I began tracking the old garg in the entrance to city where most of the other garg spawns are. When I continued to follow track it lead me to a dead end wall. I couldn't find him at all. I went down lower into the city to the other areas where gargs spawn and I couldn't find him. Anyone have this trouble? Anyone know where he might have been? He's still on track now, I just can't for the life of me find him!
We found old gargoyle at /loc -88.62, 74.76, -318.75, on the mapfiend maps it's near MuckCovered Elemental. Hubby Necro was able to nuke the old gargoyle and get summoned right over to him - he had the tome on the first try. Hope this is helpful.
First...Has the updated(standard) gargoyle look. I thought he would have a unique graphic (because he's a named) and thats what is pictured here(as of this posting), but doesn't so that threw me off a bit.
Second...The post that allows you easy access to the rooftops is in the area where it looks like you should be able to jump on the roof because its collapsed but "you just can't quite make it." You will notice a post in the corner and a different roof (red shingles) that you can jump on. This area is also very near the tunnel that brings you down to the lowest part of the zone.
There are actually 13 places in the city where the Gargoyles spawn. The gargoyles also spawn beyond the city on the lower levels and the path to the lower levels. I don't know though, if the Old Gargoyle spawns on the lower levels or the path.
The best way to get to the top of any of the walls is to use a good DD spell and get summoned.
I came down the long ramp to the "inner city" and am outside the gates where you can see several gargoyle's sitting up on top.
On one pull I managed to get 10-15 Guardian's of the city on my tail. Woof! No problem for an 84 necro and his pet but it was exciting.
I couldn't find a way to climb on top of the wall but I finally got summoned up there. Usually the mobs came to me. This was good. Till someone on the ground summoned me there.
My pet has a longer attack range then I do, it works well to use /pet attack <name> and then you don't have to bother targeting anyone. That works well if you don't care who gets attacked or who might add.
edit: wow, came back for day 2 and he had poppped on the end, on the top of the front wall. I pulled him from the ramp
edit #2: I had brought my druid over to track and let me know if he was up. This worked great as I saw he was up (somewhere) and I just logged in my necro and found him rather easily on the wall as I said above. When I came back a few days later to move my druid out of the zone, I noticed the old gargoyle was up again. So I'm not sure he's as rare these days as people say. But pehaps its just the normal EQ randomness.
Good luck everyone!

there are 11 PHers for this mob. 7 are on roofs of ruins (place after you get message saying something moves in the corner of your vision). Other 4 are on top of place before that, where the constructs are.
loc of post u can hop onto then onto a roof that takes you up... up... and onward thru the fog. To the Old if ya lucky.
231.72, 338.48, -327.17
took loc after i hopped onto roof but its close enough
happy hunting necros
Bluenec on Drinal
added info...
found the spot where u can target all or most of the upper mobs 83.15, 488.03, -280.71
You have to do some creative jumping from roof to roof then a dirt hillside. They are hard to see as they sit or fd but click up on the area above ya and you will find em.. You probably cant get there if you cant clear all the lower gargs anyway. i got trained several times because of mixture of undead and reg mobs. I found it best when clearing gargs up on the catwalk to just to engage at close range so they dont path poorly and train. You can stay up on the hillish area above the path to confuse mobs if u need a sec to fd evac or whatever, i shot my pet at them from there a lot still havent spawned old but GL 74 necro with merc no probs. If your much lower be perpared to levant a lot but id think still soloable. Also if u mem both invis vs undead and reg invis it is easy to get back after levant with min of fighting.
