My ranger got the sash on the 4th try and my Druid got it on the 3rd. I talked to one player who was on his 7th attempt, so it does seem to be completely random. For this quest a lot of patience is required both in getting the heads AND in repeating the process. Good luck to all.

I got my sash on the first try with 3 male and 1 female and didn't have a waist item equipped. I found all my heretics in the middle to easter portion of the jungle area. Track is very helpful, and all the heretics were easy for a 40 bard to take down. Found a heretic each time I logged on, but I didn't camp them over hours and hours.

Ok I have the Swiftclaw sash the Hangmans and a FBSS. The Swiftclaw is faster than the Hangmans you notice it straight away as soon as you switch between them even! but just log your hits between the 2 haste belts and you will see that the Swiftclaw is Faster. The FBSS is Faster than the Swiftclaw but not by much so all those who say that the Swiftclaw is only 15% haste are either wrong or the Hangmans is like 12% I will let you lot decide.

The best link I have found for how much haste is on a particular item is found here:

Hope that helps answer a few questions.

Get EQWatcher running, log a few battles and you can clearly see the difference. There are several factors that play into this tho, such as dual wield skill, not to mention where you currently are in you skill curve...5 points behind makes A WORLD of difference....

I'm with you Daniel. Just started doing this quest and am using the same spot your using. Very strategic you can see all around from that point. It's good for watching for those unwanted guests :) I have gotten one head so far less than an hour of camping it since I got there tonight. Thanks for the information and good luck in your quest.

For all of you who got the sash on your first try... don't worry, I'm getting the headbands for you. At lvl 40 my ranger has been camping the zone for over a week with only one little excursion to help a cleric friend with his quenos badge quest series and, of course, to get more arrows.
I've gotten very good at this quest and can generally get one satchel full of heads in 4-6 hrs. They go down easilly at lvl 40 so I can knock off the wandering elder granitebacks and highland tigers while I wait. It's unfortunate that I haven'y gotten it yet but I'm going with the idea that it's all random, so if I don't get it on my 7th try (6 headbands in the bag so far) I'll go for an 8th.
General info on good heretic hunting. I sit around n1200 n800 near a tree that's somewhat removed from the rest with a boulder next to it. I sit a little ways back from it facing west and the pathing for the zone sends "targets of opportunity" right by the tree at decent intervals. The tree is at the bottom of a little depression which makes it easy to check around for possible adds before breaking my camo. Also the levitation/SoW combo is the most reliable method to get to ther heretics in time. I've only lost one in a week this way. Don't bother keeping levitation on, just keep SoW up then cast levitation as soon as you start tracking the heretic invader, re-camo and then take off.
Just because I haven't gotten the sash doesn't make this hunting strategy bogus, it just means I get lots of practice at collecting heads.

and my 2 cp onthe haste percentage issue... I don't care I've put so mush time into this I'll wear the damn thing. Anyone can buy a FBSS... only a tracker can earn a swiftclaw!
Dual pop
# Mar 28 2002 at 3:42 PM Rating: Decent
Last night trying again for sash (7th attempt) and two (2) heretics popped simultaneously. Got 'em both, which made 4 heads, turned em in and FINALLY got sash. Also noted that Rognarog had dual popped earlier. Wonder if it's a bug or just and oddity. Anyway, sure helped me out. :)

FBSS is Flowing Black Silk Sash. It is not a quest item. It drops from a Frenzied Ghoul in Lower Guk. I think he's 42nd level or so.

I wish someone would come up with a absolute way of finding haste percentages. When I first got this item, someone told me it was 19%. Then, when I asked my guild, they said 15%. However, in EC I asked around and nearly everyone (about 6 people) agreed that it was 18%. Last night, someone offered me 4k for this item and said it was a 22% haste... I sold it. I had a FBSS before I sold the Swiftclaw and compared the two. I have no means of doing any speical way of find haste, but as far as I could tell, I was swinging about the same number of times in the same amount of time with either item. Personally, I think people take a few percentages too seriously. If it does have a few less haste then FBSS (which I think it does), the AC and Agi bonus make up for it. Anyhow, if anyone knows absolutely without any doubt what haste it has..
Got it!

Got the sash Friday night! And I got it the first time I turned in the heads. Thanks to all the people who posted info here, it was very useful.

I already had 2 heads when I started playing Friday night. I played for a couple of hours, killing the occasional tiger or graniteback, but never saw a heretic on track. At least one other guy in the zone was hunting them, so I probably lost a few spawns. I was just about to give up for the night when I popped up track one more time, and there it was, 'an invading heretic'. So ran over, killed him and looted the head.

