I did this quest today.

Notes.

I killed the named bear. Within 10 seconds, the wolves went berserk. The emote was made. The bear defenders popped. My pet was still in the cave. I targeted a bear to send pet and he poofed before pet could get out of the cave.. Less than a minute, and I'd wager, less than 45 seconds. The wolves didn't send any aggressors. The cave was just suddenly run over by wolves, in like 3 minutes or less.

I ran to the grimlings. Killed chieftain. Nothing happned. For about 15 minutes. Wiped out the entire village. Killed chieftain again. Nothing happened.

Killed him AGAIN. This is 3 chieftains later. Wow. Wolves took over the islands. They didn't take over the grimling village. I had ceased to care, at this point.

I go to the islands. Wipe out 10 wolves. Not one drop. 5 more. Not one drop. I wipe out about 35 total. I get 3 substances. Three. That's F************** ridiculous. Because it takes 3 for one try at a skill up. Figure 20 seconds per mob. That's 700 seconds for 3 substances, and for one attempt. 12 minutes, for one attempt.

Then you have to go get wailing substances.

It's not worth it. Take the 16 hours, go farm gems somewhere. Buy a crap ton of Rhenium and just take the failures. That's what I'm going to do. This is ridiculous. It's been YEARS since I've been here to do this and I remember the drop rate. It was like a substance on every 2-3 mobs. Not ever 10 - 15 mobs.

This event has always been horribly bugged, and now on top of that, the drop rate sucks, on a massive scale.

W.T.F.

Best part? I killed 35 wolves and the grimlings attacked and took over the wolf cave. The island reset. Now, after a good 45 minutes of getting it to wolves, you get about 15 minutes to farm, and then you lose the islands to something else. I guess they think people will be AOE'ng, which is cool and everything, but hey, I'm not. It's one necro, one guy, one account, one pet.

..... and this sucks.

Add sonic warwolf and a patrolling sonic wolf in Hollowshade Moor to drop list

Lets make a war!!!
# Jan 19 2007 at 3:45 AM Rating: Decent
ok, this is something i found out, the substances only drop at the islands where the grimlings take over in hollowshade. they drop rate IS FASTER when the entire zone isn't taken by sonic wolfs, so you make it how the wolfs control the island, then distroy the other camp of wolfs, let a different race that over, once that is done then farm all you want, when you are ready to get wailing substacne, let the owls take over, kill the big mommy owl 2 have the zone respawn, kill the grimly chiefton, and the owls will come and take over once you kill the protectors :) have at farming!

Not Common

this is definitly not a common drop. i did 7 clears of 2 camps(during war with sonics in control) before i got one. so 1/100 ish...

did SoE change the drop rate?

How do you run war?
# Nov 13 2006 at 3:15 PM Rating: Default

Plan on spending some time in Tenebrous Mts. if you want this stuff. I would still consider it a common drop, but it does not drop as commonly as the Wailing Substance does. I've spent a lot more time farming this stuff than I did the Wailing Substance from the Owlbears. More to the point, However, is this. The Humming Orb requires a Luclinite Mallet and a Vah Shir Anvil, which is quested in Shar Vahl and requires easy drops in Shadeweavers Thicket to complete. Takes about 3 to 4 hours of play time. After you have these 2 items you can begin making Humming Orbs from the Wailing and Shrieking Substances. (see Humming Orb recipe) These will take you to a trivial of 168. DO NOT SELL THE HUMMING ORBS! The orbs are used to make the Shadowscream Armor. But you will need to turn your Luclinite Mallet into a Humming Luclinite Mallet to make the armor. You do this by giving 3 of the Orbs and your Luclinite Mallet back to Master Barkhem in Shar Vahl. He will then give you a Humming Luclinite Mallet. Go to Shadeweavers and kill lesser shades till you puke. Cause it takes 3 swirling shadows per recipe and a humming orb and a "SECTIONAL BELT MOLD" if you make a belt. The reason I bring this up is because therecipes call for "BANDED" molds. Try and find a "BANDED" mold. The only molds I can find that work are "SECTIONAL MOLDS" of whatever your going to make. Kaleras Darkanvil in PoK in the backroom of the forge house (LOC -440 X +560) is the only NPC I know of that sells these. I'm sure there are others but he definately sells the molds that work. Shadowscream will take you to 200+ at very little cost in Platinum. Be prepared, However, to spend a lot of time. Happy Smithing :)

Shadowscream
# Oct 19 2003 at 8:21 PM Rating: Default
Well...getting to that point. I have hit 188 in smithing and now must switch to Shadowscream armor to get to 200 (and then 250 after I can earn some AAs)... I was wondering if farming Shreiking and Wailing subsatnces would be difficult for a 45th level Chanter? I understand Sonic Wolves have a fairly high magic resistance.

The Trick
# Apr 06 2003 at 7:13 AM Rating: Decent
The trick in Hollowshade is to get either the Owlbears or Wolves in control of the islands. Thats the only place in zone i've seen the substances drop.

Smithing for fun and profit
# Jan 19 2003 at 6:07 PM Rating: Decent
Want a good, easy, and (better yet) CHEAP way to raise smithing skill? Look up the Vah Shir Smithing quest at EQTraders... hardest part is probably finding enough lowbies in Shadeweavers to hunt the lesser shades for their no rent loot.

I've gotten myself to 127 so far, and I'm now up to hunting the dire wolves for this no drop loot... very simple way to get your smithing up there, for those of us who don't have 600k pp and a horse.
Shrieking Substance

I found several of shrieking substances on Sonic Hunters in Hollowshade Moor. They showed up during the sonic wolves phase of the Hollowshade War; I don't know if they are normally found there or not.
RE: Shrieking Substance

I have been hunting the various sonic wolves in Hollowshade, and I don't think they drop shreiking substances unless they've taken over one of the other camps. Or I'm horrenously unlucky, since I've spent a couple of hours killing the woofs around their cave and looking for the substances, with no drops.

Shrieking substance and wailing substance are used by smiths to make shadowscream armor - good chainmail with stats like imbued armor.
What is this for?

I also got a wailing substance off of a owlbear once, think it was Named Yelloweyes, was just wondering if these were for quests?
