this stuff never happens to me, but finally did. went thru the zone on the way to meet a friend. he was the 2nd owlbear i saw on the way. killed him easy with my 51 earth pet and there was the mask. it's a shame i can't use it (magician). guess i'll sell it in the bazaar.. nice item though.

Just in case you need another one, this mask is not from an owlbear. It's from gorehorn, the rhinobeetle :-)
grotesque alloy mask or horned beattle mask?
# Sep 27 2002 at 10:46 AM Rating: Default
currently im wearing grotesque alloy mask its has 7 svm and +7 dex as the important stats, its got others but thye dont really matter. im a paladin and grotesque puts me over 100 in dex so i proc more often. i was jsut wondering if i should use grotesque or this mask for me. thx in advance for advice. (im on pvp server btw so svm is very important)
RE: grotesque alloy mask or horned beattle mask?
# Jun 07 2003 at 2:53 PM Rating: Decent
In a warrior guide I read a very good system to compare items... I adjusted it a bit to fit to a Paladin...

An item gets 1 point

per 1 AC
per 1 STR
per 5 STA
per 5 WIS
per 6 DEX
per 6 AGI
per 5 Save
per 15 HP
per 15 Mana

By this system, this Mask has a value of roughly 12 points. Not bad for the mob that drops it.

Hope that helps
Hal

Note:
This is not including procs or effects, so you have to do abit thinking how effects get into this. Ultravision for example is very nice for a human, but not that needed for a half elf for example.

All The Info you need on Gorehorn and Dirtchomp

All right, I have this down to a science. I hope this helps.

Both Gorehorn and Dirtchomp can be found in Hollowshade Moor, right near the Shar Vahl entrance. They always spawn on the RIGHT side of the road (facing AWAY from the city) before the water. If you look on the map of the place, this gives you a little triangle area. I saw Gorehorn spawn at +19, +2142, but I do not believe he spawns in the same place all the time, since his placeholders spawn all over this area.

The placeholders for both Gorehorn and Dirtchomp are the AGGRESSIVE (for newbies, that means the monsters that will attack you on sight) rhinobeetles and rockhoppers. What this means is, every time you see an aggressive rhinobeetle, it could have been Gorehorn. Every time you see an aggressive rockhopper, it could have been Dirtchomp. Most of the rhinobeetles and rockhoppers won’t attack you if they are green to you. Some of them, the AGGRESSIVE ONES, will always attack, and these are the placeholders for Gorehorn and Dirtchomp.

The most effective way to camp both of them is to get yourself a SOW, and run around attacking every rhinobeetle and rockhopper you see (don’t bother with track for this part) and then take them to the Vah Shir Training camp, where the guards will kill them all. At this point, check track for Gorehorn and/or Dirtchomp. You should also check tracking while you are training, just don’t use it to find mobs, it is too slow. Just run around and attack every rhinobeetle and rochhopper you see. I usually take no less than 6 at a time to the guards.

THERE IS NO SET SPAWN RATE FOR EITHER ONE OF THESE TWO! It is completely random. How do I know this? I farmed the area for 16 hours (8 hours, 2 days) and I found both of them to spawn in as little as 30 minutes apart, and as long as 3 hours. Both are random, and not related. I have 4 masks for my trouble (I hunt with 2 characters, and I had to make 2 mules in Shar Vahl. I have collected 2 masks in a row, both times, but I still think it is random each time, and I got lucky. It is my belief if you can spare 4 hours, you have a very good shot at getting at least 1 mask.

I am a level 40 Wood Elf Ranger. I hunt with my 53 Cleric (I have multiple accounts, and I use my laptop for the Cleric). At level 40, I have no trouble with Dirtchomp. With Gorehorn, I always need at least 1 heal from the cleric, sometimes more. Dirtchomp cons light blue to me at 40, and Gorehorn cons dark blue to me at 40. I was hunting there last night with a real life friend who is level 15. For him, the rhinobeetles and rockhoppers coned light blue and dark blue.

Dirtchomp drops a decent whip called a Severed Rockhopper Tail, the only trouble is it has an effect of ROCK MITES that effects the USER, not the TARGET. I have petitioned and got a GM who said he did not know if this was correct, and told me to send in a bug report, which I did. Still waiting on the results, will let you all know.

