25pp :)
# Apr 14 2004 at 10:35 AM Rating: Decent
Bought this in bazaar on Veeshan last week for 25 plat. Was kinda stunned to see it selling that cheap, but I wasn't gonna wait to ask questions.

Even on the blue-est of blue servers, this item is worth considerably more than 25 plat. I only wish I'd found it on Sullon Zek, where the resists would come in soooo very handy :)

5 Steps-Manual

1. Get yourself a Smudging Stick.
2. Find some water!
3. Jump in...
4. Take the Stick of and put it back on (Swimming)
5. Voilá, your staff got a new look!
Test it, it's a funny graphik bug =)
RE: Nice Bug
# Aug 24 2004 at 1:36 AM Rating: Default
Yeah, It's like that for any torch graphic item. The graphic you see as a staff was first used as the artifact given out by Al'Kabor to a random wizard in the Great Divide. The effect on it was Al'Kabor's Expansive Mind which was the same thing as Flowing Thought 10. Now the same graphic is used for the Plane of Time key so it's not all that rare but either way it's a cool graphic. Too bad they don't do more for hand held graphics and less for eyelash rendering on their latest and ugliest models...

RE: Grimling war?
# Mar 10 2003 at 12:33 PM Rating: Decent
Most the information on Hollowshade war is posted under Quests by Zone, Hollowshade Moor, and then Hollowshade War. Basicly though Hollowshade War is broken as the Prince does not always spawn in the outpost like he should when one of the three races takes over all three camps.

People farm the Sonics and Owlbears for shreiking and howling substances as well as pelts. Typically about 30 min after the war is resset someone will come along and cause the Sonics or the Owlbears to take over the Grimling camp (the largest camp) thus destroying the Grimlings, so only a reset will bring them back. Reset only occurs if 1) prince is killed. 2) Server is Reset. 3) Zone is Reset.

Best bet is if it is all one race and no prince spawns, petition a GM to reset the zone about 3+ hours before you need it to allow for time for them to respond and get a GM ( Guides cannot do zone reset) out to do it. I've had to do it more than once just to collect Sonic Wolf Bane components. Also please report the war being stuck as a bug to Verant and maybe they will fix it as it does foul up several quests.

i have killed this sob about 50 times over a month period everytime i walk by that way. The smudge stick dropped twice, the hammer dropped twice and the pestle has dropped like 10 times. Stick is probably the rarest as my friends tell me they havent had luck sitting on the camp. Cleaning out my bank inventory, i sold it in bazaar for 1200.
still dropping
# Sep 07 2002 at 11:47 PM Rating: Default
Got one today, it's still dropping. Was lucky, sent ooc in zone looking for oily rags, Enchanter sent tell that they dropped on chief, she let me loot, then said I could stay for other stuff. Chief popped a few more times, one time this dropped, I told her it was there, and offered to let her loot it, she said no go ahead. Woot. My level 34 bst was killing chief for xp but just cause she let me. That was one of the nicest things someone's done in-game lately. I mean, I killed the mob, but she was clearing the area, I couldn't have done it without her help.

Yes it still drops got one last night.
Must have killed that damn chief 80+ times (over a few months) in the search for this nice range slot resist item.
Tally was 3 staffs of living sand, 1 skull shaped sacrificial hammer, 3 pestles and finally the stick.
my story
# May 24 2002 at 6:06 PM Rating: Good
ok this is what happened to me:
a few weeks ago i had camped the chief with an SK partner (me being a druid) for about 2 hrs. nothing special dropped.
then i went back today and tried the camp. discovering that the shammys and bodyguards didnt attack me (at 42), i tried to take out the chief. the major thing that screwed me up was that HE DOESNT MOVE off his spawn point, no matter what you do to him, so i couldnt kite him away from the shammys that healed all the damage i was doing. i emptied out all my mana and didnt get anywhere. this was partly because the chief has high FR. so i medded up to 50m and took out one of the shammys, then medded back up to full. i used Ro`s Fiery Sundering to debuff the chief's FR, then proceeded to nuke the crap out of him. with the debuff on most of my Firestrikes landed for full or near there. with only one shammy healing him, the chief went down leaving me with 20m.
i went to loot him and almost got killed, because as soon as i kneeled down to loot the corpse the bodyguards and shaman jumped on me. i quickly looted my smudging stick (yes, on the FIRST KILL) and ran like he1l. but the problem was that the grimlings were SoWed and followed me, and hit pretty consistantly even at green/light blue cons. thats where having SoC (spirit of cheetah [30 sec super-sow]) was helpful. since it only takes .5 secs to cast, i was able to escape to Paludal.
well, it certainly took me long enough to make my point, but there you have it =)