I felt better about quitting now, since I had at least one more head to show for my effort. But another player wanted me to port him to WC before I logged, so I did. Then I gated back to the Kejekan town. On one of the posts here I read that 2 heretics sometimes spawn within a few minutes of each other. So before I camped, I brought up track one more time and headed south. Low and behold, another 'an invading heretic' was up. I killed him, looted the head, combined the bag of 4 and head back to the town.

I turned in the bag, just assuming that I would get a headband. But I got the sash first try! I gave it to my Paladin character and the haste is definitely noticeable.

I would estimate it took me about 6 hours total to get 4 heads. One time, I got to the Heretic just as a Tiger was killing him, so make sure you kill him/her fast after he/she spawns. Good luck.

I just got the sash for 2k on the Torvonnilous (sp?) server, and wanted to know what it's haste was because I could get a fbss (21% haste) for 3k if I shopped around. On the internet I found values ranging from 15-26% haste. So using a weighted axe (150dly) I beat on some stuff. The weighted axe's normal time is 15sec per swing (1 sec per ten delay). I turned my log on and with the belt on, I got a steady 13sec per swing. 2/15sec equals out to 13.3% haste. I only did this for a short time; I'm gonna go mess around with it some more, but I think its haste value is much closer to 15% then 26%.

Different people use different methods for calculating haste. Your calculation is a delay reduction. The Verant (and consequently generally more accepted, if slightly more convoluted, definition) is how many extra swings you get in a given period of time (sometimes expressed as "damage increase").
For the quick and dirty haste percentage you would divide 2 by 13, which is 15.3%. The haste formula

wep delay
--------- = hasted delay
1 + haste

can be changed to

wep delay - hasted delay
------------------------ = haste
      hasted delay

An additional monkey wrench is that Verant's definition of haste appears to include 1% as a base haste, i.e. for the FBSS the above calculation would yield .21 but would show up in an item database as Haste 20.

Knowing the numbers for an FBSS is useful, because it is almost always included in any table of haste items, and therefore you can tell which definition the table maker is using (since most don't specify). BTW, that would be 17% delay reduction, 21% swing increase, Haste 20.

I got my Swiftclaw Sash on the 3rd hand in attempt. My general strategy was to camp in Stonebrunt and pop in for before work and then when I got home. Being on for an hour at a time wasn't as deathly boring as trying to camp it straight through, and I would generally get a head or two in each session. The exact mob you are looking for is "a heretic invader". As a 41 ranger, I tracked a couple heretics that were slightly further from the kitty village than any of the dots on the excellent heretic map. I haven't run my own haste tests on it. Using a very high delay weapon for the test is an excellent idea. To do it properly, you need to calculate the delay based on how long it takes you to make several swings, but in this case I believe the 130 delay per swing you saw is very close to being accurate; the haste item chart I trust pegs this item at Haste 15, and in my limited combat with the belt on that feels about right.
RE: What is the haste %
# Feb 15 2002 at 4:45 PM Rating: Decent
The math conversion for your equation is actually:

weap delay
--------------- = hasted delay
1 + haste

becomes ...

(weap delay)
(----------------) - 1 = haste
(hasted delay)

the parentheses in the second equation denote a single function to be performed before subtracting 1 to retreive the final answer, of course.

Both formulas are equivalent. I turned the 1 into (hasted delay/hasted delay); this left the equation in a form closer to what Nothus used. I encourage everyone to use the form that makes the most sense to them; I like thinking of it as "speed increase divided by new speed" rather than "old speed divided by new speed minus one". But I can see how some folks would choose to think about it the other way.
Sash!
# Feb 09 2002 at 6:27 AM Rating: Default
got it on the second try. 1 days work to get the sash and I even misplaced a head somewhere. Well I had mapped out the spawn time as I was hunting heads and all the way up to the last head it followed the same pattern. between 1hour and 1hour and 40 mins between pops. 1 would pop on the east side of the river a ways south of the kejek city, then within 2 mins one would pop on the west side of the river south of the kejek city. now I say it followed this pattern all the way to the last head. the last heretic took 2 hours and 45 mins to pop (maybe I missed 1??) and no second pop. he did pop on the east side of the river though... oh well I am just happy I got the sash. good luck to the rest of you.

I got this last night. My first try...yes, i got lucky. I turned in 3 male heads and 1 female.