If you have any questions, please send me a tell in game, my character’s name on FENNIN RO is Iomhair (that is a capital i, not an L), and I will be more than happy to help you out.

Who: 43 monk. 830ac 1231 hp. weilding a goranga spiked club and a Cane of the Tranquil....was alone.

Where: I stayed just a ways outside of the city. If facing out from the city I stayed to the right of the road.

When: Seemed he spawned twice for me in about 1.5hours.

How: Killed everything to the right of the road (within viewable distance). There is a hill to the right of the road and down a short walk from city. I deemed that a lookout area (no track = ))

When it spawned: Cumulative average was this...
Battle length: 141seconds
Damage I did to him: 2545hp
Damage I took: 1253hp (used mend, of course. It was close, hehe)
Tried instill, hoping to buy myself some free dmg. Didn't stick twice, and the rest failed all together. (instill at 161 atm)

First time he spawned, I didn't think I was gonna be able to take 'im. And then, to add insult to 1250ish HP injury, he dropped his horn.../sigh. Second time seemed to come around quicker (I'd started killing rockhoppers too, this may or may not have been why). Second time he dropped the mask. WOWIES ) It might not be super neato to many, but it makes me a little teary eyed = ). Love it. Much lighter than the cougar one I had on!

This item is made for Trakanon raids. The charges of Ultravision are perfect for crap buffs, and the resists are just perfect for Trakanon's AE. The AC and stats aren't that bad for any melee class to wear all the time. A very nice toy for the kitty to play with. :)

This husband and wife team took out Gorehorn today! lvl 35 iksar warrior and lvl 34 iksar necro combo just got this mask! A handy SoW potion really saved the day. Warrior cleared the beetles for about 25 minutes, and *pop*!
Gorehorn has a mean hit. It beat the warrior down from 1250 hps to 113 in a matter of minutes and desperate measures were called for. Gorehorn is about 1 bub of health, the warrior has a sliver of life left, so he runs HUGE circles around the necro, all the while Jobobtik is swinging away chasing the bug, and the necro is letting loose well timed nukes and syphoning life away so as not to gain the aggro.
After about 2 minutes of the light nuking and circle game the stupid bug finally eats it and *woot* the mask is there. A sweet graphic atleast and some really nice stats for the level.

This can be done with some planning, some luck, and a SoW potion! (THANKS WHITCH!)

Heh, sorry for being somewhat of an instigator, but I couldnt help but notice you said, "A sweet graphic at least..."
I was wondering which graphic you were reffering to. I didnt think masks had character graphics, but perhaps you were talking about the picture of the mask on the stats box thingy majig. Just a small question that I had ;) Im obviously not expecting a reply... =P But if someone feels like shedding some light on what you meant, I would be thankful. =D

I think the level listed for getting any item is level -with- a full group. I read that somewhere on the site.

Upping MR to cut down on farmers is an interesting idea ... but just leaves it open to melees to farm. Seems to me anyway.

If you sell it to a vendor with one charge left and rebuy it... but it usually costs a lot more than it's worth so don't take it out on me if the vendor wants 800pp for it back.

No only gnome tinkered items that use mana batteries can be recharged. There are a few exceptions. This isnt one of them. The stats are pretty good anyway and a GLS will sort out those nightime problems for us humans so it no biggie if ya use all the charges up.

Just a confirmation that the mask still drops as of March 4th 2002! It is not the common drop which is the Gore Covered Horn (or something like that). Gorehorn is not all that rare, I would guesstimate that if you kill everything in sight of the Shar Val entrance that he will pop on the average of once every half hour or so. A few hours of steady killing will get you this mask with a little bit of luck. One bonus would be high quality hopper hides for you tailoring types.
Doable at 35

I heard about the mask and decided to camp it one slow Saturday night. Being a 35 pally with minimal armor and a mithril 2hander being my best weapon i had my doubts, but I also had my hopes.

After doing some reaseach and filling in alot of blanks I went a'campin'.

