i personally agree with the recommended levels and required levels idea(s) that SoE has implemented into the game...cuz its exactly as zahill stated: how much DID that necro cost you?

i wont lie to anyone and say ive never twinked an alt before, but its when i see a level 30 warrior running around in PoK with a blade of carnage, and full sets of Thurgadin armor, or whatnot asking where the bank is, or a level 65 necro decked out in all elemental gear and asking if he dies in befallen will his corpse pop to the ent after a few minutes.... (both true stories btw)

i have no problem with twinking...but its ppl that ebay their chars and their plat and then brag and show off the gear they have no right to wear or brag about their toon and not even knowing how to kite in PoN or a similar zone that get me...

if you've done the work once b4 thats great, twink away within the limits of the gear you can get with low recom or req levels on them (theres tons of nice stuff you can get to last you till higher levels, so need to complain cuz you cant twink ubah_item_#01 to your level 12 sk or something...)

Twinking
I think most people's thinking about twinking is wrong and comes out of jealousy. Someone had to do the work to get the equipment for the twink character. The work was done... it wasn't a freebie. They weren't given free stuff that you weren't given. They were given stuff that *someone* worked for.

I don't see any problem with twinking an alt or a friend's character. It's a gift. Would you refuse NODROP Uber_Item_37 if a GM gave it to you? Of course not, because a) you really want the item and b) this does not violate game rules. If you wanted your friend to start bowling, wouldn't you let him borrow your spare bowling ball? It's no different with twinking. Personally, I have already leveled 1 character to 65, several others to the 50s, and more below that. I don't want to relive all the horrors and heartaches that I faced when I leveled my first few ill-equipped characters. I want to learn the class with as little death and frustration as possible. I want my friends who start the game to enjoy their time as well.

Buying Plat
I think buying plat is rather dumb, and I wish they would/could do away with it, but if someone wants to waste their Real Life money to get more 1s and 0s set on their digital character, then fine. Personally, I had rather spend time in the game, rather than time in RL (aka money earned) to shorten my time in the game.

PLing
PLing someone who has never played their class before is just stupid. This just makes players that don't know their class and are therefore useless. Maybe there are valid reasons to PL for characters you have already played before (character deletion?), but I'm not a fan. However, if someone wants to buff and heal me or my group, I'm not going to refuse. Twinking does not equal PLing. Even if you have a fungi and a 20/24 weapon to level with (not that I could afford that), you still have to swing and miss for a while before you build up skill enough to hit frequently. You still die when you pull too many mobs ("too many" being relative, however). You still have to learn when to cast AoEs and when not to... at least for your group's sake. None of which you have to learn and deal with when you are being PLed.

Closing Story about Twinking
This is a true story. When I first started playing EQ, PoP was the latest expansion. My second day of playing, a ranger (I think) came up to my level 4 High Elf Mage in GFay. He said: "Here, I don't need this." and he handed me a Froglok Bonecaster's Robe. So, I told him thanks, and didn't think anything else about it. I was so new to the game, I didn't know that it was worth an astronomical amount of money compared to the 2pp that I had in the bank.

So I'm cruising around GFay collecting items for my newbie quest armor. I asked a lot of newbie questions in /ooc, of course, because I was one. So then walking around underneath Kelethin, people saw that dark green robe, and I got inspected a lot. It was obvious that I was quite new to the game, and several times I got called a "twink" in a rather unfriendly manner.

Being a newbie, I didn't realize that I was being twinked with a great item for my level. I didn't realize I had committed such a great social injustice to the rest of my fellow players. Perhaps I am still a newbie, because... I still don't realize that.

X

P.S. Perhaps this really isn't the forum for these types of discussions. ;)

Using old models on my level 30 necro (yes, level 30), this robe has a two-tone beige color. The shoulders and cuffs are leather-brown, while the rest of the robe is light beige. Two brown vertical stripes adorn the front, and the belt is a lighter shade of brown than the shoulders/cuffs, but darker than the rest of the robe. At the tips of the collar are two eyes, and there are Egyptian-looking markings running vertically from the neck to the waist.

This robe looks like something Hugh Heffner would wear around the Playboy mansion if he was a necro.

Stats are nerfed if you wear the robe before your 50th season, unlike Club of the Ocean (which cannot be wielded at all until level 51). At level 30, stats are:

Hey all, this is my first post on this forum. About the Dream Weaver Robe, it has VERY sweet look on a HIE male with a gold look and a thin purple inlay down the center and around the upper arms (like a band around them if you will); it has a DIFFERENT look on females (no purple as mentioned above on it, and DIFFERENT design on the back). It is by no means "common" as stated on the listing, as I camped these for 25+ hours on Erollisi Marr and only saw the ONE I now wear drop. Other items were dropping though; most commonly the shoulders, bracers, and boots. I have nearly a full set of this (although I only equip the webshield, robe, and pantaloons). Regarding the pantaloons, I think they are awesome; granting AC 6, +10 INT, +8 STA, and some other stat I cant recall. Another note, the Dream Weaver Webshield you KNOW you will get because if the Fallen Soldier has this item they equip it and you can see it every time :). I would venture to say that one in every 50 or so Fallen Soldiers drops a piece of gear, although at times it is rarer (at least on EMarr anyhow). There is a Dream Weaver item for EVERY slot on your char except the ring slot and ears. Hope this post is useful.

