Book Text:

Smithed Armor Step XIV.

Different materials can
make for sturdier armor.
Stronger metal based armor
can be made using vanadium
ore. You will need to use
brimstone coal to work
with vanadium as it burns
hotter.

Chain and plate armor
templates are created with
the same trend in the items
needed, but the skill set
is of course totally
different along with the
items needed. Many of the
metals may seem too soft or
too brittle to be useful,
but metal tempering
chemicals can be used to
adjust the nature of the
metal so that it can be

shaped. This can make
brittle material more
malleable, or make soft
metal have the hardness
necessary to protect. So
with the appropriate amount
of ore, heat the metal with
the coal and mix in the
metal tempering chemicals.
While it is still hot shape
it appropriate to either a
chain template pattern or
plate template mold.

For wrist and hand pieces,
you will need one piece of
ore. Boot, helm and arm
pieces will need twice
that, while leg and chest
pieces will need three
times that of wrist and
hand.

I found this on the tinkering book vendor, not the normal smithed armor book vendor, like all the other books. The Tailoring XIV book is there, too.