W went about killing rhino beetles. They came in what seemed like 3 waves. After the thrid wave which took about 10-15 minutes, Gorehorn spawned. I ended up combating him near the road to shar val across from the merchant camp. He took me down to about 10% health and he had about 75%. I LoH and continued to fight. 2 rockhoppers joined in and proceeded to bug the hell out of me.
I used Healing in between swings, and managed to hang in there a bit more. When I was down to 25% I had gorehorn at 10%. I finished him off with 75hp left.

Here is where it gets bad.
The rock hoppers ended up killing me just as I bent down to loot the mask.
Then I realized that I was bound in South Queynos. So I immediatly camped, and created a Vah shir. After waiting what seemed like an eternity to load, I booted it to Howlshade where gorehorn's corpse was next to my Pally's...then the rock hoppers jumped me. Killing my lvl 1 kitty.

Alas, I won the battle, but lost the war. I plan to level to 39 before I attempt again, just for the extra buffs, HP, and healing spells. That should prolly tip the scales in my favor.

Just for the record, I have about 125 str and sta,and 105 wis. 1200 HP buffed.

but yes, you can kill Gorehorn at 35, the rock hoppers are another story though.
RE: Doable at 35
# Mar 13 2002 at 9:57 AM Rating: Decent
I gotta say that doing this at 35 is almost impossible, Sokhota must be uber twinked or incredibly lucky cause at 39 with buffed up stats as follows

AC 840
HP 1506
ATK 864

STR 174
AGI 89

Weilding a Wurmy and Shield I had to cast 1 Greater Healing and use my LOH and I was at only 3 bubs when he finally went down. So he did nearly 2400 damage to me and I did about 2000 to him. He resisted all roots and stuns too.

Lucky for me I got the mask first go ;-)

You forget that you have Lay hands you know. Double those hit points. I killed this guy at level 36 with self-cast buffs and a total of 1290 and some odd hit points. Weapon used was Blade of Xalgoz. I got lucky, I admit. I got a few roots to stick on him...When I would get to 1.5 bubs of health, I would root him, back up and heal. Repeat ad nausem. Once my mana was out and health was nil, I used Lay Hands. Killed him with 1 red bub of health left.

Well, Im the one who supplied the graphic and heres my story...Was the first day of Luclin's release, I got the game and after all that patch crap, I got on. I went straight to Luclin and was wondering around. I found Hollowshade and no one was in the zone. I was just wandering around checking everything out. Killed a bunch of green grimlings, beetles, etc just to check loot on the stuff. I was 44 monk at the time. After getting nothing usefull off the greenies, I figured Id follow the zone wall till I found a new zone. Bout halfway between Paludal and Grimling Forest, Gore started attacking me. I kept running because I figured it was just another green trying to be tough. A little later I noticed it was a named and turned and attacked it. I killed it fairly easy. Looted and got the mask. Its a very nice mask but I had a Mask of War at the time so I ended up selling it for 1k. Gore conned blue to me at 44.

I spawned Gorehorn 4 times last night. Three Gore Covered Horns and then the mask on fourth try. Two horns rotted on corpse, no takers. I'm 45 Monk, Gorehorn was no problem, about like a Sand Giant. 2,500 hp +/-, but he only hits for 80 maximum. I'm told he's MR, but I wouldn't know. Like Scarabs, he fights to the death and doesn't run - very nice.

The Rhinobeetles spawn in clusters. Kill off the first spawn cycle. In about 15-20 minutes the second cycle will start - kill all those. Gorehorn will then spawn. I've seen him seven times, always south of the path and no further east than 1000. There is a plant in the path at 526, 1306. You don't need to kill beetles beyond this point.

By the way, Dirthchomp is spawned the same way, except kill the rockhoppers

I got one tonight as well after spending about 15 minutes killing everything in sight around Shar Vahl. Gorehorn popped, and he dropped the mask the first time. As for how difficult he is, it depends on your class. My level 44 beastlord was able to kill him no problem, and since I was doing nothing but playing pet cleric, I'd surmise he's probably just as easy for a beastlord as low as 39.