It looks exactly like the monk Robe of the Whistling Fists.
#REDACTED, Posted: May 27 2002 at 8:57 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Exactly? Well, I just got one of those babies this weekend, and coincidence!!! There was a monk out there in UP wearing a Robe of Whistling Fists. At first, for the ignorant, it looked like mine, but when you have a trained eye, you can ACTUALLY see that the drawings and designs on the robes are TOTALLY DIFFERENT. But the colors are quite the same. Take a closer look.

Sorry Mortiss but you are incorrect, the robe does look EXACTLY like the robe of the whistling fists. I am an enchanter and when in human form this robe looks exactly the same as a human monk wearing the robe of whistling fists. The reason you saw different is probably because you are not the same race as that monk you saw. Every race and sex that can wear robes has a different pattern.

hehe... it's "Recommended"...

In theory, it means it can be equipped, but it's not advised to do so...
Wouldn't it be cool to see something really screwed up to the first person under 50 to put this robe on...

You have permanently lost mana on all your characters (1000)
You have decreased your skill in Channeling(2)
You have increased your skill in Twinking(201)

Oh well... it's Verants way of saying "Stop camping stuff you're not supposed to have"

C'mon people, it's NO DROP for a reason

i know the club of the ice ocean (off lodizal) has always been non-equipable till 51+ too, so verrant is just adding more things with restrictions. it's a good thing...i always hated how every time we did an icewell raid, we'd have 3 groups of level 1-20 people constantly begging to loot the royal frosted velium armor.

they should have made umbral plains "umbral plane". =) that way they could just treat the whole zone as 46+ only and not have to worry about putting the restrictions on the armor pieces.

Wah wah wah first of all most of the whining comes from people that are low level and havent gone thru the painstaking process of getting high level starting out with the same crap they have. They see others around there level with stuff higher level and they are jealous and cry. Well to you I say kiss off. I pay my $10 a month I can do whetever i want within the rules. If I dont feel like getting a twink to level 60 all over again like the way I did with nothing then its within my right to twink him. How about you stop crying and go out and level up and get better stuff. There is nothing wrong with twinking at all if the person knows what they are doing. If you noticed its usually the twink warrior that can take more damage and do more damage allowing your group to get more exp faster. So please stop complaining and get a life. Until you start paying for my account you have no right to tell me I can or cannot twink. In the end it comes down to jealousy. Thats just my opinion.

I agree completely. Whether Verant likes it or not, or even realizes it or not, the ability to pretty much twink at will is part of the reason why EQ is still going strong after close to 3 years.

A lot of people enjoy collecting equipment for alt characters, and many a twink has kept a person playing (and therefore paying their $10 a month) that otherwise would have quit EQ entirely during a period where that person was bored with playing his/her primary character.

I've started more than a few characters and built them up completely from scratch without twinking of any kind. I've leveled up a character to a fairly high level on one server, then switched servers and started fresh upon returning from a long hiatus because I was tired of the politics on the server I was on. I feel that I've paid my dues, and I have no urge whatsoever to start a character fresh without twinking (even just minor twinking) of any kind.

Personally, I don't have too big a problem with putting level restrictions on *some* items, though I sincerely hope that Verant doesn't get too carried away with it. If Verant resorted to putting artificial level restrictions on a high percentage of items, I would quit EQ for good and I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Basically, I feel the same way about level restrictions on items that I do about "Trivial Loot Code". It didn't bother me too much when it was only implemented in a couple of zones (especially ones as poorly located as The Warrens and Stonebrunt Mtns. are), but if they had implemented "TLC" across the board (like they were planning to do with the zones on Luclin), I would have quit. And I imagine that I wouldn't be alone in leaving EQ for good.

I found it most amusing verant actually bothered to poll the players and ask them what they wanted regarding the trivial loot code. And the players said DONT implement it, we DONT want it, which I guess upset whoever had the idea in the first place especially as they had already implemented it in stonebrunt before asking the players what. So VI had done all the work into trivial loot code and were basically told to shove it. Then they release Luclin, come up with a new plan to stop twinking and again didnt ask the players what they wanted and I dont think they will ask this time cos they wont hear what they want to hear. 70%+ of the population want to twink their alts, its a game - let us play it how we want to play it.

1 problem with twinking is though, when i see an uber twink at lvl 40,i become very careful to group with him/her.reason is ,i am a ranger and i have met rangers with waaaaay better stuff then me,but they think they are just warriors with sow.and get their group killed fast when all their skills are needed.
hence i fear the uber twink!

"Recommended level" is Verants way of saying "have to be". You can't put it on till 50. Alot of gear is, and will be, coded by level, to stop parking a twink at a zone and farming.

Actually if it's like the mage summoned stuff with a recommended level, you can wear it it just has the stats reduced so bad it stinks to even wear.