Me and my trusty bard sidekick, Wissper, were out messin around in Hollowshade this morning. Another warrior in zone shouted he just got this item off the Cheif, so we of course went to investigate. Anyway not 20 mins later he dropped this for us too. Soooo doesnt seem too uncommon, that or we are just lucky like that.

The hollowshade war is always lots of fun when i get bored or no one else is on. We killed the Prince too after the grimlings won and took over the Shar Vahl outpost, but his corpse poofed as we were checkin out his stuff...was like a 30 second corpse...go figure.

It's rare. I've camped that chief for 2 weeks before I gave up. In the 30+ hours I was there I got 2 bowls (+5 wis, +50 mana, primary slot. not a weapon), lots of rags, dust, ashes and enough runes to pave a path to Shar Vahl. Oh, and some spear about 5 times (junk weapon). Not one smudge stick. This is with me popping this bad boy off every half hour like clockwork as this guy spawns. Yes he dosn't move, but take out his guards before you do him in. I usualy kill off one shammy, then the two bodyguards. Dot the chief as I run in and lay the druid melee smackdown on the last shammy to keep him from healing the chief (hey, druids can melee greens. honest!). So, yeah this and the bowl are rare drops.

I read all the posts on the stick and the Grimling chief - no mention of the wars. My first time on Luclin, I saunter into HM wondering whether I can take the boredom of a long camp to get the stick, even assuming that I can reliably solo the camp. Strange, the Grimling village is entirely populated with owlbears. At this stage I am not even sure what a Grimling is supposed to look like, but I guess they shouldn't be called owlbears. No-one else in the zone knows what is going on (only 2 other players there).

In the end I gave up and went home to the Rathe Mountains to raise the money to buy the blasted thing, which I did for 2200pp.

Then I read the stuff about the wars on the zone strategy page. Bah!

Yep. I was doing the Rallic pack quest and already had the pack. Since the owlbear pelts have been nerfed, I waited a week to come back to the owlbear cave...and NO OWL BEARS!

A whole cave of sonic wolves all the way to the back.
Im wondering if the rallic quest will be wortth more now...I mean I know the owlbears are in Pal caverns but there cant be as many.

Wish the owlbears had won on my server.

Owls haven't been nerfed, its part of the war, in order to get the zone back to normal, one of the 3 tribes must take over all 3 camps. You do this by helping the invaders kill the defenders, basically meaning, kill all defenders before raiders show up, otherwise invaders will get slaughtered. Once invaders come up and see no defenders, that tribe takes over that cave and all named in that area pop with different named and different items. So back to the 3 tribe thing, once a tribe owns all 3 camps, a prince will spawn over by shar vah in the little village thing. You have to kill him in order to restore the zone to its normal way. Basically though everyone wants the new loots from different tribes so I doubt you'll see it normal unless you change it yourself. I'm a level 55 druid and I needed help to kill the defenders at sonic cave or I would have died. So this is no easy task. GL

Thank you! =~)
Finally found someone who mentions the difficulty of killing these defenders solo. I have a 49 rogue and a 52 necro and wondered how difficult it was going to be to take out the defenders.
I must have read 150 posts, from ******** about the stats of items to bragging what they looted... no mention of the actual task of killing these guys.

Should not have a major problem.

As a admitedly well equipped 51 monk (fungi and Sibelsian Berserker cloak) I can tank any three of the wolves at once no problem.

For a KITING class the defenders will be hard, since even though level 30ish, they SUMMON....

I have heard rumors that they can not be feared, I never had Instill Doubt land on them, though my intimidate sadly needs ALOT of work.

