta drag a raid force to do something for me.
Went there last night with 2 1/2 groups and never got him below 57%..and these are elem geared people for the most part. I agree this mob is too hard to make it worthwhile..

Yeah, It does kind of suck. One night I invis down to scout and see a blue con mob for my epic. The next night i take a decent group of ep toons down to him and find a red con mob. Started of with snare to pull (resisted of course). Sotw gets dropped on inc, leech course, tap, tap...well, the rest was futile. 8k Sk, Rog, Beast, Monk, Druid, Sham got him to about 97%. Pwned hardcore with no lube.

I am still gonna fux him up. But I am bringing an army next time.

I should read the boards before I log in after patches heh.

Captain Varn now hits for 1900 on a caster with no defensive aa's. On a 66 warrior with all his 65 aa's and defensive going he hit for 1100. My be more magic resistant now as well, he resisted chanter slow after tash, I didn't get a chance to try that a second time. He has only resisted slow one other time in 10 kills or so.

Bring a raid.

P.S. Rangers can avoid AE by standing at far end of room from him. (edit, he does see invis, does not see SOS).

Just fyi, as of the new patch (wed 9-23-04) this guy now cons red to my 66 shammy.
Unsure on how tough fight is now. too bad since we had taken him down last night and had camped there to get the peice for another SK.

We did him with 4 tonight. Warrior, Paladin, Monk, and Rogue. All level 68+ with high end elemental gear. He slowed us all, fight lasted quite some time with uber pally heals. Dropped no loots we laughed, we cried, and then we left.

Just a few things I've noticed. We've killed this mob 4 times now. All 4 times with a SK in group. The first time we got a chest (boots). Second time we got a chest (earring). Third time the sk destroyed his piece and looted the new one and we got no chest. The fourth time someone else looted the piecs and we got no chest. Therefore this leads me to believe that its truly random.

On a side note I was checking to see if I could manage to miss his AE. I have extended range 4, so I backed up as far as I could and was healing from there and yep.. it still hit me, so I guess there's no way of missing that AE.

For those curious, we did it with:
65 druid
64 druid
65 necro
63 necro
62 shaman
62 SK

It really wasn't all that bad a fight. I can say tho we did wipe once when slow didn't land, so I would recommend getting slow in ASAP.

Hope the info is useful to someone. Also, it seems his spawn is right at about 2 hours.

So the first two times were SKs who had never done the event before, or looted the piece? perhaps it adds a character flag, and ONLY when an SK who has not looted the piece ever, loots it, will the chest appear.

That's the conclusion we came to also....if you can't get the flag (either already have it or aren't the right class/level) then you don't get a chest.

O well.....at least we got a friend his epic piece before the Captain discovered anabolic steroids.

We came to the same conclusion as well.

First try - SK loots, chest spawns
Second try - Enchanter loots, no chest
Third try - Same SK as first try loots, no chest
Fourth try - 53 SK alt loots, chest spawns

I'm merely making an assumption that the lowest level that could loot this would be level 50/51, due to required level to start epic 1.0 quest.

If anyone has anything to add to this, please feel free to do so.

I have herd lots about this guy and how to kill him i plan on going me 68 soon to be 70 druid and my buddy a SK whos working on 67 atm. fromt eh below info i beleive we can duo him but what i really need to knwo is where this guy is i herd hes deep at the bottom on teh caves with the fake wall as ent can anyone confirm this or tell me where he really is?? thanks in advance.

you can invis all the way there. i dont think he sees invis. you can also stand in the right corner as you go in the door take a hard right and u can cast buffs and want not in that corner safely w/o agros. do not know if it effects bard song.

go to the caves in Dulak and keep going straight on path dont take any direct turns keep going and u will come to some stares and a wall keep straight across from the stairs click that wall he is behind ther like around 10ish LB to a 65 ranger mobs are around there easy to kill(normal mobs) he is standing in back oposit of the click wall tried him with 65 ranger 62 shamman and 65 paladin and died. This mob Rampages and the AoE in nasty slows casting/movement/attack speed down by, its posted as 50%, and also has a DD on it. just expect cast to be ALOT slower same with attacks ^_^

Not possitive but guild thinks it is either 2 or 4 hour spawn, but like I said, this is not possitive.

Just took him down with my guildies. Me, 2 Beastlords, Ranger, Monk, Shaman, Cleric and Enchanter. We all 65th level and only one of the Beastlords is Elemental.
Just FYI for SK's not in Elemental guilds it is doable.

Did it with about ten:

Most have normal gear. Around EP, little below.

Fight lasts about 2 minutes. Push was pretty horrid, but we were having a blast =) Dropped pretty easy, no deaths.
He either has a seperate AE for about 500DD, or it's part of Stasis... goes off every 30 seconds or so.
Didn't tank, so no word on hits. He does Ramp, however. Not constantly, but often.

However at the moment, I'm staring at Varns, getting people together to take him out. So, more info to come!

He dropped Mud covered Shoulderpads for us tonight. They are exactly as described below. Awsome ubah!! We tried with a grup and got wiped. Had raid in the hole (GoS) and after he dropped about 12 of us ran to luggald caves and killed this guy. Wiped all but 2 and we total fight lasted less than 1 min.
I highly recommend a group of 65-70 and perhaps a couple extra healers. Leave the chanters at home they will just lose exp here :)
If you enter Luggald Caves (to the left of the rocks on wooden wall around corner from entrance from gunthak) just follow the main path alllll the way to the end. Once you come to a very large room look down the steps there is a gigantic door. That is where you will find him. Bring a pally to paci pull the nine mobs in there. Once clear you can try to slow but he resisted almost all spells. Few dot's landed but little effect. He has a hate list and goes in order of those he hares the most!! Have fun! Pretty easy raid for the loot!

I killed him with self (66 SK), 66 rog, 66 cleric, 66 druid and 65 Shammie. No deaths but he has this one effect that delays yours cast time. I could not cure his slow/snare with the shammie, its was a long fight as a result.The 2 light blue mobs on each side of him can be single pulled w/o him agroing you. He could not be snared yet when he got down to around 18% (not 100% if it was 18 but was around there) he goes on his death walk. All the other light blue mobs outside his room agro you if you dont get him before he gets out of his chamber.He also pops you with a 500DD often. They are easy but if your healer has a low mana pool it could be bad. The chest spawned and it dropped a chain class mask with 105 HP's and +15 to atk.

Captain Varns may have had his loot table nerfed....
We killed him last night, and, unlike the first two times we killed him, no chest spawned after we looted the Ancient Flamberge of Hatred :(

His loot table did seem a bit too good to be true.

Just did it this morning, 9/17/2004 and there was no loot other than the quest item. Did it last night at 11pm and there was a chest. So, does look like it was either nerfed or made to be more rare.

Possibly this was done on purpose to award only the first few people doing the quest. Or, maybe there has to be an SK in the group? We didn't have an SK today and didn't get the chest. We did last night and got the chest.

I've done it three times. The chest pops after the SK in the group loots the epic item.

The time it did not work, I'm not sure if anyone looted the item since we had no SK. So, try looting the epic piece to spawn the chest. I bet its anti-farming code, only one chest per SK.

BTW, RC1 will cure all the DoTS. So will Pure Blood.
