The Veteran Reward Summon Resupply Agent sells them for 20pp, 9gp, 9sp, 9cp.

Just got the pearl to drop off of a Dragorn Laborer. Trained the whole zone and it dropped. A dragorn Fleshflayer was killed also but did not drop the pearl.
Drops from a geonid, a gem collector and a focus gem in crystal caverns.
These are slow sellers in the bazaar at prices from 20 – 150p. 50p is the average price, and there’s no indication that they really sell at anything much higher than that. They seem to sell 10 –20 or so at a time every 6-10 weeks. I’ve never seen anyone offering to buy them in the bazaar. (/barter in the bazaar zone)
Used in the Grandmaster Trophy in the PoR expansion. Now I wish I hadn't sold them.

got one of these that is Magic and identifies as Item Lore Black Pearl. got it out of a chest in LDoN. Unstackable and Non sellable to merchants

I got one last week from an LDoN dungeon as well (Mistmore) but it was both stackable and sellable. Perhaps the one you got is for a new quest?

Just had one drop from a dryad in Jaggedpine. First time I've seen a gem drop in the last half level.

Got several of these while killing grimlings in the Grimling Forest mines.
The Merchant information here is wrong. No merchant regularly stocks and sells black pearls. I visited the two merchants listed above and neither had them. If a merchant sells black pearls it is because some player sold them to him. I know, my level 39 enchanter searched for them yesterday at gem merchants, and never found any. Which is sad because black pearls are next on his jewelcraft trivial list to raise his skill to 196. They are reasonably cheap at 21pp compared to the next jewel - star ruby - which is trivial at 199 skill but cost 68pp each.
I see that based on my post, Allakhazam has removed the Merchants that were listed above, so's don't be confused by my earlier post.
As an interesting aside, I make gold geode/polished quartz/amethyst jewelry to bridge this gap. They trivial in the low 200's (geode is 211) and when you buy a geode at 40pp you can sell the gold ring for 80pp or more, a profit of at least 30pp. This gives ample margin for fails, but you are restricted to what you can find at the bazaar for gems.

These also drop off of the various cockatrice in the Dreadlands.
looted some off spiders in dreadlands, not a really rare drop but not a common drop. sell them for around 20 plat with maxed faction and 125 cha *grin*

Dropped off a Drolvarg Snarler in FV. Not a common drop that's for sure.
I've looted a black pearl off a Griffon before, but today I looted one off a Griffenne. I've killed about dozens of Griffennes before and never got a black pearl until now, so it's not too common.

Got one last night from a Forest Giant Greenwood in Warsliks which I sold for 19pp+ to a Merchant. Not really worth the trip to the Bazaar for the xtra 5pp, but if I were more patient I'd bank it with other stuff and sell the lot in one trip. Also got some Ivory off an Evergreen and a Sarnak in The OT.

I had one drop last night fighting Bloodgill Goblins in LOIO. Pretty rare though ... first one in about six hours of continually fighting BGs
I looted one in Frontier Mountains also off a Giant from the fortress, just dont remember which giant.