But Rogue and/or NEcro pet working to keep on top of aggro, and Necro careful not to burn to high and get summoned to much, should be able to drop them.

Highest hit I have seen on my 51 monk is 81 hit points (while looting).

For the record if soloing, I can drop 3-4 of them (fighting 3 constantly, I.E as one drops the next aggros in), before getting to the two bubble health limit, where I will feign.

Also if you want to make it 'easier' to start the war mode.

I suggest keeping the entrance of cave clear of the normal spawns. then when it goes into war mode you only have 3 or so wolves (2 defenders).

You do NOT need to have the wolves wiped out before the invaders show up, but heavily weakened is a good idea, and work at keeping the remaining ones on you rather than invaders.

But I have often used the invaders to help finish off the last defender

Peace and good luck

Lucky ikky I am today, walked by him and smacked his **** down, got a Ceremonial smudging stick, its a keeper, and we have camped him two days in a row both times for more than 4 hours and only seen a junky hammer drop, many fishoil rags, and way to many runes. This camp is mad insane, and I never seem to find anything when we camp him, but when I am running thru the zone and he is up, I'll smack him down and find something.. ROFL

Didnt know this item was worth so much, but i kinda figured it would go very good on me during a raid, being a monk, and having sucky resists anyway. Might sell it soon, but I dont think....

That post down below is true. I was camping the cheiftan last night and camped him for 3 hours, nada. Right when I was about to call it quits, boom, looted the stick. Then I thought, heck why not, I'll kill him a couple times more. Well, then very next kill, I looted the stick again. (luckily I have two accounts and was able to distribute the sticks between both chars :o) I walked away after that one because I couldn't imagine having another drop and not being able to loot it, being lore and all.

The Trick?
# Jan 27 2002 at 3:11 PM Rating: Good
After a number of hours of camping this guy for the smudging stick, I determined the following:

Killing Chieftan while the rest of his tent was spawned resulted in 'something' dropping about 70% of the time.

Killing Chieftan while the rest of his tent was dead when he SPAWNED = 0%.

So, let everyone in his tent live until he spawns, then kill the little guys, then kill him...Much better drop rate going this route.

In about 2 hours after trying this theory, I had three of the Skull Shaped Sacrificial Hammers, three Staves of Living Sand and one Ceremonial Smudging Stick.

I hope this helps!

RE: The Trick?
# Sep 27 2002 at 10:14 AM Rating: Decent
theres logic behide this trick. i have proof to back it up.

yesterday i was camping the stick, this wasent the first time for me the few weeks before i had been poping in killing for about 2 hours and leaving.

yesterday however i decided im gunna get that damned stick if it kills me. i camped the stick for about 5 hours and nothing, repeat NOTHING droped off the chief. the only stuff that droped was runes, rags, and smudged stone weapons. theres was no sticks, bowls, staves or hammer within my whole 5 hour camping period there. i concluded that my luck was crap until now. you see the day i camped for short periods of time i was lower level and killing the mobs took longer. and often another grim would spawn and starting bashing on me as well. this time that didnt happen at all. i effectively 1v1 all the grims. thats probably why i didnt get anything, because within those 2 hour periods i was being attacked by both the chief AND one of this guards or spirits the chief droped 4 hammers, 2 staves and 2 bowls.

so im going to do this theory tonight and report the results tomarrow, i will then tell you all if this trick works or if its bs.

i myself have faith in this because if you camped chief for 6 hours and got nothing but runes you would also be longing for a reason why.
RE: The Trick?
# Mar 16 2002 at 10:48 AM Rating: Excellent
That's absolutely absurd. Spawns in EQ don't work this way. Whether mobs are around him or not, he has the same chance to drop something. EQ doesn't "sense" that the bodyguards are up and change the loot tables.
Drop rate nerfed big time
# Jan 24 2002 at 4:56 PM Rating: Default
A guildie of mine has been camping the chief for nearly 24 hours total, and has killed him at least 50 times and no stick. Be prepared for a long, boring camp. If you're on a low population server, it should be easy to go kill him, then hit the other named mobs in the zone before he pops again.

well I got the stick on the first try. I am a 43 necro and this was to easy. First make and buff pet. tell it to guard past tents. (if you dont you cant fear or they will track into tents. I always fear kite if possible its less damage to pet and you can med..=P) first, pull spiritist that spawns half in building half out. second, one bodyguard then the other. leave the one spiritist in the hut. med for sec nuke chief. was lom when I was done but looted him and got this awesome item. gonna sell it and do it again..)

