Like Father, Like Son -- Lethar and Dyn`leth
Veldyn lived two more years after watching her son mature into an elf-dragon child. she was scarred from the acid Lethar rained on her on the outside and by deceit and pain inside. When she finally passed on, her son grieved for her briefly but that passed for him quickly enough. Dyn`leth found his new form pleasing once he got used to the change. His father told him that he was unique, that he was descended from Veeshan and was one of her brood. Eventually he showed him the Scale of Veeshan and even allowed Dyn'leth to help dig the demented Vergalid from the rocks to force him out of the shrine. Dyn`leth watched his father all the time, always interested in whatever he did.
Lethar was pleased by his son. He was strong enough, considering his small size, and there was the chance that he might transform further and become somethign greater. He exposed Dyn`leth to the scale often, hoping its power would help DYn`leth become stronger and grow to me (be) more dragon than elf. After all, Lethar had used the magic of the scale to create Dyn`leth.
Dyn`leth learned much from his father. He learned about the dragons of the brood of Veeshan. He learned of the Nest. He learned of the power of the scale. He learned far more than his father thought he could. He also learned greed, pride, rage and ambition from his father, eventually rivalling him in all those aspects. It was not long before he knew enough about the scale and the way his father used it to form a plan of his own to gain control of Veeshan's scale and fulfill his own ambitions -- to rule over his father and create his own empire. He fancied himself on the path to being a god among the common creatures around him.
The power of the scale is in the blood of the brood of Veeshan. That blood is in Dyn`leth in part. But it is all that Lethar and the true dragons are. The magic of the scale is bound to Dyn`leth very differently, something he learned over many years of experimenting without his father's knowledge.
Before Vergalid was allowed to flee the shrine, Dyn`leth found every opportunity to get to the scale while Lethar was away and turned it on Vergalid to test it. Dyn`leth was able to force the dragon to obey his commands by drawing the dragon's power into himself through the scale. This very process was the reverse of what Lethar had used on Veldyn to create Dyn`leth. He uchanneled magic from himself through the scale and into Veldyn.
One seemingly arbitrary evening, Lethar found Dyn`leth with the scale. With a cunning smile, Dyn`leth focused the power of the scale on his father. He weakened the great dragon, but could not gain complete control of him. Lethar advanced slowly, painfully, against the force of the scale. Dyn`leth knew that he would die if he could not find a way to stop Lethar. He bluffed. Lethar, for all of his paranoia, was still at his very core the Scale Guardian.
Dyn`leth announced he had found a way to destroy the scale and that he would do so unless Lethar promised to do his bidding. Weakened and believing his son's threat, he agreed. His half-dragon son would be the controller of the scale. This agreement has remained to this day.
Constant contact with the scale has changed Dyn`leth. He, too, has become a guardian of the scale in his own way. For years he has used it to enslave and recruit into his growing empire all manner of creature that wanders the mountains. Though he does not know it, the scale controls him as much as he controls his father.
