Killed him 3-boxing a 66 magician, 65 cleric, and 65 shaman. Child of Wind pet tanked. At the end of the fight mage had 7% mana, cleric 24%, and shaman 100% because he just sat there and did nothing except slow it.
Nobody had any chanter mind buffs, mage has FT6 and cleric FT5. All terrible gear, the robe was an upgrade for the mage.
He does have a lot of hps, I would estimate about twice as much as the normal apes. Partially slowable. He is also a lot smaller than the massive monkey that spawns as his PH.
Also want to add that this is a LONG camp. Took me several days of spending hours at this camp to finally see him spawn.
First time I did this I spent a weekend there with guild. We eventually got five apes (three robes two capes).
Now, months later, I was two-boxing in the POM forest and checked tracking. Mob was up so I ran there invis with my 65 Chanter - no nameds in the way to see invis. I then ran there with my 55 Mage and CoTH a few friends in.
We killed him with 65 Pally, 65 Cleric, 62 Druid, 59 Druid, 65 Enchanter. He has a ton of HP and hits for up to 800. He seemed to hit harder than last time, but was a fun fight.
We killed the closest bunny first, then pacified the big ape and pulled him.
He dropped the robe (for my Mage alt YAY)
Definitely one of the best camps in EQ for time&risk vs. reward.
Did him last night with 65 mage(me), 65 cler, and 65 bard, i had 40m after nuking, cleric had 50m, and bard wasnt hurt since he didnt melee. lot of hp, he hit earth pet with summoners boon focus for max of high 700s. i invised all the way to his room, no named were up to block me, and then CoTHed cler and bard to room. we set up on empty wall near door, pacied the close mob to be sure, then pulled ample ape. went smoothly. lot easier then camping fabled for hours and hours :P plus i already have an ID4 item
We've been doing these on a semi-regular basis to get the robe for all of our INTies. We've got a mid-50s BRD and SHM, and then 65 NEC, MAG, CLR, ENC which is really overkill. The usual tactic is:
MAG invis and run in to the chest room.
If named is up, it will see invis so stop and COH to the top of the stairs and clear the room if named is up.
Keep doing this, with the MAG running to the next named location and either going past if named is not up or stopping to CoH everyone to a safe spot just before the named if it is up. We also like to stop and clear to the craven rascal just to see if we get his rare drop.
Eventually, MAG gets to the large hallway just outside the ample ape room in AiW. Everyone is CoHed to the middle of that hall, which is safe. Clear the mob on the end nearest the ape room and you're ready to pull the ape (or PH).
We use BRD for the pull, and pet-tank the ape. Pets should have full MAG kit, virtue and whatever other STR/DEX/AC or HP buffs you have. MAG epic holds agro even over 65 NEC pet quite nicely so CLR is not wasting mana healing both pets. BRD sings slow until ENC gets it off and everyone else dumps nukes or dots. Short fight and CLR reports pets only need minimal healing.
One thing you don't hear a lot about is that PoM has unusual exp. Normally exp is ok (on par with the other revamps, which is not quite as good as a plane), but named give DOUBLE the experience. Yep, I've confirmed this over and over, if you kill a trash mob that's white to you, you get decent exp, but you'll get twice that killing a white named. Same level, just more exp. So, in that way, PoM seems to be worth about the same exp as PoP if you get a nice cluster of named to camp, and has level ranges from mid-50s (courtyard) all the way up to 65 (AiW).
Spawn time is 30 min, so you can clear a good chunk of AiW while waiting for repop.
The "an assinine ape" spawns in the upsdide down area.

I've killed the ape atleast 10 times, and untill recently had gotten mostly robes with the occasional cloak. The last four times Iv'e killed him now I have gotten nothing but cloak drops. Any one shed some light if this is just bad luck on my friends part who is trying to get the robe? Or has the drop rate been nerfed to rare and the cloak common. Thanks
Killed him twice last night and he dropped the robe both times. So, I don't think it has been nerfed, just the RNG messing with you. Me? I would prefer the cloak to be the common drops. :)
Well, 7/8 times now hes dropped the robe. Got this from him on that odd time:
Cloak of Extermination MAGIC ITEM LORE ITEM NO DROP Slot: BACK AC: 15 STR: +10 STA: +7 WIS: +5 INT: +5 HP: +70 SV MAGIC: +10 Recommended level of 55. Effect: Vengeance II (Worn) WT: 2.5 Size: MEDIUM Class: WAR PAL RNG SHD MNK BRD ROG Race: ALL
I guess we could say its his rare loot, ill just be happy with the robe bein common myself
Me and people from my guild have killed this mob 5 or 6 times now, and everytime the robe has dropped. Summons, max hit 746, partially slowable.
A chanter + healer can duo him very easy (the bunnies (and probably gorillas) up with him are charmable, not the halflings. More than likely, if the chanter slowed him on inc, he/she could solo him.
There is also a shoulders with veng2 i think that drop from him, but till i get them personally, i wont be postin about them
Ok, give it up ! Please post if you've some knowledge/experience pertaining to this mob/drop. Thank you. Oh yeah. I don't care what you think regarding Risk vs. Reward or who should/shouldn't get. That's not relavent. Who are you to say? We want information that matters. Not the funk of your breath funkin' up the boards.
If you can invis, you can head straight to his spawn location without trouble. The mobs in the area he spawns are 64/65. They resist often enough to be a pain if you don't tash/malo. The named mob, An Ample Ape, is certainly doable with one group. I took him down with 4 65s: mage, necro, cleric, and enchanter. We didn't CoD him, though, that is certainly a legitimate strategy. He dropped the Cloak of Extermination referenced above. Since none of us could use it, the necro levanted to the zone in and we CotH'd a 55 warrior in to loot.