When i first got to the zone, i wanted to hunt the heretics. However, I found EVERYTHING (maybe not the snakes, but gorillas, pandas, tigers, katpeople did) in SB will argo on them. My tracker, a druid, could rarely get to them before something had killed them off. Since we were both in our mid 30's, we hunted for exp in an area where we saw one spawn (by the kobold camp on the river).

After 3 levels of hunting (BTW, great exp for a monk/druid team at 35) we got four heads. The druid turned them in and got the sash.

I don’t know the haste, but it is noticeable and a big improvement over the zero haste belt i had before.

OK.. you have to realize that the pricing data is from ALL servers. On many PvP servers haste items are BIG money makers, even more so than on normal servers.. Plus, the 2k it lists here for this one is about half what a fbss goes for on xegony
Heretic Spawn
# Jan 15 2002 at 2:34 PM Rating: Decent
I may be incorrect, but I believe that in addition to the Heretics having a low spawn rate, they are also attacked by wandering mobs they encounter. Therefore, they don't last very long after spawning. If you don't have tracking and catch one soon after it spawns, you won't have much luck completing this quest. Better find a tracking partner :)

Don't know if it was posted or not already but you have to turn in 2 male and 2 female and you should get the Sash every time, Unless they nerfed it. THat's how it was when it first came out.

RE: Giving Heads
# Feb 03 2002 at 5:22 PM Rating: Decent
It doesn't matter what combination of heads you turn in at all. I've done this quest 3 times. First time I had 3 male and 1 Female, 2nd was 2 of each, and the most recent had 3 female and 1 male. Each time I got the headband. :( I heard there's about a 1 in 5 chance of getting this from people in zone. Only thing I can say is if at first you don't succeed, try it again. Pain in the butt that it is.
RE: Giving Heads
# Jan 21 2002 at 11:40 AM Rating: Excellent
Not to be mean, but let's think about this. When you combine the 4 heads, the item you turn in is always the same. The bag tuns into a satchel of heretic heads, so every time you turn this in, it is always the same. Which heads you use to create this satchel is irrelevent, the reward is given once the satchel is turned in. That is the way i look at it.

Don't be a re-re. The quest is totally random. NO COMBINATION WORKS MORE THAN ANOTHER. The second time I completed the quest I turned in 2 and 2 and received a headband so right away you are wrong. It's random people, get over it. Telling us what combination you use is fine but don't start telling peeps that one works all the time because it doesnt.
RE: Giving Heads

Absolutely correct. i got the sash on my first try, with all male heads.

# Dec 24 2001 at 3:54 PM Rating: Excellent
Some guy asked me to help him track these when I was in SB with my druid. We all know druid track sux so I got my lvl 50 Ranger to help him. Got his heads and he gave me 100pp for helping then went and got himself a headband. He gave up after 1 try. I kept my Ranger there and did the quest 3 times in the next 3 days and got all headbands. I gave it up for about 3 weeks went back and got my sash today. Its Christmas Eve so maybe Verant was feeling generous. They all spawn south of kitty city. I've chased them as far as the east wall and as low as the where the jungle starts. I sat invis'd and kept hitting track, they spawn about once an hour. Sometimes within a half hour of each other also. Never had to wait 2 hours. When I turned them in for the sash I had 3 females and 1 male, I know this doesnt mean anything but what the hell. The only thing I killed while waiting was stupid leopard agros and light blue mobs. Titans give bad kitty faction so I left them alone. I will keep this on my Ranger til I get something better and hand it down to one of my alts. Just my experience guys.

how many at a time?
# Dec 23 2001 at 10:57 PM Rating: Decent
Would I have a better chance at getting the sash if I saved up say 20 heads and went to turn them all in together four at a time or does this present no advantage over just turning them in every time I get four?

Hiya
I will wondering if there is anything u have to kill say the kek tigers or highland tigers ?? What exactly to do u kill to get the heretics to spawn!

Also do there only spawn at certain times , i read one thing where someone said thewy only spawn 3am to 11am game time! Any help would be apprecaite esp from those who have gotten the heretics to spawn thx!
RE: how many at a time?
# Dec 24 2001 at 3:23 PM Rating: Decent
I have seen them spawn at all different times during the game. I have also seen them spawn at many different locations all south of the kej village (check out the link to the map that Arbus posted below, it does not lie). I have killed over forty heretics now and have not found any two in exactly the same spot. I have seen them spawn five minutes apart and I have seen them spawn two hours apart. I haven't noticed that killing anything makes them spawn. In my experience the best way to hunt them is to sit invised south of the village and keep hitting track hour after hour after hour...
