how to make
# Feb 10 2003 at 11:05 AM Rating: Decent
i saw that to make them you have to have:
swirling shadows, humming luclinite mallet (no drop), vah shir anvil (no drop), humming orbs (recipe below), (medium) banded armor mold, water flask

do i have to be a vah shir to do the quests to get the anvil and mallet? and if so will i be ok being a barbarian in the city?

Yes to both your questions. You have to do the Vah shir smithing quest to get to tha point of making shadowscream armor. A Barbarian should be indifferent to the Vah Shir as well, so you should be safe enough. Of course your post is from so long ago that you are probably already a 250 skill smith, bu tmaybe this will help others who want to work on this.

You do not have to be a vah shir, only need to do the citizenship quest to have faction.

Raise your skill
# Nov 22 2002 at 2:00 PM Rating: Decent
It's primarily a recipe to help raise your smithing skill.. Yes there are better smithed armors out there but they require alot of hard work to get or expensive components.. This is an armor that requires a little work to be able to make but it will raise your skill so that you can attempt the higher armors later.. and it doesn't require you to be level 60 with a full group to farm the items.. Same goes for those wonderful tailored items, they can be a pain in the butt to get components for (not that the Vah Shir tailoring quest line is any easier.. )
Just made some of this
# Feb 06 2002 at 10:59 PM Rating: Decent
I just made some of this for my rogue. The wearer will show whatever is the standard chainmail graphics for the race and it's a bluish-black in color.

It's a shame this is the best that the blacksmithing skill has to offer, especially in view of what's available for the tailoring skill at the same triviality level.

This is the best, eh? Go to the Equipment Search option here, and type in "Acrylia"
THAT is the best stuff availible for blacksmiths.

Try search heraldic. In fact there's even better than that with POP out, but Subrious Heraldic is incredible
Nice stuff, but not really usefull for the smith who makes i
# Jan 23 2002 at 7:06 AM Rating: Decent
It's real nice newbie armor, but it's not really useful for the smith who makes it, in my opinion.

One of the main ingredients is a humming orb, which is made out of a Wailing Substance, which drops from Grimy Owlbears in Paludal, a Shrieking Substance, which drops off Sonic Wolves in Hollowshade, and metal rings. (and your Luclinite Mallet, and Vah Shir Anvil ofcourse)

Now most of the stuff is easy to get, except the Shrieking Substance, the Sonic Wolves are horribly tough, and have very high magic resist.
You need a full group of low to mid 20's to take one, and solo you need to be atleast lvl 32 to take them.
And you'll probebly have to take them solo, there are not that many ppl in Hollowshade, usually around 7, and most of them are in their mid teens.

At 32 it's easier for the Smith to quest Crafted armor in SK, which has slightly better AC then this.(asuming the smith is a warrior)

But although the smithing skill is high, and the drops are hard to get, it's pretty good stuff for a twink newbie Ranger or Rogue.
Also the prospect of a follow up quest, there has none been found yet but still, makes it worth while to create a full set of this armor.

Newbie armor?

For a warrior or SK, it probably wouldn't stand up against the merits of Crustacean Shell.

But for rangers and rogues who can't wear plate, this armor isn't too bad. It covers a broad spectrum of important stats (STA, AGI, DEX, STR) for chain-class melees and has AC comparable to Ry'Gorr, the defacto standard for sub-planes chain armor. I use a combination of Shadowscream, Ry'Gorr, and a few of the Rng/Rog/Shm armor pieces from the LoY expansion. You can wear this a bit longer than "newbie" levels, is what I'm trying to say.

Just because a grandmaster smith probably has better, doesn't mean there's not a market for these. Plus, the gunmetal blue chain looks spiffy, especially when I'm in dark elf form.

"It's real nice newbie armor"

My but times have really changed. Anyone else remember when it wasn't that rare to see lvl 30s wearing peices of banded?

On eqtraders.com, you could also find informations on how to get humming luclinite mallet and vah shir anvil, as well as other components needed.

I think I need to work a little more on smithing for this armor, only 171 at the moment.

Reported trivial level around 240 or higher (yikes). Does explain what all the swirling shadows drops are for. Looks like it would be best suited for a rogue, with all the str/agi/dex that the full set offers.

maybe suited for a newbie rogue, but there is much better armour that is crafted even by tailors if you want to go that route. :)
good luck finding a tailor witht he skill!!

looks like a great new set of crafted armor! I wonder if its tailoring or smithing or some combination of both, I will have to go to eqtraders to see if they have the recipe there!
