Spawnpoints are anything NOT undead. after 2 hours of clearing beach front, found Tiny in 2 minutes, another tiny in 1 hour then finally the captured after 2 hours. Note: both drops came from the same spawn point...beside shipwreck near dead center of entire beach.

Swarm of Pain quest
# Feb 01 2004 at 2:14 AM Rating: Good
I decide to try this quest as a brand new lvl 42 Ranger, Half Elf, even though it states a minimum level of 45 for some reason. I like to do quests at a time when doing so I get experience for the kills. Anyway I just got my lvl 42 in the Eastern Waist working on the Prayer Shaw quests but was having trouble with the Snow Griffins so I decided to give the “Swarm of Pain” spell quest a try. I figured I’m only 2 levels away so I might as well get started.

Since I was only level 42, and 99% of the MOBs were dark blue, I was not selective about killing just the Nifilik’s and I killed anything I came across. On my 6th Nifilik kill I got the Captured Nifilik. On my 11th Nifilik kill I got the Captured Nifilik and the Tiny Nifilik, Whoo……Hooooo! I was just over 2 yellows into my lvl 42 and had killed 29 MOBs at this point. I ran back and completed the quest and was surprised to get about 2 blue bubbles of experience pushing me to the midway point to my lvl 43.

This is not the best place for Ranger to hunt as the bow was pretty useless but the experience was great. I figured since the experience is so good and the “Outcast Survivors” drop about 5pp every time I will keep hunting here until I get to level 44 and can use the spell then I will go back to EW to work on the Prayer Shaw quests again.

By the time I got my level 43, about 57 Mob’s kill and 11 of them Nifilik’s, I had 3 Captured Nifilik’s and two Tiny Nifilik’s so yes I did the quest twice and got the spell and experience both times they were turned but he would not talk to me the second time. As long as no one in the zone says they need the parts when I do an OOC then I will loot them and turn them in just for the experience. The spell is No Drop so I just destroyed the extra one.

This quest IS in fact kinda fun for the lvl...you can solo the nifliks fairly easily pre-44 and there isnt an outrageous drop rate

It is quite refreshing to see someone who has fun doing quests and hunting... I have been playing since the birth of Kunark and i have met very few people with the outlook, that this poster has...
Not worth it

Measuring the time spent and the usefulness of the spell, I say its a waste of time. There will be other DoT's and they are storebought. This is a waste of time.

This is the best dot a ranger has at the level he recieves it.
You get xp for doing the quest.
You get xp for killing the quest mobs.
They are fairly easy kills at level 44.
Even *if* it took you awhile to get the drops (doubtful) you'd still get decent xp. I think you're a little nuts.

Yeah I know how you feel, I never get my Greater Cloak of Uberosity for turning in 1 Bone Chip. What a rip-off!! They really should give us lazy bums something for nothing. Maybe I'll find someone to play the game for me so I won't have to.............. Geez, have some fun guys. The only things I've seen in the game that "are not worth it" are the overpriced items in the bazaar. I have fun just interacting with the NPC's but then again, I'm a Ranger and the word is that Rangers suck and die, oh well.

Does sony know what a BARB is? Why not even the bark/tentical terror splinter icon? Or even drackned leg tip icon. why would they use one of the roundest looking icons?

also im wondering 32 cleric comming here? Good idea? its looking sweet. I have a 32 pally also (my girls) that would DOMINATE here with ghoulsbane and intrument of nife. (stacks) A little dex buff and its all over.

Ok i just spent 2+ hours camping about 17 spawn points in Gulf of Gunthak. A Broken Skull Nifilik can spawn, as far as i can tell, at any spawn point on the beech that is NOT an undead spawn. The spawns cycle through the broken skull mosquitos, and scorpions, as well as, the outcast guys. The tiny nifilik dropped once in 2 hours, and i have yet to see a capptured nifilik drop. If you are serious about getting this spel, bring an AoE caster and some friends to pull whole beach and wipe it out. Respawn time is very long also. I'm seriously reconsidering even getting this spell. so /rude SoE thanks for all your dedicated work to make EQ players lives suck.

Drop Rate.....

