I bought this staff for only 100pp in the bazaar and it kicks but. First it hits with DD for 25 then 12HPs per tick. Definately worth getting.
I wouldn't call it common

I've killed the ugly mo fo about 50 times and gotten everything but this and the hammer he drops. So if your looking to camp for this item better bring some extra firewood :D

I am really really confused.... This weapon kicks butt, I have one... but it sells for 1-3k???!?! It does not even seem that rare. I am of the 34'th lvl I would probably camp this guy, hes not even an uber mob from the sounds of it.... I am pretty confused. (my friend gave me one to use) I am just saying I am happy to have one but by the time I can afford 3k for a weapon, I would walk all over this guy.... is he highly camped? I mean this is a sick weapon, but out of luclin a lot of really good stuff drops.... I just dont get why its up to 3k....

btw with mine I hit for huge amounts of damage, like 49dmg as a 34 druid. that with the 25dd and the dot is sick. Sometimes I will.. Snare, root, dot, dot and melee untill THAT dots.

This is the first time ive posted Since almost the beging of the game, but a dot of over 100dmg for a cleric that can be used at lvl 20ish? Granted its a proc but the only class listed that doesnt have a dot spell is a cleric. So for the one that shammy's would most likely be the best for this weapon, I really think not. And at lvl 22 Clerics and Shammys would basically have the same melee skill. VI has made the game to easy for newcomers... This weapon would have been god loot back when i quested the cad of sac. Which btw back in the day i could out melee any shammy within the same level even with them having strength buffs. Lol also any cleric that doesnt at least keep 1hb up needs to look at what you summon at lvl 56. Just imagine... melee till proc (note you dont have to sucessfully hit a mob for a proc to work) root and med... even though not so fast of a way to kill a lvl 20ish mob can make you feel like a druid for a minute with the power of a cleric.

BTW why the hell dont they up the dmg cap for clerics capped mine way back when i was around lvl 42ish lol? Gave us a summoned hammer that is 14dmg 18dly 25 dex some wis and procs upto 150 dmg almost more often then i can actually hit the mob... /shrug guess this is better then uping the cap :)

this makes you about as fast as you would be when you have snare on you. its lasts for 2 minutes and does about 200 damage. be a sham or cleric or something and every once in a while hit something with this if it procs by chance then yay =). shams get the most use out of this since they are the best melee of the priest classes.

As a 33 level Cleric, this is nice when it procs. The extra damage and DOT is great while Im soloing.

# Aug 24 2002 at 10:41 PM Rating: Decent
Got it tonight. Read the info then sent my 48 monk over to HM to check it out. A 60 enchanter was camping it but she let me have the next chief. I think I waited maybe 1 minute after I arrived for the chief to pop. I know - just got lucky. Anyway - my 30 bst has much faster kills now. :)

just got one tonight. i ask my wizzy friend to come up and fetch an elder wolf hide once when drops, by luck... it drops right when she zones from pal. i had already killed chieftan twice previously tonight, first time i got the stick(wooooot). so we go over, kill the spiritists so they wont heal chieftan, then we kill the big grimling. She runs over to loot it... I tell her STOP STOP STOP STOP there are bodyguards!!!
She didnt listen, and she walked up and looted the staff. bodyguards jump her, we kill the bodyguards, she gives me the staff w/out rolling. i am a druid, i need it, and i got her a wolf hide, so its only fair that friends be nice to friends )
This is a great weapon

I was given this weapon by a very kind druid lady named Kinsey, in Rivervale, after hunting ruined pelts so that she could make armor for new characters. My druid was in his 20th season and I’m here to tell you that it changed my character’s life. My main style of combat is fear kiting. I snare an animal, DOT it, fear it and then beat on its butt with my stick. This helps keep my weapon skill up, my attack skill up and when it turns and hits me a couple of times while I’m fearing it again my defense skill goes up. I’m in my 28th season and this method has served me very well.

At the time I only had a slow scimitar with base five damage, which made for rather long and manna draining combats. But with this staff, I’m can now fear kite a dark blue wooly mammoth and usually have a little over three bubbles of manna left.

The only disadvantage is, of course, that I can only hold one item. I plan to acquire good wisdom items to hold in both hands for when I’m in a group. But for soloing, the high damage, often in the low forties, and extra DOT have proven invaluable. I would highly recommend this weapon for anyone interested in wielding a two-handed weapon.
Does this still drop?

Been killing the chief for around a week. I get plenty of of the other items he drops but have yet to see a staff of living sand.