Ok these guys spawn in the 2nd area of the Hole.... top of inner gates to village, and throughout the village roofs.... ph is "a destroyed gargoyle".. around level 46... easier to target with a cycle/target npc hotkey...... --on roof of building-- 1st can be pulled from pos17 neg246 west 2nd can be pulled from neg29 neg248 west --heading left passage down a floor to next area-- --4 gargoyles on a wall...1 on ledge way up-- --can see/pull them standing on the ramp-- 3,4,5,6,and 7th(roof) can be pulled from neg208 pos68 --next heading into town-- --one on a roof of Slab, and on roof way up-- 8th can be pulled from pos27 pos20 , ramp by side of Slab 9th can be pulled from pos68 pos110 , near ground drop... --finally-- 10th can be pulled from pos127 pos110 ,under arch 11th can be pulled from pos264 pos110 , back wall
If you clear the building, you can run and jump up onto the wall from the right room... there's a little broken chest (or something) that you can use as a ramp to jump up on the wall.
Spawned him yesterday, after killing the first 4 on the front wall, i got summoned by the next one on top of the wall, very good place to be to kill these buggers.
The gargs summon and hit in the 100- 200 range, and are gray, green, and light blue to a 69 necro. There are about 10 spawn points for them, i could reach all of them from where i was. For some of these guys, i let pet tank them completly as i grabbed another one.
WARNING: there is 1 spawn point, all the way in the back, that has BAD PATHING. Be very careful, as i pulled 7 mobs by accident.
I had a few 'an ancient gargoyle' spawn, those were the only ones that were light blue, and hit for about 350 max
After about an hour and a half killing spawns of gargs, an old gargoyle spawned (name not capitalized)
There are 9 spawn locations for 'a destroyed gargoyle' I have found. I spent 3 days killing everything in zone, then decided to spend last 2 days just killing confirmed ph's. After those 2 days, I used target nearest npc at just the right time and targeted 'a destroyed gargoyle' after having killed all known ph's. I was summoned and attacked by 2 gargoyles, one of which was 'an old gargoyle'.
SO lesson learned: 7 are easily findable; The other 2 are way up high only visible from a certain spot. If you are having trouble spawning 'an old gargoyle', perhaps he has been up the whole time... DOH!
500 kills and not one Old Gargoyle 9-1-07. Plenty of Ancients and Unmasked changlings though. Either its broken or ive got some crappy luck. From what ive read noone has had any trouble here.
If you use a levi-move from the first catwalk near the entrance down to the southwest, this is actually an easy move very close to the entrance to the Hole. There are several gargoyle spawns on rooftops after you clear the 4 on the front wall, so move through the city a bit and keep a sharp eye. I'm guessing I saw at least 5 other spawns in the area besides those front 4.
Edit: Actually you don't need a levi move - at the start of the first catwalk there is actually a path down along the left wall, and invis move works until you get to the constructs.

Ok so i was in the hole to get the bit for my necro . I was not getting the spaun. So for somereason instead of pulling with a dot i rooted instead and got summoned after my first little dot got the aggro up . At first i was thinking this was bad. However it turned out to be great fun and helpful. After i killed the mob that summoned me I saw that i could walk on top of the walls like a path and hit like 10 more spaun points for gargoyals that i could not even see on the ground. So then i just started traveling about from roof top to roof top from the summons of the gargoyals . This solved two problems.
First i was only ever fighting gargoyls cause i would not travel by foot but by gargoyal air, was laughing my butt off.
Second i was killing that many more gargoyals and the spaun came very fast. I think maybe after the first wipe of all those i could find over 10 say 15. The mobs did all the work and died rather easily to me at 75 had a blast. I had never seen the hole from up high like that was very neat and got me drop rather quickly , not to mention some great screen shots , thought i would pass it along.
One more thing, its random where he spauns at if you kill a gargoyle it has a chance of letting the old gargoyale spaun there . I have seen him in lots of different places on the roofs on the tops of walls, so kill all the gargoyles you can see after you get summoned and just have them get you to where you have to go. It reminded me alot of the movie spiderman, just look whre you wanna go, root and away you go , eq web slinging .
If he has the bag in his hand, that doesn't mean he has the book fyi. I just killed it ..had bag in hand ..I got all happy ..checked corpse ..no book ..grr. =\
The bag in his hand you are referring to (and other posts below mention) is not the book, but rather the sacred key. Take note that the ancient also has a bag equipped at times and also drops the sacred key.