I took my 39Rngr with a 42Clr to the Beachhead to fight for the first time. We added a 42 Warrior[both with group tool], and started slayin.....we did NOT know each other prior to that. Having said that, I pulled about 2-3 of everything I could find so we could try out the new mobs. Cleric liked to DoT undead, so that was our main choice. Nifilik spawned on them at the beach while I was pulling and he dropped the Tiny Nifilik. I think he was our 5th or 6th of those in 90 minutes. We were rotating NoDrops and it was my turn......lucked up.
TOUGH to 48 Ranger
# Mar 13 2003 at 1:02 PM Rating: Default
I was soloing these buggers last night with my 48 Ranger. Even with KEI and full self buffs (AC 886, ATK 908, HP 1469) this light blue mob was pretty much taking me down in pure melee. I was forced to act like a Druid (snare/root/dot/bow kite) in order to survive. Am I doing something wrong, or do I not have the right gear?

# Apr 04 2003 at 2:29 AM Rating: Default
Hmmm, 1469 HP at lvl 48 could be better i think. Got that unbuffed at 43, and not twinked...
RE: TOUGH to 48 Ranger
# Aug 05 2003 at 6:36 AM Rating: Default
You definitely need some more gear; I have a ranger alt has 1800ish hp at 36 self buff only, yet i still have couple slot with low +hp item.
Anyways, i think if a ranger want to solo melee style, u probably need a fungi if u dont want a total twinkage.
#REDACTED, Posted: Apr 22 2003 at 10:29 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) /agree slighly gimp... I have 1408 Hps unbuffed at 44 with hp rings and about 150 other hp bonuses. the statement that the mob made you act like a druid? hello?? Is anyone home???

Stupid post. We are RANGERS, not DRUIDS! He obviously knows we get Druid spells and are related to them. But acting like a Druid is not the preferred way of killing things. It is NOT OUR WAY. Fearkiting is great for Rangers; root/ping/dot is not.

Hm, though it may not do the damage at this time, plinging arrows IS the ranger way (or at least, it will be for all of us when we get enough AA's to spend :) )

Play they way you wish! Going off on how others play is just @$$inine, unless they are being detrimental to you. Rangers may be half Druid but we rarely Kite like them. If we kite, we bow kite or fear kite, which is kinda different than how a Druid does it. There are times where we have to Druid Kite but its taxing and not very efficient, and at 48 feathering mobs just doesn't do the damage that it does at 51+ or better yet 55+.

Guess i just lucked out, killed 2 of these last night. First one only had barbs. Took a while before i saw another, however it dropped BOTH items and barbs to boot.

Just for the record, having now killed dozens of these bugs for the 44 ranger spell, I can tell you that Nifilik barbs is their common drop, dropping almost every time, so not bad to gather up a stack of these and hand off to a monk or rogue twink ;) They don't sell to the merchants for too much, about 6gp each with 75cha. Nifilik bile is about the second most common drop, these selling to merchants better at about 1pp each. The quest items, "a tiny nifilik" and "a captured nifilik" being apparently VERY rare! /grumble

As someone stated a bit below, they think the quest item drops are common...hell no! You got extremely lucky if you got 3 from 3-4 kills (or as hypothesized, sometime on day two of LoY they nerfed the drop rate on them). I have personally killed about 40 BS Nifiliks over the last 3 days and I have seen only two "a captured nifilik" drop and none of the "a tiny nifilik". My guildmate, Hulrar, however was a bit luckier, in that on the second night he got both in about an hour.

These bugs at least do not hit too hard compared to some of the other mobs in the zone, max hit I saw was around 70 or so...most con db but a few are ltb to me as a 44 (then 45) ranger. They have never resisted Snare, Root or Stinging Swarm. They will add, as will almost all of the mobs on the beach, but if you keep your eyes open to the spawn points around you, you will be fine, as its a fairly low agg radius (except drogmors who will add from a larger distance).

Nifiliks seem to spawn most often right along the shoreline, around the first two piles of rocks, but I have seen them at all of the spawn points around the perimeter of the beach area. I have not yet seen any in the middle points of the beach (the ones that seem dominated by undead skellies and troll zombies).
Spawn rate?
# Mar 01 2003 at 11:20 AM Rating: Default
There appears to be only three spawned at any one time. Killed all three (2 lt blue and 1 db to a 44 Ranger) but only got barbs.

Spawn rate seems slow, waited 20 mins and still none showing on tracking.

Level range on these is out - we only fought three or four as they seem to be less common further up the beach where we moved to - but the ones we fought conned yellow to 34.

They seem quite magic resistant often resisting Malise from a 32 shaman three times, and then resisting slow even once Malised.

Lots of Hit Points. The Tiny and Captured Nifiliks are common drops as we got 3 total from 3 or 4 kills.