P.S. the chief was blue to me and was decent exp.

I got mine too on the first try, hadn't been in zone before, did a little tracking to see what was blue, good old chiefy was saying "kill me, kill me". What I found strange was, I firstly "dot"ed the chief, but none of his guards came and attacked me, until I went up close to him. Didn't think the stick was worth so much, glad I checked here before selling it, am gonna go back and see if I can get another with my alt. Good Hunting...

Ok, this is an easy camp as long as you are patient and dont mind being bored out of your mind.
The chieftan is perma rooted to the spot, even if you charm him and try to get him to move he wont budge.
At lvl 51 i was able to single pull the guards and spiritists, it can probably be done much earlier than that.
Make sure you kill the spiritists as they will heal the chieftan, very annoying.
He is very easy, how easy you ask? I was able to melee him to death as a 51 Bard :P No singing any damage songs, just buffs.
And if you really feel compelled to move him from his little spot he can be pushed around with Knockback spells.

Okay I spent 2 days in Hollowshade camping the chief, and finally got this awesome item.

Here's the strategy I used.

The chieftain is in the house in the far back of the grimling town, guarded by 2 level 30 guards and level 30 healers.

The guards outrun wolf form and sow, even when the grimling spiritists don't sow them, so they can be annoying.
Strategy:
1)Get in back of the chief's house.
You can nuke/root/snare the first spiritist. He is outside the house and spawns actually on the wall, you can see him falling up and down the wall. Kill him this way.
2) go sit under the house for a second. the second grimling spiritist aggros. Kill him.
3) the chief doesn't move for some reason when nuked or snared or anything. Just nuke him away till he dies.
4) invis past the guards and get behind his corpse, when you loot, if you are in the right position, the guards won't aggro.
5) loot and run through the back wall of the hut.

The drop rate on these has definitely been nerfed. In the first few days of Luclin, it seemed to drop about 1 in 10 kills. Now, from personal experience and stories I am hearing, I would guess it is more like 1 in 30. Another aspect that made it easier before is that the spawns were about 12 minutes apart and are now about 20 minutes apart. That's a looooong camp now. I had a little different strategy as a monk but still used the general idea of taking out the outer Spiritist first, then I took out the Bodyguards, then run in tent, FD to lose Chief aggro and take out inner Spiritist. Then finally, take out the Chieftain. The Spiritists will contantly heal the Chief so taking them out first is essential.
Also, I would have to disagree with the running speed. The Spiritists will SoW themselves AND the Bodyguards almost immediately and they will run fast. However, once I cleared the entire tent area, the next group was much easier. Here's why... as soon as the first Spiritist pops I attack before he gets the chance to SoW himself and he is no problem to chase down. All the subsequent fights are a breeze in that they cannot run away very fast. In other words, they aren't born with SoW, it is cast on them unless you stop the Spiritist before he can do it.
I got my first Smudge Stick after 3 hours (while the spawns were still 12 minutes apart) and lost it due to a subsequent zone crash. Obtained the second after another 5 hours (this was after spawn time was changed to 20 minutes). Tried to get one for my druid and 12 hours later I still have nothing... drop rate and spawn rate has definitely changed. I think my druid will just have to do without.

Good Luck!

I have this item... It is a very rare drop but it is kickass... Yes it is the cheiftan in HM that drops it.. the most noteable items that dropped for me were that torch, the 5ac 5 wis 50mana bowl (no drop), the 24/42 4ac 4wis 4 sta 40 mana procs some sand attack, a 5/24 sword.. This is just what dropped for me and a guildie over about 3 hours of camping him... I had the torch from another day so I think it is uber rare.. We also killed the named beetle by the town (yellow to a 30) and he dropped a 6/23 25hp 25mp10sv vold dagger.. and I am glad my necro can use.