Killed him this morning, I knew he would drop something because he was holding a bag in his right hand, only killed him once, but since the tome is the only item he can equip in prim/secondary would assume if you see the bag you should get the tome.
Here's how I did it in 30 minutes, maybe I was lucky.
Go into the Hole and progress through until you get to the area with all the "a destroyed construct." They're the mobs that drop the "A Ball of Elemental Clay."
I suggest killing them on your way through, because they'll drop the Clay and they aggro a lot even if they're green to you. I found 3 clays before I got to the gargoyle area. Look on top of the buildings and you'll see gargoyles perched up there. Kill all of them until you get the old gargoyle to spawn. There's about 10 spawn points. I was lucky enough to have him already spawned with the book on him when I got there.
I found him today not in -200/+20 - but when you get near that loc on the map you will be on a ramp. You will notice undead, golems and gargoyles this is your area, you also get a message in main chat ( Did you see one of those stone statues move out of the corner of your eye) or something like that. they summon which helps -- cuz they pull to the top of the wall. and you can see the gargoyles better from there. I reccommend pet pulling. Today I was lucky book droped on first pop... also on a side note all see invis about 1/2 way to the loc. I'm a level 70 Nec with 400+ aa's and 67 pet.. was no trouble to solo. I hope this helps even if it was only a little.
I decided I would try to get the 2 "A ball of elemental clay" and the Ancient tome of lost lore myself in the hole. It's either very easy or I got very lucky because one my way down to the gargoyle's area, I got 4 balls of clay from the destroyed constructs and after clearing all the destroyed gargoyles i could find near the ruins' walls, amongst the first repops was an old gargoyle which dropped the tome. As a 69 necromancer all mobs were green or lightblue.
got him to pop 2 times fo rme today always in the same spot forgot to get a loc on where i camped. it was the wall befoer ruined city where 4 gargs pop on top and on the ground is 3 ghosts. will edit with loc soon but he popd in same spot 3rd garg from left. BTW if he has a bag in his hand he has book if not he does not have book. fairly ez to solo here as a 61 necro with WTD pet hold pet lay hands rarely had to use any but hold very fun camp
Got this guy to spawn by the ramp leading into the old ruins n200,p20 near the ruined gargoyle spawn. He has dropped the greaves twice, shocker, the Tome drop is posted as common but i think it should be changed to uncommon or rare. Undoubtedly Sony found a new way to bottleneck the Necros in another epic quest ala the manisi herb in Chardok.
To get to the area with the Gargoyles, your essentially gonna go to the south most part of the zone. A general location for this area is neg 200, pos 20. An old gargoyle will pop on the ramparts second spawn from the rightmost (on the outside of the area where the gargs begin). Hope this is enough info for people to repeat without wasting as much time there as I did... Dark Apprentice Sauruman Mithaniel Marr Member Dark Bane
Unslowable, but was only light blue to me at 65, so must be 46-49. Hit a lot harder than the rest of stuff around there, normal stuff hit me for about 120 max, this guy was more like 160-170 max. Summoned of course so I wouldn't recommend soloing if you need to kite him. Dropped the book, we rolled on it (because we always joke about rolling on the "phat lewts") I won it, I guess it'll look nice on my cleric *shrug*
Also dropped the key which goes to the room just down the steps there (can't really describe it but you'd know it when you saw it), not a big deal tho, lock was pickable by bard.
Once you get past the castle with the Elementals, you'll come to a building with several golems (which is where the Old Construct spawns). Continuing on, you'll come to the gate where Stonesoul used to spawn -- this guy spawns directly above the gate.
This guy dropped plate greaves of the golden sun. AC 25 STR +5 DEX +5 STA +4 CHA+6 WIS +3 INT +3 AGI+3 HP +30 SvDisease +3 SvNagic +5 SvPoison +3 recommended level 40 War Clr Pal Shd Brd