This guy is nasty i'm a 45 iksar/sk with 900 ac, bout 1450 hp's, this guy almost gets me everytime, killed him 3 times now, wingblade the first time mask teh second 2. I don't have to harm touch usually unless he agros me too soon after another nasty fight. The mask doesn't seem to be a rare drop, and i sold my first one for 1.5k, so i was happy, considering it only take maybe 10-30 minutes on average to get him to pop. I just kills rhinobeetles and rockhoppers around the city entrance til i spot him.

I've killed him twice; both times he was light blue to me at 46.

First time, a higher level ranger DSed me, and I got his horn. A nice one-hander piercer for pallys, I thought.

Second time, I saw him spawn in his spot a few hundred feet to the left of the Shar Val entrance, and I thought I was out of his aggro range, but obviously not. Hadn't had time/need to have a symbol up, but I always have Daring, Guard, and Divine Vigor up. My HP was 1611. Didn't have the chance to throw up Divine Purpose, but I took him anyway. Tried four times to root him so I could DW helm heal, but he kept resisting. Eventually had to LoH myself, but I killed him and got the mask, which immediately replaced my cougarskin mask.

Accidentally zoned into Hollow to see the anons on with some melees. Wasn't sure what was there so I came here. SO, from checking on beasts from that zone, I finally find out where this nice mask comes from. For the broke, I'd stick to my antlered mask for now, but if I had the chance to actually hunt for the thing, I would.

Anyhows, I was reading many of the posts about the MR and some of the remarks made me think a bit about the Warrens and what Verant was doing against high level campers. I have no big concern about it but I find that deal about the Warrens just a sad effort. Makes me wonder if Verant would find a better system.

My thought: an experience group in the level range of the creature would have a certain resist table to go by, while any players who are too high will be on another resist table. In essence, the higher you are in levels, the more MR the mob will be to you. It could be for every level higher you are, the resist would be increased by 3 or so. I'm sure there are a number of problems that could arise from this, but I'm just wondering here if this could at least be better than that lvl limit cap that makes your reward go poof if you are too high.

I ninja looted one of these (with permission, guy had one already). While I am sure it will fetch a good price, I am kinda hoping the part about BL's not being able to use is a bug. Monks and shaman can use, so why not Beastlord? Well, I guess I will let it go for 1500 if someone is looking for one on Tholuxe Paells, /t eternash.

Saw this bugger pop up, knew he dropped something nice. First time I attacked, I didn't have ensnare memmed. I opened with roots (resisted), had spikes and chloro going, I ran a bit, got a drifting death on him, a few short lived roots, but he resisted my fire quite easily. Eventually I just kept running and getting drifting death on him. Took him down by letting him eat thorns. (got piercing weapon) Second time I opened with drifting death (stuck), meleed him for a bit to get my J-man walking stick to proc tash, ran and got him snared. After that he went down easy with another drifting death. (got the mask).

Both Times I had less than 1/3 health when done and less than 20 mana,I recommend get a chanter to help get this resistant little basturd.

I took my 45th warrior to round up some HQ hopper hides from the hoppers near the grimling village. This thing aggroed on me (was light blue to me, so 38 is a little high, more like 34 or so) I was at half health since sometimes those pesky grimlings step in and hit for some decent damage. Anyway, I solo'd this thing with half health, which was about 1200 HPS, killed him with about 400 to spare, he hits pretty hard. I immediately replaced my sarnak hide mask with this one.

I have hunting him for about a week. I have killed him at least 10 times now. I am a 34 war and toe-to-toe he gets me down to about 1 1/2 bubbles before he goes down. Me and RL bro have been looting and selling these things for 3000p all day long. They are lore so we have 3 chars apeice in the zone to hold extras:). He seems not to like casters to much thou.... resists most ... which for me is a good thing :)

I waltzed away from Shar Vahl after helping a guildmate twink up a Vah Shir Beastlord and thought I'd search out Gorehorn and get this mask.

First rhino beetle I saw south of Shar Vahl entrance ran straight at me. Strange, why whould a rhino beetle agro me.

Turned out he was Light Blue to me and named Gorehorn... how convenient.

He hits fairly average for a light blue but he hits really fast. I also could not lang a single engulfing darkness on him. But of course all lifetaps, Shroud of Hate, Shadow Vortex stuck. And just for the sake of killing a delicious named, I HT'd him to finish him off.

Dropped my brand new mask.