Staff for sale...
# Apr 11 2002 at 12:08 PM Rating: Decent
Got one of these for sale on Zeb, dunno how much it's worth (got a PC at 3k, but would be happy with 1k :). Send Zypheir a tell in game if you're interested, was camping the chieftain during the war since there were no owlbears, got the smudge stick to drop (sold for 3k) then got the staff the next drop, after that was all just runes and no drop quest stuff.

if an effect is listed as random / unlimited it usually means that it is a proc, if its listed as triggered unlimited its a clicky effect.. of course there are some items that are listed incorrectly but if i had to guess id say that this is a proc.

I have had this since level 15 and it just procced for me at level 22.

FYI - It stacks with the Druid DoT line of spells. Well, it stacks with Stinging Swarm and I will soon know if it stacks with Creeping Crud as well. It should but this is EQ and you never know, hehe.

This is an awesome weapon for PVP. I love getting into battle on Sullon Zek and stacking two DoT's on someone. Only problem is keeping my ATK up, hard to do when kiting is second nature to a druid and melee is hard to do.

what am i missing?

I'm not 100% sure about this, since I do have Luclin. Anyway, as I understand it, people that don't have SoL (or RoK or SoV) installed themselves can still use Luclin (or RoK or SoV)spells, they just can't buy them from the vendors there (they not being able to get to the vendors). All the spells and procs, mob procs, etc are stored on the spdat.eff file on your PC. As long as you meet the reqs listed in the file for that spell/proc, you *should* be able to use it regardless of which expansions you have.
RE: what am i missing?
# Feb 08 2002 at 8:27 AM Rating: Decent
yes it will proc, it's not Luclin you have to worry about, it's most probably your level, level 22 ain't that high, let us know what the message is you are getting, then we might be able to figure out the problem :) usually if you're getting your will is not sufficient to command this <weapon> means you're still too low a level for it :(
stealth nerfed?

strange they nerfed this item

same thing he procs on you

Camped him for 2 days and killed him 21 times waitng for range item. Got staff of the living sand, Skull hammer and would you believe it 2 ceremonial smudging sticks in succesive spawns. There was no one in zone to give second 1 to so had to let it rot. BTW mob is resistant to both Fire and cold based spell, but magic spells where never resisted once.

Limited Charges
# Jan 10 2002 at 1:04 PM Rating: Decent
I just traded a groaning mace for this item but when it procs it it says all the charges have been used up. Item descrip doesn't mention set amount of charges.
RE: Limited Charges
# Jan 15 2002 at 11:33 PM Rating: Default
COMPLETE and utter BS on the part of Verant...

Okay, a patch or two ago, they retroactively nerfed the Coterie Mask of the Dead. They changed an item that had unlimited charges of FD and gave it 5 charges. This goes for masks that people already had. Why can't Verant retroactively change this item? Laziness perhaps?
RE: Limited Charges
# Feb 12 2002 at 11:11 AM Rating: Decent
doesn't work that way, they can auto-charge (make an item have limited charges) items, but can't auto-uncharge them. It's definately not laziness on their part since if they could auto change it, it'd probably be five minutes of work, and everyone in the game gets fixed, but when they can't do that, each of their GM's has to spend 5+ minutes swapping out your existing one.
RE: Limited Charges
# Jan 14 2002 at 8:09 AM Rating: Decent
Contact a Guide or GM in game. Initially these staffs had charges, but Verant goofed (go fig). They fixed the future drops a few patches ago. If ya read back on the patch news, you would see that they tell ya to speak to a gm or guide for a replacement if ya have one with charges.
Drop rate
# Jan 02 2002 at 11:25 AM Rating: Decent
It would appear that Veriant has changed the drop rate on this to once every 12 hours, making it a rare drop. The Chieftain is a 20 min spawn. I camped him for 14 hours straight Last Saturday and the staff dropped only once after we had been there for 12 hours.

Good luck getting yourself a staff. :o)

# Sep 20 2002 at 10:38 PM Rating: Decent
All Luclin based loot tables are random/dynamic.

Meaning they have no set drop time cycle. And they can and will drop off any mob of the same type. Example. Killing Guards in Katta, you have just as much of a chance to loot Validus Custodus Armor off the green con guards, as you do the red yellow blue con mobs. It does not matter. As long as they are the same type mobs. I.E. Leggos.

Peeps should stop spreading BS around. It only makes it more difficult for the people who take the time to do research on stuff.

You are correct about items have no set drop time cycle, it is random everytime the mob dies, however this is a special mob, and this staff will not drop of just any grimling. Only him.
