The melee damage from this compensates for the loss in backstab damage.

Guess someone else turned out to be the ****** ;)

Umm...you would have to be RETARDED to put RB in offhand for a 12 damage piercer.

Do it and watch your max Bs plummet.
If anything swap them back and forth between backstabs, anything else means you should be nominated for the "Borderline Retarded Ex-Taco Bell Cashier of the Year" award.

Guess I'm retarded, even though my DPS is higher with RB in offhand. And if that means I'm retarded, what does that make you? Go take your DT ranger boy.

Awsome poker this is. would definately push my Ragebringer to offhand. With the AC bonus I'd probably have over 1200AC. That, with the nice resists should keep me alive long enough to evade off the agro this gem would build.

Oh for you nit-picky people talking about piercing/flame edge blah blah:
stick this thing into the spleen up to the hilt and there are (gasp) two edges in the flesh you can twist any which way. have fun :)

Great weapon, to say the least. 25 AC? Woot! Go Rogues. :) And stop complaining when Verant releases a piercer that Rogues can't use. :P

As to the weapon discussion above, shortswords were NOT designed as slashing weapons, they were designed as *stabbing* weapons that had a greater reach than a dagger (thus being effective in a fight where reach counts). Of course, you *can* slash with a shortsword, but Verant hasn't made items where you can choose which weapon skill you want to use... so they have to choose one or the other. There are quite a few shortswords in the game... and it seems they go either way. And then there are items like the CSS which shouldn't have been called a Shortsword to begin with... rather a Crystalline Fer`Esh... but hey.

And as for Verant being screwed up on what weapons *should* look like, I think we all knew that the moment we saw any "******* sword" class weapon. The thing looks like a wimpy broad sword, but you swing it in two hands...? For crying out loud, they make *longswords* bigger than ******* swords.

So basically, Verant can do whatever they want to do with items and what skills they use... they've already proven that they really don't care about accuracy (which for most people isn't an issue anyway). In a game where monsters can hit you through walls and you can't hit them, I think they have some more issues besides weapon accuracy.

I wish my Warrior could use this.... but, then again I'd have to train up piercing from 0, then.... ah, well, I wish my warrior could use something similar to this but with it being 1hs.

Geesh am I the only warrior in the game that has all his weapon skills maxxed? (ok besides archery, I submit to you that one is impossible to move past 80 for a warrior) It only took me 5 lvls and with taunt I rarely had any problems at all with arrgo on the casters and most groups couldve cared less unless I was the main dmg dealer which is a rare thing for me to do anyway.

Any good player should have all weapon skills maxed above level 40 in my opinion (well close to atleast) Only classes that i could see not maxing skills are casters (cept shammys, cause you guys kick **** in melee still<G>)

You really limit yourslef by not raising all weapon skills. ITs never a smart thing to do.

Sorry I dont have the book to hand but if i remeber the essences of a passage from it

Remember that an edge can thrust and block and that a point can slash

If someone wishes to correct the wording on this feel free (the first book during the fight between Paul and the Freman i think is the part)
the problem IS...
# Jul 13 2001 at 8:34 AM Rating: Decent
of course, any sword is a stabber.

but when it has FLAMED EDGE, who is his right mind would stab with it?

bodies recieve most devastating damage from flamed edges when slashed, slightly above average damage when stabbed

The tip of a sword comes to a fine point. the edge fo a dagger can be used to slash. It goes both ways, let VI cunfuse us all they want.

Where do the people that find this stuff swap war stories? I want to hear about that stuff. Who died, who ran, who held the line, who backstabbed and for how much damage? I want to hear about the one that got away, I want pictures dammit! There should be a requirement that if you post a picture, you have to post the brag sheet to go with it.

To the Rogue wielding this; need a lackey? I am a certified Henchman, Bagman and all around Sidekick...

Rapier,
Sabre,
Foils,
Pugious,

All Swords, all designed for PIERCING.
Little or no Edge, but sharp point, and flexible hafts.

Sabres are both, they have an edge and a stabbing point.

i agree with you for the most part except for the ALL sowrds are made for stabbing. i dont know how much sword play you have done but try to stab with an katana hehe your going to die =-). also it would be better to swing not stab with all large 2 handed swords for faster attacks =-)

You're right...sabres do have a point. Its not designed to be used tho. A sabre is a very unbalanced weapon and is heavier at the tip than the hilt. It is designed to be used from horseback and primarily as a slashing weapon. The weight at the end is to allow it to carry thru the victim with out effort from the wielder.

FYI, foils are just for sport. There was never a weapon called a foil that was used to fight with.

There are many short swords that have been used as primary piercers...the Roman Gladius comes to mind.

Oh well, enough history..)) Just trying to set a few things straight not cause a flame war.

Not trying to be that mentioned flamer (Heaven forbid! Bloody flamers...), but sabres aren't necessarily so unbalanced. Sabres are something of a halfway weapon between the rapier and cutlass, not as heavy and short as the cutlass, not as straight and pointy as the rapier. So, there are some sabres that are lighter, thinner, gentlemen's weapons, not necessarily cavalry sabres. But then sabre is a rather flexible designation. Just trying to defend sabres, love them. Better than any pansie foil!

Stab?
# Jul 11 2001 at 5:54 PM Rating: Default
I don't understand...how can you stab with something called a sword? Don't all stabbing things have to be called daggers?

I DON'T UNDERSTAND!

Excellent offhander for that Ragebringer.

I doubt the agro would be worth it, but the AC on this definitely helps.

Also, on a raid of this size, I would imagine a rogue can most likely stab away with the tanks that would be slugging it out around him/her.

Go rent the movie Gladiator, you'll see plenty of stabbing with short swords :)

why name this a short sword if its a peircing weapon?
RE: sword?
# Nov 15 2001 at 12:13 AM Rating: Decent
whats with all the conflict? Its simple,a short sword is only a few inches longer than a dagger. They both can stab and they both can slash. Daggers are just shorter, witch are ment to stab. short swords are ment for both. A short sword is the middle man. Next up are the broad swords ment for slahing.
RE: sword?
# Oct 28 2001 at 7:38 PM Rating: Default
Actually, short swords do tend to be stabbing weapons. Someone above mentioned the Roman gladius or drussus, which was almost exclusively a stabbing weapon. Though the Roman legion's formations weren't as tight as the Greek phalanx, there really wasn't enough room to swing wildly around with the sword after the pilum were thrown, or the opponent got inside their reach. Anyway, it don't matter that much. VI could call it Aunt Marny's Overcooked Grits, and I'd wield it with those stats, assuming I ever see one.

Because it is a SWORD that you STAB with. Understand?