# Dec 19 2001 at 12:50 AM Rating: Default
I like how they are trying to reduce the amount of twinks... On PvP servers its kinda stupid seeing guys running around with fungis at lvl 20... The reason why Sullon Zek is the best pvp server is because if you want to twink you have to pay an additional $10-15 a month for another account... Twinks on pvp servers are those who dont know how to pk against someone who isnt twinked...
RE: Truth be told
# Oct 14 2002 at 2:21 AM Rating: Default
I agree as well. EQ2 is going to have "breakable" items...which means even LESS twinking. (Sigh) How fun is it to go through the SAME lame work with EVERY character? HINT TO VERANT...it sucks.

The person who said twinking is part of the reason that EQ is still around took the words out of my mouth.

'Nuff said?
RE: Truth be told
# Feb 06 2003 at 3:08 PM Rating: Decent
Its not the twinking that is the issue...its the level 45 druid that has had a Shield of Bane warding since he started playing 3 weeks ago, that his friend "helped" him with. Its the UBER items that someone who knows NOTHING about the game is wearing, and the fact that, although they havent the slightest idea where it came from, they know that they have it. YES! It is jealousy, and at the same time it absolute disrespect to announce that you got this great item, that wouldnt have stood a chance to have gotten on your own, just because you "know" someone. For those players that have been in for 3 years, I say twink away, you've earned it. But when I see someone who cons green to me and yet has better items, I am absoutely outraged and disgusted. Those people have no right to have that gear, and thank the VI GODS that they are doing something to stop it. Maybe they should think like blizzard did with D2 and say "YOU CANT USE THIS UNTIL YOU'VE ACTUALLY EARNED IT". Made the game harder AND more fun. Hell while they're at it, lets see a Hardcore server... you lack the skills..you lose everything. Weed out the garbage thats floating around now =)
RE: Truth be told
# Jul 20 2003 at 10:08 PM Rating: Default
Well, while we're at it let's limit their play time, which zones they can hunt in, which classes people can play, where they can hunt, and give them specific times they're able to sell/bank at. If they violate any of the new restrictions they will be taken out back and tortured with a pick axe.

Come on... its a game. You pay the same amount as everyone else, please don't try to dictate to everyone what we can and can't do.

P.S. Hardcore Servers = PvP. Put your money where your mouth is and go switch to those if you hate twinking so much. :)

I have played on Sullon, trash server. It has far less to do with skill than it does with how fast you can /q. Hardcore my butt. 99.999% of the "PvP" there is training, bind camping, griefing, if that has anything do with skill (lvl 65 vs lvl 11....lots of skill needed there) ill eat my socks. You wanna see a fair duel? I have arena'd plenty of VERY better equipped necro's with far more AA than me, and laid them to waste.

Full time PvP does not make those servers hardcore, it makes them pointless for 99% of people that want to see PVE endgame

BTW...did i dictate anything? Nope, i just applauded SoEs decisions in the slowing of game progress. Did i ask for special treatment beacause i pay money? Well i pay taxes and i expect to be allowed to vote, even if my candidate loses...but special treatment i never once implied. Did i petition to have recommended//required//no drop tags inserted into items? NO, that was verant//SOE's idea from the start. All that i said was that im pleased to see that verant put limitations on things that are truly desirable. But in your world, where puchasing plat and ebaying your toons should be a legitimate way to play, everyone should start off with VT keys and be flagged all the way to time !

So how much DID that necro of yours cost you...

alright this is the deal reconmeneded <scuse spelling> means just that they reconmend you dont use it till 50 but can... the thing is the stats are lower starting at about 45 and they continuely get worse <badly> I got a dreamweaver cap that was sweet but at 45 it was -2 to each stat when I got to 49 it was maxed but when I hit 50 it was good to go I can only assume that somepeices dont truly go down for recomends till earlier on but most do

Recommended does not mean that it cannot be equipped. I recently got some gauntlets in Umbral that were recommended 50 and no drop. They were bard/rogue only, and my 49 bard was able to wear them at the time. He is now 51, and the stats have not changed, nor has the Recommended level changed.

Most likely they've come up with a system that goes through the item database and figures out what items are appropriate for what levels. Then it tags them as such.
RE: Recommended?
# Dec 18 2001 at 7:31 PM Rating: Decent
Although im not 100% certain, I have fought in the area before. I pretty sure that the tag means that if you are under lvl50 you cannot equip it. I believe this because the stats are close to planar in a zone that has no level requirement so it makes sense on a balancing issue.
RE: Recommended?
# Apr 15 2002 at 5:33 PM Rating: Decent
You can equipt most of the items that come with a recommended level. It just won't give you the full stats that way. A lower level (say 20)putting on higher level (mebbe 40) armor will get a lower AC, with the AC someone of appropriate level in red, in parenthasis beside the twink's actual AC given. I'm not sure whether bonus stats would take a hit, but last I heard, they stay put.

Not all that sure about weapons and how they react to recommended...such is the chanter way.

You could be lvl one and equip it (very difficult though since its no drop) but trying to get it, before reaching at least this lvl would be almost impossible, for the mobs would be to strong.
