I soloed this mob, I'm a level 70 dru, just tossed on dmg shield and potions and just tanked it, max hit was about 513, fairly easy solo

This is not an Omens upgradeable Aug.

Citrine is the upgradeable Damage Shield aug.

I picked up this aug with my mage. Any clue if he can use it? Maybe increase his ds spell?

this doesnt increase the ds that your spell gives to others. its like FT. it only affects the wearer.

Another thing I hadn't realised before equipping this, is that it only adds to an existing damage shield.

In other words - if you have no DS on you, you won't get a DS of 2 from this. However, if you have (say) Shield of Bracken, it will change the damage from 40 to 42.
