You get the stats only would add nothign to melee, but if you hit ranged attack by mistake it would be chucked it's range and you would be out the item

What you posted is true, except the part about loosing the item. Items in range slot are only thrown when you use the ranged attack hotkey if they have a "Range: #" tag (specifying the distance you can shoot them at) on them.
