I just realized that I read the stats on the Crystal grinder wrong, so here is the corrected version.
-------------------------------------------------------------
I have seen alot of camparing between the cryptrobber's knife and the crystal grinder.
Unfortunately do many not look at all the numbers when comparing the weapons, so I will do better comparision here.

Crystal Grinder is 9/27 = 0.333333 damage/tick
Cryptrobber's knife is 7/20 = 0.35 damage/tick

Without abilities like backstab the cryptrobber's knife is the better choice.

With backstab the calculation can not really be done with only damage and delay, since the dealt damage is also depending on the backstab skill.
What we can do is calculate a needed increase in backstab damage for one of the weapons to be on par with the other.
The calculation here is based on the assumption that both weapons does a backstab in the same number of attacks percentwise.
This means that over 200 attacks with the Crystal Grinder and 20 backstabs (10%), the Cryptrobber will do 270 attacks and 27 backstabs (10%).

The calculation would look like this:

Grinder: Cryptrobber

(100% + X)_ _ _ _ 100%
---------------- = --------- <=>
_ _ _ 27 _ _ _ _ _ _20

(100% + X)
---------------- = 5% <=>
_ _ _ 27

100% + X = 135% <=>

X = 35%
=======

In other words the Crystal grinder should have a 35% higher damage output in backstab to be on par with the Cryptrobber's knife.

Now doing 120damage with the Cryptrobber's knife in backstabs means that the Crystal grinder should do atleast 162 damage.

There's a HUGE error in your calculations...backstab is not affected by weapon delay in any way. You can backstab every 8 seconds no matter what piercer you're using, provided you don't have any haste effects. So therefore your calculations should look more like this:

Crystal Grinder regular is 9/27 = 3.33 damage/second
Cryptrobber's knife regular is 7/20 = 3.5 damage/second
Crystal Grinder BS is about 41/80 = 5.13 damage/second
Cryptrobber's knife BS is about 32/80 = 4 damage/second

So, total CG = 8.46 dmg/sec
Total CK = 7.5 dmg/sec

I'm assuming backstab will do about 4.5 the damage of your regular attacks, which is pretty accurate for a level 30 with maxed skills.

I'm not sure how you did your calculations to come up with 35%, but if you re-calculate them keeping in mind both weapons will get the same number of backstabs over a period of time, I'm sure you will see that crystal grinder will come out on top.

P.S. PLEASE try using EDIT instead of just making a whole new post. Usually I wouldn't mind, but with a post that large it's a big headache trying to figure out why there are two of them.

Actually the Delay on the weapon does affect the rate at which the backstab skill will refresh. FYI 1 dly = .3 second refresh, i don't know if it caps at 8 seconds cuz I have never used a 27+ dly weapon in my offhand.

I have seen alot of camparing between the cryptrobber's knife and the crystal grinder.
Unfortunately do many not look at all the numbers when comparing the weapons, so I will do better comparision here.

Crystal Grinder is 9/29 = 0.31034483 damage/tick
Cryptrobber's knife is 7/20 = 0.35 damage/tick

Without abilities like backstab the cryptrobber's knife is the better choice.

With backstab the calculation can not really be done with only damage and delay, since the dealt damage is also depending on the backstab skill.
What we can do is calculate a needed increase in backstab damage for one of the weapons to be on par with the other.
The calculation here is based on the assumption that both weapons does a backstab in the same number of attacks percentwise.
This means that over 200 attacks with the Crystal Grinder and 20 backstabs (10%), the Cryptrobber will do 290 attacks and 30 backstabs.

The calculation would look like this:

Grinder: Cryptrobber

(100% + X) 100%
---------- = ------ <=>
29 20

(100% + X)
---------- = 5% <=>
29

100% + X = 145% <=>

X = 45%
=======

In other words the Crystal grinder should have a 45% higher damage output in backstab to be on par with the Cryptrobber's knife.

Now doing 120damage with the Cryptrobber's knife in backstabs means that the Crystal grinder should do atleast 174 damage.

backstabbing

as far as backstabbing this isnt very good, from what ive seen str does help out your backstab quiet a bit, but weapon damage helps more, i went from a 10/25, to a 9/24, with +5 str, and my backstab went down considerabley, the most i could get was 80 i couldnt break 105 like i could with my 10/25, so this weapon prolly wont be that great for backstabs. BUT its got a decent ration on it, but i would prolly go for a slime coated harpoon or something
hmm

The *only* reason your off hand swings 'less' is because of Duel Weild checks.

I was given one of these fine knives as a gift..well, more like a trial. Anyway, I used it until I got backstab, when I traded it for a Crystal Grinder. I'd say it's worth about 500 pp, or around there. Very nice for your offhand. Nice and quick without too much damage loss.

Crystal Grinder is worth a LOT more than this thing, you're a very lucky Rogue.I myself use a slime coated harpoon and grinder
#Anonymous, Posted: May 20 2001 at 12:15 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Then you, my friend, are a moron. And for two, count them, two, reasons. 1) crystal grinder is a junk weapon compared to cryptrobber. i would GLADLY sacrifice 2dmg for 9dly less PLUS 4 dex. 2)if you are using a Slime coated as you main, and the crystal off hand you only get to do a double attack check every other round. I just love people who think the crystal grinder is so great. If i had a crystal grinder i would trade it on the spot for a cryptrobber. id even maybe trade my slime coated harpoon for one because the dly is so low.

if you want to go around calling people morons, at least have the guts to sign your post...be willing to stand up for what you have to say.

and btw, can anyone say Burning Rapier? 7/20 5 Dex 5 Agi...hmm which do i want? being L30+, i use my BR in my offhand all the time. i have a SCH in my main and i switch the BR for a Blackjack and Crystal Fiber... just a feew thoughts!

No way I'd call a grinder in primary hand junk, the backstabs are insane and half the tanks I group with can't even come close to taunting off me. For offhand, you do your thing and I'll keep a decent 1hs or 1hb in my offhand just in case I ever need those skills. As for giving up 2dam, that's a lot of backstab damage to give up and the grinder at least has a couple AC. I figure I backstab for 150ish at level 35 with my 9dam grinder, a 7dam weapon would eat about 30 damage off that, just not worth it for me.

Then again the game has options and different people like different options otherwise all of the characters would look the same, so if you want this I belive I have one rotting in the bank, maybe I'll sell it to you...

And if the tanks cant taunt off you and your getting mauled your not backstabbing anymore so what good is that?

I usually don't have problems evading and letting the warriors pull aggro but when a warrior isn't available and the group has to use to a pally or ranger as the main assist, that's when I find myself getting hit more than I should, even with Evade working. Evade is good but isn't always going to work if we're outdamaging the main assist and they can't taunt the mob off us.

In cases like this, I try and wait a little longer before jumping into the battle and let the main assist pull aggro. If I find myself pulling aggro after each backstab I will lay off a bit. Yeah, it sucks that the tank can't hold aggro but that's how life goes when a good tank can't be found.

Still, all secondary melee are foolish enough to be proud they can out taunt the main tank. Guess they dont realize that they have become mana sponges as far as their cleric is concerned. Remember that when you constantly taunt off the main tank and are screaming for a heal when everyones running to the zone becuase you got the cleric OOM!
